Andrew Smith and I were talking last night and we realized that Nash’s ability to create “back cut” back door assists is a key component to the offense. I mention that later in the video. Early on, I mention Al Harrington with Gallo and Will, just as a point of reference. It will be interesting to see if D’Antoni settles and plays Curry in the post with Lee at the 4, but I doubt it.

Finger point, as always, to bigapplechannel.

Very much like the breakdown, TD.. Didn’t know you’re scouting this year, btw, congrats on that
Very well done.
Things must have hit rock bottom if you have to go to the chalkboard, Tommy. LOL.
nice display of the knicks offense- the thing is that what happens when that play doesnt work- they just move the ball around until they find the open man or until it lands in the hands of harrington and motion is over.
we all wanna see why our defense is so bad- howcome its been almost 2 yeas now that donnie and mike have not realized that david lee is just not physically cut out to play as a center and howcome we never heard of david complaining about his position??????
Its not that Lee is playing out of position as much as he just can’t guard anybody. He got abused by power forwards in the previous games not centers. And as a sense of pride Lee won’t say a word. How would that look complaining that you can’t stop a Center when as Knick fans know we had Oak and Mason who told Ewing to go somewhere I will guard Hakeem. That takes a big set to step up to that challenge. And they were shorter if I am correct compared to Lee.
some of it is pride but i think lately its more of a contract based thing!! heres a guy who was requestin 10-12 million- hes obviously not worth that much- for a player to receive that much he has to be able to change the game around with just his presence!! david lee doesn not do that!!!
Great job with the chalkboard Tommy. You just illustrated what would be a problem with Curry back playing the 5 quite possibly with Lee. And I am glad that you admit that we really don’t have anybody beside Tony D, Nate and sometimes Harrington that can break their man off the dribble. Another problem that we have as a team among other problems.
Great job Tommy. This is definitely a niche where you can separate yourself from other Knicks bloggers.
Love the content T, right on! Totally separates you from the mediots that just write in cliches.
I’d use a bigger whiteboard, one with a permanent arc, paint, blocks, etc. and go with 2 fixed cameras (1 for board closeup, the other to show you and the board); 1 camera is too jumpy, thought it was too “Blair Witch”.
You should get access to a telestrator to pick apart good plays and bad ones, too!
My man Crag-
Good to hear from you and thanks for the feedback.
MSG doesn’t let us use their feed, hence why SNY uses alot of photos on SportsNite.
is what it is.
thanks and hope all is well my brotha.
TD
and by the way, I don’t think it’s cheesy but figured some would knock the low budget feel.
I really dig it myself.
I watch a lot of TV and it’s yelling and screaming…
aka annoying babble.
i believe this gives more substance.
keep the comments coming!!
i think its a lot better from an insider and also a true Knick fan like you that we trust to be explaining to us whats going on with the Knicks. I dont know about others but it feels like Donnie has been underachieving since he got here and we really do not know what hes up to due to his lack of acitivites other than getting ready for 2010!!
Donnie won’t sit back and do nothing. He’ll work the phones, but remember.
Lee and nate can veto
And he can’t take a contract back past 2010 unless it’s a player that fits into the mold of being available then.
he’s in a tough spot but i can’t see him standing pat. if the right deal comes along that fits under those parameters, then he will do it.
they still have to have fans come to games, and if it goes much more like this the place will be desolate after the holidays…
You know something Tommy I did not know that Nate and Lee can veto any trade. Which goes to my point why sign them? I mean if they fail and you want to get expiring contracts in return in a trade and they veto it you are practically stuck with them. And finally what is your opinion on the Lee Curry incident at the end of the Warriors game when Lee was jawing at Curry after he was blocked by Stephen.
Im getting tired of reading the Tommy Dee blog with spurts of Knicks information…
We get it, you go to knicks practices and have had conversations with Mike Dantoni. yaaaayyyyyyyyyyy
BOOOOoooo
lol
Haha i actually don’t blame you. I think if this was just nonstop knicks with no diversions we’d all start to cannibalize eachother.
I like Gaston…but another struggle for the rams. doesn’t help your knick plight.
Duhon and Chandler have disappointed the most, great job explaning the role of the pg in this system and why Duhon play hurts the system alot. It’s time for the youth movement to see what we got,Hill and Douglas and Landry need more burn.
Tommy,
God stuff there that, as a geezer who has done a little coaching, I appreciate it because I am an X and O guy.
You certainly show how the offense should work, but in reality . . .
As you set it up on the board, Duhon is mostly breaking to the left rather to the right, making Gallo and Chandler the weak side, and putting the key and Lee between him and Gallo and Chandler. Thus, the ball always goes outside to JJ or Harrington (where you set him up), or into Lee. Very predictable for the defenders. This makes Hughes, Harrington, or JJ the second go-to option every time if they can’t run the P and R with Lee. Given the shooting % of Al, JJ, and Hughes, it pays to double down on Lee as he rarely passes it out.
Two problems occur where you set up Gallo and Chandler on your board. Gallo always sets up, and I’m assuming this is not his choice, in the corner on the baseline with Chandler about ten feet away from him on the arc. When Gallo does get the ball and wants to make a move, as you said the baseline acts like a defender on him. So no baseline. Chandler always sets up so close that his man can easily double on Gallo. Chandler never moves far enough away for Gallo to pass to him without Chandler’s man being able to recover. Hence, a forced trey in a crowd for Gallo or Chandler. Very predictable, again.
The last two games they have tried to work out of that situation by having Chandler get the ball, and Gallo go toward Chandler for what I call a P and R, G and G option play depending whether Gallo has a shot, but the Knicks set sissy picks that my women’s team be embarrassed to set. After Gallo gets the ball, rather than rolling, Chandler stays so close to Gallo that Gallo, again, ends up double-teamed and Chandler is not rolling in a position to do anything with ball other than to be double-teamed by Gallo’s man. Very predictable again.
In both cases, they are failing to do what good teams do and what you indicated, get good spacing. Of course this is moot when Duhon consistently drives away from them to Al, Hughes or JJ’s side. We know what happens then; and even if they try, Gallo and Chandler are far away and automatically boxed out from getting offensive rebounds without crashing the boards. If they crash, their man releases and if Al or JJ miss, the break is on. Generally, Lee is the only Knick under the hoop with this set up.
A coach must adjust to his personnel. He doesn’t have the ponies right now. It is time to modify the system until he gets who he needs. If you do the same thing over and over again, expecting different results, that is the definition of . . .
Sorry to be so wordy, but I don’t have my slate.
Tommy,
If you have the opportunity, could you ask Chandler if he feels 100% physically or is he still recovering from the surgery.
Have been visiting your blog, multiple time, daily for more than a year. Great job. I like the TKB Chalkboard idea. It’s not necessary to have a lot of bells and whistles as you got your point across effectively.
In these dark days, I still find hope in the young core of Gallo, Douglas, and Hill (haven’t seen enough of Landry to form an opinion). Am starting to question Lee, Nate, and Wilson, although they certainly seemed to be more productive in previous seasons. Are they just in some type of funk? Is it the coaches not getting the most out of their players? Hmmm. Anyway, I’m a die-hard Knicks fan to the end and hope we’re at the bottom and it’s only going to get better from here…can’t get much worse.
