Fans: Don’t Allow Marbury to be the Voice of NY
By Tommy Dee - Nov 4, 2009 8:01 am

I will be brief on this because I think mentioning anything just allows Steph more face time and that’s just annoying. But the comments need to be addressed.

“…They don’t play no defense,” Marbury told The Post yesterday (Monday). “The coaching is horrible. Horrendous. They need a new coach, and I’m speaking as a fan and New Yorker. They say good coaches get the most out of players and win games. I don’t see it. Mike needs to coach a team with three All-Stars.”

Team president Donnie Walsh hired D’Antoni over Jackson in 2008. Jackson, working as an ESPN commentator, will be at the Garden Friday when the Knicks host LeBron James‘ Cavs.

“They should give the job to Mark Jackson,” said Marbury, who is family friends with the Jacksons. “Why couldn’t he get that job? Fresh blood, St. John’s alumni. He would’ve coached defense. Even Herb Williams would’ve.

“I’m tired of hearing LeBron James may come and be the savior. What about fans who come out, see the game now and pay money to see the games? If he don’t come, then what?”

Defense? Defense? Who the hell did Steph ever guard? He got under every screen and never got after it defensively. In fact, his idea of defense was to push the ball and attack the player who scored on him. Kinda sounds like D’Antoni’s system, no?  Marbury giving an opinion on defense is like listening to Jimmy Rollins wax poetic about getting hits in the World Series.

And for the record, is there any coach that Steph ever liked playing for? He could play for Lenny Wilkins for crying out loud and he ended  up hating Isiah, who he once claimed was his “mentor.”

Oh yeah, and Larry Brown questioned his “manhood” whatever that means.

Please Knick fans don yourselves a favor and don’t allow for Marbury to “speak” for the fans of New York.

This is my issue with Berman, he keeps raking the coals with Marbury and giving him the outlet. Can’t he just go play overseas?

What happened to that?

You cannot be a true Knicks fan and side with Stephon Marbury. This turd was the biggest embarrassment in team history.

Talk about killing the messenger. I have no more love for Marbury whatsoever but everything he said is true except the part about hiring Mark Jackson over D’Antoni.

D’Antoni needs to adjust his system to the roster. You have a team of slashers and mid range jump shooters and you have them taking 500 3s a game. You don’t have to scrap your system entirely but just tweak it to allow more isolations and pick and rolls from the sides and corners rather than the top of the key.

Duhon stinks. There is no reason he should be the focul point of the offense. This team has no talent, it should be defense first offense second. Be like Mike Fratello’s Cavs.

And Curry is a much bigger embarrasment ot the organization then Marbury ever was.

Mike Fratello’s Cavs??? If the team is going to be mediocre and barely win 40 games, I’d rather have fun watching them.

you change your system to suit your players IF these players are here long term.

When you have one year rentals, whats the point of changing your offense every year ?

this year can be practice for those who willbe sticking around long term

don’t just kill the messenger, slaughter his ass…

I’m usually not one for ad hominem attacks but the mere fact that that opinion came out of his mouth, should severly discredit it’s validity on it’s face.

Actually Tommy, I remember Stephon becoming a very good defender, I believe it was the year before all of his problems. The Knicks even put him on Kobe and did a respectable job. It seeemed like his offense suffered but he definitely became a better than average defender once he put his mind to it. Obviously he didn’t do that throughout his entire career, but he does have a point about this team. I would like to see him go away as much as anybody, but his words ring true,

If you didn’t tell me it were Marbury saying that (and you added a lot of CAPS) I would have thought that was Bob speaking LOL (aside from the Jackson endorsement maybe).

My point about it sounding like Bob is he does “speak for” a lot of fans, his opinion is shared by many. That said it is only one view, some fans worship the ground _’antoni walks on and would sprinkle rose petals in front of his feet wherever he goes (Tommy?).

No shots.

Agree 100%. Marbury is only stating the obvious. The Knicks are still a bad defensive team. I for one, feel Mark Jackson should have been named the coach and feel he still will be as soon as no ‘D’ Antoni is run outta town. With ‘no draft’ common sense Walsh right behind him. Anyone notice what Jennings is doing in Milwaukee?

Comment by Eduardo15
2009-11-04 09:28:50

Agreed. And Stephon was the one saying, right before the season started, that this scheme of chucking 3 after 3 would lead to nowhere.

So yes, he’s a mental case and he’s annoying, but as for as his analysis on the current Knicks, I don’t have any problem with it.

“Anyone notice what Jennings is doing in Milwaukee?”

25 pts some assists and boards last night, right?

I commented on it last night. Even if J. Hill turns out to be a good player, what was the point of taking yet another forward? If we were talking about the next Karl Malone (Griffin), ok, go for it. But Hill?

We desperately need guards on this team, but yet we don’t complete the deal that would get us the 5th pick (no one thought Rubio would slip so far, but Flinn and Curry would definitely be there) and then pass on Jennings and Lawson at 8.

So yeah, we have some 300 forwards on this squad and guess what is the position our main target next year plays?

C’mon guys! The season is 4 games old, and already we’re ready to hang D’antoni and Walsh in effigy? Marbury had his chance to improve the team. Instead, he coose not to play. I hardly see why he counts now! A fan? PLEASE! Whatever your thoughts, know that the coach and GM will be here, at least thru the season. Let’s try to give them their shot.

Lets not rehash the Marbury saga.

D’Antoni was the one who banished him to the bench for no real reason other than his past experiences with him

Most fans and people on the street dont think he represents the Knicks or Knick fans..or speaks for anyone but himself.

It pains me to say it but I have to agree with Steph.. for the most part..

I was even a supporter of bringing in Jackson. That would have been a more aggressive choice. .

Thank you Biggie, HaS & Eduardo15 ….sorry Tommy, Steph is a certifiable nutty guy but 90% of his analysis IS what knowledgable Knick fans think. HaS is absolutely on the money about Steph being a better defender during his last real playing time with the team. The basic problem is there are sour grapes with Steph but those grapes were soured by D’Antoni himself with how he handled the situation that led to Steph’s insubordination. Even DW didn’t know what the hell his coach was doing. Bottom line is we would have been better last year if the mastermind coach didn’t proceed as he did … either with a better record or possibly being able to trade a productive Steph at the deadline.

As far as the business of the here & now … If/when Brandon Jennings is named ROY, will that be enough to say passing over him was a mistake? Steve Smith was gushing over him on NBA TV saying that there will be a great rivalry between him & Derrick Rose for years … If we had gotten the #1 in ‘08 we would have taken Rose, so why not BJ3 at # 8 ??? Oh, that’s OK, we’ll go after him as a FA in 2013 !!!

That sounds to me as smart management/coaching. Both lacking in NY for what, 8 year now?

Tommy, Marbury’s a waste of time – he just loves the attention.

Mike D’Antoni’s not a perfect coach (obviously) and I can understand Marbury’s bitterness, but he’s still better than Mark Jackson, period. Because Jackson represents the Knicks doesn’t mean that he would have been a good choice. As a matter of fact he has no experience whatsoever and he’s not even a good commentator. “Hands down man down” Wtf…

And I couldn’t care less whether Marbury’s wrong or right, you and I know what his intention is.

_’antoni definitely has more head coaching experience than Jackson, which by all accounts would make him the better coach, right? But, how does a coach work the bench a whole year and not emphasize defense (which he has admitted himself to have done last year)? I’m sure Mark Jackson wouldn’t have made THAT mistake. Also, Jackson has more NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION experience than _’antoni, essentially as a coach on the floor and one of the best point guards to ever play the game (I wish the Knicks would have let him and Ewing develop together).

Jackson wasn’t my 1st choice, but I would have rolled the dic with him and I for one think it’s about time to bring some former players back here to help continue the legacy. Charles Oakley and Patrick Ewing have both expresses an interest in coming home and they can’t even get an interview? That baffles my mind. If the Knicks were a 60 win team then I could understand, they obviously don’t need them, but this organization has been in a tail spin for 10 years. Maybe they’d be worth a try or at least an interview for Santa Claus’ sake.

Comment by BiggieSmalls
2009-11-04 13:29:35

I would have gone after Avery Johnson for the job.

Maybe offered Jackson a staff position. Herb Williams would be moved to the the front office and I would have gone out of my way to bring Ewing back as a coach/special assistant. And/or given Oakley a job on teh coaching staff.

II would offer PJ Carlisimo a front office spot.,

And I would not have allowed the coach to fire the whole advance scouting staff with the reasoning that he can do it himself.

I dont think superstar players care about whether they play for a “players coach” cause lets face it.. if its Lebron every coach is a “player’s coach”. I want someone who can deal with the Xs and Os and get us to the finals.

This organization — while they sometimes talk a good game — doesnt have a real tie into its past. That Phil Jackson had a hall of fame coaching career in a town other than NY pains me. Anyone who points to Alan Houston as a link to our past is either 20 years old or doesnt pay attention to the real history of this organization.

Exactly Big. Exactly.

That ceremony they had last year was ironic. Players from each decade or whatever nonsense that was. Give me a break.

Oak could be here teaching these bigs a million things about defense in the NBA. He could take potential bust/potential Amar’e, Jordan Hill under his wing, teach him how to help when his teammates get beaten, how to show and get back, where he should be on the floor etc.

I don’t know if it was Ewing or not, but Yao got better when he was in Houston and D. Howard has gotten better since he’s been in Orlando.

Sidebar: I liked how Aguirre worked with the bigs when he was here, I bet he could work wonders with Hill. Instead of collecting DNP-CD’s for a coach that would rather have no bigs and has a distaste for post offense.

I agree with keeping him off blogs etc., but “The Celts did not want him back because he played no D or O, and no other team will sign him because he is useless and a wacko.” is simply not true. They did want him back, they even offered him a contract, however meager (1 mil per? Don’t remember the exact figure), Stephon chose to turn it down, I assume because he felt he should make more.

Doc even actually raved about him while he was there.

Comment by Dave the Rave
2009-11-04 17:40:29

The minimal contract offer was a token. If they really wanted him back they would have made a much bigger offer, like the Knix did with Lee. Did Doc plead with Ainge to raise the offer when SM turned it down?

Doc and all GMs and coaches say positive things about lots of people, usually because they want to prop up the poor guy’s image out of respect or they want the bums to have trade value, like with E Curry who the Knix brass won’t trash because they want some sucker to take him. Ya think DW or D’A are really optimistic EC will help the Knix. I don’t think so.

Read between the lines — SM sucked, iis too slow and is not considered by any team to be of any value. Every time he opens his mouth it cements his image as a nutball, and his performance with the Celts shows he’s got nothing left. Rondo outshone him. SM is delusional thinking he will come back next year….maybe in Italy or Bolivia, but not the NBA.

Comment by HaS
2009-11-04 17:51:19

Lee is 26 Marbury is on the wrong side of 30 and his trade value couldn’t be lower. Why would he say anything to prop up his value when he was headed for unrestricted free agency, that statement made no sense and Curry and _avi_ is a bad analogy.

He definitely looked done, but remember the guy hadn’t played basketball in months! He looked pretty good in training camp and preseason last year. I doubt he’ll be back in the league next year either.

Comment by Dave the Rave
2009-11-04 19:44:23

Doc does not trash players who no longer have it – that’s common decency.

I was not making an analogy.

“Pretty good” is not good enough for a nutball. He was rejected by D’A. His value was $1M to the Celts and he was insulted, and no other team wanted him for any $.

I don’t think it was racist, I think _’antoni is just a stubborn coach who held a grudge and wasn’t about to give Marbury the “clean slate” he mentioned in several interviews. He strikes me as the type to “Cut off his nose to spite his face.” Mike is epically stubborn.
