Wade: Lebron and I Playing together is a Longshot

by Tommy Dee on November 12th, 2009 at 4:45 pm

Via Miami Herald-

“…Dwyane Wade doubts that he’ll be teammates with LeBron James, but acknowledged on Wednesday that such a pairing isn’t impossible.

“It’s something we’ve talked about, of course,” Wade said. “No question, it’s a long shot. He’s put in position in Cleveland where he has the opportunity to compete for a championship now. I’m in Miami, where I’ve won a championship and this is where I love to be. So it’s not like we’re both looking over our shoulders saying we want to get out of here. So it’s a long shot. But at the end of the day, it is a shot.”

The Cavaliers will travel to Miami to play the Heat on Thursday night in a highly-anticipated game.

“Me and D-Wade have been friends for seven or eight years and have talked about a lot of things. [Playing together] may have come up in a conversation. … It doesn’t come up all the time,” James said…”

As I’ve repeatedly said, the idea of them playing together, as cool as they think it may be, isn’t happening.

Nor is the idea that Lebron will end up is Chicago. Really? Why would he chase Jordan? It’s the same rational of him playing with Wade and being a ring behind.

Lebron is his own man and good for him for focusing on a the task at hand. July is a ways away.

On the same note, I’ve noticed countless fans over the past few days calling WFAN and talking about the idea of why Lebron would want to come to a “losing” team.

I’ve had enough and find myself yelling at the radio.

Please stop calling and bitching about the Knicks in terms of next year. And if you know someone who waits to talk to the FAN  to talk about how Lebron won’t come to a crappy team, tell them to stop wasting their time. It means nothing.

Without question, I believe Lebron knows that if he comes here the talent WILL FOLLOW HIM. So if you look at this group and focus on wins and losses, you are missing the point completely.

So look at it this way. If the Cavs lose, and they have no where else to turn in terms of upgrading, Lebron will look to leave. If he signs with the Knicks early in July, imagine the talent that will follow him. Seriously, imagine it.

It’s why no one has signed with him in Cleveland. Where he decides to build, they will come.

So please, PLEASE stop talking about this year in terms of roster and talent from the Knicks standpoint as your argument for why Lebron won’t come.

It means nothing in the grand scheme.

Big picture people, big picture.

Tommy, I here you and sincerely hope you’re right. Im not gonna lie, I’ve been one of those fans that have said that, but in reality its just being said so we don’t feel broken hearted when or if he doesn’t come. Its like a kid who’s never met his father and has been told countless times he’s gonna see his father, but he thinks negatively so he doesn’t feel hurt when it doesn’t happen.

Softening the blow, so to speak!

  • traps9

How could LeBron even think lack of talent is a dealbreaker when the Knicks will have only 3-6 players on the roster to start the sweepstakes?

    Good post, TD

  • DanL

Wholeheartedly agree. This team now is a sorry team indeed but most of the guys wont be here next year. Lee, Nate, Hughes, Harrington, Darko, Duhon, maybe if we’re lucky Jeffries and Curry will ALL be gone.

LeBron isn’t looking at this roster and saying, I don’t think I want to join a team with Al Harrington and Larry Hughes? Why? Because it would abysmally stupid for him to do that. THOSE GUYS WON’T BE HERE. Who will be here? LeBron + another guy in the 8-max range + potentially more the year AFTER, plus potential trades over the summer, something akin to when the Knicks signed Childs and Houston and traded someone already on their team for LJ. The roster has the potential to be dramatically different this summer, and not just through signings.

Analogy: why would KG (who initially balked at joining the Celtics) join the 24 win Celtics? Because they just added Ray Allen to the mix, that’s why.

  • Mucha

I think Wade and James will never have the opportunity to play together in the NBA, the euphoria from the Olympics is long gone.

LeBron will sign either with the Knicks or the Cavaliers in my opinion.

I can’t see him signing with the Bulls (Jordan’s shadow), the Heat (Wade’s presence) nor the New Jersey/Brooklyn Nets (not classy enough – the jerseys/arena/history suck).

  • itzyung1

Good Point Danl. Plus the Knicks have 2 2nd round draft picks next year in a very deep draft. Not saying that those two are starters but they could be good Role Players.

  • Jeff Cykiert

    Tommy,

I do agree with the concept that the talent will follow. Our W-L production this year is completely irrelavent.

One of your theories that I completely disagree with, though, is the “one ring behind theory.” LeBron wants to win. You think he would turn down playing with wade, because wade will always be one ring ahead of him? You give him a lot of credit for being mature and ‘being his own man,’ but in this theory you paint a picture of him that resembles an immature middle school jack-ass.

No matter which other superstar he plays with, he will still be a superstar, and he will still be Lebron, and he wants to win; that’s it.

  • traps9

They’re also a cheap way to fill out a roster with 2 big FA contracts on it. (We can only hope.)

  • ScottD

Your “traded someone already on their team” comment reminded me of Anthony Mason.
I can’t believe that was 13 years ago!

  • Knicks4life

No disrespect but I don’t understand this post. How will the talent follow if we sign Lebron to a max contract but don’t move Jeffries and Curry, renounce our rights to Lee and Nate, let Harrington, Hughes and Duhon (yeah he stinks but that is another position we have to sign someone to fill) walk and we don’t have a #1 pick. Where is the money coming from to sign this “talent” you speak of. Do you mean the talent is coming in 2011?

Also can you name one superstar free agent in the past ten years other than Steve Nash who left a winning team to sign as a free agent with a terrible team. Technically Joe Johnson was a sign and trade and he was far from a superstar. It just doesn’t happen so I can see fans saying that the Knicks have to be competitive to land a superstar.

If this team goes 10-72 will the lure of playing in NY be enough to attract a free agent. LBJ and Wade have already publicly criticized our “system”. I personally think your outrage may be misplaced.

  • Knicks4life

And as far as LBJ chasing Jordan, Kobe is doing pretty well playing in Magic’s city. KG doesn’t seem to be having a problem in Bird country. In New York LBJ might arguably not even be the biggest sports star in New York. Until the Knicks start winning multiple championships they are going to continue to be second fiddle to the Yankees and Giants.

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

Dude, I loved your take on Gallo, not being the most atheltic, still taking it strong to the rim.

All these fans worried about his back, his back…oh no!

    after seeing that, what back?

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

    jeff

aside from my “one less” theory, I love bron’s knowledge of the history of the game.

Magic didn’t play with bird, isiah didn’t join either.

Each player had their own identity, which is why i don’t see miami as a destination.

    bank on it.

  • traps9

Chandler, Gallinari, Douglas, Hill = $9,175,561
    Curry, Jeffries = $18,160,263

    2010 Cap (Est.) = $53,000,000
    2010 Total = $27,335,824

    2010 Space = $25,664,176

Curry and Jeffries are the issue. A Jeffries/Chandler combo saves $9M; Curry is $11.3M on his own. If Donnie can pull off that magic one more time, we’ve got a good shot at LBJ at $17-18M and another (Bosh?) at $12-13M. I use Bosh just because I think he’d take it to play with LBJ and in NY.

  • HaS

Isn’t just as much a “[waste of] their time” to say that he is coming and point to every little thing he does and says (and wears) as a sign that he’s coming to the Knicks next summer?

    “It means nothing”.

I’ll stop “talking about the idea of why Lebron would want to come to a “losing” team.” when you all stop talking as if he’s signed already.

  • Knicks4life

Right I’ve seen this math before but then we have Gallo, Hill, Douglas, Bosh, and LBJ. Four forwards, a combo gaurd, no center, no midlevel exception, no first round draft pick and no cap space for the foreeable future. So we fill the other 12 spots with minimum level salary players? How is that attractive to LBJ?

  • traps9

No cap space? If you clear out both Curry and JJ and sign LBJ and Bosh to those numbers, as you did, you still have almost $15M left…

  • traps9

The problem is signing two “maxes” when you don’t move BOTH players.

  • Knicks4life

Two maxes ($18M) would be 36M. The cap is projected to fall to as low as 50M. Hill, Gallo, and Douglas = approx $7mil. Your multiple second round picks probably add up to $1.5 mil. That leavs $5.5 mil to fill five roster spots (for a twelve man roster). If we sign one player to the $5.5 mil everyone else on the team is signing for the minimum.

Even if we use your $53 mil figure that is only $8.5 mil to fill five roster spots. No cap space of any significance in 2011 and I’m assuming we are making the playoffs so a non lottery pick in 2011.

Not saying it is impossible, I just don’t understand the math. Bosh signing for $12 mil is a pipe dream. Joe Johnson wouldn’t even sign for that.

  • danny

Hard to imagine Lebron leaving Cleveland without a ring- if he does, he will forever have the astricks of “Yeah but he couldn’t win with the Cavs”…Jordan, who Lebron wants to be compared to, took his team that drafted him to 6 Championships. He didn’t play for a team then bolt to try somewhere else. Leaving without a ring will forever follow Lebron.

  • DanL

yup, it was anthony mason…in the current situation im thinking maybe wilson chandler if he can step his game up a little to increase his value.

  • Eduardo15

Of course me and everyone else in here wants the best for the Knicks. I would be thrilled if LBJ lands in NY next year, would love for Gallinari to turn into a star, TD to be the point guard of the future, Mike to coach them to titles, etc..

BUT, considering how bad things have been for us for 5345353 seasons, I don’t think the right attitude is to be condescending towards the current Knicks and even its plans for the future. I think we have all the right in the world to be demanding more and more from everyone related to Knicks basketball. I just don’t share this perspective of looking for positives in everything.

In other words, I agree with HaS stand on the subject.

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

i’m more concerned with people so sure “why he won’t” then “why he will”

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

Right, but what i’ve asked numerous times is what will the cavs do after this year to add the 1A….

    what;s your take?

  • HaS

I’m not sure “he won’t”, just not convinced “he will”.

I’ll believe it when the ink is dry on the papyrus.

  • Eduardo15

I know you’re talking to HaS, not me, but I for one, am not in either camp.

I’m in the camp that thinks that “hey we’ve been losing for so long and this team is so bad, so it sucks for us to be at the beginning of yet another season and to have no winning perspective whatsoever this year”. It is also frustrating to see CD starting at the 1, JH not playing while BJ is lighting up.

Next year, we’ll see. That’s my perspective on things.

  • jho

I still think the Knicks should try to to trade Eddy Curry to the Warriors for Stephen Curry & Devean George. This will save close to 3 mil on next year’s cap, and will allow the Warriors to get out of the Jackson extension 2 years earlier. I think we saw from last year right now in this economy players with bad extensions are difficult to trade. I don’t see teams valuing Jackson as high as Carter or Jefferson, he could be really hard to move. If Curry shows newfound dedication, he could be the big body that GS could use against other squads.

After that all we need to do is package Jeffries with Lee or Chandler, and that will be a lot easier than packaging Curry away for an expiring. With this we can have enough for close to 2 max stars, and I believe Jackson can flourish in our system.

  • jho

LOL I made a mistake that last post, I meant ***Stephen Jackson***, not Stephen Curry, though I’d love to have Curry here.

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

Word…you have to be leaning one way or the other no?

  • HaS

I’m a New Yorker, born here raised here, we’re suspicious by nature. Seeing is believing, right now I’d say I was leaning toward no, but hey I could be wrong.

If the Knicks had the Nets roster, cap situation and draft pick I would say he was definitely coming, to go along with the opportunity to recruit a superstar/all-star teammate of his choice.

That would be hard to turn down.

However, to make the move to a terrible team, horrible record, questionable draft pick and with so many holes, 1,2 and 5 it’s hard to see. Anything is possible I guess, but I won’t get my hopes up just to have them crushed in July.

I could see him opting in for his last year and giving Cleveland another chance to add another body, by trade or signing.

  • Jeff Cykiert

I don’t see miami as a destination either, but does your theory apply to playing with wade here?

  • josh h

guys the knicks suck. we will not get a superstar to play for us. who wants to play with a team that gets eaten alive by shit teams in the east?? we beat a falling apart NO Hornet team, but we cant be the Bucks? or the Bobcats? How are we front runners for any superstar? No amount of money will make a good player want to tank his career and play here.

on the real though, i would much rather have gotten terrence williams than hill on draft day.

  • Bob

if they promise lebron talent ,and he signs with the knicks, how will we be able to afford more talent, and i mean lebrons idea of talent?(and i am one who thinks NO WAY IS HE COMMING HERE”)

  • Bob

hey guys! would you like some more KOOL-AID ?(TommyDee just made a new batch)

  • Bob

oh dont worry, tommy dee will figure it out lol.So the guys at wfan are wrong when they say lebrons not comming, but you are right, when you say he is……

  • Bob

i also am starting to believe that the coach is overated by most

  • Bob

yeh,Donnie Walsh promised us fans that we would be competetive, and then he drafted Hill, and wouldnt sign a good point guard, what makes you think he will keep a promise to lebron.do you think lebron is gonna sign here because Walsh promised him he would get better players? no way…..better players first, then i sign

  • Bob

    Joe Johnson

  • Sergio

Will never happen. You can’t have 2 alpha males on the team. But if LeBron James ever signed with Miami to play with Dwyane Wade, I think I’d boycott the NBA. I couldn’t deal watching the Heat win 8 rings while Joe Johnson leads us to 38 wins every year.

  • knicks613

    hey,

did you see how many empty seats in miami last night?
it was announced as a sell out.
    one thing for certain.
lebron and dwayne KNOW that msg would be full for their show!
and dwade pounding av into the turnbuckle!!
and then saying “that’s what i #^&*%@ do”
    priceless ko.
    to a 25% empty arena!

that has to weigh on them a bit.
that’s why they say msg is the mecca!!!

build it and they will come to msg
