Starting Lineup Announced

by Tommy Dee on October 3rd, 2009 at 2:30 pm

Coach D’Antoni unveiled tomorrow’s starting lineup, choosing to start and reward the veterans. He was quick to tell us that he’s more concerned with who finishes than who starts, and hopes the players are as well.

PG- Chris Duhon
SG- Larry Hughes
SF- Al Harrington
PF- David Lee
C- Jared Jeffries

I’m not psyched about this group from a defensive rebounding standpoint, but they did show solid flashes of offensive cohesion. You should see Nate and Douglas playing together and minutes from Chandler, Darko and Gallo as D’Antoni mentioned “9 or 10″ playing. That could mean Jordan Hill, who impressed me very much today, is on the outside looking in, but we’ll see.

Video from today will be up later.

Shout out to Gym Rat Alex who stopped me in the bleachers to say he dug the site. And have to say a huge thank you to the Knicks PR people who allowed for great access.

And of course a big thanks to Tom and Joanne Stanton for their warmth and hospitality. Mrs. Stanton makes the best pork chops in Saratoga hands down.

    Seriously?

This starting line-up is boring as hell, I mean are you kidding me?

Last year’s lottery pick on the bench and this year’s lottery pick out of the rotation?

    Wtf is wrong with D’Antoni?

  • chrisdudley

    nightmare

  • Magik_Trick

No big deal, coach trying out the vets

realistically, none of them are getting more than 20 minutes…minutes will be spread…keep in mind we’r pushing a 20 man roster

  • Mucha

Hopefully he’ll change his pre-season line-up when the season starts.

He has to, I mean it’s ridiculous.

The fact that Jordan Hill could be out of the rotation because D’Antoni likes to have a small group of players is absolutely crazy. CRAZY.

  • SilentJay

It’s preseason. Relax. No harm in trying out the vets to see how they come out straight out of the gate. Most likely is that the next starting line up changes completely. Besides, it’s true what was mentioned: what matters is who finishes the game.
I’m not particularly crazy either with the names, but what the hell. Until the season formally starts, I don’t care who starts the game, I care on how everybody plays and if I like what I see enough to project. That’s the important thing.

  • J_Starks3

As long as Gallo gets his 30 minutes I am happy.

  • BMan

Some of you folks seem to be clueless about the diplomatic aspects of being a coach.

If the veterans some of you hate so much are outplayed by our younger players during the pre-season, MDA will make lineup adjustments based on these developments. Starting a veteran lineup puts less pressure on some of the younger players to immediately justify their starting status, and lets certain vets see that they will have an opportunity to compete for playing time, and not just get moved aside by our younger players for the sake of change. This strategy helps team chemistry, even if it does not satisfy some fans starting day 1.

If some react this strongly to pre-season lineup 1.0, it is going to be a long season for some of you.

  • Mucha

Well maybe you’re right but still – D’Antoni has to understand that either one of his lottery picks has to start. Veterans? Eric Gordon, Russell Westbrook, Brooke Lopez, Anthony Randolph, Kevin Love know that they’ll start regardless

The first game of the regular season will tell if I did overreact about that.

  • BiggieSmalls

Starting the game with 2 of our best defenders on the floor (Hughes, JJ) doesnt sound like a bad idea.

Bring Nate, Chandler and Gallo, Darko off the bench and mix in Douglas/Nate for a spell. Darko will never see the ball unless he grabs a board.

Darko has some personality on him. Real Shy.. Talks like Lurch. I wonder how he will fare with the media. He certainly looked uncomfortable in Tommy’s vid.

Duhon and Lee should get around 30 minutes or less on game day.

  • JR

Tommy, Thank you for all the work you have done with training camp this season. Its far beyond other sites, and made the end of the mets season a little easier to bear…

I understand starting vets for the first preseason game and then mixing in the younger guys but is jeffries really gonna guard brook lopez? Please let hill get his reps in this preseason, he deserves a chance to make the rotation.

  • Cheech

Its going to be interesting to see what Mike D does with the lineup and the rotation. In my mind, the biggest problem is Hughes. bc he is the only natural 2 on the team, yet he also has no future with us and he could stunt the growth of the younger players with his profinity for chucking.
Id like to see duhon, wilson, danilo, al, and dave in the game down the stetch. i dont think we have to say that wilson is the 2 and danilo the 3.

Rather i think danilo’s offensive game fits a 2, and wilson’s is perfect for the three. then on defense wilson can guard the other teams best swingman.

That would obviously not work if the other team has two good big men. but so few teams do. If they start jj its fine with me, bc as much as he is offensively challeneged he is a valuable team player and defender.

I dont know how Hill gets on the court with Lee, Al, and Darko seemingly ahead of him. Plus Wilson and Danilo are semi 4′s…..

Cant wait for the game. wat time is it on? and its on MSG, right?

  • Cheech

Amen, to the part about the mets. Thank God for the J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets too. Sunday will be a fun sports day

  • DinnerDog

Who cares, you know all these guys are going to be in the rotation. Just because you’re starting doesn’t mean you’re going to get the most minutes. Look at Nicholas Batum last year for the Blazers. He started most of their games but only averaged 18 points a game.

Let the coach does his job. He knows basketball, and more importantly his players, better than we do.

  • CircleLimit4

    Interesting.

This does show how much confidence D’antoni has for a few things; either Lee or Jeffries spreading the floor a little, the defensive agility of Harrington and the play making abilities of Duhon. I’m not sure if Al and Lee give us
enough firepower offensively, so Duhon will have to create a some opportunities for Hughes and Jeffries.

My only real qualm with the starting lineup is Jeffries being there thus sliding Lee to the 4. I’m thinking though that Jeffries might be in there only for tipoff purposes and as reward for impressing coach in practices. I gotta believe that after a few mins Jeffries will get put on the bench and they’ll go small by adding Will and/or Gallo.

What that lineup does is make our bench deep as all hell. We could get 60 points and 20 rebounds off the bench with Nate, Gallo, and Wil alone. Darko, Hill and Douglas would round out a very formidable secondary unit.

Overall, not thrilled with that line-up, but I’m sure there will be some experimenting between now and the meat of the season.

  • J_Starks3

Anyone has tip off time and is it on MSG???

  • italian stallion

    LOL.

This team is going to be 15 points behind at the end of the first quarter. Then we’ll bring in some combination of Gallo, Wilson, and Nate for Jeffries and Hughes and we’ll be up by 10 at halftime.

  • jg2112

Mucha, and everybod complaining about the starting five for tomorrow…… RELAX.

Really, don’t sweat it. If we get blown out early, so be it. It’s preseason, it’s time to get those boys into some playing shape and basketball rythm.

And for the most relaxing part, Mike D played Marbury last season during the PRE-season and we all saw how minutes he got once the REGULAR season started.

So let the man play with his toys while he can… who knows, maybe he wants to show case Hughes and JJ during the preseason for future trades? Whatever, Im just glad we are getting under way. And like Mike D said, it’s not about who starts but about who finishes. Hughes, JJ and Duhon bring on some good defense… but our second unit (if it would stay like that) would be the most talented of the league. With Chandler, Galo and Nate we would out score any 2nd unit in the league.

@TommyDeeTKB Gallo Will and Nate off the Becnh is not so bad

  • The_Guy

@ Mucha – Last year’s lottery pick shouldn’t just be handed a starting job because he’s last year’s lottery pick. He’s coming off of back surgery and he hasn’t earned it yet.

If you do that what incentive does that give anyone to play hard in training camp or in practice? No team just hands a rookie a starting job. That’s not how it works.

Kobe Bryant didn’t just start for the Lakers. Eric Gordon didn’t start for the Clippers. Michael Beasley, the 2nd pick in the draft last year didn’t start for the Heat. The L.A. Clippers are using this year’s # 1 pick Blake Griffin off the bench backing up Marcus Camby right now.

Oklahoma City began their season with Russell Westbrook coming off the bench…until he EARNED the right to start. Kevin Love didn’t start for the T Wolves at all last season.

Tyrus Thomas was a top 4 pick and he didn’t start for the Bulls. Andrea Bargnani was the # 1 pick for Toronto and he didn’t start right away either.

Joe Alexander, the Bucks’ lottery pick from last year, barely played. But the guy they drafted in the second round, Luc Richard Mbah Moute was in the starting lineup all year.

I can go on and on, but I think you get the point right now.

  • The_Guy

@ Mucha – How long have you been watching basketball? Judging by your comments it doesn’t look like you’ve been watching very long. No team just starts a player they don’t think will be ready, just because he’s a lottery pick.

And for the record, Anthony Randolph started 22 games last season and only played in 63 games total. Most of them in the 2nd half of the season when the Warriors were out of the playoff race. Meanwhile his fellow rookie, who went undrafted last year Anthony Morrow started 17 games but played in 67 games and averaged 22 min per game, to Randolph’s 18 mpg.

Wanna know how many games Joe Alexander started for Milwaukee as a rookie last year?

    Zero.

  • The_Guy

    Well said BMan.
