Lee to Utah Not Happening; Almond Signs with Magic

“…Alan Hahn reports on his Twitter page that a source says a rumored deal involving David Lee and Carlos Boozer is “not happening” and that the Knicks do not view Lee as a single-season rental.

Lee is expected to sign a one-year contract with the Knicks before training camp opens at the end of this month. The team will then plan to sign Lee to a long-term contract after the 2009-2010 season.

Earlier, Ric Bucher reported that the Jazz is looking to acquire Lee by working out a sign-and-trade deal with the Knicks.

“The Jazz have great interest in Lee and are still looking to move Carlos Boozer,” Bucher said. “There would have to be other pieces involved, but with Boozer’s contract expiring, that would make sense for both sides…”

Also, Chuck Morris has signed with the Magic and will be invited to training camp.

I kinda liked Almond. Ah well. I guess it’s Larry Hughes’ job to lose.

  • DKA

What little I saw of Almond didn’t impress me very much. I didn’t see the ability to create his shot well of the dribble and his defense was not much to write home about. I’m sure some will feel that Donnie missed the boat again.

  • Chris Alvino

I thought Almond would have made the team, but in all honesty, I was not overly impressed with his game either. He can shoot the ball extremely well. Do not get me wrong there. But aside from that, I did not see great fluidity in the rest of his game. Like DKA said above, his defense was nothing special for a player of his athletic ability, and his handle was pretty bad. I would never trust him dribbling on a break. A player like Chris Paul or Ron Artest would pick his pocket 10 times out of 10.

  • jaknicksfan

As far as Almond, no great loss we will have N8 back so almond wouldn’t have played anyways. And for D.Lee I still think he will get traded at the deadline along with JJ and hopefully Curry

  • Chris Alvino

Yeah I am not so sure I buy him definitely staying here long term. Sure his contract will be re-visited next summer if he is still here, but I do not buy that as a guarantee. Much like Sessions, Walsh has proved to me that Lee is not a keep at all costs type of player for this franchise.

  • Mal

    WT
Do we keep anyone I thought ALmond would get a shot at training camp, he wasnt overly impressive in summer league but they raved about his shooting, oh well

  • Shea1012

Chris – Why do you say this? All Donnie is doing is playing his hand against Lee perfectly. There is no reason to pay David any more for any longer than they have to, I don’t think not overpaying him or signing him to a multi-year deal when it is totally unneccessary says that Lee is not a keep at all costs type of player at all. It just says Donnie is being smart.

If you were buying the last pair of Jordan’s in the store, and you had them in your hand at the counter, when they rang you up at $129.99, would you tell the guy, you know what, i would ratehr pay $200?

  • Chris Alvino

At the same time, come next summer, the next guy might decide to come into the store and offer $300 for the same pair of Jordans.

The point is that I can see Lee being dealt during the season. I do not think that Walsh is closing that out of the question. He is not merely keeping him on a one year deal to wait and see what happens next summer. I think if he is here, Walsh will open up contract talks again, but he might be dealt before that to a contending team in need of front court help.

  • jaknicksfan

I agree 100% with you Chris. We drafted Jordan Hill for a reason and as he gets time Donnie will Evaluate him and see what he can do. If he plays well D.Lee will be traded at the deadline. And I really do thinks he’s a goner at the deadline

  • Chris Alvino

And if Lee is dealt at the deadline, you can bet that he will have either Jeffries or Curry attached or a 1st rounder will come back our way.

  • gbaked

he may have had a shot at our training camp…

but instead decided to take a shot at the training camp that has a shot at leading to a ring.

If I am him, I go to Orlando over the Knicks.

  • jfried

I don ‘t mind this move, I echo the above mentioned thoughts that the foundation his game is built on doesn’t appear anything too special (seems like a poor mans hughes having to shoot volume to be successful and doesn’t have great skills off the dribble or moving without the ball), and I like sun over almond just because he’s longer and I’m thinking he might have some (albeit smaller not as good a rebounding) boris diaw for this system if he can continue to develop.

  • Bart

Donnie Walsh is a bonehead to resign this guy, hes not loyal to the team he thinks hes better than he is, can’t play defense on ANY quality 4 or 5 in the NBA, It breaks down for me like this:

Is David Lee better than Wilson Chandler

    NO

Is David Lee better than Danilo Gallinari

    NO

Is David Lee better than AL Harrington

    NO

Is Jordan Hill potentially as good or better than David Lee

    YES

All of these guys can play 4 so I can’t understand this attachment to this guy, if we HAD the money I wouldn’t want to give it to him hes not worth what hes asking for and we need to dump contracts, there is NO benefit to bringing this guy back. ZERO.

  • KBT1615

I dont want to believe this. for two reasons Hahn says the Knicks aren’t interested while Bucher says they are….
Im going with the more exciting one until more sources prove me wrong.
Plus Hahn never said the Jazz aren’t interested in Lee snd DW is no idiot if the Jazz don’t want Boozer and want Lee he is trying to figure a way out to get the Team USA Gold Medalist.

  • HaS

I liked his potential, he can shoot and he’s a prototypical off guard height and size. With a 6’10 wingspan he could with a little effort and the right coaching he could be a good defender (He probably didn’t show a hunger to get after it on that end which could be the reason Sloan gave up on a 1st rounder so soon in his career). Obviously he need to work on his handle and his ability to create his own shot, (Kinda sounds like the same boat Wilson Chandler is in huh?) but I thought he fell into the low risk/potentially high reward category. In Orlando I guess he’ll just camp outside and wait for the kick out from D. Howard (not a bad plan for him, if he shows a consistent “J” he may stick and get some decent time off the bench).

Does anyone think that a backcourt of Curry and Boozer would work in the first place? IMO Lee and Curry would complement each other better than Curry and Boozer…. Curry and Boozer are too similar. Keep D Lee!

  • Bart

That would be a awesome backcourt Boozer would lead the league in assist.

  • KBT1615

Boozer is a stronger D Lee with more of a jump shot, and post moves.
Boozer and Curry is actually better than Lee and Curry.
Don’t bring up Zach and Curry for an example.

  • Jack D

    lol…you know what he meant……

  • Jack D

    (responding to Bart)

  • Chris Alvino

Boozer generally does what is necessary to win games. Also, the problem is more on Curry’s side than it would be on Boozer’s side. I happened to like Randolph. The whole “black hole” thing was a bit overblown in my opinion, especially in the few games he played under Mike D’Antoni. I have always said that Zach was traded because of his contract, not because of his game. When the Curry and Zach experiment failed, it was more because Curry could not adjust to Zach.

  • HaS

I think you guys mean FRONTcourt, backcourt is where the guards play.

    Just bloggin’.

  • dino2008

    my bad. thanks.

  • KBT1615

HA I just got that Bart joke…

“That would be a awesome backcourt Boozer would lead the league in assist.”

  • bob go knicks

    its a “front court”man not a backcourt

  • BiggieLittles

Curry cannot play with any1 in the front cuz he needs 30 touches to be effective an out of them 30 touches there will be 10 turnovers by him.

Curry is garbage an always been he was compare to shaq coming out of H.S due to his height an weight this guy is pure trash an that 1 season he average almost 20 an 7 boards is due to running the offense thru him he turned it over like 4 5 times a game that season it think mayb even more he cannot pass he sucks.

D.lee is 10 times better than Curry.

  • Shea1012

Which I would consider perfectly played by Donnie!

  • dino2008
