Hughes Buyout?

by Chris Alvino on October 20th, 2009 at 7:54 am

Sam Smith of Bulls.com believes that the Knicks might be trying to buy out the final year of Larry Hughes‘ contract.

via Smith:

“Hughes, meanwhile, said he’s not worried since, “I’m a proven scorer in this league.” When did we hear that one? Hughes also offered that he doubts former teammate LeBron James will leave the Cavs and for James it’s not about playing in a big market like New York. The Knicks had to love that. The speculation in New York is the Knicks will try to buy out Hughes, who then could return to the Cavs with the Cavs uncertain about the status of Delonte West.”

It is not Donnie Walsh’s style to buy players out of their contracts.  If he waited as long as he did with Marbury, then why would he buy out Larry Hughes?

The bottom line is that Hughes is not a good scorer in this league anymore.  He can take the ball to the rim, but he is atrocious from deep.  It is too bad for the Knicks that he loves to shoot from places where he cannot make the shots.  But I just cannot see a buyout coming.  Perhaps a trade just for the sake of getting him off the team would work, but remember that the Knicks cannot bring in any contracts that extend beyond this season.

Move him for Bell come on Donnie!

  • DW2010

Speculation in Cleveland is that the Cavs are so dissatisfied with Shaq and his bloated contract (and waistline), that they are willing to trade him to the knicks for former bulls Larry Hughes and Eddy Curry.

Tell Mr. Smith that we in New York can make up our own preposterous rumors wthout being given credit for his.

If Walsh had decided to buy out anyone’s contract, it would Curry’s and not Hughes’.

  • itzyung1

Even if Donnie liked buying out contracts Curry would be the last one to get bought out.
    Big years and big numbers.
at least larry has one year left.

This is the most frustrating thing about Donnie.

If Hughes is on the outside looking in and will be stewing on the bench just buy him out at a 3 mil discount and send him home to get a contract from someone else.

I just dont understand the issue. We HAVE TO let some contracts melt away in order to get under the cap what’s the difference if we do it now or later?

Doing it now removes a potential malcontent and opens a roster spot.

i wouldnt be surprised if larry hughes wouldnt accept a 3 mill discount.
because by his logic, he earned every cent of that contract.

and he’d probably only get the veteran minumujm from any team. and we all know that is not 3 mil.

  • BiggieSmalls

that worked well for Marbury getting his NEXT contract.

That would make up for anything lost bya ccepting a buyout and getting to a team taht will actually allow him to play.

  • paulempson

Marbury TV killed any chance of that happening along side his fantastic selfless player skills.

I loved how he was gonna go to Boston and did $hit.

Biggest D-head in NYK history that I can think of .

Still spewing we have no pick thanks to that deal.

  • paulempson

Find a taker in a 3 way.l Dude makes way to much money to trade with any team.

Doubt he’s a buy out kind of guy by the way he’s been yappin.

  • BiggieSmalls

no one is getting another contract sitting on the bench waving a towel.

Marbury sat out most of the year and then was hirribly out of rhythm.

I can argue that if he left the Knicks at the beginning of the season and latched onto a title contender for a full season he could have been offered more than the vet minimum for 2009/10
