Kahn Ready to Deal?

By Tommy Dee on Nov 11, 2009, 1:05 pm

Via the Pioneer Press:

“…We know we have a young team with a new coaching staff and a new culture, but we don’t want to overly rely on those things as crutches,” he said. “At some point, we need to stop talking about those things. We’re all accountable, myself especially.”

Kahn made numerous moves in the offseason, sparing only five players from last season’s roster. Before the season, he consistently maintained that the team would struggle. He asked for patience from fans and projected a “two- to three-year plan” for turning the team around.

Monday’s performance, however, challenged Kahn to remain positive.

“It’s much too early to paint everything with a bad brush,” he said. “When things clicked, we’ve had some very bright moments. There have also been some moments that were abysmal, but that’s part of who we are as a team…”

I could see something brewing here, and I’m not just talking about Rubio. Cardinal is a valuable expiring, maybe if Walsh added Chandler with Jeffries, we can get Cardinal, Oleksiy Pecherov and Minnesota’s lottery protected 1st rounder from the Ty Lawson deal? Minnesota also has Utah’s top 17 protected…

Hmmm…

IMO Kahn is in way over his head. Hopefully he will admit that he tried and failed in outsmarting the other Gm’s on draft night and in turn he outsmarted himself by drafting both Rubio and Flynn. Now if there is a way to clear more space albeit nothing on the level of Curry and Jeffries space then do it. It’s obvious we are not going anywhere anytime soon.

Right now I don’t think the Knicks have the right assets to trade for Rubio. But I do believe that Kahn will try to trade Sessions to us once we’re done with free agency next summer. I just don’t think that it’s going to work playing Flynn & Sessions at the same time.

I believe the pick Tommy referenced was the one Minn got from Denver when they traded them the rights to Ty Lawson…

If that is the case does anyone really believe the Nuggets will fall to the lottery?

How about Chandler and Curry for Sessions and Cardinal? You’re getting back a longer term deal but still shaving off 8 million.

Or if you want to be more realistic:

Curry and Chandler for Cardinal and Wilkins

I honestly think I would do both. But god help THAT New York Knicks team if this one can’t perform.

I think if there’s any chance we swing a 1st rounder and get rid of JJ in one shot its a god send (not to say that JJ is a bad player).

Next years draft is projected to be stacked and especially if we can somehow pry their 1st rounder (of course in a non lottery protected format) then I would build a shrine and worship DW from now until we win our next championship!

My mistake after some research Minn 2010 first rounder belongs to the clippers from a deal in 2005 which is Top 10 protected in 2010 and 2011, and unprotected in 2012… Wack!

But they do still have that first rounder from Utah and another from Charlotte.

If walsh moves chandler with jj then he made a HUGE mistake by not pulling off the deal last year with the kings, if that was truly an option for donnie. I wouldn’t trade wilson right now. i think he will continue to improve, remember he is coming off of ankle surgery. i like wilson a lot, he goes about playing the game the right way. i am reluctant to trade him right now… at the deadline if thats the only way that we can trade jj and or curry then im all for it.

I think the only way Jeffries goes in a small deal is with Chandler. What was the deal last year you’re talking about with SAC? (thought I remember hearing one rumor was bunk)

Got back here late, but I agree with you. Personally, I would’ve pulled that trigger (of course, I’ve never run a NBA team lol), but here’s to hoping DW’s got a big trick up his sleeve for December

There is never any talk of trades (or drafts) to improve the team at all. Just cut salary. I really hope they get LeBron, because if not it has not been worth being a fan the past 2 seasons.

agreed. but donnie is trying to make us a contender. he can easily make us a team stuck in medicority, like the 76ers. he is trying to give us a chance to land two max fa…. we have sucked since 2001, we can suck for 1 more year to have the chance to compete for a title.

          Nov 11, 2009, 3:58 pm at 3:58 pm #

That’s the thing there aren’t 2 max free agents beyond Wade and LeBron that turn the Knicks automatically into a team competing for a title.

Now we are talking. I like Chandler and it would hurt but I would much rather have the cap space and a shot at signing 2 studs. Getting a 1st rounder in the process from Minny would be great. They are stacked with picks. Good stuff Tommy Dee.

Brian Cardinal! Ye olde Boilermaker! Many a night he tortured my hapless Wolverines. Now there’s a guy who managed to stay in the NBA for over a decade on pure guts. No I don’t think he can help us but if our scrap heap had an OUNCE of the fight that guy has we’d actually be competitive.

Regarding trades…realistically anything that can free up more space for 2 max free agents is a gift. No one is untouchable, save my little italian rooster.

    Nov 11, 2009, 2:41 pm at 2:41 pm #

I don’t know if the #’s work but if they do….Chandler and Jeffries for Cardinal and that Utah top 17 protected pick the Wolves have is the trade that I would rather see happen. However, I think the only way Walsh trades Chandler to Minny is if Rubio is included. Even though RR can’t come until the year after next….it would make watching our current pg’s more tolerable.

This thread is depressing. This past offseason I was thinking that the Knicks should bring in a big time player in an effort to lessen the import of the upcoming FA season and otherwise make the franchise a more enticing destination for Lebron. I was in favor of bringing in Boozer or one of the other names that I were being thrown about on this site, but by far my biggest hope was for the Knicks to acquire Ricky Rubio and for him to play this year and show promise. But now even Rubio doesnt make sense since he will be an unproven commodity going into next season.

Thus my depression as it relates to the topic of a potential trade with the Wolves.

    Sorry.

Tommy’s trade would leave us $34,678,057 off the books with Curry, $45,954,920 without him (if we only receive expirings in return). $34.6M is a REALLY decent number; I’m surprised at that, but it makes sense with Chandler’s ’10 numbers at over $2M. If we got rid of JJ and Curry, and it took Wil, I’m completely down for that. It’s just gotta happen, IMO

Shouldn’t we hold up on this trade speculation until Chandler and Jeffries and Curry are looking good and the Knicks are playing some winning basketball? Maybe we can get something for one or more of these players? Just a thought. I don’t think Cardinal, Pecherov and whoever are going to help the Knicks this season.

I can’t wait to trade JJ so hill can play.

    This season:
    18 minutes (total)
    13 points
    6 rebounds
    3 steels
    1 block

it’s a tiny sample size but damnit just play him already.

I Agree Jeff its a small sample of what J.Hill can do I can’t wait to see him get minutes and play. I think he’s gonna be a good player he’s athletic, and a shotblocker plus a good scorer. Give us a reason besides T.doug and Gallo to watch this team.

On a slightly unrelated (slightly as this thread is specific to trades with Minn) I was looking at the ESPN Trade Machine and if we could somehow swing JJ for Mike James and Nick Young, I’m thinkin that would pretty solid as well get JJ off the cap and give us some much needed players at the 1 and 2…

Take a look at the numbers here

That said I haven’t really seen too much of Young anyone care to give some insight.

You still care about Rubio who probably isn’t even thinking about us and after Doug played his heart out for us so far? Wow! Incredible.

People who’d rather see their team fail so they can be right are fans of their opinions not their team. As Biggie has said before DW needs to be on the horn examining every option to better this team via trade and lose all the pieces that are not expected to be here next year for whatever reason(D.Lee insane salary request, N.Robinson Outta Control, W.Chandler doesnt have a clue, JJ bonafide bum, EC certified slacker). I hope that EC comes in rejuvinated and ressurects his decrepid career for my beloved Knicks sake. Eight games into the season and mostly losses however brief glimpses of hope like TD and Gallinari(when hes not in chuck mode) keep me hopeful that DW might pull a magical rabbbit outta his hat. Aint he from the city(BX). Hes gotta have a little hustle left in em.

    Bad trade

    plain and simple

We could have traded Wilson for the 5 pick (Ricky Rubio) in the offseason and now were gonna move him for Brian Cardinal??? If JJ could string a few good games together we could move him for Cardinal straight up. If Walsh is gonna trade Chandler he better get back Rubio.

Looking at free agents is what we are left with,Chandler and Duhon have disappointed JJ is a perienail bad player.I love any trade at this point that gets us closer to Lebron and the promise land but who ‘s coming and who’s going.I like Gallo.D.Lee and Hill and Douglas right now and everyone else can be moved to free cap space,I would keep N8.N8 has heart and this team needs that.I like N8 and Douglas starting with Gallo ,DLee and Hill playing,Bob is right Minny is in the lotto every year.I won’t do that trade yet because Chandler can get you more than cap space and Eddie might supprise and show value to some chump GM .JJ for Cardinal works for me and on real GM,maybe Kahn can throw Donnie a bone.
