Charles Smith Snubs HOF Induction
Finger point to Sean Kilkelly for the link.
“…Monday night at the Greenwich Hyatt, Smith was nowhere to be found. No one from his Charles D. Smith Foundation was to be found either. Several weeks of phone calls and e-mails from Tom Chiappetta, the executive director of the Fairfield County Sports Commission, telling Smith about his induction and about the awards dinner have received nothing but silence from the former Brtidgeport hoop star.
When Chiappetta finally reached someone at the Charles Smith Foundation, the answers to his questions were all “No.”
Will Smith show up to accept his award? No.
Will anyone from Smith’s family show up accept his award? No.
Will anyone from the Foundation show up to accept his award? No.
Not only is that disappointing, it’s embarrassing. Smith isn’t just turning his back on the Sports Commission, he’s turning his back on the city where he grew up. Last year the Connecticut Post recognized Smith as one of Bridgeport’s Finest, a special athlete who starred at every level of basketball he played, from Harding High to the University of Pittsburgh to the Los Angeles Clippers, New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs of the NBA.
But you know what? I don’t think Charles Smith is very special right now.
By not attending Monday’s dinner, Smith is basically saying, “I don’t care about the Fairfield County Sports Commission” when that he should be doing is applauding all the work the Commission has done in his hometown since its creation in 2004…” More.
