ESPN.com is reporting that the Nets are poised to fire Lawrence Frank. Frank, the coach of the winless Nets, started out with a bang in NJ, but has coached mediocre teams the last couple of seasons.
Frank has had a tough job over the last couple of seasons. Once the trio of Carter, Jefferson, and Kidd started to sour, all three were shipped off, one by one. With injuries and just a lack of proven talent, Frank has not been able to get his team a win thus far this season.
I only write about this because I am very much interested to see who the Nets ultimately bring in to coach. Unlike some other jobs, the Nets’ coaching vacancy has the potential to be a very interesting one. If the Nets do in fact move to Brooklyn, then what coach would not want to be a part of that? Much like the Nets can do this summer with free agents, they have the chance to make a serious move here and bring in a well-respected, quality head coach.
I happen to like Lawrence Frank. I respect what he has been able to do. But 0-16 is 0-16. I think Frank will catch on elsewhere soon.
If the Nets bring in a well-known coach, that might help them in bringing in a well-known talen this summer.

Mark Jackson, Kenny Anderson, They should bring in a New York guy!
Sad for Lawrence Frank…
Started 0-13, Ended 0-17
Didnt he start off 13 -0??
u get rid of all his players and the rest are injured and you fire the guy
I wonder should we add this guyto the staff?
Dammit, my mind is on losing O_o
Yeah, I meant to say
Started 13-0, ended 16-0
Don’t you mean 0-16? lol don’t sweat it man, none of us have editors at our disposal.
Why don’t they just bring in Byron Scott. Have some type of experience in there with that winless team.
because lawrence Frank took Byron Scott’s job when he coached the Nets.
O, well obviously I didn’t know that. lol
As of I have said before – the Nets are set up so well after this season. They have:
1) Devin Harris, Brooks Lopez, Terrence Williams – essentially your starting PG, C, and sixth man of the future;
2) they have loads of cap space to play w/ this offseason; and
3) most importantly – they have their lottery pick.
This is a loaded draft for – key word – the lottery picks – and by loaded – their are some franchise players out there that could very well blossom into just as big as stars as some of the FAs of 2010.
Think about it – they could have the following lineup a year from now:
PG – Harris
SG – Joe Johnson
C- Lopez
SF – Rudy Gay
PF – Derek Favors (the kid from GT who is ultra talented)
or they could go
PG – Harris
SG – Wesley Johnson (the amazing junior from Syracuse)
C- Lopez
SF – Gay
PF – Bosh
They have so many opportunities – I’m jealous. Mainly b/c we do not have that draft pick.
Imagine – just imagine – if we had the draft pick plus cap space like the Nets. It hurts too much to dwell on the reckless past of MSG front office and how they mortgaged the future for countless failed attempts to grab the meaningless no. 8 seed in the East.
Isiah apologists will deflect attention away from how horrible the Marbury trade was by pointing out that Walsh passed on Jennings…which is a more understandable move considering Jennings own agent didn’t think he would go in the lottery (keeping him out of the green room). Phoenix was dying to move Marbury…why even throw in a first rounder that goes unprotected at any point?
Im jealous to. If we could manage to get our hands on Greg Monroe
PG-Toney
SG-Johnson
C-Monroe
SF-Lebron
PF-Hill
sounds better to me.
Monroe would be great – BUT PG John Walls, Kentucky, would be amazing too.
Imagine a world w/ a draft pick and no Curry:
PG – Walls
SG – Gallinari
C – Bosh
PF – Hill
SF – LeBron
If Donnie could somehow get us one of those Top 10 talents on our roster I will forever call Him Mr. The Best GM Ever Donnie Walsh.
derrick favors is extremely raw. Harris has been terrible this year, he’s 0-13 from three. He’s essentially had one all star half of a year and since then he’s been average.
Terrence Williams? 36% fg, 30% 3 pt, 65% ft….please
Courtney Lee?30% fg, 18% 3pt, doesn’t look any good without 4 veteran all stars around him
Brook Lopez is a softy who doesn’t rebound and can’t guard David Lee. Lebron’s not dying to play with him, he’s played with him for 6 years.
His name is Zydraunas Ilgauskas.
The Nets are just as much of a mess as us, except they’re going to have the worst start in NBA history.
First – Harris has been injured – and yes was an All-Star – which is more than we can say about any of our players.
Second – Lopez is a league leader in blocks – and has improved every facet of his game – plus you cannot teach height. Sorry – I will take 17.9 ppg, 8.9 rpg, 2.5 bpg for a 21 year old 7 foot center any day. Plus his 18 point game, 12 rebounds, and 4 block shots against my Knicks – I do not actually what I call soft. It also does not say much about Lee that you are using him as a reference point to poke fun at some other team’s player by saying he cannot even guard Lee.
Third – any team would be crazy to pass up on Derek Favors (rated no. 3 currently by scouts), or even John Walls – (they could then move Harris for – wait for it – wait for it – another draft lottery pick or missing piece – you see the Nets have players the rest of the league actually wants), or even the 7 footer from Europe who could be the next Dirk or even Ed Davis or even – you get the point – and if the kid from the University of Texas comes out – SG of the future right there.
Fourth – of course Favors is raw – he’s a freshman in college – but so was Bosh when he was also at – wait for it again – Georgia Tech – bingo.
Fifth – you did not get the point of my post – the Nets have two more assets than we have (Harris – an all-star AND Lopez a young center who can block shots – sorry one Saturday afternoon game does not change what the rest of league views of the big 7 footer from Stanford) plus their draft pick in a LOADED LOTTERY DRAFT and plus CAP SPACE.
Did you notice that I can put together scenarios where the Nets retool w/out Lebron.
You and the rest of this blog continue to fixate on Lebron – it is right now very speculative and until July 2010 comes around – it is just daydreaming.
Whereas the Nets have their draft pick that they can count on and a developing trio of Harris, Williams (who they actually play and besides looking at pure scouts has drawn raves – even Donnie Walsh was considering him in the draft process – and he comes from a good college program from Louisville).
It hurts – plain and simple – not having a lottery pick for 2010 – especially when we are rebuilding.
And the Nets are actually playing their young players.
And there is also a reason why Devin Harris was selected no. 5 overall, was traded for Jason Kidd, and made an all-star game already in his young career. The Knicks do not have anyone of his caliber on their roster – nor is there a FA to be PG who can rival Devin Harris – when healthy.
So – pleeeeeaaase – the Nets are not in just of a mess as the Knicks – what b/c of three games – the Nets have their draft pick, have two guys they can play right now in Harris and Lopez who are better than anything we have on the roster, have more cap space than us next year, and most importantly – the ugly little secret that all Knicks fan want to avoid and not get troubled by to this day and upset – they have their lottery pick.
Myles is always saying something off the wall. He loves this team and I respect that, but sometimes he can be one of those fans who tries to devalue anyone or anything to make their team seem less of an abhorrent display. I love the Knicks too, but mine is a tough love. I was once of the latter ilk, so I can relate.
That’s cool – I am just not of the school of pretending that things are better than they seem. I go only on what I know – and I know – as of now – we do not have a lottery selection in a loaded draft for lottery purposes – there is a difference b/w loaded draft and nice complementary players outside of the lottery – which this draft may have and that’s great for playoff contending teams – but not when you are the Knicks – who need to score with lottery loaded players like Walls, like Cousins, like the European freaky talent 7 footer.
I am also not holding my breath and keeping the faith that Lebron has a 50/50 chance of coming here – until he actually signs – then I will start to believe – until then – everything else is speculation – just like a good percentage of people who thought a week ago w/ Curry coming off one solid game against Indiana that he could have trade value to Houston??? Now Curry’s injured again with the same knee that sidelined him in the past. (shaking head).
It’s going to take a while to get out of this mess – you do not clean up the kind of mess that was this decade in just two seasons – it will take lottery picks and quality FAs – there is no easy solution. It just really hurts not having that pick – especially when we are one of the five worst teams in the league.
Dude you’re preaching to the choir. I’ve said and outlined the same ideas and concerns you just have.
Problem is they chose to pick up “nice complementary players” (at positions we didn’t need them no less smh) the last two lotteries instead of trying to swing for the fences and draft a potential star. Now next year they’ll again get some “nice complementary players” in the second round? What exactly is the plan here? Because I’m not too comfortable with this LeBron or bust strategy.
Hate to say it – but you might have to get with the realist plan and not buy 100% into the 2010 strategy – which I think you already do.
The Knicks were really hurt in the previous two drafts by their lottery position. While Brandon Jennings hurts – I can honestly say that I did not think he would be this good right away – I was thinking Jrue Holiday project.
What we really needed was Russell Westbrook in 2008 – and this past lottery Tyreke Evans in 2009 – both were available at the no. 4 – we just were not in position to take either. Why? B/c we were still obsessed with trying to be good and competitive while rebuilding – sorry those two do not go together. And the irony is that we are finally going to have that truly terrible record again but will not get the benefit of the lottery selection (just like with Chicago twice before – though fortunately they took Tyrus Thomas so that does not hurt as much).
I think the best we can realistically hope for is one FA this upcoming offseason – that probably will not make us a playoff contender.
Then it is wait for the 2011 lottery and Curry’s and Jefferies’ contracts to come off the books and the summer of Melo.
It is going to be a process – a process we should have started a long time ago – but Dolan and certain members of the fan base were unwilling to undergo b/c getting the no. 8 seed was sooooo important. Argggggg.
Haha! You’re new here aren’t you?
The Realist plan was originally the HaS plan.
I wanted the team to tank and play Chandler more at the 2 to get the experience and develop his handle (instead he was injured all summer and couldn’t improve), force Nate to learn the 1 and/or trade him, trade Lee (both for more picks maybe?) and hope the ping pong balls bounce in the Knicks’ favor.
Instead like you said they tried to make a “push for the playoffs” and I hated the idea then, but I take no comfort in being right today. My team still sucks.
Exactly Has – I bow to you for hatching this plan originally.
All we needed was the no. 4 pick the last two drafts.
PG – Westbrook
SG – Evans
C – Hibbert (what if Donnie had tried to trade Lee or Chandler to Indiana w/ his prior connections heading into the 2008 draft and gotten their selection)
SF – Gay
PF – Bosh
And then the bench – headlined by Toney Douglas and maybe Harrington back on the veterans deal.
I am just throwing stuff out there tonight as I brew over not having a draft pick in the 2010 draft – I mean a lottery pick not some 2nd round flyers.
You are a fan of much wisdom Has – much wisdom.
Sorry – meant HaS – no disrespect.
lol no disrespect taken.
good stuff..
but i hate to break it to you..
Chicago used the pick we traded on LaMarcus Aldridge who was traded to Portland for Tyrus Thomas.
Damn Big that’s cold, man. Cold.
My bad Bigs – at least it was not Brandon Roy – who Portland took what 6 or 7th – I have no regrets over not getting Aldridge really – nice player – but not worth the extension he received by Portland. Either Tyrus or Aldridge I can live w/
Now if it had been the 2007 draft and we missed out on Kevin Durant – thankfully the Bulls picked – what 9th and took Noah – that would have been brutal. If we realistically lost the chance at Durant to play either SG or SF for the next ten years – that would hurt the most.
This is why this year’s draft lottery is going to hurt – it’s loaded lottery wise and we could be missing out on a young player who could be just as valuable down the road as some of the FAs we are targeting – especially the kid of Texas if he comes out after his frosh year – and Walls.
Go Knicks tonight!
haha lol, myles did you seriously just call brook lopez soft. the kid is an absolute BEAST. yeah, he has flaws such as his rebounding ability, but so does EVERY OTHER SECOND YEAR PLAYER. come on man, to hate on a future all star center just to help get rid of our own miseries is ridiculous. brook lopez is a stud….. how the hell can u compare him to big z. not even close….. not even close. shame on you for hating on brook., the kid plays with so much heart and emotion and is very gifted, clearly.
The Nets as the Knicks have been playing as well as their talent will allow. Like in New Orleans Hornets, since management cannot change the players it changes the coach. Some of our fans will say, Frank like D’Antoni stopped teaching defense and it cost him his job. I believe he taught defense every day but his players weren’t good enough to turn all that teaching into wins. When will we learn that it is not about the coach, it is all about what the players are capable of?? Your thoughts
I’m not sure who the Nets should Hire but whoever it is better get ready to stay in NJ for at least another year or more. I’m More Concerned with the Knicks situation. But Mark Jackson Would be a Great choice
The Knicks can easily be 0-16. We barely beat the Nets. The Nets only suited up 8 guys and were still playing well until the 4th qtr of each game. We should switch coaches. I think DAntoni’s system would actually work with the talent they have in Jersey. The only problem is D’Antoni will have brook Lopez on the bench. He would not dare to start a center at the center position. Lawrence Frank is not the reason why they are 0-16.
A coach can’t overcome a lack of talent and the wrong players to fit into their system. Just like with Dantoni, the Nets record is not on Frank, its on the complete lack of any talent outside of Lopez, Harris, and CDR. Most of the great coaches like Phil Jackson and Jerry Sloan install systems and then it is up to the gm to find players to fit into that system. For both the Knicks and the Nets, who are rebuilding in the proper way, there simply are not enough talented players and not enough players that fit well into the respective coaches systems. Coaching is tough without talent, and I definitely think Frank will find another job in the future and catch on somewhere else.
“A coach can’t overcome a lack of talent and the wrong players to fit into their system.”
This isn’t necessarily directed at you ds2488, but there were a lot of people on this blog who said before the season started that this team would surprise and they would challenge for as high as the 6th seed in the conference (can you tell I wasn’t among this group?), the players had a year together and the familiarity with the system would pay huge unexpected dividends, now all of a sudden less than 20 games into the season the tune has changed to “how can we expect _’antoni to win with this terrible group of players” that is a huge 180 degree turn from the original line of thought going into the season.
A lot of people here were happy with this group and satisfied with the moves (or lack thereof) Walshie made during the offseason. From trading Quentin for Darko, drafting one of the top 3 bigs in a POINT GUARD heavy draft to even passing on Sessions when that was desperate position of need, all these maneuvers were heralded as savvy, patient and shrewd. What happened?
The roster hasn’t changed at all since training camp, yet now all I hear about is “we don’t have the horses”, “_’antoni can only do so much”, “I feel sorry for _’antoni” blah blah blah blah.
The coach can’t hold the players accountable and apparently the fans can’t/won’t hold the coach or GM accountable either.
I know.
Every player on this roster has at one time or another been touted as an ideal player for the “D’Antoni System”.,
We’ve heard about Lee being the type of 5 that Coach craves less the outside shot.
Chandler was supposed to be Marion and Duhon was hand picked for this system.
I think the only thing that has been worse for Duhon is his outside shooting. His other play is very similar to last year and on a PER basis his 4 years in Chicago.
Harrington and Hughes were thought to be the types of players to thrive in this system and Nate was tailor made. Even Milicic was mentioned as a good “D’Antoni type player”
Now they all suck.
No shots ds.. it’s not just you we are hearing this from.
I think Brook Lopez and the 2010 lottery pick (John Wall, Derrick Favors or Ed Davis) are the only GEMS. Devin Harris and Terrence Williams are overrated in my opinion, even though I’d love to see them wearing a Knicks uniform (obviously).
The Nets are more enticing talent-wise, but I think the 2010 first round draft pick makes the difference. They will look good with a couple of free agent signings next season though.
harris is an all star, hes coming off an injury give him time. to call him overrated is absurd. he is still very young and is obviousally still going to get better. the nets have the potential to contend next year big time. realistically they can have three all stars in their starting lineup if they can sign bosh. harris, lopez (future all star) and bosh….. the nets look good and i hate to admit it but they look real damn good, like a dynasty in the making with next years pick and the most free cap room. they can overpay for bosh or joe johnson, bc they have the room to do so if they cant entice them to go to nj otherwise.
To each his own, YES he’s a really good player but I think he’s overrated.
get Heri to coach the Nets. He knows everything.
he knew for sure that Rubio was coming to the Knicks before the draft.
he knew for a fact that Cotto would knock out Pacquiao. lol
seriously, B. Scott is probably a good choice. i read that Lakers are interested in possibly have Scott join the coaching staff and may be groomed to succeed the Big Triangle.
“seriously, B. Scott is probably a good choice. i read that Lakers are interested in possibly have Scott join the coaching staff and may be groomed to succeed the Big Triangle.”
Ahhhh, that would be a class move by a class organization. Tapping a former player to join the coaching staff and carry on the legacy. Wish the Knicks organization would have that kind of class. But hey, the Knicks do have Herb.
smh…
I know enough not to be a sick puppy towards a fellow blogger.
I am nto going to get into the argument too heavily here, but Devin Harris is the best player in the city. Brook Lopez is one of the best centers in the league (top 10). CDR is a player. T Williams and Courtney Lee are moderate role players. Tack on a potential #1 pick and an elite free agent, not to mention an elite head coach, and the Nets can be pretty good.
Never thought I could say this about a GM of a 0-16 team, but Rod Thorn is a genius. Period.
Yeah he is great. I have no doubt that they are a 40 win team next season. Unless Thorn gets restrictions on the money he can spend of course.
Ehhh…. maybe not 40 come to think of it… not willing to guarantee that quite yet…
read all this and WOW…is all i have to say.
SMH.
