Recap Celts 107 Knicks 105
By Tommy Dee - Nov 22, 2009 4:24 pm

BOX SCORE

Tommy’s Notes on Twitter

For the Knicks, it was a great game, if not for a better bounce for Al Harrington, who was fantastic on both ends, the Knicks may have escaped with a late 4th quarter victory against the Celtics.

The Celtics were a bit slow, and KG and Rasheed were a relative non-factors, but down the stretch in the 4th, they don’t panic and know how to close out games.

With great games from Nate, and especially Harrington, you’d just like to see them get one like this to keep the momentum going. More.

2 things jump out here. The lack of a “go to” guy to get you a hoop when you need one. I won’t mention any names, but we could’ve had one if we weren’t terrified of the mere mention of his name.

And Mike D’Antoni again proves that Steve Nash was the real coach in Phoenix. The ‘foul to give’ breaks the momentum of the opposing team and makes them have to reset the offense. MD has no clue.

Great game. I thought we should have run a play for a 3 either at the end of the game or the OT. Even though we were home, the Celtics are the better team and by a lot. Every time you prolong the game you give the better team a better chance to win.

But I could easily be way off base because if we play good D at the end we go into a 2nd OT and have a chance.

It Was a Great Game except for the decision not to foul. Why the hell wouldn’t you Foul? It wouldve changed everything.

I agree. When you are the much worse team you want to turn it into a coin flip or close. You don’t want to go to overtime. A good three point shot is better than 35% to get you the win. OT spelled almost certain doom.

Again Mike Dan shows why he isnt a real Top Tier coach… This is exactly why he wont win a championship in the NBA he doesnt get X’s and O’s at the end of games…

Why would you not foul at the end of the game, when you have a foul to give…

Why wouldnt you take D Lee and his horrible defense self out the game, so he isnt exposed in the pick and pop play… You dont need rebounders in at that point, put your best defensive 5 out there…

Why is Duhon always in the game at the end when he cant create his own shot and is getting locked down by Rondo…

if any of you actually read the postgame recap, you would see this from david lee: “We had talked about waiting and stopping Pierce’s progress and we did that and didn’t think they would have time to throw back and still get a shot off. I am expecting Pierce to try and make a move and pull up. Good play by them and it is just unfortunate to lose a game like this. We knew we had a foul to give and we didn’t get one.

FIX THE SCORE TD!!!! 107-105 Celts
Really good effort today… Nate finally coming thru. We blew it at the FT line and Eddie Curry with that stupid flagrant. Why didn’t we foul if we had one to give?! Dantoni did the same thing last year where we didn’t foul when he had one to give which cost us the game and after the game he said he didn’t know he had one to give. Really DumToni. Totally fell apart on D in the last play. At least were competing.

D’Antoni is seriously pissing me off with his stupid coaching decision.

Why not use the foul?

Why start Duhon/Nate/Hughes in OT?

Why Didn’t Nate play more then Duhon since he was doing way better then him?

Why do you constantly give the other teams mismatches on propose?

Whats its going to take to realize DUHON NEEDS TO BE BENCHED! DAMMIT!

Comment by jaknicksfan

I have all the same questions

Comment by JustinCharles
2009-11-22 17:16:32

Nate can’t run an offense. There is a reason Duhon got so many minutes tonight, and it’s because he is the only guy on the team who can really set up an offense and make plays for his teammates. I’m not saying he’s a great player or that lately he has been playing even good, but that’s what he can do. So you have to keep him in OT, if you put Nate in at the 2, then you are forcing him to guard Ray Allen which probably wouldn’t end well.

Comment by Its The Kid
2009-11-22 17:29:40

Listen, I hear you… But I think Duhon not being an offensive presence and not being able to beat his man off the dribble… Is worse at the end of games, especially in the last minutes or seconds… You dont even have to D him… Plus his defense is just as suspect… Which is part of the reason they played Hughes on Rondo alot… At the end of regulation 2.2 secs left why not put in Nate for Duhon… Why have D Lee out there at all, he cant create his own shot… Mike Dan doesnt think about stuff like that… We are 3-10, I think its time to give Nate more responsiblity or trade him or sit him all together… Nate is by far the most talented player on the team overall, his biggest issue is maturity how will you ever know what he can be if you always limit his role… Its not like its gonna hurt us we already suck… And at worse if he puts up solid numbers you build his trade value… Duhon stinks and wont be back next year, lets move on from him… He cant even help us in a trade scenario…

Comment by choggs
2009-11-22 21:45:21

I don’t think nate will be here too next year. And we’re not trading nate away this season because he’s an expiring contract, no sense in “building his trade value”.
I agree with justin, duhon is there because he’s the only one that can run an offense. Yes, he stinks. But that just shows how bad nate is at running an offense.
As for D-Lee, let’s consider the alternatives: jordan hill – rook, darko – too cold off the bench, jeffries – see darko, eddy curry – not when you’re trying to guard the pick and pop/roll.
The foul to give was inexcusable though. Not sure if i blame the coach or the players though.

Comment by Its The Kid
2009-11-22 22:51:33

You can trade Nate with a Jeffries or Curry to give a team talent along with those contracts… You cant do that with Duhon… He is by far the worst starting pg in the league right now, and on some teams he couldnt even be a back up… Yes he can run the offense but with him running the team you’re 3-10 its not like we cant stand to lose his production… I just cant see Nate doing much worse… I guess I want to once and for all, force Nate to run the point… And let him sink or swim…

I thought they should have taken Lee out in the last offensive possession of regulation, where a made shot in 2.2 would have won the game… Lee received the ball at 3pt range where he isnt a threat… On defense in OT 4.8 to go, I take out Lee and just go small… Play Douglas, Nate, or even Gallo(who has better defensive instincts than Lee) along with Chandler, Hughes, Al, and Duhon… Chandler and Al guard the bigs, and Hughes on Paul…

At this point I think he’s not playing Robinson and Gallo at extreme crunch time because they are too vulnerable defensively and more likely to make stupid mistakes (Gallo inexperience and Nate emotions). You can’t have that kind of thing in the last few minutes and expect to win.

Of course you could argue that Harrington and Chandler are just as bad (both extremely low basketball IQs), but Harrington is the only player besides Nate that you can give the ball to and expect that he’ll create a decent shot for himself a lot of the time. The rest of them are useless in that regard. So despite his massive warts, you need Al in there. Chandler is a like a deer in a headlight, but he’s better defensively than Gallo.

The real problem is that we have a lot of mediocre players and it forces the coach to play the least mediocre in certain situations.

Comment by italian stallion
2009-11-22 17:13:05

BY the way, I agree that Duhon has been close to useless, but wasn’t that obvious last year. Even when he was playing his absolute best in the first half last year he was only giving us about an average PG performance when you adjusted it for the pace of the D’Antoni offense. That’s why some people were so hot for Sessions. He’s not great, but if you gave Sessions 36 minutes a game in this offense he’d put up WAY better stats than Duhon and still might get better.

The thing that really hurts about a loss like this is that for the long term we want one of two things to happen in every game.

1. We win

and/or

2. We get good minutes for the kids and see some positive developments.

We did neither. I really don’t care if Harrington gives us another good enough game to just barely lose again. He’s gone next year anyway (and if he’s not, that means we still suck).

That decision not to foul was retarded, as was the lack of rotation (I think Harrington) who only had to come over and that would be another overtime. Whatever, Great game they played really hard and the garden was loud. Ill take that effort every game. While Dantoni’s rotation is retarded, his playcalling continues to be even worse. Need a basket? Lets give the ball to Wilson Chandler in an iso so he can get stuffed by pierce. Speaking of, how much has Wilson Chandler regressed? He is terrible, he has no offensive skill or shot, cant dribble, and is just a liability. he did play great D on Pierce though which is why he was in. Sick dunk by Gallo, He needs to play a lot more and he can’t stand in the corner for as much time. Hughes is a joke, he alternates every good game with a real stinker. Oh, and I love how they are developing all the young guys, just a ton of playing time for everyone??? And finally, does it come as any surprise to anyone that arguably the Knicks best effort of the season comes when JJ isn’t in. That is the worst rotation player in the league right there.

In fairness to Wilson, his entire game last year was predicated on athleticism because 90% of the time he has no idea what he’s doing (yet?). He’s coming off surgery and I “think” he may have lost a step or two. I think in a few more weeks we’ll have a better idea of what’s going on with him. He clearly has been WAY better in November than he was in pre season and the first few games when he was bombing away 3s and other poor shots from everywhere. For the first time EVER since he’s a Knick, his shot selection is improving.

The Knicks played pretty hard up until that last blown play and Curry’s bonehead flagrant foul didn’t help our cause either…

Still, watching this Jets game right now makes me appreciate the last two days of Knicks matinees…

At least the Orangemen played some serious winning basketball this week and even the football team won…

Looking forward to the Lakers game though…keep your heads up Knicks and remember…what is your profession?!

Great game by the Knicks. They were gutsy and never gave up. Like the fact that Gallo is driving the lane alot more but he still has to work on his handle and moving without the ball. Al played great also with passion and emotion along with Nate. The Celtics were not playing at their best at all and we should have won. My biggest beef tho is what is the plan with the Knicks. I have a few questions.

Are we showcasing the vets to trade them if not where is the youth movement?

Is Jordan Hill the next Jerome James (Bench Warmer)

Is this the best that Chandler has?

Would we have won this game if we had a healthy T Mac?

Are we tryin to win more games and make the playoffs at the expense of the young guys?

If so why if half the roster wont be here next year?

In all fairness I think its a little premature to judge Eddy after 3games considering he hasnt played in 2years… But I love his effort… And energy and I’ve never said that about Eddy… He gave Wallace and Perkins fits… Which is more than you can say for Lee, Eddy gets to the line and puts opposing big men in foul trouble… He also forces them to play defense on the block and not cheat and help out on other offensive players… As far as his flagrant foul, people always complained Eddy didnt have a mean streak but when he shows some aggression or passion, people still complain… I’ve seen Shaq do alot worse, than what he did…

I agree.

Curry is not a great player, but he’s a big body, draws a lot of fouls and is a very efficient inside scorer when he’s at his best. He hasn’t played in so long it’s pretty ridiculous to expect him to walk on the court and be 100%. We have to give him a few weeks at least.

I can be really critical of players and point out their weaknesses, but some Knicks fans are just too much. They hate certain players (like Curry). No matter what they do they find the bad. On the flip side they love other players and overlook all the flaws.

There isn’t a single good all around player on the Knicks.

I love Gallo as a prospect, but right now he can’t play defense, is as slow footed as they come, is a poor rebounder for a man his size, is not exactly accumulating assists (and didn’t in Europe either), and occasionally shows a lack of hustle. In fact, all he has shown so far is that he’s an excellent shooter and efficient scorer. Yet somehow he is totally immune to criticism. I don’t get it.

Good game by the Knicks, they played with some fire finally, heartbreaking loss. A three game streak wouldve been great.

Was a shame not to see Gallo down the stretch a bit more, but I guess they thought we needed experience in OT, and was almost correct. Though Duhon is a dog, whats the answer can we start Hughes at the point?

Just watched the highlights again on espn, Garnett’s screen on the final play looked a bit suspect….

I dont know what Steiker said but I said he has to do more than stand by the 3 pt line. He is driving now but getting the ball taken a bit too much. I would like for him to do more like Rip and come off of Screen Rolls. I dont think he will be the type to take anybody off the dribble just yet.

Valiant effort from the Knicks tonight…I don’t care what anyone says…even tho that flagrant foul came at a wrong time. I LOVE the fact that E-City is not backing down or taking no crap from no one! I thought Xavier McDaniel was out here knocking dudes…lol

I think this year Boston is showing their holes and teams are gonna expose em for sure so it’s gonna be tough for them all year round. Sorta like the now de-funked Duhon/Lee pick n roll play.

WHERE IS JORDAN HILL?

Can’t wait for this team to make KG and many teams pay one day for the way they act after games for sure…

Knicks so far are getting it I feel…no looking back at the A.I thing no more…not sure how many games they win this year but even Chicago went to the play-offs after starting 1-9….We shall hope and we shall see…Because the east teams are hurting record wise this year…

Sign me in with those who liked the flagrant foul.

It was about damn time SOMEBODY from our team knocked down a player from the other team. We have been getting smacked around the court. Finally somebody stood up.

And that’s why I’m loving what I’m seeing from Curry. The old “don’t give a sh*t” attitude is behind him. He wants it. He its trying. Heck that’s just what I was asking. There is no shame on showing some heart and showing you care. I’m just sorry Eddy had to go through all he went to find that fire in him.

Wishing you the best EC, keep it up and please… feel free to knock down more guys who are used to just drive to the basket against us. We NEED that. I know a former #34 would be proud.

The flagrant foul would have been stupid if anyone else did it, but coming from Curry it was a great sign. One of his biggest problems has been a lack of passion, but he’s playing very passionately right now. He’s not taking shit from anyone down there and personally I like it . I’d like to see some bodies flying once in awhile.

I loved the fire by Curry, but we have to keep it in perspective he didn’t do it on the defensive end when the C’s went to the basket. Now offensively he looks aggressive and he wants it which is great. I don’t know if he is playing hard so he can stay with the Knicks or he wants to be traded and get a new contract. Either way its a plus but Lee and Curry can’t play together which is a downer.

The Knicks finally looked like a real basketball team.

But the fact that they had a foul to give and didn’t use it (again!) is absolutely crazy. Even Mike Breen wanted to throw tomatoes at Mike D’Antoni. I don’t know, maybe David Lee and Wilson Chandler didn’t execute it. But I think D’Antoni’s the culprit.

By the way Eddy Curry’s attitude was encouraging from my POV, and I couldn’t care less about the flagrant foul – it was actually a POSITIVE sign in my opinion. He’s a real center, his presence changes everything.

BUT….Can someone learn how to bounce pass to a center on this team?

I am sorry Du-Du is not cutting it here and Mike D is being so stubborn it’s sad to watch….

Come on Duhon plays over 46 mins and only gets 6 assists? This “non-driving to the basket” pg is getting ridiculous…T-Doug should be getting more light. One small mistake he makes at the end of one game and Mike D doesn’t play him much…baffles me!

I agree. Nate was playing well enough to warrant playing in the last moments of the game. Rondo guarding Duhon the Knicks were playing 4 on 5 cuz Duhon is doing nothing in that matchup. I like Curry’s passion, the flagrant didn’t bother me (Especially since it was on Rondo who I am not a fan of). He was also up cheering when he wasn’t in the game. The foul to give was a big problem but hey it could’ve been worse. We could’ve got blown out and gave 0% of effort.

Well TD is real good at scoring, but his dishing has to get better. Hill I don’t know what the deal is. He played real well against ATL but got into foul trouble and you barely see him play again. Mike D must know something that we don’t know. And Gallo may have some small back issues because he has spurts when he can drive to the hole but I don’t think he is gonna dive for any loose balls or bang inside anytime soon. It may be stamina or he is afraid to injure his back again which is understandable. But its all moot because it seems clear that Mike wants to win and he said screw the youth development thing. We still need a go to guy down the stretch.

Tough loss… I was at the game; the energy in the garden went from nothing to amazing, and it peaked when Eddy curry got the technical.

Couple things worth pointing out: It kind of bothers me how much is in the hands of the refs. They proved in the closing minutes that they can completely dictate the outcome. They saw they missed the trip on the megatron so they call a bullshit offensive foul on ray allen to make up for it. That is not the proper way to officiate a sport; its too subjective.

There were long stretches where there was automatically a foul on both sides of the floor every time down the floor; foul shots on both sides every possession… that is not fun to watch.

The other major point i want to make is one that has been thrown around a lot lately; Duhon is absolute garbage. He cannot play with this team any more, it is enough. he can’t get around anybody, when he does get into the lane he either dribbles back out or throws a bad pass out for a bad three. He isn’t good at defense. He has absolutely no way of scoring the basketball unless he is left completely wide open, which he often is and still fails to finish.

I know we don’t have another true point guard on the roster; but i agree with the concept that we should just let nate run the point and either sink or swim. Duhon does not have to tools to help us win games; it’s as simple as that. The season is young and it might be early to be calling d’antoni stubborn. It is normal to give your once-guarenteed starters a chance to prove/re-prove themselves…. But sooner than later, the kid just needs to take a seat.

I definitely agree jeff. there is no reason that Duhon should still be playing and it shows the stubborness of Dantoni. However in his defense, he played pretty good d on Ray allen, fighting over screens a bunch of time to get to him. Robinson and Doug both had some problems with him and house when they were in, and I think Dantoni liked the matchup with Hughes on Rondo. Thats still no excuse for his atrocious offensive play, and the fact of the matter is he makes nobody even remotely better on this team and kills their pick and roll offense and entire fastbreak. Definitely should entrust the offense to either Doug or Robinson, or maybe both at this point with the inconsistent play of Hughes.

It always amazes me how many of the posters continue to spell EDDY CURRY’S name wrong. It was a great game. Knicks competed through out. I have an issue however with D’Antoni’s rotation down the stretch. Why was Nate on the bench in favor of Duhon when he provides another offensive threat? Why the hell was NO D Lee in the game when there is a better defensive option on the bench for that final play? I don’t get how the coach does not emphasize during the time out to use the foul so that Boston has to reset their play with less time.

2009-11-23 10:41:29

i think many of you underestimate Duhon. I am not saying he is great, or even that good… but TD is NOT ready to run the offense (hopefully by seasons end he is) and nate is NOT a pg. Getting on MD for playing him is fruitless because he has no other options.

And I still am not upset about passing on sessions…

Also – if any of you actually read the postgame recap, you would see this from david lee: “We had talked about waiting and stopping Pierce’s progress and we did that and didn’t think they would have time to throw back and still get a shot off. I am expecting Pierce to try and make a move and pull up. Good play by them and it is just unfortunate to lose a game like this. We knew we had a foul to give and we didn’t get one.
