Sources: Knicks Want to Talk T-Mac
By Tommy Dee - Nov 22, 2009 10:04 am

Via Hahn:

“…The Knicks have been trying to engage the Rockets in talks regarding Tracy McGrady since the summer.

Multiple sources told Newsday that New York could try to contact Houston again, this time with greater success, in the wake of reported issues between McGrady and the Rockets.

There was a reported confrontation between McGrady and coach Rick Adelman, which both denied, this week regarding the star’s return from a knee injury…”

Eddy Curry, plus for T-Mac is a deal that was first speculated by Ric Bucher, who admitted it on the Brandon Tierney Show around draft time. And we applaud him for putting on his thinking cap, although, at the time, Curry didn’t have trade value. I believe Curry does now and will continue to show it. Something like Curry, Chandler and Mobley for McGrady and David Anderson.

If the Knicks have been calling, it’s about time the Rockets at least answered the phone.

While you’re enjoying your Sunday reading, hit up Bermans all-time brutal Knicks 5.  Great list, but I have to say that Bob Thornton has to be on there somewhere.

I don’t think Curry has trade value at this moment. But if he progresses and shows strides, stays healthy then he will have some value. But him just being on the court I don’t think shows enough.

Forget about Curry I am worried about this number $22,843,124. Tommy you forgot to post important information like how long is this player under contract for. T-Mac is probably worse than having AI, The dude has not played a full season since his 71 games in 2006/07. I don’t think is ready to pay $22,843,124 for a player who most likely won’t be able to play because he is not durable. I don’t think LBJ or Wade would want to play with a player who is not durable.

This is the last year of Tmacs contract. Won’t affect 2010

If it is his last year, then we have nothing to lose. The Rockets could use a big man and they get a bonus in Wilson Chandler or who ever they want on our roster. It looks like a good trade for both teams. We may even resign Tmac in 2010 for the right price.

T-Mac getting paid 22 million doesn’t really matter because he is off the books for 2010.

I doubt he can do it, but if Walsh pulls this one off even the haters will have to give him some credit here lol

People need to stop equating critisism with being a “hater”.

T-mac is just a diversion because people are upset about Iverson.

I thought signing AI was a risk-free move.

Worst case scenario, he totally bugs out and is the next Marbury. Cut him immediately and move on.

Best case scenario, he plays like the Iverson of old, somehow proves he can do this for a couple more seasons, and entices Lebron to come to NYC.

I don’t think either of those are happening, but I would still be excited for the much more realistic option. Iverson plays well enough as a starter, but doesn’t really change the Knicks destiny this season. Maybe some exciting games. However, the fact that he can keep it together and play decent ball is intriguing enough for competitive teams in the hunt. One of these teams is BOUND to take a flier on him for the playoff push, especially if they have an injury or something. They’d only be risking the prorated veteran’s minimum. So, suddenly, the Knicks have a valuable trade chip in February. Maybe we get a pick, or a young PG, or maybe Iverson is even good enough to move with Curry or Jeffries. Why not take this gamble!?!?

Doubters say that it will hurt the development of our young guys and take their minutes. Well, don’t let it. Make Iverson’s minutes eat into the burn of Nate, Duhon, and Hughes. Leave Douglas alone. Hell, let Hughes get some DNPs if necessary. I don’t care.

How is T Mac a diversion from Iverson and we have been taliking about him for months? Also are you watching these game Hughes is ballin and playing defense I would not cut into his minutes .

Wow, really shortsighted. If the Knicks can offload Curry’s 2010 for the price of Harrington (and getting T-mac for the year), how is possible that signing AI even a consideration? Next year you don’t have AI (thank god) and no Curry (a miracle) and possible a top flight player along with two top 10 players. Doh.

If Donnie can swap Curry in a deal and bring back an expiring like T-Mac – then I will be more inclined to jump on the Donnie bandwagon – right now I’m in neutral with only the sting off the drafts balancing out the trades of Crawford and Randolph clearing cap space.

I believe they have to move Mobley’s contract – if they want to – by the end of November – or else insurance will not pick up the full price for his new team.

I think all that matters here is getting rid of curry, if they can do that then I’ll sacrifice other peoples minutes for Tmac and the shot to get 2 max free agents here next summer. (while possibly being able to re-sign mcgrady on the cheap if he happens to pan out)

good interview with Worldwide Wes about Eddy.. Gives some insight from an insider

http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/10904/on-the-lifeline-between-the-knicks-eddy-curry-and-william-wesley

the best thing walshie could do is move Curry for a large expiring like McGrady.

Hahn has been tooting this Houston horm for some time. He tends to focus on finding sources to support his own ideas.

Its a good deal.. Curry, Chandler, Mobley for T Mac. Im not sure how great a fit Chandelr is with Battier and Ariza on long term commitments at the 3 and Scola hold down the 4 spot. I dont think Morley is dumb enough to think Chandler is a 2 guard..

Personally, I would have rolled the dice on Practice Man, but I can respect why Walsh decided to pass after the Starberry song and dance. That being said, if T-Mac is damaged goods, then why bother?

Let’s face it, we all love the Knicks, we’re impatient and we’ll vent for the rest of the year. I’m fine with leaving the roster as is for the rest of the year and let’s see which of these young players have character at the end of the year and will stick around.

As for Nate…hahaha, c’mon, make sure you aim at our basket next time! You are one funny guy though :p Get yourself out of the doghouse and use that energy on the court! I enjoyed the victory against the Nets yesterday, and appreciated the help on defense that Chandler was giving Lee, and the efforts of Lee and Dino as well. However, Darko, where are you? Show some liveliness, some energy! Can we get him some chocolates, some espresso? Oh yeah, and Devin Harris is sooo overrated!

Go Knicks, keep building!

Why bother? Because getting Curry’s contract out of our hair is of the utmost importance.

First off…I am one of the biggest Eddy Curry supporters around, and it has been a rough time supporting him. Nothing made me happier than to see him on the court and playing well (better against Indiana).

HOWEVER…the most important thing the Knicks need to do is trade Curry & Jeffries during this season. That is more important than playing well and more important than making the playoffs. We dont want to just make the playoffs…we want to win a Ring. The way to do that is not with this team but with hopefully Lebron or Wade (and bosh combined with one of those two…cause I never see those two sharing the spotlight).

For us to get Lebron/Wade, it will be WAYYYYY more attractive to have Bosh already signed, with the extra Curry cap space, than be a team that has 38 wins and loses in the first round of the playoffs with this team and room for only 1 FA. That will be a harder sell to Lebron/Wade than it would be for them coming fresh here to rebuild with 2 young Olympians.

Love me some Curry, but if it means two free agents in 2010, then we have to do this move.

Why can’t it be done without Chandler…giving Curry/Mobily saves them about 12M in total payroll, including Lux tax…that 12M alone should be enough without having to send chandler.

Houston isnt even answering the phone right now according to Hahn.. they want a young player and are right to ask for that if they are taking on Curry’s 11 mil in 2010/11

Mobley saves them 7 mil or so this year with the insurance.

I am in agreement dino, I would want T Mac just becuase he is not a risk like A.I. would be attitude wise. And he is an All Star player and if he and thats a big if, if he stays healthy he can be the secondary player to a Lebron or Wade that we really dont have on the roster. We did not have a go to player since Pat Ewing and Sprewell. Gallo may over time develop that game but right now he doesnt have it obviously. So I am all for it. I think T Mac not playing even tho he says he is healthy and getting into it with Rick is all planned out to have him traded for a bag of balls. Is it Curry no, but Curry Chandler and maybe even Darko or Harrington could do the deal. Shaves some money off the roster in more ways than one. Not a capologist so I am not sure if it matches salary wise but I would want T mac over A.I. just for position and future purposes and you know he will be juiced to play in the Garden. Nate well after getting into it with Herb the other night and shooting at the Nets basket shows that the Knicks management did not think it through in regards to resigning Nate not only his tirades during last season getting into it with the refs, teamates and opposing players but the tweet arrest fiasco.

I agree with you about Nate, what he does isn’t funny but plain stupid, and doesn’t it drive you nuts when he is all out on the court while he is on the bench during games, I love a player who cheers on his teammates but what is he doing standing in front of Dantoni. Cheer on your teammates as much as you can but respect the boundaries of the game. Nate’s antics are getting old and it hurts the fans even more that he has talent.

Would Houston want Nate instead?

If Chandler HAS to go thats a bummer i think i’d rather trade Hill than Wilson.

Also for when draft time comes around :

John Wall is OVERRATTED

Trade Washington for there number 1st round pick Paul George is a stud in this system he would dominate.

Gotta agree with itzy on this one, he’s not over rated and if we had the opportunity to draft him I’d do it in a heartbeat. Can’t find the link after some semi invested googling, but I remember a quote from James talkin about how wall is the real deal after seeing him play at LBJ skills camp…

Not to mention he IS the real deal (far as I can see anyways).

Possible Deal:
Curry 10.5M, Mobley 9.5M, Jeffries 6.5M=26.5M for
McGrady 23.2M, Barry 2.0M, and Dorsey 0.9M=26.1M

Positives:
Salaries close.

Houston gets a more traditional big to step-in for Yao; move Scola to 4. Curry and Andersen give better insurance policy in case Yao’s recovery is slow. Leaves Hayes, Anderson, Cook, etc. to fill more traditional backup 4 and 5 roles. Allows Houston to have greater frontcourt depth. Jeffries gives more depth and ability to guard 1s; Jeffries also an “intangible” guy that Houston likes. Expiring (in 2010) Jeffries and Curry may enable Houston to involve themselves in sign and trade for a guy like Bosh in offseason.

Knicks get rid of Jeffries and Curry, obviously. Barry can play three spots; Barry in final year of deal. Dorsey could be a poor man’s Oakley; very low cap figure; Dorsey, playing in D-League, overlaps with Hayes, Landry, so may be expendable in Houston’s mind.

Negatives:

Houston doesn’t get as much cap space in 2010 as hoped for. Putting Jeffries in may kill deal. Team salary in 2010 with Jeffries and Curry would put them in luxury tax zone. Curry may regress; Curry not a defensive guy, and Houston likes defensive guys.

Low probability of occurring. But possible, nonetheless.

I think we should wait for as long as possible to see if we can get rid of Curry’s contract without ditching Chandler.

The fact is, Curry still demands a double team in the post. Theres gotta be a team out there that could benefit from this.

I see this trade as a Curry salary dump. I’m not sold on T-Mac as an effective starter.

The problem with believing any deal with Curry/T-Mac is that Houston is one of the best managed teams in all of professional sports. As such, they use a lot of advanced stats that would tell them that even at his peak, Curry was not that good.

Why would they want a player like him on the books for two years when T-Mac is gone at the end of the tear?

If Curry was actually a good player it might make some sense.

More likely might be Jeffries plus a few players for TMac. Even though Jeffies is almost useless as an every day player, he can be a useful role player in spots and his contract is not quite as bad.

This is the most likely scenario in any deal for Tmac, and trading Jeffries is almost as good as trading Curry.

I highly doubt that Houston will take Curry even if we agree to ship Chandler, who doesn’t fit in their system.
