Report: Ewing To NJ?

by Ben Kopelman on November 30th, 2009 at 12:17 pm

Knick legend Patrick Ewing has not been contacted by anybody in Jersey’s front office, but he told the Post that he would welcome the opportunity to lead the young Nets back to respectability.

“Knicks legend Patrick Ewing, an NBA assistant coach for the past seven seasons, told The Post yesterday he would love to coach the Nets and hopes to be considered whenever they decide to fill the position permanently.

“Of course,” Ewing said after his Magic beat the Knicks, 114-102, at the Garden. “I would be back home. I still live in New Jersey. I just want an opportunity. Yes, I would love to coach the Nets.”

My gut reaction to this is “who cares, I hope the guy gets it.”  But the truth of the matter is, as much as I love Ewing and want him to succeed no matter where he goes, I would be bitter if he were traipsing the sidelines out in East Rutherford.

Ewing will always be a Knick to me, and I continue to hold out hope that one day he will triumphantly return to the Garden and be a part of a NY championship.

Just another pipe dream?  Maybe so.

Such is the life of a Knicks fan these days…

  • DatNewYorker

It would be a smart move. Brook Lopez could benefit from this. I hope he gets the job. I wish the Knicks gave Ewing his first shot.

  • HaS

The Knicks wouldn’t even give him his first interview for a head coaching job.

F*** this organization! Go for it Pat I hope he does get it! Or at least an interview.

  • Knicks4life

This Nets team is pretty bad though. I would prefer Ewing get his shot with a better team that has a more stable situation but hey if they draft John Wall and move Devin Harris for a legit Power forward to play next to Brook they could make some noise next year.

I know Ewing can coach big men. Can he coach a whole team though?

  • HaS

    They’ve got cap room too.

  • Ben Kopelman

devin harris and b lopez are two pretty nice building blocks if you can throw in a big FA this summer…

more than we have on a rebuilding roster…

  • Knicks4life

I think the Nets would be wise to save some of their cap room for the summer of 2011. They have such a shaky ownership situation I doubt they make any moves or use any of their cap space this summer anyway.

They would be wise to use the 2010-2011 season to trade their pretty good young talent for some established veterans. While I hate the Nets if Patrick went there I would root for them (still Knicks4Life though). So if they do get John Wall in the 2010 draft maybe Devin Harris and their 2011 protected pick for Josh Smith if Atlanta implodes like we all know they will? Or scratch the pick and do Harris for Al Holford? Bibby’s really slowing down so it would be a good fit for both teams.

haha this has nothing to do with anything but it is hilarious….

    via knicks.com

The Knicks’ fell just short to an elite NBA team for the second consecutive game Sunday night as they were defeated 114-102 by the Magic at home. Chris Duhon had another fine game running the point for New York while Nate Robinson finished with 24 points, scoring 22 in the fourth quarter.

are they kidding…. chris duhon had another fine game, what do they consider fell just short….. we lost by 12. and every time you try to enter the website they try to sell you tickets saying as LOW as 40.00…. HA 40 dollars to wacth a team with 3 measley wins…….. what a joke this organizaion is right nowm what a freaking joke. i watch bc im a die hard and i love gallinari, other than that what a joke and disgrace to ground that ewing, clyde, spree, etc. played on.

clyde: the garden is no longer is a hostile enviornment. opposing teams no longer fear coming into the garden…… broke my freakin heart but god it is soooo true.

  • fuhry

Wouldn’t it be cool if Ewing turned out to be a great head coach? Even cooler if he coached the Knicks and they won a championship.

    *daydreams*

‘Gallo to the line, 22 seconds remain, Knicks up by 7. Gallinari.. swishes the first. Patrick Ewing, coach of the Knicks, seconds away from achieving as a coach the championship that eluded him as a player…. barking instructions to his team. Gallinari with the second foul shot… good. Knicks by nine! 20 seconds to go.

Kobe up the court… perhaps his last game as a Laker… pulls up and launches a 3 from the wing… back iron! Long rebound… secured by Douglas! Douglas dribbles across half court… and that should do it.! The seconds ticking down… and the New York Knicks… have reached the promised land!

Securing their first championship since 1973 in five games over the Lakers…. Their multifaceted attack and defensive intensity proved too much for a hobbled Kobe Bryant and the Lakers….

Patrick Ewing, embracing his team at midcourt… known for his scowl, also known for one of the widest smiles in the NBA… Now a little wider and a little brighter. The demons… have been excercised. Patrick Ewing – and the Knicks – are champions.’

OK. Ahem. Back to your regularly scheduled disappointing reality.

  • The_Guy

I have an even better, slightly more realistic story than yours Fuhry.

    AP

“Message board contributor, The Guy, is in the hospital right now recovering from dehydration after an all night sex marathon with Jessica Biel, Salma Hayek, Gisele Bundchen, and Megan Fox.

Eyewitnesses say that the ladies involved actually got into a fist fight over who was going to sleep with him first. They only finally stopped brawling when Guy threatened to leave the room and put his clothes back on.

    Developing…”

  • Magik_Trick

I would be pissed…I want him to coach, but not against the team thats playing right next door to us…..what if he becomes a legendary coach? then what? We would of passed on him for D’Antoni, and he’ll be killing us 5 times a year…

  • JASONHAYES

I swear this is the worst time for the Knicks to have a really bad season. With no Draft pick, no real solid player as a cornerstone, and 2010 free agency appraching. Things don’t look good my fellow Knick fans. We will be in basketball purgatory for another decade if things dont get done. With the Knicks looking towards another losing season, there’s only two ways the knicks can make good out of a bad situation.

A.) Move Eddy Curry or Jeffries contract off the books. If that means move Gallo, well then bye bye ROOSTER.

B.) The Knicks must acquire a first round draft pick somehow. Somewhere in the 17 to 23 range would be a success.

I like you Donnie, and I haven’t once bashed you on this site yet, BUT GET OFF YOUR ASS, AND START GETTING THINGS DONE OR YOU TOO WILL SUFFER THE SAME FATE AND REPUTATION AS ISIAH THOMAS.

  • illsun

a great player does not a great coach make.

  • illsun

Can ewing really coach bigmen ?

has dwight howard really improved because of Ewing?
hows dwights shot coming along ?

  • CircleLimit4

I think he’ll take a head coaching job anywhere, that’s what he wants to be. Patrick Ewing was a great player but he is still proving himself as a coach, he’s not above passing on head gigs, even the Nets.I hope Ewing gets the gig, it looks like he’s earned it.. Besides, The Nets will eventually get their first W, they won’t go 0-36. It’s not going to get worse. And maybe it will convince Mark Jackson to get an assistant coaching job.

  • itzyung1

You just can’t say hurry up and make a deal then POOF the deal happens.
I wonder if The Nets would trade Devin Harris For David Lee and Wilson Chandler.

  • Mucha

A Lopez/Ewing player/coach duo would be interesting, but Dwight Howard’s game doesn’t impress me from a pure basketball standpoint. He’s a beast obviously but he’s still raw.

The Knicks need to hire Oakley to mentor Jordan Hill.

  • Magik_Trick

a little off topic…but can someone confirm that we have TWO 2nd round picks in 2010?

  • Dave the Rave

DW is not on his ass doing nothing. He did plenty and did well to clear out about 6 bad contracts so that he can maneuver next summer, and spending $3M to draft Douglas shows he is aggressive and creative. Patience……there is not much he can do now, but when the trade deadline draws near he should be able to do something. Here’s wishing good riddance to Jefferies.

  • Dave the Rave

Amen to that. Seems that most teams have assistant coaches who are nobodies.

  • The_Guy

You guys crack me up with these wack deals. David Lee is a free agent in a few months. WHY ON EARTH WOULD A TEAM TRADE FOR HIM KNOWING HE’S GOING TO LEAVE?

And why on earth would they give up an All Star in return for a guy who’s a free agent in return? And why is it that in every wacky hypothetical trade scenario Wilson Chandler can get us back a star?

Does anyone really believe he has that much value around the league? So let me get this straight, Wilson Chandler can get us a top 5 pick, Monta Ellis, and now Devin Harris? Damn why not just offer him to the Lakers for Kobe?

They’d be stupid to say no to a stud like Chandler.

  • The_Guy

DW is doing nothing. He got rid of those contracts, which is great, but he also signed Chris Duhon which was a bust, passed on Brook Lopez, passed on Eric Gordon, passed on Brandon Jennings, passed on Ty Lawson, passed on signing Jamaal Tinsley.

What makes you guys think he’s going to get it right with the 2 2nd rounders he has in 2010? Because he drafted Gallinari? The same Gallinari who missed all but 28 games last year with a bad back?

  • BiggieSmalls

we have Our second round pick and the more favorable of Denver’s 2010 2nd round pick and the L.A. Clippers’ own 2010 2nd round pick.

    Most probably the Clippers

We do not have a 2011 2nd Rounder which goes to the Lakers..

The Nets have their own and Dallas’ first rounder.

  • HaS

WTF does that mean? Where in my comment did I declare Ewing a “great coach”? FOH

The man has experience as an assistant for 3 franchises and that doesn’t earn him an interview with the franchise he carried on his back for 14 years?

Didn’t Mark Jackson get an interview? He has 0 coaching experience at all and yet Walshie considered him heavily. Like I said f*** this franchise man, as long as Dolan is in charge they’ll lack the class to match it’s history.

  • steiker9

Did you guys see how Jamal Tinsley who hasn’t played basketball
in two years is already playing 100 times better than Duhon since he signed
with Memphis. This makes me want to pull my hair out.
Thanks Donnie for passing on AI, Jason Williams and Tinsley and
making us look like fools by starting the worst PG in the league.

  • Bob go knicks

i dont think donnie gives a shit,he was prolly ready to retire when DAVID STERN…….errr i mean THE KNICKS called him to take the GM job

  • The_Guy

@ steiker9 – Preach on my brother! Knicks passed on Brandon Jennings and Ty Lawson in the draft, and Jason Williams (who according to Alan Hahn the Knicks said he looked a step slow in a workout) and Jamaal Tinsley in free agency. And now look. All these guys are helping their teams win.

The Knicks passed on all of them.

I have serious doubts about Donnie Walsh’s talent evaluation skills.

  • The_Guy

I’m almost glad we don’t have a pick in next year’s draft. We would’ve found a a way to screw it up.

  • Dave the Rave

ok, I’ll be pessimistic like you.

Name a better GM who can replace him.

  • HaS

C’mon man be patient. Walsh knows what he’s doing. He didn’t have a feel for those players’ games.

    “In Donnie I Trust”

  • HaS

Signing Jason Williams, Jamaal Tinsley or Allen Iverson to one year deals would have taken minutes from our soon to be star players and would have adversely affected the 2010 plan.

    “In Donnie I Trust”

  • HaS

There is no better GM in the world, Walsh invented modern General Managing in the NBA as we know it today. He was cheated out of multiple championships while in Indiana. You’ll see when he gets Executive of the Year the next 5 years in a row.

    “In Donnie I Trust”

  • The_Guy

LMAO exactly. God forbid Chris Duhon and Jared Jeffries play less minutes.

  • HaS

You guys are so ungrateful! Walsh delayed his retirement to grace New York with his return and bring integrity and respectability to the Knick organization. He’s gotten 3 steals in the draft in his short tenure here. Trust me Jordan Hill will show he’s just as good if not better than Blake Griffin once he beats Jeffries and Lee out for minutes in the rotation. Lee was supposed to be on the All-Star team last year, he’s going to be tough to beat out of the lineup. Douglas is better than Brandon Jennings, Ty Lawson and Jrue Holiday put together. He just needs to get some time on the floor and learn the point guard position, Gallinari is going to be 10x better than Beasley and Miami is going to be kicking themselves for not taking him 1st overall by next year this time.

    Be patient fans!

I obviously love Patrick Ewing, and always have rooted for him.

However, I don’t want him to get a coaching job in the New York metropolitan area. This potential situation can’t help but remind me of the Willis Reed situation–he wasn’t as successful in coaching/GMing in stints with the Knicks and Nets as he was as a player and his legacy took a bit of a hit for it.

I don’t want something like that to happen to Ewing, who already has a slightly shaky reputation because of his icy relationship with the media and his failure to lead the Knicks to a championship. If he fails as a coach in New York’s backyard….Ewing will lose a lot of credibility.

And just because so many NBA legends have failed at coaching, I have to assume that there’s a decent chance of Ewing struggling early on his coaching career–especially in a bad situation like Nets have (unless they make a big free agency splash…but there are no guarantees).

That’s why if Ewing does get a job I’d hope it’s somewhere far away from here… like Minnesota or Sacramento or somewhere like that.

  • itzyung1

People Like You Crack Me Up. Like You Know What Other GM’s are thinking just because all you can do is point out our players flaws.
When Did I ever say that deal would work anyway it was a question?
Dont take your frustration out on me or other optimistic fans.

  • The_Guy

Don’t get offended. It’s one thing to be optimistic, it’s another to have common sense. Why not THINK before you throw out a wild unrealistic trade scenario? You know Lee is a FA. Why would a team trade their All Star for him, if they know in a few months they can sign him outright?

And besides this blog have you ever heard a single other report about a team being interested in Wilson Chandler? Apparently Chandler must be an MVP candidate if he can get so much in return. The dude plays well every 2-3 games. He has a low basketball IQ. He’s not really good at any one thing. He’s ok at a lot of things.

    Come on dude.

  • The_Guy

Kiki Van Deweghe would be a nice replacement. Billy King. Chris Mullin. Guys who know how to draft for one.

  • Mucha

    No layups!
