“…Before we talk about today’s game, I just wanted to point a few things out about the Nets’ first win.  Up until Friday, Brook Lopez was averaging 14.8 shots per game.  Against the Bobcats, Brook got 22 shots.  One was from 17 feet, one was from 11, and the rest were inside the paint.  As I noted on Thursday, co-coach Del Harris has been blessed with terrific centers throughout his coaching career, and he knows how to get them shots in the paint, and in bulk.  Looks like that is exactly what he has planned for Brook.  Also, how about Courtney Lee huh?  He is still doing all of the little things (4 rebounds, 3 steals, and a block), but he finally coupled it with a good shooting night.  When he can do that, he will have a big-time impact on the game (this sure sounds familiar).  Granted, it is only one game, but I think we can expect more games like these in the future.

To today’s game.  Last time the Nets played the Knicks, they kind of had what looked to be a good offensive game.  The problem though is that they played right into the Knicks’ hands.  They took a lot of quick shots, took too many threes, and they got into a track-meet with the Knicks.  That is the only way that team can win.  Also, the Nets rotated poorly and gave up a good amount of wide-open threes.  Onto the match-ups:

Devin Harris vs. Chris Duhon

What I really like about Devin Harris’ game is that despite poor shooting performances that happen from time to time, he still can score, because he just knows how to get into the lane and draw contact.  Sure he was only 2-14, but he got to the line 13 times, hitting on 11 of those attempts.  Oh and he put up 8 assists with only 1 turnover.  Today should be no different, Harris is much quicker than Duhon, so you can expect to get him into the lane with ease.

Advantage:  Devin Harris

Courtney Lee vs. Wilson Chandler

Courtney Lee looks to be 100% now, but he is going to have his hands full with Chandler.  Chandler has great the size of a forward and the skills of a guard.  It is going to be interesting to see if Lee can use his quickness to his advantage to get around Chandler so he can attack the basket.

Advantage:  Push…more”

  • Adam L

    Two things:

First, it is absurd to say CDR and Al Harrington are a push right now. C’mon.

Second, if I remember correctly, last time we played the Nets, we got Brook into early foul trouble by guarding Eddy. Wasn’t that the Nets? If that is the case, we’re in trouble today, because Lopez will just devour Lee. Any chance we see Darko? I doubt it.

Where’s Malik Rose when you need him?

  • Bob go knicks

    wheres gallo/?

  • Magik_Trick

    that article was so bias…

Wilson Chandler is way better than C. Lee, thats not a ‘push’

and CDR is DEFINITELY not better than Al Harrington

  • jaknicksfan

I Agree chandler has been playing good for a few games and courtney had 1 gd game. And Harrington is Better than Cdr right now. And I thought Gallo was Better why isn’t he Starting?

  • Jay2010

Jeffries playing hard in the 1st.. Hope Portland is watching. Duhon stinking it up.

  • Myles A. Mills

LoL at CDR having the edge on Al Harrington. In what world?

  • Mucha

    Douglas-Roberts better than Harrington?

    Joke of the week.

The “Chandler has (…) the skills of a guard” comment gets the silver medal.

The writer doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

CDR looked pretty good there blocking Gallo – and actually playing in this game today.

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

Just not a good quarter – b/c no real defense – no interior defense.

  • Jay2010

CDR better then Al? Thats a joke rt? Gallo needs to do something with the ball. He can’t just pass it everytime he gets it and there is a defender on him. He’s not even dribbling or trying to create for himself.

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

Jefferies – terrible – terrible – terrible layup – and that is why he has no trade value – that and he is not good. That also might be impacting any trades. May need to add in Hill w/ Jefferies to trade him.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

damm jeffries just made me laugh
i thought after that spin it was going in
that shit was a BIG BRICK.
    lmao..

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

first of all cdr has retarded legs ok
    he is a bolegged dude
he is an ok player on a team that sucks..

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

Nets starting to runaway here – 7 point lead???? Perhaps if the Knicks defense does not improve. And again, the Nets have their lottery pick and we do not – that’s all that really comes out of this game today.

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

    and the turnovers continue

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

Potential 10 point lead if Harris finished the 3 point play

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

Gallo looks awkward driving to the basket

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

It is falling apart here – in a hurry – this would be a bad setback – agree w/ Walt.

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

Terrible turnover by Chandler – awful pass.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

can u say the beginning of a blowout..

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

I don’t know – but Lopez did not look “soft” there rejecting Lee.

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

    beginning of a blowout

  • Mucha

Wow down by double figures. Against the New Jersey Nets.

    It’s a lay-up party!

Charles Oakley is rolling over in his grave.

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

Harris to Lopez – better than anything we have.

  • Mucha

It was not a tough block. He’s just ouplaying D Lee.

  • Mucha

We have “Duhon to Jeffries” though

  • Jay2010

So lets ask the question.. 2008 Draft.. Gallo or Lopez??? I say LOPEZ! He’s definelty one of the best centers in the East behind Howard.

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

Sorry – Gallo will be a nice 3 option down the line – but he is not a 1 or 1A or even a 2nd option. If we had Joe Johnson, Rudy Gay, and Gallo as the nucleus going forward – Gallo is the third option.

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

I would go Lopez – but Lopez would not fit Mike D’s kind of basketball. But yeah – I would go Lopez or even Eric Gordon. After those two – I would pick Gallo.

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

You’re right – I stand corrected (really shaking my head and tearing up a little)

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

A few weeks ago – certain bloggers said that Lee can outplay Lopez – just countering those assertions.

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

Great illegal screen Jefferies – good job. Portland just hung up on Donnie.

  • Mucha

    He’s 21 years old.

I think he’ll be a really good second option in his prime – maybe a 1A type of player if he reaches his potential but I’m not holding my breath. I think he’ll be a great second option.

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

I just don’t see – especially if we want to become a championship team. Think Bulls: He’s more Pippen or is he more Kukoc. I put him the later category. He may be a second option on a nice 54 win team that makes it to the second round – but I thought we were talking about championships here – championships.

  • Jay2010

I agree. You get a lot more consistenecy and defense with Lopez. Plus he doesnt have any injuries like Gallo. I think Gallo would be a great 3rd option, but Lopez is the 1st option on the Nets that has a lot of young talent despite the record.

Anyone think Nate will see the light of day today? I won’t be surprised if we start getting blown out that there will be a “we want Nate” chant. Especially since there is so many kids in the audience. If Dantoni doesnt play Nate against the Nets, who knows when he will play him again.

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

Great job there – cut it 6 – maybe go into the locker room feeling that bad – and then let jumper from the corner w/ .1 secs left – putting an exclamation point on terrible defensive effort in the first half. Just awful defense. I think the NBA is going to add seven points to the Nets’ lead right at the start of the 3rd quarter in anticipation of either future Devin Harris layups or CDR’s buckets and jumper.

  • Mucha

    It’s a tough question.

I think I keep Gallinari if God tells me that his career won’t be plagued by injuries. I think Gallo has a higher ceiling, but Lopez is a better basketball player right now. He’s a flat-out stud, period.

Nobody really wanted Lopez on draft night though, let’s be honest. I think the real discussion is Gallinari/Gordon.

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

He may still secretly fear that Nate will hit a three for the Nets today. Which would be one more than Duhon has entirely. Wow – Atlanta’s game was an aberration for Duhon.

  • LJohnson2k8

LOL Realist and Mucha yall are killing me here. Come on now we all heard all week before the Nets won a game finally that it would be an embarassment if the Knicks lose to the Nets and give them their 1st win. Well (smh) without Curry to clog the lane and use his weight to cause havoc on the athletic and light Net front line we got D Lee and JJ. So Brook is playing like we all thought he was (Thanks D Green) and knew he could play and Devin if I remember ate the Knicks up last year in MSG when he was healthy. I still think the Knicks will win but if it gets so bad that we have to go into a zone to stop the layup line then we have serious problems defensively becuase best believe after Al Harrington’s stab in the heart display in NJ the Nets want this game.

  • Mucha

Gallinari could be a legit second option.

Pippen isn’t a fair comparison, he’s one of the greatest players of all-time. He could have been a franchise player without Jordan, I mean he led the Bulls to a 55 win season in 1994. Let’s be serious.

If Gallinari reaches his potential he could have the same impact Gasol had on the Los Angeles Lakers, Ginobili on the San Antonio Spurs or Drexler on the Houston Rockets.

  • bockersORbriefs

just like J-Hill over BJ3 wasa mistake, so was Gallo over Lopez. Both Donnie/D’ant darfts …

Also Tommy, can you do a survey on what hurts the Knicks more:

    a) Nate’s antics while on the layu line & while he’s in a game or
    b) D’Ants decision to not play him at all.

Als, how can D’Ant NOT play Nate on Kids Day … he’s the most popular player with the youngins …D’an is such a scrooge!

  • The_Guy

Brook Lopez is a stud. Where’s Tommy Dee? CDR is making Gallo look like he’s 100 yrs old out there. As much as people like to talk about how unathletic Lopez is, and how he wouldn’t fit here, how many games did Mike D’Antoni win in Phoenix with Kurt Thomas in the middle?

Lopez is a helluva lot more athletic than Kurt. Plus he can give you 20 and 10, and 2 blocks a game. Gallo is a liability right now at the 3. Dude is too slow out there.

  • LJohnson2k8

Mucha I hear ya, Tommy said the same thing which was that Gallo would be a great 3rd option which goes to my point of why did we draft him so high when we had Lopez there. Gallo if he plays to his potential could be a Toni Kukoc if we have Lebron and hopefully a Gay or Johnson. Wishful thinking I know. Bockers you are right about the Nate situation but if you was the coach and Nate was playing and joking on the layup line and pounding his chest after he scores when we are getting blown would you play him just becuase he can score or its Kids Day?

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

Drexler – I would not dare put Gallo up in that category. Clyde was special.

Ginobli – you need a Parker also.

Gasol – 7 foot, 250 lbs power forward/center – I just do not see that in Gallo at all – notwithstanding whether he will even stay healthy and hold up over a whole season.

We’re talking about championships – and the second guy on championships – more often than not – needs to be elite in their own right – the Kevin McHale/Parrish, the Worthy/Jabbar towards the end, the Pippen, the Robinson, the Shaq, and Shaq part deux.

Unless you are constructing a completely diverse group like the Pistons of 89-90 and this decade predicated on defense and team – which we are not with Mike D.

There’s nothing wrong w/ Gallo being that nice third option w/ his sweet three point stroke – but there was a reason why guys like Westbrook, Mayo, and Rose went before him – more realistic number 2s down the road.

  • LJohnson2k8

Dont worry Guy, when Gallo gets his one dunk a game and hits the wide open 3′s you will have a Knicks mix with Gallo and how he is the next all star for the Knicks. (smh)

  • The_Guy

@ LJohnson2k8 – LMAO you’re right on the money my man.

  • LJohnson2k8

Did the fans chant we want Nate? Wow I thought I heard everything now at a Knick game lol

  • Mucha

    A liability?

  • LJohnson2k8

Thanks Guy but the bad thing is I dont want to be lol

  • Jay2010

I CALLED IT!!!!! HERE COMES THE ” WE WANT NATE” CHANT!!! I Knew it!

The last chant I remembered in the garden was the very famous “FIRE ISIAH”. LMAO

GET NATE IN THE GAME DUMTONI!!! THE FANS WANT IT! STOP BEING A CHILD, BOTH OF YOU GUYS!

  • bockersORbriefs

uh oh D’Ant … “we want Nate” starts ringing from the rafters … after the game MDA will say the fans are dumb, “why didn’t they chant for Darko or Landry?” …

  • bartnyk

I said it back at the begining at the season David Lee can’t cut it as a starting center hes a walking sign that says “Layups here” get Ty Thomas here to play some defense.

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

That’s funny. Keep it up – we need it in the second half of this game.

  • Jay2010

    LOL

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

CDR – 9/14 from field – reading the article again now to reevaluate.

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

    CDR unstoppable right now.

  • CircleLimit4

D’antoni is being stupid for not putting in Nate. I don’t want to give Nate any satisfaction but 1) we need the energy and 2) we need to rest Hughes and Duhon.

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

It’s a game of quickness and penetrating to the basket – good thing we drafted a 6’10″ player to sit on the bench and learn from Weber during warm up some post moves.

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

Atlanta Duhon makes an appearance for a moment w/ a three – Knicks up 3.

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

even when CDR misses it still looks good for him today

  • Mucha

Nobody wanted Brook Lopez before the 2008 draft, it’s just a fact. The discussion was about Eric Gordon, Jerryd Bayless and even Danilo Gallinari. Lopez has exceeded the expectations, period.

Gallinari had franchise potential, he was the best Euro prospect since Dirk Nowitzki. Some experts believed that he could have been the first pick in the draft (ahead of Derrick Rose and Michael Beasley). His back was the problem, not his talent.

I’m not holding my breath though, I think he’ll be a good second option a la Ginobili.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

    great 3rd Quarter

hughes give the team life in the 3rd..

  • LJohnson2k8

I hearyou Mucha but he cant create his own shot. He can pass nicely and shoot the open 3 but he offers little else. Knicks came back wow and the Nets are losing their composure. Lets see what happens.

  • Mucha

I’m not talking the prime Clyde Drexler OBVIOUSLY, but the 32 year-old Drexler who played for the Rockets. He was a second-option in Houston.

    I’m talking about championships too.

  • CircleLimit4

The zone is holding up for now. I’m glad D’antoni is tinkering with his D

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

Two Sundays later – now we foul (unintentionally though) at the end of a period w/ a foul to give.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

gallin rite now looks no more than a 3pt shooter.

mayb he grow or he gets stuck with this.

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

Well the scouts were wrong – this is now the best European prospect since Dirk:

    http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/Donatas-Motiejunas-1300/

Wish we had our lottery pick – oh do I wish we had our lottery pick. I hope IT loses all of his games in Florida this year as a head coach.

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

Can’t we send a game tape of today’s Larry Hughes performance to the Rockets: Hughes and Jefferies for T-Mac’s expiring. Oh I forgot – Jefferies is bad and makes 6.5 million plus next season.

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

26 points for CDR – reading the article above a third time now.

  • Mucha

    Chris Duhon posterizes Josh Boone!

    Wait… no.

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

I think the Boone rejection there of Duhon’s shot sums up Duhon’s season for me so far (excluding Atlanta – aberration??) – just never really had a shot.

  • JASONHAYES

Has Chris Duhon ever played one on one basketball before? The guy has no moves at all, he can not elude anyone. Does anyone have Marbury’s cell?

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

Jeffries takes charge on Harris early in the third, knicks go 30-16 to finish the quarter.

    just saying

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

Chandler makes up for some of his mistakes w/ his second efforts.

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

Jefferies sets an illegal screen and misses an easy lay up earlier – just saying – that third quarter also was more Hughes than Jefferies.

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

And if you talk this much about Jefferies – why does this blog more often than not advocate trading the guy? If he does so many things that do not show up in the boxscore – we should just keep to be part of 2010 and the future.

  • CircleLimit4

The kid only has half a season under his belt, I really don’t think we’ve seen everything he’s got. I think Gallo has the capability to eventually create a slashing component to his game. We’ve seen flashes of this. He has pretty good handle for a 6’10” guy and has nice long strides. The 3-ball will be his bread and butter, but I don’t think he’s going to be 1-dimensional. We’ll see.

  • bartnyk

Duhon has to setup Chandler hes suppose to tell Wilson get on the block if he doesn’t already know that if not he will take shots like that because he was out there for a while and didn’t get a touch.

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

And Jefferies just shoving off there and committing the offensive foul

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

    Nice steal by Gallo!

  • itzyung1

Simple because he aint no star and he is preventing us from signing one. Excuse The Incorrect English.

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

And the we want Nate chants reappeared

  • Jay2010

    Damn, Jeffries you suck!!!!

    WE WANT NATE!!!!

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

I wish the crowd would chant we want our lottery pick back – we want our lottery pick back

  • bartnyk

    Nates already traded LOL

  • itzyung1

Im mad we didn’t have a 2nd round pick that year!!!
Mario Chalmers or CDR would be great over here.

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

to be fair – Jefferies good job drawing the foul – bad job missing the 1st free throw

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

To be fair again – nice charge drawn there by Jefferies

  • CircleLimit4

What are you talking about? The only reason we talk about Jeffries is because we want to trade him. It’s possible to appreciate Jeffries drawing fouls/create turnovers and still want to trade him. Those are not mutually exclusive concepts.

  • LJohnson2k8

This is why I am not happy with these new Knick fans. We are winning the damn game and all they want to chant is we want Nate. Its not about winning with some of these fans its entertainment. Well if I want to see great entertainment they have the movies. With some of these fans its not about winning championships.

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

I don’t blame the young fans who just came to game this decade b/c they were too young for the 90s and before. It’s not their fault that they had Layden and IT as GMs running the team for most of this decade and Dolan as their owner. I blame management for allowing this culture to exist.

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

3 out of the last 4 – a positive from this – decreasing the odds that Utah winds up with a primo lottery selection in June.

  • bartnyk

If Donnie calls Kahn we may be able to buy a first rounder from Minny they have 3 I want Paul George.

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

What is there really to appreciate about Jefferies?? He has his good and his bad just like any basketball player – but to continually talk him up as if he started the run in the third quarter is going beyond that. There was not talk about Hughes in the original post under this thread now. What is there really to appreciate on a season that it primarily based on what will happen in 2010 – so no – in the “grand scheme” of things – they are not mutually exclusive concepts.

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

That would be great – we could try for Minny’s no. 20 – George the soph from Fresno – I would more than take that.

  • Scott

    Lee outplayed Lopez.

    Lee 9 rebounds, 24 pts, +14

    Lopez 6 rebounds, 19 pts, -10

  • bockersORbriefs

but don’t the fans (young or not) deserve more respect than D’ant gives them? This was a matinee game especially for the young fans & Nate is the player they relate to most … Scrooge D’ant has to stop making it seem like if Nate plays or is a liitle exubarent on the lay-up line, the team goes down in flames … He is absolutely over doing this benching. 3 games?? The league dosen’t suspend guys that long for throwing a punch!

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

yup he been traded they just waiting for the rite time to announce it..

  • itzyung1

I know what you are sayin. I actually heard someone say start Nate at PG….

  • CircleLimit4

Nobody is throwing a parade for Jeffries. I don’t know where you got the impression that he is continually talked up around here? JJ’s inadequacies and outrageous contract has been a huge talking point for years, it’s been done. Why are you so offended by commentary that took time to point out the few positives?

  • CircleLimit4
