Who’s In D’Antoni’s Fave Five?

by Ben Kopelman on October 21st, 2009 at 9:02 am

According to a report in the NY Post, with only a single preseason game  left on the docket, the Knicks’ starting lineup still remains up in the air.  But that doesn’t mean we aren’t at least inching closer to the ultimate unveiling.

“Mike D’Antoni still can’t decide on his starting lineup for the season opener in Miami in eight days, but one thing is sure: the franchise’s future, sniper Danilo Gallinari, won’t be in it.”

But other than Dino, it seems as though from Nate Rob to Harrington, anything is a possibility at this point.

“D’Antoni has left all the players in the dark about their roles — an ominous sign with their preseason schedule ending tomorrow versus the Nets.

“D’Antoni said he is still struggling to find a starting five, admitting yesterday he may take the unconventional route of going on a game-to-game basis in the regular season.”

Tommy offered up his thoughts on who should start and what the rotation should be yesterday.  I myself don’t have much of an opinion on who should start and who should sit, but I do think it is playing with fire to go into the season with roles undefined.

Between Larry Brown and Isiah Thomas, this team has seen its share of that “unconventional route” and it didn’t end up particularly pretty.  Not to say those coaches failed simply because they didn’t have a routine lineup, but it sure didn’t help them along the way.

I trust D’Antoni — maybe more than I should — and I am confident he will sort it out and have a steady and consistent rotation within a week into the season.

If not, buckle up and hold on tight people — it might be a bumpy ride…

Doesn’t really matter whose starting, but Will & Gallo should be getting about 30 minutes each, and Hill & Douglas should be getting at least 10-20 minutes a night.

Duhon stinks and should not be playing 34 minutes, more like 25 a night. Those extra minutes are for Douglas

Jeffries should be playing about 15-20 minutes, not 30. Those extra minutes are for Hill.

  • itzyung1

    Starting 5 should be
    Duhon
    Nate
    Wilson
    Lee
    Jeffries

I really like our Defensive lineup by the way in
    Toney
    Nate
    Wilson
    Jeffries
    Darko
They did pretty good against the Big Three.

  • BiggieSmalls

Hill isnt getting anywhere close to the rotation at this point.

    He is Raw as sushi.

  • BiggieSmalls

Looks like MDA listened to me with the starting 5 against the Celts.

Starting Al with Chandler at the 2 and JJ at the 5. Duhon can handle the rock at the start and shouldnt get more than 30 a nite.

JJ — while starting — should NOT be playing 30. He is really going to have to show me something to make me believe he has a shot. Until then JJ taking 5 3′s a game (he only hit one) and ten total shots is unacceptable.

I’d like to see Darko get those JJ minutes. and Douglas to get the Duhon minutes. Hill is just not ready for prime time. If Donnie is so high on him then trade Lee for a draft pick and Lets roll with “the Next Amare”. Let him practice and build confidence then deal with it at the trade deadline.

  • jaknicksfan

Darko should start even though we have to showcase JJ, he brings the shotblocking and defense we need. As far as the rest Big Al and D.Lee plus will.c and Duhon and T.Doug deserves to split minutes with Duhon and eventually take his job as starter.

  • BiggieSmalls

you are right about showcasing JJ.

I just fear that giving him 30 a game will expose his skills.

  • Bruno

    Duhon
    Chandler
    Harrington
    Lee
    Darko
    ————–
    Gallo
    Nate
    JJ
    TD
    Hill

Did anyone notice the first play of the game yesterday KP in the post Lee picks up a quick foul I will say it again he cannot play the 5.

Also we didn’t get back in the game in the first quarter until Mike D took Lee out of the game for Gallinari, im glad to see he will pull him and fix the mistake of starting him.

Last night Lee basically came off of the bench and he was still effective, and we won the game because we for the most part played our system. David can play but in my eyes he should come off the bench hes way more effective that way.

    Lineup :

    PG – Chris Duhon

    SG – Nate Robinson

    SF – Wilson Chandler

    PF – AL Harrington

    C – Jared Jefferies

  • CircleLimit4

    Duhon
    Chandler/Nate
    Harrington
    Jeffries
    Lee

I think would keep Chandler at the 2 and continue bringing Nate off the bench. Chandler would be better at denying the ball down, rebounding and can provide some help D against Lopez in a pinch.

But even though Chandler is better for one-on-one D, Nate is better at causing havoc in the passing lanes and could be more troublesome to Harris. It would also open up minutes for Douglas in the second unit. We also did win with Nate starting last time we played the Nets and he should be rewarded for his leap in defense prowess.

    I’m not sure. It’s a toss-up for me.

Also, if Darko finds some sort of offensive rhythm this year, I would consider starting him over Lee in future games against the Nets.

    Duhon
    Nate
    Chandler
    Harrington
    Darko

I would take out Jeffries, shift Harrington to the 4 against Yi and let Chandler take the 3 hopefully filling Lee’s offensive void. Now only do you have a defensive big man on Lopez and a good scoring trio in Al, Wil and Nate, but Jeffries/ Lee could cause mayhem in the second unit. Lee would be guarding the bigs with minimal offensive impact and Douglas hopefully develops chemistry with big men who can actually score.

  • CircleLimit4

Perkins was a non-factor offensively. Lee was also keeping us close for a good portion of the game and was getting key rebounds, especially on the offensive glass.

We won with Lee starting, plain and simple. Same with the Nets, twice.

  • Bart

For me the issue with not starting Nate is Wilson has bad nights offensively if that happens and Nate’s not in the lineup we will probably lose that game because we will be down by so many pts.

  • Bart

When did Gallo get subbed into the game for David, it was like 3mins in.

  • Bob

we won the game because the celtics put in their bench players in the 4th quarter while the KNICKS left their starters in.GARNETT,PIERCE,AND ALLEN were all on the bench in the final minutes, meaning the celts were not playing it as if it were a meaningful game

  • joetheknick

The whole tenor of Berman’s article that D”Antoni’s indecison is “ominous” is ridiculous. Like the fans, D’Antoni wants to win and he will set the lineup and the minutes with winning in mind. We can disagree on who should start but at the end of the day it is all about winning. Why is Berman still talking about Larry Brown???

  • HaS

You’re not a real Knicks fan if you noticed that!

  • HaS

Apparently that doesn’t matter to these Knick fans. Hey maybe they’ll play the bench in every 4th quarter of every game during the season against the Knicks.

  • HaS

The same reason everyone keeps talking about Isaiah Thomas.

  • MiamiMoe

I think the starting lineup we went w/ last night is the way we should go and i completely agree that JJ played too long and Darko should get more play…Duhon is also gettin too many min and Douglas should’ve got more burn, …BOB yea, the celts big 3 came out in the 4th but the whole time they were in it was close w/ their biggest lead being 7 and our biggest lead being 10 while they were in…DLEE played great even though we missed a lot of assignments and blown help coverage we are playin w/ more grit and if we can knock down shots consistently then we can be a very good team…I know we aren’t gettin love from ‘experts’ and the reality is that no matter what we do we will always be the ‘garbage knicks’ but i think thats fine cuz we will be overlooked every game and if we can play like we did last night then we will be hard to gameplan for and by the time teams think they can adjust during games it’ll be too late…

  • Bart

I notice that u have a man crush on David Lee.

  • Bob

@HaS ..i cant believe half the shit that im hearing on this blog.am i missing something?these are the same crap knicks thaty ive seen the last 5 years.on this blog ive read that Chandler is gonna be a star,LOVE the Jordan Hill pick,T Douglas is our future starting PG,and “IN DONNIE WE TRUST” Maybe some of these guys should start looking at other teams rosters. But I say this:Any team that boasts AL HARRINGTON as their best player cannot possibly make the playoffs! AM I BEING TOO NEGATIVE?

  • MiamiMoe

I think there is a lot to be said about how we came back after the thrashing the Celts gave us the first time…you can tell in the C’s demeanor that they thought it was gonna be a whoopin and when we kept it close and even held a lead they were noticeably frustrated (esp. Pierce) w/ fouls and turnovers…and then they come outta the game like ‘oh w/e this game don’t mean nothin’ IF THE C’s are so deep and dominant than their 2nd team can thrash the ‘garbage knicks’, NOT!!…THIS ISN’T THE FIRST PRESEASON GAME AND AGAINST A DIV RIVAL YOU DON’T PLAY FOR MEDIOCRATY…’experts’ & players can downplay it all they want but the C’s are pissed they lost that game…We’re comin in to our own and playin better, i’m excited for the season and i can’t wait for the end of Nov when experts will be like ‘the NYK are a fluke they’ll come back to earth’ and at the end of Dec they’ll be sayin HOW BOUT THOSE KNICKS?!?!?!?!?!

  • Bob

watching the NBA moe,the last 5 minutes of every game are usually the most crucial.you cant honestly think that if this were a regular season game, and the celts had their best “5″ in there til the end ,that the KNICKS woulda pulled this one out.granted that the KNICKS played a good game, but you cant give them any more than that. RIDE THEIR ASSES TIL THEY CAN PROVE THEY CAN PLAY WITH THE BIG BOYS. stop being so goddam soft on them

  • Bob

if the Cs were pissed about losing this game ,they woulda left the big 3 in the whole game

  • Bart

They kept up with them the whole game give credit where its due that game felt regularseason-ish

  • gbaked

    Yes and Yes.

While it is true that there is some excess love on this blog… chandler COULD be a star, the Jordan Hill pick was making Lemonade with Lemons, and TD does look like a legitimate #2 PG for a long long time (something very important). I do trust Donnie!

However, you are being OVER negative.

Our guys played a heck of a ballgame last night. Yes, if the Cs left the stars in they may have pulled away with it… but they may not have. Doesnt really matter.

We will prob lose to the elite teams in the League on most nights, but thats ok. We have to make sure we beat bad teams and consistently grow and make progress.

its called rebuilding dude… gonna have to deal with it.

  • brownhornet

Omg. There is so much to write. I don’t know why people don’t see the hand writing in the wall. There us a trade coming soon.. Blockbuster.! This team can not compete with JJefferies is sucks , let me repeat he sucks. !!!! We need or should use curry when he gets back . Fuck it if he can’t play run him untill he is fuckin ready. These guys make millions and you mean he is still not in game shape.. Darko is a bust!! I shouted that shit years ago! Please listen to sound reason I have a eye for the game plus played this game.. Dyhon is a keeper. I like the rock in his hands he just need to keep his confidence. Nate can’t stay for long at the 2spot he will get exsposed. I like Al coming if the bench . Let Galo get his feet wet and start at the 3…. Starting will at the 2 is not a long term thing either. Your steady is Dlee don’t give this boy up and be a fool. b/c when you get your so call Athletic 4 you slide Dlee to the 5.. Or keep him as a back up… Did I say that JJ sucks omg he suck has no fundamental for the fuckin game. Package these guys DW get rid of hill,JJ and Nate . Curry idk but if u can get him to play sombody might take him cause we need a wing player. You might have to give up someone like Will to get rid of curry. You know what if you can get a player you do it.. Prediction 37wins…

  • HaS

Aww that’s cute. Was that a little dig? I guess you have a man crush on me? ;-)

  • brownhornet

Please for give me I’m typing on the iPhone .. Great phone , just takes use to typing

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

G money- don’t waste your time he wants us to have isiah back.

Trying to create a stir about walsh even tho he knows full-well Walsh hasn’t shifted from the plan….at all.

Like isiah shifted 50 times because he had no clue how to run an organization.

    HaS is an Isiah apologist.

We gave isiah 5 years, I’ll give Donnie more than 1 and a half, thanks.

  • HaS

I’ll admit Bob can be a little overly negative, but no more than some guys here are overly positive. Gotta love Bob man, he keeps you guys balanced lol.

  • Bob

its not rebuilding if over half of this team will be gone next year due to contracts expireing

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

But it’s not news to anyone…

and by the way…can someone who has knocked these guys all preseason tell me about the tips and steals and the defensive effort?

If Darko plays 15 minutes and only scores 2 points and grabs 3 rebounds people think he sucks.

Meanwhile his 1-2 blocks and 3 deflections leading to a TO or missed shot just kept 8-12 points off the board.

    RECOGNIZE!!!!

  • Bob

    mediocrity

  • Bob

its an effin PRE-SEASON game! they should be gettin ready for real games, not tryn to win fake ones

  • HaS

I think he was directing that negativity comment at Bob, Tommy. Thanks for the shout out though man I appreciate it.

First of all, I’m far from an Isaiah apologist. Once again, why does everyone need to bring this dude’s name up to defend Walshie? Weird. He’s gone, I would like to forget that era personally.

Second, where did I “…create a stir about…” Donnie in this thread? I have criticized him (in other threads) about this offseason, yes. I have questioned his draft picks also, but I never claimed to have a problem with the 2010 plan.

Walshie is the one who has shifted from that plan first by taking Lee and Nate off the market. Then by selecting players who he admitted will take a while to develop or are considered “projects” when there was arguably better or more NBA ready talent that could contribute right away.

I’m down with 2010 all the way. I’m just not convinced he has done the best job in assembling a team that can lure a top tier player (or two) from another team. He has created a logjam in the front-court (3 and 4 spots) no Center, no Shooting Guard and no starting Point Guard.

I’ll also add, I have never called for a firing of Mr. Walsh, so why do you assume I’m not giving him more than “1 and a half”?

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

So let me get this straight. If lebron and wade stay, it’s because we didn’t draft jennings and Brook lopez??

    next…

  • HaS

The defense has been nice and I have acknowledged it more than once, I for one love Toney’s energy on that end of the floor. Mostly everyone seems to be putting in more effort defensively and at least trying (so I do “RECOGNIZE”), but Lee still hasn’t gotten the memo, which is disturbing. Even Danilo gave a hard foul to prevent a layup against the Celtics, _avi_ only gives out “and 1′s” with his Matador defense.

I’m also glad _’antoni has had an epiphany and decided to acknowledge that defense can also help you win games. However, here’s my thing, it’s a year late! So, pardon me if I don’t jump up and down for the coach and team doing what he/it gets paid to do.

The reason I’m not very excited is because the team is still not very good and I can’t see where the optimism comes from that Mr. James will be moving to New York a year from now. Maybe you guys are seeing something I’m not. Please enlighten me.

  • Bob

if lebron and wade stay or go ,drafting JORDAN HILL was still a mistake, not signing RAMON SESSIONS is still a mistake, not getting a 2 guard is still a mistake, not trading JJ when he had the chance is still a mistake, signing CHRIS DUHON is still a mistake, signing ROBERSON last year was still a mistake,if its true that not trading WILSON CHANDLER so we could get RUBIO is true…..Im not saying he should be fired but jeezuz how much slack can you cut this guy before you stop saying “in donnie………blah blah

  • HaS

It’s not about Brandon Jennings or Brook Lopez.

I think not drafting for need and not drafting the most ready to contribute players hurts their chances to convince players that are used to winning to join a team that has been losing for 10 years.

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

it means nothing…Hill will be a good player. Maybe not worthy of the 8th pick but tell me how many 8th picks have been since day 1 of the draft in 1985?

    Thanks.

Jordan hill is supposed to be a championship caliber player after 1 year? Come on.

No one is cutting anyone slack, it’s about giving him some time to do his job and not acting like he’s asleep at the wheel.

he knows what he’s doing. Knock him if the team, Lebron or not, stinks NEXT YEAR. so no it’s a year EARLY not late.

    next

  • Bob

there is no need to bring up how good we are trying on deee, everyone else here are falling over each other to say it….BTW HaS..i dont thibnk im overly negative ..im just callin it the way i see it…no matter how good the little things look,we still dont have the TALENT to be any good.if the KNICKS try their collective asses off and play at their utmost desire ,we will win 37 games..and like i always say,i know next year we will throw money at some all-stars and be better but im just talkin bout this season and how KNICKS mgmt is ripping off the fans for not trying to get better

  • HaS

I love how Tommy picks out 1 thought out of context and then dismisses your entire thought.

I don’t think my opinions are irrational.

You’re a smart man, deep down you can’t believe this is a playoff team.

You have to have SOME doubt that LeBron is “definitely” coming to a bad team who hasn’t won a playoff game in like 9 years, that still has huge gaps to fill in it’s lineup.

  • HaS

I meant it’s a year late to finally “RECOGNIZE” there is a defensive end of the floor. With the moves, or lack thereof, I wouldn’t expect the team not to stink next year too. If they get LeBron they would be a playoff team, but probably a lower level playoff team minus Lee, Harrington, Robinson and to a lesser extent Duhon.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

he has assembled players for danny boy cuz danny boy don’t need certain players he just needs midgets to play center.lmao…

  • Bob

after all is said and done ..CHRIS DUHON IS THE WORST PLAYER ON THIS TEAM,,,….SOMETHING SHOULD BE DONE ABOUT IT

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

    to a degree he is
    hold on
    i think your rite BOB
mayb he is better than hill?
    hughes?
    curry?.
    lol
