Curry’s Camp Over

by Chris Alvino on September 30th, 2009 at 7:01 pm

via Alan Hahn:

Eddy Curry will miss training camp here for a second straight year. The 7-foot center yesterday had an MRI on his injured right calf muscle and it revealed a torn plantaris muscle. He left camp for Manhattan, where he will have blood drained from the injured area. He is expected to miss three-to-five days.

The injury, however, is not considered a serious one because the plantaris muscle, which is located along the calf and behind the Achilles, is considered to be a vestigial part of the human body, akin to the appendix. But the time off the court – and without running – is the greater concern for Curry, who spent the offseason focused on losing weight.
He missed the first week of camp last season because of a bacterial infection and the lost time set him back in conditioning. He dealt with knee issues and weight gain throughout the season and managed to only appear in two games.”
Just a hunch, but 3-5 days will turn into much, much longer than that.  Why do I get the feeling that it will be opening night in Miami, and Curry will be questionable?
You just cannot make this stuff up with him.  The Knicks cannot be hamstrung by him this pre-season.  If Curry can play, then he will play.  If not, then the Knicks have to simply progress forward.  Curry’s absence will likely trigger a starting lineup of Lee- Harrington- Gallo- Chandler- Duhon, with Darko coming off the bench to give some needed size up front.
Curry must show some fortitude and work hard to recover from this setback.  Hopefully he is only out 3-5 days, but with Curry’s track record, I am a bit skeptical right now.

Yepp…this is how i assumed Eddys season will be
    Loaded with injuries

and i was really excited to see him in game 1 of pre-season..

  • Not Hawthorne Wingo

“he injury, however, is not considered a serious one because the plantaris muscle, which is located along the calf and behind the Achilles, is considered to be a vestigial part of the human body, akin to the appendix.”

A vestigial part of the human body… insert punch line here.

  • BiggieSmalls

One down. Just totally BE LIEVE ABLE

who thinks he’ll be back on the court in 5 days?

wait.. how long are they in Saratoga?

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

here is the truth an nothing but the truth
    EDDY CURRY CAREER BEEN OVER.
    get it through your heads
an this guy never lost 40pounds he actually gained 40.

if this guy eva gets a contract offer again in his life it will be no more than the snack machine

  • http://twitter.com/SNYRangersblog1/status/4511275050 @SNYRangersblog1

@TommyDeeTKB The Knicks could use 6’6 Alexei Semenov.

  • NYK Orange and Blue

Wow, what an embarrassment. Is there anyway Commissioner Stern can give us a health exception on the last year of this dude’s contract or something. I am getting so frustrated, I wish this guy would disappear and decline that option on his final year.

  • HaS

Damn you Biggie!!! I guess he’ll be on that stationary bike after all haha. Well he’ll be in _’antoni’s doghouse and languishing on the bench in no time now.

  • HaS

Hopefully if it comes to that, Walshie won’t be stubborn and just buy the guy out.

  • HaS

When he is entering the final year of his contract that is, of course.

  • Section 40

This doesn’t really affect this year. He was never going to be a factor on this team.

Next summer we probably will still have him on out roster **sigh** maybe we can use is expiring contract next year to trade for a good player with a longer contract. I cant see any GM taking this guy this season, unless they want to ge fired.

  • NYK Orange and Blue

Not only is he a cap nightmare, but he is becoming an albatross on the court as well. Nobody wants to see a player who is constantly wearing a suit and pissed off on the sidelines. It is very apparent that this guy never had passion for the game and never really wanted to get better. Guys like Nate, Lee, even Harrington love the game despite the bonehead moves they might pull during game action. I’ll take 20 Al Harringtons before I take 1 Eddy Curry. Somebody needs to intervene here, this guy is not even worth the paper his contract is printed on.

  • jho

Man I’m seriously so sad. All I could think was, “Here we go again.”

  • DaJoka

    People are crazy!!

Curry gets hurt…he’s out for 3-5 days and all of a sudden everybody wants to clown him.

I guess it’s monkey see monkey do huh?

    Terrible…just terrible.

Sure last year he was out but it was much different circumstances.
Curry will be ready to play soon.

Be patient guys…I thought NY had the most knowledgable fans in the world.

  • Qaspec

The problem is even with a buyout his contract will still account for the full amount against the cap. He also would’nt agree to one since he needs every penny he isn;t earning. Remember last year he hadn;t played a single minute and had the nerve to ask for an advance on his salary!!!!!

And if someone did trade for his contract because it’s in the last year, the Knicks will be asked to take back a bad contract or two. He doesn’t want to be traded (says it all the time) so he’s probably happy to sit and be “injured” an do nothing since he knows it becomes more impossible to move him. He also will never turn down that option year. Never, don’t even dream about it.

Besides losing this years draft pick to Utah because of the Curry trade, if the team loses out on Lebron, or even another great player because of Eddy Curry it officially has to be the worst, franchise crippling, devastating move made by any executive in the history of sports (right behind Boston trading Babe Ruth to the Yanks – at least Boston came back 100 years later). It’s like Isiah gave the Knicks herpes when he traded for Eddy. It’s been the gift that keeps on giving and has no cure.

  • Qaspec

DaJoka, you lived up to your handle on that one……funny post…I really like the “Be patient guys….” oh, oh, and the “Curry will be ready to play….” lmao…..whew, good one.

  • bob go knicks

apparently you are the only one who doesnt know eddy curry or the knicks.they are starting to fall already after one day of camp.who will be next?Gallo?Chandler? Will you still be this optimistic when they are 10 games under 500 before christmas?

  • italian stallion

    Disappointing, but not unexpected.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

man some of u guys got hope on the wrong guys

eddy curry is what he is.

playing his cards rite getting paid an don’t have to do anything for it

i guess jerome big snacks an eddy was good friends an eddy learned well from big snacks..

yea i can see gallo slippin something in his back i think it might be a cd disc.lmao…

    duhon getting wornout b4 christmas

u can add the rest ok. keep it going..

  • SilentJay

I can’t really say “shocking”, because with Eddie, the only shocking things are the ridiculous numbers in his contract. Nothing else should surprise us. Saying that a muscle next to your aquilles is vestigial seems weird to me. All I know is that with muscle tissue you can’t just start running your ass off after “3-5 days” (if indeed it is that short) pass, you gotta be patient and start slowly till the musle heals correctly and you don’t have any scar tissue ready to be torn agian. So, while they say it’s a “short injury”, at this point is meaningless. I mean the guy can come back for the second preseason game, get some minutes in his body, and get it screwed up again.
    Great.
I mean, we just can’t win on this one, huh? The one thing we asked for (because we didn’t ask to be a championship contender or even having a dramatic improvement over last season) was for Curry to get some minutes in and ship him out. That’s all. If we don’t get to showcase him because he starts to injure himself, we’re screwed five ways from sunday, and the whole Lebron utopia (which I still think can be done) will be shot to hell. I can try to hope that this will be just a “minor mistep” in his comeback, but this is definitely not how I pictured the big man’s camp. If this is it, I can’t believe I’m gonna be rooting for JJ to get some minutes so somehow we can wave bye bye to him before the deadline.

  • dino2008

Let’s not take this out of proportion…. hahn said curry might play sunday so it cant be too bad. and quite frankly, i doubt anyone will take him even if he does show that he can play so let him be hurt and let us develop guys like j hill and see what we got from darko at the c position

  • Bart

I wonder if Tommy ever gave Donnie a roster suggestion, I would.

  • italian stallion

I think we all see this as the first in a long series of injuries and ailments that will make his comeback impossible. Once a guy has a reputation for being out of shape, overweight, and injury prone as a result of that poor condition, it’s rare to see him turn it around. We were all hoping Curry was going to show up in just as good a shape as the rest of the team. He had the whole summer and specialists working with him. Yet even though he lost some weight (and some people that have seen him are not quite convinced he’s 317 now and actually lost 40 pounds), he’s still way out of basketball shape. This is preposterous for any professional athlete, but doubly preposterous for a guy that is having financial difficulties and whose career is an jeopardy once this contract is done.

IMHO, he was never all that great to begin with. All he can do is score efficiently. But this is obviously a major blow to the team because we can’t move him or that huge contract .

  • Chris Alvino

Yeah maybe I did blow it out of proportion. But given the fact that this is Eddy Curry, would you be surprised if I was right? This guy can turn a jammed finger into a 2 month injury, during which he stays off the treadmill and avoids all activity. His injuries (aside from his heart condition which I will not comment further on) always stem from him being out of shape and unwilling to fight his hardest to recover. Or at last that is my impression.

  • Chris Alvino

    **at least

  • Dave the Rave

Geesh, whata buncha nattering nabobs of negativity. Ya think the Knix are the only pro team that has injuries? Like every other team avoids them???

If Curry had half a brain he’d get down to 285# and make fitness his lifestyle for the next few years. Slim chance!

Why is David Lee ur starting C if u have Darko and Jordan Hill??? U want to say is the 4, fine, please lets not have a undersized C starting the year if we do not have to please. Don’t talk about making the playoffs if David Lee is your starting C please u just sound really stupid if u do. It’s bad enough ur starting a guy in chandler as a 2 when he is not a 2. Wallyworld should be brought in here, he can play the 2 and the 3 and is a better shooter then Chandler, chandler is a 3, period, end of story.

  • dino2008

Chris I 100 percent agree with you… I was just trying to be optimistic because i was so upset when i found out about it. curry cant afford any setbacks clearly. anyway leg injuries tend to linger a la jose reyes….. something so small now apparently has become a torn hamstring. hopefully curry will be okay and this thing wont linger for our sake and his sake……… if he ends up hurting himself or just doesnt stay in good shape, looking on the bright side that is more minutes for J Hill and Darko.

  • gbaked

i think utah has our pick from the marbury trade.

but yeah, the curry trade was real bad.

  • DaJoka

    I smile at your comments…
What would you do if there was a blog set up about the places you work and Donnie Walsh and Mike Dantoni were 2 of the bloggers?
Now..no matter what you did at your job or how hard you tried at your job to make things right..even if you was left with a hole to dig out…….these 2 bloggers always found something wrong with the way you performed at your workplace.
    What would you do?
Would you say “I must be doing something wrong because the general public thinks so.”
Or would you say “These bloggers (some of them) don’t know the ins and outs of the job and their giving opinions based on media reports that we all know come from the most vicious media in the world.”
Just be patient and watch what happens.
It’s cool to be skeptical about situations but be fair.
It’s not Currys fault Isiah gave him that contract. Every single one of you would take that contract if it was offered.
Your picking on the wrong person. If you want to rage a battle…rage it against Isiah…or better yet..wage it against the NBA. It’s the NBA that has the cap in place that says a player gets his money no matter what.
Donnie Walsh has been in the NBA longer than some bloggers here have been alive.
    Patience my friends…….

  • bob go knicks

jordan hill?this guy will be a huge bust, halfway through the season you’ll be asking yourself”WHY DID DONNIE WALSH EVEN PICK THIS GUY?”just then you’ll notice brandon jennings could have been taken!yes!the brandon jennings who will be the first rookie point guard to be on an all-star team since MARK JACKSON…..THATS RIGHT FOLKS,DONT TOUCH THAT DIAL……..all of the enthusiasm that you feel now will prolly be gone by new years eve,as the KNICKS well will play like the KNICKS…….you cant have a good team without good players

  • BiggieSmalls

Not to mention the contract isnt even isured cause of his heart condition.

Not that it would happen but.. if Curry takes a medical retirement then we pay him off we can apply to the league to remove his $$ from our cap after one year..

Doesnt help us for 2010 but thats the option. Most likely EC sits back and plays hearts while collecting his check.

  • Dave the Rave

Jordan Hill is looking like Mikki Chicken Legs Moore, but with even less of a game. I want to find something about him to be optimistic about, but not seeing it. Hope he gains 25 pounds.

    DTR

  • Shea1012

Why do you bother to watch. You’ve probably seen Hill and jennings play 10 times tops, and never in the NBA. Yet you know everything will go down in flames. Does anyone like you? I tend to doubt it, because you are the most negative person I have ever come across on these sports boards. Sports is supposed to be fun – if you have no hope before the season even starts, then why bother.

  • MiamiMoe

WOW!!! It’s incredible how you guys overreact!!…last year Curry couldn’t get into a groove cuz HE WAS AT LEAST 50 LBS OVERWEIGHT!!!! He was literally too fat to come back from a virus.Last yr he had to worry about getting better AND bein Obese AND personal tragedy & embarassment. But he’s back @ a good weight and tore an insignificant muscle…EVERYBODY SLOW DOWN!!…he’ll be back and even if he isn’t Everybody so far w/ the exception of Hill has gotten rave reviews (even Tony D who biggie swore Mike D hated…friendly shot)…Darko is an excellent shape and playin well, GALLO is playin outstanding, & Tony D is NBA ready according to Mike D…those are all huge ? marks that have started out great…BOB you know we’ve had our battles, slow down buddy, Curry gets injured and now Gallo & Chandler are doomed?? And Jennings is franchise savior based on what a McDonald all-star game and a mediocre (at best) showing in Europe?? SLOW DOWN MY MAN AND ENJOY THE SHOW THAT IS THE NYK…Lee is ballin..Nate is ballin…GALLO is ballin…Wilson is ballin..Duhon is ballin..AL is ballin…TONY D is ballin…Darko is ballin..JJ is in excellent shape and we know defensively is ballin…EVERYONE WHO WE NEED TO BE BALLIN IS BALLIN…Curry will be back, WE HAVE ALL YR TO SHOWCASE HIM!! DID YOU THINK HE WOULD BE TRADED AFTED THE NETS GAME???…camp is starting off great i think, like i said, EVERYONE THAT WE NEED TO BE BALLIN IS BALLIN!!!

  • MrFurious

and it will be deserved. the guy doesn’t warrant special attention. the sound you hear is what was left of his career being flushed down the toilet.

  • BiggieSmalls

Give me a 4 year 24 million dollar deal and you can set up a blog and talk about me all day.

  • MrFurious

Wow. So very tempted to just repost your Nate reply from last week. I think you haven’t paid enough attention to this guys track record. There is nothing in his history that suggests he bounces back any time soon. Furthermore, if and when he does play again, we’d be LUCKY to get the Curry from 3 years ago that can score a bit from the post but do absolutely nothing else remotely well. I’m hoping the guy sees some limited minutes this season solely for the purpose of trading his still ridiculously fat ass. (317 is an accomplishment? WTF? Talk to me when you’re under 300 tubby.)

  • MrFurious

First off, what does criticism of his work ethic and lack of shape have to do with his ability to have a work ethic and stay in shape? It’s the nasty bloggers fault he’s a lazy fat ass that takes for granted the money he is paid to do his job? In what world does that make sense?

However, I agree, Its not his fault he got that contract…that is absolutely true…it is however his fault that he has no interest in training or maintaining a level of physical fitness befitting a HIGHLY PAID PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE. His job is to play hoop and stay in shape. That’s it. That’s all.

$10 mil a year to put down the burrito supreme and to pick up some weights. I’m all for patience but we are on year 4 or 5 of his knicks stint and like Big Snacks there’s really nothing to show for it save misery and losing.

  • jaknicksfan

This guy is a disgrace, he works out all offseason loses 40 lbs and still can’t run up the court without getting hurt. Why can’t he just retire and let us move on? Well the positive is that now Darko and Jordan Hill and Harrington who worked out hard and is in great shape will get the minutes and produce for us. We are gonna have a good season! Let’s Go Knicks!
