News: Gay To Become 2010 RFA

by Ben Kopelman on November 3rd, 2009 at 9:53 am

Via ESPN:

“Memphis Grizzlies forward Rudy Gay will become a restricted free agent this summer after he and the team were unable to strike a deal before the NBA’s 11:59 p.m. ET deadline on Monday, the Memphis Commercial Appeal reported.

“An NBA source said the Grizzlies’ final offer was a five-year deal worth about $50 million, according to the report, while Gay was seeking a deal similar to the five-year, $65 million extension the Portland Trail Blazers agreed to with LaMarcus Aldridge.”

Pile another name onto the summer’s heap…

What has Gay done in the NBA? He’s basically the same as Lee, good player but career loser so far.

Besides do we really need another SF?

  • Ben Kopelman

    1. id say hes better than lee…he has the ability to take over much more than lee does

    but really

    2. other teams might fall in love with his “ceiling” and focus on him more than another free agent…

the more bodies in the pile the better.

Career loser? On Mem? He’s the reason that team loses? Every player who does not win a ring is a career loser? Gay has a lot of talent. It takes a team. He’s ready to win.

Lee is proving to be one of the league’s most efficient big men in the paint. I really like how he looks out there. He didn’t seem so bad D-ing up up Omeka either, but we just got beat in the paint for the simple fact that we have no size and they have lots of it. Imagine if Lee played with one of the leagues great passers; he’s so easy to find in the paint.

Galo and Lee look to have a great thing going on; they appear to have a feel for eachother. The more of those combos you have in a lineup, the better.

I have no interest in rudy gay.

Oh… and chandler just looks awful. He really looks like he has no idea what he’s doing. I can’t watch him step a foot inside the arc for a long 2 once more.

Toney needs to figure some stuff out but i like how he pushes the ball. He is one of those guards who can burn a whole team in one sprint down the court and get around anybody… Duhon can’t get around anybody.

    Starters should be
    Duhon
    Hughes
    Galo
    Harrington
    Lee

With chandler darko and nate/tony off the bench.

He’s talented. But how does he fit on this team in 2010 and beyond, anyway? LeBron’s a 2/3, Gallo’s a 2/3, Chandler’s a 3/4, JJ’s a 2 – if we get him, Gallo’s the 3; same with T-Mac… I’m sorry, but if you’re scared you’re not gonna get LeBron, focus on just signing Bosh and trading for a 1 (Nash? Kidd?). If you can, getting a 2 in here after the fact would be great. If not, stop-gap it for a year and see what you do with more cap space in ’11.

(Not you, as in Ben – just the general “you”)

Timberwolves coach Kurt Rambis has praised the ability of Ramon Sessions to run the team’s triangle offense.

Sessions played 31 minutes against Phoenix on Sunday night, while Flynn, the team’s starting point guard, played fewer than 19.

Rambis used the word “exceptional” to describe to the Star Tribune how Sessions “organized” the offense.

That triangle offense has taken some players a full year to grasp, so that is saying a lot for his basketball IQ. Still think he was worth the risk for 4 mil or under, Period. Nate is the only one on this team who can break down opposing defenses consistently, but his size limits the passes he’s able to make at times.

  • Section 40

But they lost that game. Sessions was 9 / 4 / 4 in 31 minutes (not very impressive) His plus/minus was -6. The rookie Flynn didn’t play as much time, but he had more points, the same number of assists, 2 less rebound, a better +/- (still negative) and a better field goal percentage.

I know they are only stats and I did not watch the game, but those numbers aren’t impressive. They also lost yesterday. Sorry, buy I just don’t believe we missed out on the golden child here.

    I know, it’s still early

Oh and I like Rudy, but like traps9 said, he’s another 3!!

Wilson in my opinion is a 3 (he can guard some 2′s and 4′s but more of a natural 3)

Galinari is a 3 (he can play some 4 if he gets stronger, to slow to play or defend 2′s)

Lebron (isn’t here, but because he mentioned him) he could play 2/3 and some point forward. I’d love to have him at the 2 so he could concentrate on scoring. Same with McGrady he can play the 2 also.

    Lee is a 4. Period.

Hill is a 4. Period. (he could become a 5 if he fills out significantly)

Harrington is a 3 (he doesn’t rebound well enough to be a 4) I personally believe he can play a little 2 in order to cause some mismatches.

Too many 3/4′s, Donnie you listening?

  • traps9

Right; only bringing LBJ, JJ, and T-Mac up because the team right now isn’t what talking about Gay is about… Gallo’s your 3. JJ, T-Mac, LBJ, etc. can be your 2… You don’t have room for a $10M per backup 3 (NO way he’ll come close to the $13 he wanted, IMO); that’d be insane. Donnie’s not THAT old

Glad he’s in the pot for ’10 like the rest of you guys, though.

  • KnickFaninMD

Ok, too many 3/4s. Donnie is listening. What is your plan?

  • CircleLimit4

Why keep bringing Sessions up? Are you trying to convince yourself Sessions would be the difference maker on this team? Lionel Hollins said some nice stuff to say about Marcus Williams, who has been more productive per 48 mins and cheaper than Sessions. i guess we should have gotten him too.

  • traps9

Hi, Donnie! Glad you’re listening. While you’re waiting for his response, please trade Jeffries for Etan Thomas or a similar expiring, please. It’d really help out. ;)

  • jcmoney

You guys dont understand something: This system is made for guys like Gay, Chandler, and Gallo who can play the 2,3, or 4 at times. Gay may be a 3, but he can slash and shoot like a 2.

The kid is 23, he’s still developing into his body and skill set. The guy is definitely a ball player, and would definitely be an asset to this team.

This style off offense is the type of team that could roll out 4 SG/SF and a point guard or center and be fine. Thats the advantage of running a team like this, you can put out lineups that other teams just cant match. Thats why Boris Diaw was such a huge part of the Suns – he could guard PFs but play like a guard and also post up. Marion was a SF swingman who became a PF on that team.

Im sure Gay will get traded re-signed and this whole thing is moot but how can anyone sit here and say they wouldn’t want this guy on your team? 6’8 hit the three, post up, play D.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

i never liked him at uconn but he came to the nba an made himself a good player
