Friday Night Notes

Day 4 Knicks training camp with Tommy Dee from Big Apple Channel on Vimeo.

The energy was awesome and regardless of what people think about this being a lost season I’m here to say that these guys are ready to compete and ready to win.

How many wins? Who knows.

But the effort is there and the quality of basketball was evident. So much so that I can’t wait to see them play Sunday.

Larry Hughes wants to play. He showed glimpses of how he can contribute. Darko Milicic was finishing around the hoop. Al Harrington was screaming at refs to call charges. Nate Robinson was getting after Chris Duhon and C-Du responded by burying jumpshots from the race track.

Good times.

Watch on Sunday when Jared Jeffries is in the game and after the team makes a basket how he “shows” on the first inbound pass. I really like that. Pushing up on makes is something, as a coach, that I always stressed. When I asked Coach D’Antoni, he simply stated that Jared does many good things and that’s one of them. I’ve been saying for a while that if Jared was a $3 million dollar player on the Spurs, everyone would laud his positive attributes. But on a bad team in NY he’s better off wearing #11 with “Thomas” on the back in stitching.

The best five, offensively, in terms of flow was Darko, Lee, Will, Hughes and C-Du. I’m very interested to see if that continues. They have obvious synergy, but it could be just tonight. That’s why coaches watch tape.

Bottom line was that the coach loved the effort, and frankly so did I.

Video to follow.

sounds good let me see if it looked better…

  • Jeff Cykiert

Anyone know how i can watch the preseason games if I’m not in NY? Any websites?

  • Myles A. Mills

I could tell you, but I’d have to kill you.

  • Myles A. Mills

How’s Will looking, Tommy? How’s his jumper, handle, and first step? Specifically his left hand. If he works on those things I think he can take a huge step this year.

  • Myles A. Mills

Also, Jeff, JustinTV will probably have it. Not sure though.

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

MM- Will is flying under the radar and that’s a good thing.

He made a move last night, let me describe it.

Caught the ball on the right top key and went behind the back with a hard cross over. he got in the lane on two more dribbles and should have dunked it but missed laying it in with the left.

I have and always had handle…needless to say I was impressed with the breakdown.

when you are watching the knicks, and JARRED JEFFRIESVis the best one on the floor :what does it signify?
    A:THE KNICKS STINK
    B:JEFFRIES IS AN UNDSISCOVERED TALENT
    C:

WHEN YOU GET TO A TIME WHEN JARRED JEFFRIES IS THE BEST PLAYER ON YOUR TEAM,YOU SHOULD CALL LEBRON AND SAY “hey lebron,jj is the best player on our team wanna sign with us? CLICK’ hello? ……hello?

    I COUDA MADE THAT TEAM

  • SilentJay

Jeff: If JustinTV doesn’t work out take a look at UStream, they’ve always got sports pretty well covered. Not sure about preseason, but it’s always good to have a second choice.

With JJ…. Damn, I really don’t like his game (I do realize that certain facets of it could be really useful for contenders, definitely), I just don’t think he’s the kinda player this team needs right now. Period. But I can see, if he plays well enough (well being a very flexible word here), him being traded near the deadline by a team that does need the sort of attributes Jeffries has. I just hope that goes through, and of course, if there can be something good in return for this team.
Personally, I don’t care what comes back if they’re able to get a team on the line.

  • CircleLimit4

I’m at grad school at Binghamton right now. I’m thinking of making the trip to Albany on Sunday to see a friend and maybe head to the game. TV might not be enough. Are you gonna be covering the action Tommy?

  • JR

BOB……please refresh my memory an tell me who said jarred jeffries was the best knick on the floor….ever????? i have been on this site for quite a while and commenting for about a year now…and whil i understand your take…i feel that anyone talking up jeffries is trying to start hyping him up to get a buzz and trade him (whether that works or not who cares its better then just saying he sucks)

but bob….i know you are a huge knicks fan i would honestly like to know when you heard any credible source say that jj is the best on the floor…cuz i feel like this post was just saying that jeffries likes to push the ball on offense…which isnt that bad of an idea…..id put him ahead of sun yue, joe crawford, and maybed eddie curry an any other non signed invites….but i dont think ive ever heard the words jj and best player uttered together…

  • Sergio

I really wish I could see what you all see in Jared Jeffries. I think he’s terrible. He’s the second worst player in the league after Jason Collins imo. He just does nothing good to me. He’s garbage on offense and such an overrated defender. : / And it angers me that our 8th pick in the draft is going to rot on the bench and not develop because we’re deciding to play Jeffries instead. Very stupid.

  • jaknicksfan

I understand where your coming from with J.Hill sitting while JJ plays, but we need to showcase him for a trade. After he gets traded at the deadline Hill will get his minutes. I really think he’s gonna be a good player.

  • chrisdudley

jeffries is garbage. he’s past the point in his career where a player can make big strides in terms of production. he is what he is. as sergio said, an overrated defender, and one of the worst players in the game. +/- 4 games until he gets injured?

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

    Just isn’t the case.

Again, if jeffries made 3 million dollars per year and played for the spurs you’d have zero to complain about…

  • BobbyFromBK

Tommy, love your enthusiasm. Let’s see what happens when the season starts. One thing though, from what I’m hearing, Darko should be our starting center and D. Lee sould slide over to his natural position at the 4.

    Go Knicks!

  • BiggieSmalls

    Love the Champagne enthusiasm!!

Im happy if this year they

    play hard all season,
    play good defense –REALLY improve,
    extend the rotation
trade JJ at least (im not so optimistic about EC)
keep an open mind to ANY trade at the deadline.
Get the Rookies involved before mid season

If we do all that we MAY get to 39 wins

  • Campbana

I agree with Biggs escpecially on the point of extending the rotation so that we maximize the energy level and potential of each player in the SSOL. Trading JJ would be excellent . Trading curry would be paramount. T.Douglass is gonna rep the blue and orange well. Push it to the limit Biggs, let us see 40 in the win column. We might steal a game or two.

[...] being a lost season I’m here to say that these guys are ready to compete and ready to win,” wrote Tommy Dee.  Dee’s enthusiasm is always nice, but not everyone there associated the evenings effort [...]

  • chrisdudley

tommy, i really disagree with you on this one, I hope that I’m wrong and Jeffries makes strides, but he will be the same player. Also, I agree with the argument that if jeffries came off the bench for a contending team making half the money he makes now, yeah, he could be an asset. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case here. This is a team with an small chance of making the playoffs in a mediocre conference. It’s a joke that he’ll see floor time when our #8 pick is riding pine in what will most likely be another lost season.

  • CircleLimit4

I agree, Except if we make some good moves at the deadline I think our potential tops out at 45 wins.

Most important thing right now is moving Jeffries, I think Curry is all but a lost cause.

  • CircleLimit4

I agree, he’d be known as ” veteran defensive specialist.” But he also would be getting 5-10 mins/night instead of 20-30.

  • SilentJay

D’antoni already said it was gonna be 9-10 guys. That’s an improvement over last season. On top of that, we have more size in the back court, and it would seem, no way to foresee of course, the now there’s a back up PG. So maybe we have reasons to look up.
JJ has to play if we want to trade him, and since I agree that Eddie’s gonna be near impossible to ship out, let’s give Jeffries some minutes to get him out of NY

  • HaS

45 wins? If they win 45 games they are definitely in the playoffs and maybe a 6 or 7th seed, that’s just delusional. I respect your fandom though,

  • The_Guy

Our # 8 pick has to prove he’s not going to foul out of games in 5 minutes and can help the team win. I’m shocked that you guys all assume they’re just going to hand him minutes without earning them just cuz he’s a lottery pick.
