As we walk through the final play, Chandler probably should have aggressively crowded Pierce and fouled with 4 seconds left.
As the play unfolds, watch Al Harrington, who does a decent job of being in help in the paint to stop Pierce’s drive and if KG rolls, but he has to be one pass away or at least read if KG’s reaction to Lee’s show and the fact that Duhon was in the corner ready to help. It’s pretty much unstoppable for a few reasons. If the Knicks foul with 4, they can run the exact play again. As you notice the pick and pop action takes a little over 2 seconds to complete, but it would be coming off an in bound situation.
Secondly, with Ray Allen in the corner he’s ready to shoot should Duhon help and if Lee doesn’t show then Pierce shoots the elbow jumper.
A perfect triple option called by Doc Rivers, and the difference between the Celts and most of the NBA.

That’s a bad read by Lee. You show if there is a true pick. Garnett never made an honest pick. He slid and Chandler was right on it. It was perfect because they knew that Lee (or whoever was guarding Garnett) would take the faux pick and get caught in no where land.
But it was also a bad move by D’Antoni to have slow-footed Lee guarding Garnett. THis was probably a good time for Jeffries or Hill to be in Garnett’s grill.
And this is a good comment.
They’re the Celtics; fantastic. Perfect triple option? Come on… No one should be left that open on the final play of a game. That’s heart and hustle. If KG makes it in someone’s grill, fine. I like David, too, but why he’s on the court at that point in time, I don’t know. Not cool.
Player execution notwithstanding, the defensive “strategy” for this play was doomed from the start when D’Ant didn’t give (or forgot he had) a foul to disrupt the play. Pierce s/h/b fouled, yes … but the problem there is Will is on him with 5 fouls. The solution ? Sub Landry or maybe even J-Hill for Will just for that purpose. Instead of reading his press clippings from Pheonix days, D’Ant should brush up on some of Red Holzman’s offense/defene end of game sub strategies for just this type of situation.
Could the C’s have run the same play again with 4 or 5 secs instead of 9 ? Of course but their execution would have had to be faster & the Knicks would have seen a glimpse of it had they disrupted it earlier.
PS, IGMKNICKS, Jefferies wasn’t available Sunday because of a knee injury but you have the right idea. Also, Kendrick Perkins said right after the game that the play they ran was open “all day” … KG just had not taken the shot or missed a few when he had. So TD,, even though you say Doc’s triple option is the difference “between the Celts & most of the NBA” … the fact that the play had been open “all day” when the C’s ran it indicates the difference between the KNICKS (defensively) and most of the rest of the NBA !
… the difference defensively AND coaching wise …
Chinks in the armor of the “greatest coach in the world” are being exposed for the NBA, the world and possible free agents.
I agree with everybody; I’m just curious where this greatest coach in the world thing came from lol.
It’s a quote from Crain’s I believe? Tommy should know, it ’s from an article that was posted on this site.
Who cares if Chandler had 5 fouls, his presence was not mandatory. He had to foul, period.
Lee said after the game that they all knew they had a foul to give but didnt have a chance to get one off…
i know it doesnt make sense, but they def knew about it so blaming the coach doesnt seem right.
Some people never take the orange & blue glasses off…
Jared Jeffries was injuried and putting Hill on Garnett for the last possession isn’t what I call a “confidence builder”. Theorically I think Al Harrington would have been a better choice, but he had 5 fouls (correct me if I’m wrong).
Wilson Chandler and David Lee HAD to foul (it’s easier to defend coming off an in-bound situation), they just didn’t do it.
i agree about the foul…any time after action to the hoop is risky and with 4 seconds left it’s plenty of time. but ur right, you have to make them try again.
no jeffries and hill hadnt played all game, cant put him in on the last play.
doc loaded the side of the floor and attacked lee, end of story
I believe Pierce called that last play, not Rivers.
From the recap on NBA.com:
Boston called a full timeout with the game tied at 105 and Celtics coach Doc Rivers had initially wanted to run a misdirection play, but Pierce convinced him to change his mind.
“He said, ‘If I can get the floor flat, I’m going to get to the basket or get KG a shot,’” Rivers said. “Sometimes, the coach is a good listener, but honestly Paul called that play.”
——-
I think that’s the big difference. Every good coach needs a leader on the floor. Coaching can only take a team so far. The Celtics have 3 coaches on the floor. The fact that we took a team with 3, possibly 4 future HOFers to overtime was impressive to me.
Still, we shoulda had that game. Terrible defensive communication and a miscue by D’antoni on not using that foul.
Rondo might be the best point guard in the East.
Stop sleepin on my boy Derrick Rose.
Might be. Arenas looks like he’s getting back to his old self and Jennings is an up and comer. Regardless, Rondo is a stud. That pesky outside shot and ft% is still holding him back from elite status.
Arenas is the most overrated point guard in the league imo, he’s respected because he’s a Rick Kamla type of player but – in fact – he’s just an average point guard in my opinion.
Rajon Rondo schooled Derrick Rose in the 1st round series last year, despite Rose’s CLASSIC performance in game 1.
Right now, I think Rondo and Jennings are the best PG’s in the Conference.
Lee should have fouled because Wilson was making plays had we gone to another overtime without Chandler we would have lost, so I don’t like Chandler fouling in that situation but Lee should have wrapped up Peirce.
I don’t understand … how is it not possible to have subbed Landry for Will & have him foul Pierce ? He’s about Pierce’s height & supposedly plays D. Just because he hadn’t played so what ? He would have been in for a specific task & s/h/b able to execute that task … There are plenty of instances (i.e. Holzman using Phil Jackson back in the day) when coaches use players to “windmill” an inbounds play or give a foul when he hasn’t played before then … D’Ant DOES NOT get off the hook for that blunder …
Everyone is on here giving constructive criticism to the coach and the team (even though they probably don’t read it). there is no reason to come on here with the same sarcastic condescending remarks about the coach over and over again. We all get it; he isn’t perfect and neither are any of the players on our team, but it’s enough with the sarcastic negativity already; it’s getting really annoying. I don’t recall anyone coming on here claiming D’Antoni is the best coach in the world, so unless you actually have something meaningful to say maybe you can drop the whole act at least for the remainder of the season. Nobody was even argueing about how good or not good the coach is, so you aren’t responding to anyone but yourself, and maybe an article that was posted on here months ago. No one cares.
Mucha; Rondo might be the best PG in the east statistically, but i don’t think he is really the best point guard in the east. His steel numbers are amazing, and so are his rebounds for a PG. But the truth is he doesn’t really have a great offensive skill set. he roams around the paint in circles and only shoots when he has a wide open layup (which he can create better than many guards because of his speed, but my point remains none-the-less.)
You have to consider the fact that he is playing next to an unbelievably talented group of players and he keep passing them the ball until one of them scores; that is clearly the reason for his high assist totals. I don’t see him as a brilliant executioner on the pick and roll or anything like that, he’s just physically better than all other PG’s and his hall of fame teamates make him a lot better.
Do you think he would be as big of a deal if he was the PG on a team like… i don’t know, the knicks?
Well Rondo almost averaged a triple double WITHOUT KG / WITH A SLUMPING RAY ALLEN against the Chicago Bulls in the 1st round series.
Rondo is 6′1, he’s not significantly better – physically – than other point guards (Derrick Rose is stronger/taller yet Rondo was dominant against him – if game 1 doesn’t count), he’s just more aggressive.
To each his own though.
PS I think Westbrook will be rich man’s Rajon Rondo. In 1 or 2 years Westbrook > Rondo.
I just think that the combination of a good handle and great physical abilities will lead to amazing stats for a PG on a team filled with allstars, but as a pure PG i don’t think his skills are there yet. I think the best way to judge a PG is how he can control and game and lead an offense. You see CP3 and Deron doing this, but rondo doesn’t even really have the chance to because of his team. I think if he needs to develop a consistent mid-range shot to be considered elite on that level. At this point, i see him as an extremely strong, tall, agressive, long, defensive PG with a really good handle.
On a bad team, would you rather have Rose or Rondo? Jennings or Rondo? Harris or Rondo? I chose the former in all three cases…
Duhon or Rondo? I kid…
ROTFL
Rose and Jennings over Rondo (long-term)
Rondo over Harris
I think there is a subtle difference between athletic ability/talent/skill and playing smart/well.
I don’t think Rondo is the most athletically gifted or skilled PG out there, but as far as I am concerned, despite his shortcomings from the outside and the FT line etc.. he’s the most efficient PG in the east. Basically, he contributes more to his team winning than any PG other than CP3.
Having great players to pass to probably helps his assist total at the margin, but it holds down other stats because he’s not a primary option on offense.
