Don’t Read Too Much Into Stern
In a report for the NY Post, David Stern implied that he would like to see LeBron James continue his career in Cleveland after he hits free agency.
via the Post:
““None whatsoever, although I hope it is in Cleveland,” Stern said when asked where he thinks James will finish his career.”
I am going to keep my LeBron posts to an absolute minimum until the time is right. That said, this NY Post link came up in the comments section, so I figured that I would touch on it quickly.
David Stern is the commissioner of the NBA. Part of his job description is to be impartial towards all 30 teams in the league, regardless of what his heart might be telling him. LeBron James is currently a Cleveland Cavalier, so Stern has no choice but to say that he hopes LeBron stays in his hometown. If he mentioned any of the other 29 teams, there would be an uproar throughout the league. Stern would lose all credibility and would violate his professional duties as the commissioner. This would essentially be tampering by the commissioner. Not good. If LeBron were to sign with NY next July, Stern will not question his move and reaffirm his belief that LeBron should have stayed home.
Again, do not buy too much into what Stern will say about LeBron this season. The same goes for the rest of the premier free agents. Stern has a duty to remain impartial. He will not publicly attempt to sway LeBron’s decision.
