Gallo Shunned from 3 Point Contest

By Tommy Dee on Dec 09, 2009, 3:50 pm

I don’t know if he chose not to compete, can’t imagine he would, but it appears Danilo Gallinari won’t be representing the Knicks during 3 Point shooting contest, All-Star weekend.

“…Van Gundy, whose three-point shot resembles that of a young Craig Hodges, was announced today as one of six Three-Point contestants during a press conference in Dallas. Van Gundy will be joined by defending champion Daequan Cook(notes) of the Heat, rookie Brandon Jennings(notes) of the Bucks, Matt Bonner(notes) of the Spurs, Anthony Morrow(notes) of the Warriors and Bulls coach Vinny Del Negro — if he isn’t fired by then…”

And no word if Gallo will be competing in the Rookie/Sophomore Challenge…

No big deal to me. That stuff stopped being cool for me years ago. I think it was the Cedric Ceballos “blindfold” dunk… Besides, of course Nate (“50 KENNY, 50!!”) and the Vince Carter show in 2000…that was sick.

Something else to keep an eye on. Terrence Williams is in all kinds of drama over in New Jersey. From being isolated from everyone to regretting getting drafted by the Nets and voicing it on twitter…

            Because Gallinari was injuried.

And he showed promise last season (great shooting touch, above-average ball handling skills, willingness to pass the ball etc).

T Will chucks but he can’t shoot, his percentages have always been terrible. The fact that he has a poor shot selection, EXTREMELY poor shooting percentages and a questionnable attitude is “repulsive”.

Larry Hughes is a chucker look at him now getting doubles on assists. Yea T Will may be one but he can change just like Larry has and he makes up for it on the defensive side and he rebounds well. His attitude isn’t that bad either .

            Dec 09, 2009, 10:37 pm at 10:37 pm #

Larry Hughes was just a freshman when he declared for the draft, Terrence Williams was a senior. And here’s the problem in my opinion, look at his percentages :

            Freshman : 39.1 FG%, 61.2 FT%
            Sophomore : 36.7 FG%, 60.4 FT%
            Junior : 41.1 FG%, 57.1 FT%
            Senior : 43.1 FG%, 58.1 FT%

Horrible. Why should I give him the benefit of the doubt regarding his shooting percentages considering the fact that he hasn’t shown any sign of improvement throughout his college career (his FT% got worse) – and then believe that he’ll be a “legit chucker”?

Listen, I hope that Williams will have a succesful career in the NBA. But he’s totally OVERRATED in my opinion and I don’t think he’ll ever become a good player!

Im not sayin he’ll be a shooter one day im just saying its not impossible for him to stop chucking.
Call me whatever but I can really see T Will becoming Iggy 2.0. Probably not better but at least at Iggy’s level.

Fans love to watch college basketball. They couldn’t monitor Gallinari’s developpment because he was playing in Italy and then barely played in his rookie season.

HaS: he has hit more Threes than anybody in the NBA, and is doing it at 45%. Trust me, plenty of people finally know all about him. They love him over on NBA TV.

not to mention, he’s being harassed on a nightly basis by whoever is guarding him; swatted at and denied the ball, as if he were LeBron or something.

    • Knicks4life
      Dec 09, 2009, 5:51 pm at 5:51 pm #

Um no, they are guarding him at the perimeter because their scouting reports say that he rarely puts in on the floor and does not have the lateral quickness to beat anyone.

Story is a fake, Van Gundy (?) but I would like to see Gallo in the 3 pt contest and on the sophmore team for no other reason than to see him play with some real talent. I could see him going off in that game.

He is one of the top three point shooters in the NBA, and would have an excellent chance to win this competition. He is one of the best set-shot three point shooters I’ve seen in a while.

If he deserves to be anywhere, it is the 3 point compeition. It would not be a gimick. It would not be a favor. He is one of the best and he should be a part of this compeition.

What the heck are some of you talking about? Nobody cares about Gallinari? Yeah hes just another 21 year old European with less than a year of NBA experience under his belt and recovering from major back surgery who happens to be leading the league in 3pt made shooting at 45% with nobody to drive and dish to him. Guys like that are a dime a dozen, you could basically find a player like that in any high school or even ymca. Oh did I mention he is also close to 7 feet, because there are so many 7 footers who can shoot 3s like that. And he can’t drive or dish or do anything else right haters? I guess none of you have really been watching any games then. Why don’t you guys just go watch Net and Clipper games so you can see franchise studs Brook Lopez and Eric Gordon lead their teams to so many great victories???? Oh wait, that hasn’t really happened yet. Haha.

Just because other teams/players/fans don’t care about a player doesn’t mean he’s a bad player. That’s not what I’m saying, what I am saying is that us as fans are a lot more enamored with him/his game than fans from other teams. That of course, we all hope, should change by year’s end or within the next year or so. M point is opposing team’s arenas aren’t selling more tickets because Danilo Gallinari is coming to town.

    For HaS

yahoo : Count Dirk Nowitzki among the NBA stars who are taking notice of Gallinari’s blossoming game. Nowitzki (…) said he watched Tuesday’s win over the Suns and came away impressed with the 21-year-old Italian’s development. “I mean, he’s got an unbelievable stroke,” Nowitzki told Newsday. “He looks like he’s comfortable with the guys. His English has gotten better, so the sky’s the limit.” (the link is dead sorry but the story is real).

I can’t find the link but Kobe Bryant praised Gallinari after the game in Los Angeles. He said he loved Gallo, a 6’10 player with a great touch and above-average ball-handling skills.

I can’t remember where this report came from (Hahn? Berman? Isola?), I tried to google it but I didn’t find any result.

Oh and Has, I don’t have the specific links but right after the Suns game Sheridan on espn in his daily dime column talked about Gallinari having a really bright future. Tim Legler on NBA Fastbreak was also talking about him a few nights ago as finally coming out as a player and showing off his versatility. Lebron after the Cavs won the game at MSG earlier this year made it a point to say encouraging words to Gallinari about making sure he stayed healthy and to keep working on his back. Alvin Gentry the Suns coach called him a really special player in his postgame conference. Or more specifically it was something along the lines of I think We can all see the type of player he will develop into. Brandon Roy seemed to have something to say to him after the game against Portland although I don’t know what specifically. I don’t really know what else you want Has, because just making a blanket statement like that that nobody else cares or is paying attention is obviously untrue.

When teams come to New York they’re bombarded with questions from the “local” media and probably the only player on the Knicks that any reporter here is going to ask about is Gallinari. They’re not going to say anything disparaging obviously, people are looked at as having bad attitude when speaking their mind in the NBA. I’m not saying there is anything bad to say about the kid, but no one is going to say anything bad about him either. Coaches and players have said good things about Eddy Curry this year too. When the Knicks go to opposing arenas they’ll be asked about those team’s promising players also (well maybe not because no one cares what the players here think about anything).

How many of his peers had to sit out their rookie season with back surgery? The point is people clearly do care about him and are aware of how he is doing and what he is doing. Dirk Nowitzki : “He’s got an unbelievable stroke (…) the sky’s the limit”.

Rick Kamla (NBATV) : “Danilo Gallinari we love you” – ranked Gallinari 2nd amongst shooting forwards in fantasy rankings (ahead of Danny Granger).

David Thorpe (ESPN) : “He’s going to be very good”.

Chad Ford (ESPN) : “I’ve been really impressed with Danilo Gallinari. Kid can shoot the lights out. Is an excellent passer. And he can play some defense. I think a lot of the Knicks future hangs on his shoulders”.

Throwback (2008) – Ian Thomsen (Sports Illustrated) : “I think he’s the No. 1 pick,” an NBA scout says of Danilo (…) “I think he’s the best player in the draft”.

Still doesn’t dispel the main point of my opinion. Fans around he league are not buzzing about Gallinari. However, like I said that could change by years end or in a year two.

          1. Because they couldn’t watch him play in college.

          2. Because he was injuried last season.

          3. Because many NBA fans don’t want to see the Knicks rise.

          4. Because the Knicks haven’t had a promising player since… Frye?

Fan reaction is irrelevant anyways IMO, it will not affect LeBron’s opinion about Gallo.

Daequan Cook of the Heat, rookie Brandon Jennings of the Bucks, Matt Bonner of the Spurs, Anthony Morrow of the Warriors…….does not sound like a good 3 point contest to watch on paper. Might be interesting to see how Jennings does though. Would’ve been nice to have Gallinari in the contest or any other good shooters in the nba like Joe Johnson, etc…
