UPDATE: Knicks Trying to land Thomas without Dealing Al
By Tommy Dee - Dec 5, 2009 2:10 pm

Via Chicago Tribune (Dec 3rd)

“…The Bulls have held discussions about trading Tyrus Thomas to the Knicks, according to a league source.

Yahoo! Sports first reported the talks, which, for now, have centered upon Thomas and the expiring contract of Jerome James for the $10 million expiring contract of Al Harrington. The Knicks are trying to keep Harrington and make the deal work with other players, the league source said.

The Bulls long have admired Harrington’s game. And trading Thomas would preclude the Bulls from making the decision of whether or not to place an approximately $13 million salary cap hold on his services at a time when they might be trying to optimize salary cap space for the 2010 free agent class.

Via Hoopshype

Ric Bucher: On Al Harrington for Jerome James/Ty Thomas rumor: talked to sources w/both teams. Told that it is not being discussed. Twitter.com

Two league sources told the Tribune the Bulls have had discussions with other teams regarding Thomas as well. There’s no guarantee Thomas will be dealt, but the larger story is the Bulls’ acknowledgment of their offensive struggles. Al Harrington, involved in the Knicks’ talks, is a much more accomplished scorer (19.9 points per game) than Thomas (8.3). The Bulls have languished near the bottom of many offensive categories all season. “I did say something how I’ve always liked (Thomas),” Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni told New York reporters. “I think Tyrus is a good player, but I think Al’s a good player.” Chicago Tribune

There was a very detailed story on Yahoo.com yesterday about the Bulls having discussions with the Knicks about some form of a Tyrus Thomas and Jerome James for Al Harrington trade. The salaries match and a source confirmed that such discussions have taken place. But like many trade rumors, this one had already fizzled by the time news leaked out. There has been a high volume of trade talk around the league because so many teams are losing money and anxious to unload large contracts, I’m told. But there was nothing cooking between the Bulls and Knicks as of Friday morning. Arlington Heights Daily Herald

dude, there is not a trade that the knicks can present to get the number one pick in the draft this year. We couldn’t even move up 3 spots last year with the players we had and the #8 pick to swap last summer.

There is a better chance we end up with rubio than wall, and there isn’t much chance of that either.

We can only hope Donnie uses the 2nd round picks wisely and gets us a steal. I think Toney Douglas was a great pick, so I have some hope with what he can do back there.

Thomas has a 13 million cap hold??? That would kill our chances at a max contract – and could even hurt chances of getting Rudy Gay (though if he is looking for 10-12 million – maybe we could pull that off).

Comment by traps9
2009-12-05 14:29:54

Cap hold – until he’s offered the QO (or whatever more they want to) or renounced. No big deal.

2009-12-05 15:05:43

If we didnt offer Sessions a contract because of a $4 million hit to 2010, why on earth would we pick up Ty Thomas’s $6.2 qualifying offer this summer and take $2.2 more off the cap for 2010 than the Sessions deal?

If we did not spend $4 million on a position that we actually needed (pg) why on earth would we spend $6.2 million for yet another forward in 2010?

It just doesn’t make any sense to me

Comment by itzyung1
2009-12-05 15:09:06

Because we can hold onto Ty Thomas’s QO until all the Free Agency madness is over. With Sessions it is automatically counted..

Comment by Tommy Dee
2009-12-05 15:16:48

correct.

and i guess they didn’t love sessions as much as fans and media did…

Comment by Section 40
2009-12-05 17:14:52

Sorry, I guess I’m a bit ignorant about QOs.

By what date do the knicks have to offer a RFA the QO? Is it before or after July 1st? I assumed that it was before July 1st. In that case, we would be taking the risk that he accepts the offer and we are stuck with the $6.2 million hit, possibly before we even sign anyone.

If we can hold onto it, with no risk that he can take it and no hit to the salary cap as part of a cap hold situation sign everyone and then decide on Ty Thomas…its a no brainer…but that doesn’t sound right to me.

I wasn’t that excited about Sessions last summer (I feel the same way about Ty Thomas now), but at least it was a position that we needed to fill. The one position we dont need is yet another forward. We drafted forwards back to back in the lottery the last two years.

Unless they take JJ or Curry back, trading for him makes no sense to me.

Comment by traps9
2009-12-05 20:59:57

And because Ty Thomas could be the 5 of the future for this team (of course, perhaps not, too). It’s a risk-free flier, IMO

Comment by Section 40
2009-12-05 21:53:36

That is why they drafted Jordan Hill. I’d rather go with Hill and gamble with a much better contract. Who knows if either of these guys can really do it.

I mean you have to know that the cap hold is there until the team decides to offer the qo or other offer – and the Knicks have to figure what to do w/ the the potential max FAs out there first – but the cap hold prevents them – it’s a catch 22 – you cannot get around the cap hold until Thomas is resolved – and you cannot resolve Thomas until you figure what you are doing with the max potential FA – and why would we sign Thomas to qo offer of what – 2 million more than Sessions – when pg is more of a need than forward – you have to know that – I mean . . . .

Comment by Tommy Dee
2009-12-05 15:45:41

i misread itzyung above…there is no hold, obviously, and no harm in making this deal bc they can renounce july 1.

your point, the way i originally read it, was predicated on the knicks keeping thomas…

i’m not sure that’s the case…they can come back to him later.

it’s a no brainer to me that they renounce him july 1.

wouldn’t you figure that to be the case??

Comment by Tommy Dee
2009-12-05 15:47:24

and obviously the shrinking cap plus the fact that sessions can’t shoot from distance wasn’t worth dipping into 2010…

are we still talking about sessions at 4 million per??

Neither can shoot, so let’s not get careless here. Pick your 5 and try to get your 3 (James Johnson?), or just get your 5 and move on.

Talks did take place, but a trade agreement wasn’t reached. It sounds like the ground work has been finished in what may result in a trade at a later date. It won’t be Harrington for Ty. It be no good for us.

Harrington for Ty would kill any opportunity of making the playoffs this season. It would hurt the teams continuity while deflating the offense. Biggie, I believed, began waving the white flag when this trade rumor surfaced. Thank god it didn’t happen. If it did, we’d be playing for the future and completely destroying the present season. Ty isn’t that valuable.

observation:

I may be wrong but it seems there have been NO projected,
conjectured trade rumors during the Walsh era that have been true or have happened. All of Walsh’s trades have taken us by surprise.

I do believe that nearly everyone on the knick roster is available in the right
trade, Ty Thomas again for Al H sounded like a rumor.

As for the prospect of Jerome James returning, I would not mind
if it was to make good on his promise to EAT Nate Robinson.

2009-12-05 15:29:15

If the Knicks want to bring Tyrus Thomas – but not for Al Harrington – then what are they hoping for? Obviously Al Harrington’s departure would hurt us from a pure basketball standpoint but we already have a logjam at the 3/4 spot.

Gallinari, Harrington, Jeffries, Chandler PLUS Tyrus Thomas doesn’t make sense.

The Knicks will have to A. “Get rid” of Harrington or B. Deal Jared Jeffries and X to the Houston Rockets or C. Deal Wilson Chandler for another young player like Bayless if they want to get Tyrus Thomas.

Obviously, Walsh is working at something else, something that won’t be leaked. This trade talk was true, but so was the leak. There’s much trade wind talk taking place. I know Minnesota could use an athletic 3, like a Chandler or Ty.

Trade Harrington for Thomas and this team will win 5-10 more games this year max. Thomas would be a “bust” if he did not soon become a 35-minute a night major power forward. Worth the gamble? Who knows?

This is for the blogger who said D’A “absolutely refuses to teach defense”:

From Berman today:

As for Robinson, D’Antoni even played Marcus Landry for five minutes instead of the 5-foot, 7½-inch guard. Robinson and D’Antoni met yesterday afternoon and D’Antoni told him he felt rookie Toney Douglas gave them the better chance to win for now. Douglas had a big offensive-rebound putback and scored six points on 3 of 5 shooting in 12 minutes.

“We need energy, defense and intense play every possession,” D’Antoni said, explaining his decision.

Donnie is putting it out there that he doesn’t want to trade AL so the Bulls would maybe throw in their 1st round pick. If they don’t want to give us their pick then they have to take Jeffries and Nate and send us Thomas and James. It’s really that simple from our (Knicks) POV. Any other offer is falling on deaf ears.

I also want to address the idiocy that was spoken on the last thread about the Nets. I’m going to say this once…..they are not a threat to steal ANY FREE AGENTS FROM US!!

They have Brook Lopez who will be solid and that’s it.
Devin Harris was a good pg last year but that injury really messed him up. He won’t be an all star this year. Terrence Williams won’t make anybody think twice about playing in the swamp. He’s just like Nate…..wasn’t Williams in the car with Nate when he got arrested this summer? Birds of a feather………..
CDR has potential but not enough. He doesn’t have the it factor.

They are a team that is in more ruin than us. Their ownership is going through a change….they don’t have a coach……their bringing in a foreign owner (Russian at that)…….they had the worst start in NBA history……they won’t play in BK till 2012 at the earliest……is it a coincidence that J Kidd came out and pretty much trashed the Nets dreams of signing a max player? And I quote…..”The Nets don’t care about basketball, their all about real estate.”……

Meanwhile we have a player in Gallo that everybody knows will be a better player than everyone on the Nets…..We have if not the most respected coach he’s def top 3 in the league….We have of course MSG and the bright lights of NYC…..the most important thing is we’ll have the $$$ to sign a max and enough to MAYBE sign a player for close to 9 million. That’s if we don’t trade Jeffries. If we can trade JJ than that opens up a brand new bag of opportunities. Once Donnie trades JJ it’ll be check. If he can trade Curry……it’s checkmate.

Al has his high points and his low points. Al can score in bunches and help the team which kind of leaves everyone standing around and watching or he can shoot you out of a game real fast. On this team with our goal of obtaining one max player and hopefully a sidekick, while furthering the development of Gallo, TD and Hill Al wont have the minutes and or touches next year. But on the Bulls a team in dire need of offense he can become an All Star becuase who else is gonna start over him or score. Rose will be passing the ball to him basically. And Al I know would love to be the man even tho he loves NY on the Bulls.
