ESPN: Help me out here…

by Tommy Dee on December 15th, 2009 at 12:38 am

Via Chris Sheridan’s chat:

“…Do you see the Blazers making a move soon? If so, who do you think they’ll go after?

“…Well, they’re calling Tuesday Andre Miller Day aty (sic) water coolers around the NBA, because lots of people thought the Blazers signed him simply to be a trade asset, and tomorrow is the first day he is eligible to be traded (check Marc Stein’s Weekend Dime for a list of all players with trade restrictions, and when they expire). I think Portland tipped its hand when it went after a wing player in Hedo Turkoglu right from the get-go, and I think that remains a spot they need to fill (along with a big body to backup Joel P. It is a well-known fact around the league that the Knicks are willing to move Al Harrington, who would be a fantastic fit for Portland, but the Blazers would have to take back Jeffries in order for the Knicks to make that deal, and when you throw him in it is very hard to find enough ballast to go along with Andre (and Rudy Fernandez, whom the Knicks would insist upon) to make the deal work…”

So help us out here Chris. The Knicks would be interested in taking back Miller’s $7.7 salary for next year in order to bring back Rudy Fernandez’s $1.2 in exchange for some semblance of Al Harrington and Jared Jeffries??

Please, sir, write an article on that one because we’re all enamored. The Knicks have been clear that they don’t want to take back salary for 2010…please elaborate.

  • GoBlueKnicks

I dont see why the knicks would make that move. I can see the appeal of rudy fernandez, but i dont think that getting an aging pg is necessarily going to help this team out, even with the salary flexibility.

Also, i think it is in the teams best interest to go with Harrington as the long-term 3 and look to move Chandler for a young PG, he is our best (tradeable) asset because Gallo isnt going anywhere

  • Dave the Rave

I can’t see Harrington going unless DW can get a lottery pick somehow. Fat chance? A Miller gives me nightmares. How is he a better retread acquisition than Hughes? Wild speculation blogging spinning out of control? I think DW will only be going after young players from now on.

  • manners

GoBlueKnicks….. i disagree!!!! Don’t get me wrong I want Harrington on this team now and for the future but wht would you trade Chandler. Dude is good. There are other deals that will be available this season where you might be able to use some of your expiring contracts to get a young point guard. If not this season then next. No need to do anything rash like trading the 21yr old Chandler. Gallo and Chandler have different games and can be on the same team.

  • Jeff Cykiert

Yes, Galo and chandler complement eachother well. They are a good 3/4 combo for D’Antoni. Chandler looks like he has his hop back and if he starts being more decisive and having some confidence, he could end up really flourishing in ball-movement based offense we have developed in the last couple of weeks. We shouldn’t try to trade him.

Harrington on the other hand, as great as he has been for us, doesn’t seem to mesh well with galo. It think they do a lot of the same things, and i have noticed lately than during most stretches of the game it is EITHER galo OR harrington who are in, usually not both. They replaced eachother throughout the whole NO game until chandler got fouled out.

I think we are grooming galo to take over Harringtons role, and that is why i think a harrington trade is the most likely (besides nate of course) He has become such a better player under MD’s guidance that we could get A LOT of value for him… a lot. And then we will have galo take over.

  • Mal

I dont care if we can get rid of Jeffries contract I dont want to lose baby Al beside Andre Miller really wouldnt fit into MD’s system. The guy has been looking horrible that y Portland is trying to move him, cant believe Im saying I’d rather have Duhon but I would. A Miller was attractive to us when he left Cleveland but nooo we blew it then, too late now.

  • Timmayyy

Isn’t it possible that Walsh would make that trade with an eye on trading Andre Miller to a contender?

Doesn’t seem that outlandish to me.

Must be some team needs a solid veteran point guard…

  • dogmanx23

I think the knicks need to focus on trading Eddy and not Jeffries. If they are doing Al/Jeffries for Andre/Rudy id also ask for a 1st pick. Remember Rudy just surgery and is out for 6 weeks or so. Its was back surgery if I’m correct.

Jeffries salary doesn’t get us 2 max guys but Eddy’s does.

  • choggs

    This doesn’t make sense.

You think DW would create a cap problem by taking Andrew Miller, because he can solve it by trading him to a contender for expiring contracts?

Doesn’t make sense. Even if you get draft picks from the said contender, that would be a late round pick because that contender would make the playoffs.

  • choggs

we’re saving this franchise one bad contract at a time.

So far, jeffries is more tradeable than Eddy Curry because Eddy is in such a bad shape.

  • donnie walsh

what about Nate and Chandler for Travis Outlaw, Rudy Fernandez and maybe some pick?
Basically after the year itd be Fernandez instead of Chandler, which I think fits this teams needs better. You’d also have the potential to bring back Outlaw at a discount

  • potaracke

I saw Eddy play in NOLA Friday night and he looked HORRIBLE. There is NO way he will get any interest at this point. Maybe in a couple of months if we’re lucky.

On the other hand, Jeffries played real well and was impressive in person (for Jared Jefffries, that is). We’re much better off try to unload him and maybe sacrificing Harrington or Chandler to get JJ gone and get back somebody young or more expiring deals.

    Good luck to us…

  • potaracke

The last thing Portland needs is another ball dominating guard (Nate), but Chandler would probably interest them. More likely they need Harrington’s scoring from the 4 (after letting Frye go).

Fernandez would be cool on the Knicks, but I’d guess Portland would try to push Bayless first. Rudy is a HUGE crowd favorite up there.

  • potaracke

I concur, Doctor. Why would we take ON salary with the off chance we could unload Miller later? Now, if there is a third partner in the deal, then the Miller scenario starts to make sense…

  • MrFurious

is that really true that the knicks brass wants to trade harrington? seems like he’s one of the few quality vets we have. as for miller, he’s a little too seasoned for my tastes, good player but we’re not on the cusp of a championship anytime soon so i dunno why you add a senior citizen to this club with a multi year contract.

  • Mucha

    Knicks interested in DJ Augustin.

    Fingers crossed.

  • Chris Alvino

Yeah Mucha I saw that. I get the feeling it is only a story because we play them tonight though. They have probably been interested in him since the day he was drafted. Not sure what it would take to get him though, especially with Felton’s impending free agency.

  • josh h

I completely agree Mal. Al right now is our best player who is doing all of the things that us Knicks fans have wanted from a player. He slashes to the hoop, can shoot threes, is a decent defender, and is a catalyst for winning with this squad. He is looked at as a locker room leader, why get rid of him for Miller? Dont get me wrong, Miller was GOOD in Philly, not so GOOD in Portland, and we think he is going to be BETTER with us? Theres a reason why Portland wants to get rid of him, and honestly, as a Knicks fan, I dont want any other team’s problems.

  • TheAngryPuppyWolf

Mr. Dee, you know what problem is? The national media is out of touch with teams on a local level. This is even more true of the Knicks, who are just now returning to the national spotlight after a decade of crap. Andre Miller?? Pshh, does ESPN know Isiah Thomas has been replaced?

  • IDunnoMyName

I really have no faith in anything written regarding the Knicks in the Daily News (the Augustin story). It would be a good get for the Knicks, as Augustin is young, cheap, fast and has a good head on his shoulders, but honestly who would they take from us? LB hates Nate and the only other salary that would work is some combination or Jordan Hill, Chandler and Toney Douglas. Is LB really looking to hand the PG duties over to Ray Felton? Don’t Hill and Chandler play the same position as Diaw and Wallace? I just don’t see it happening.

  • Cheech

As much as we all love Al, and his new found leadership, and even tho i think he would be a great sixth man next year. We can not go into next year with gallo, wilson, and al considering our target is lebron. we have to use Al’s value to dump curry or jeffries. I like rudy alot, and maybe bc he is hurt we can get him at a discount. i do not like andre miller, but remember he played well in an uptempo system for phili last year, and i rather have the 6 million that JJ makes going torward a pg. if we get rudy and miller thats our starting backcourt next year.

Id rather ship Al and JJ for Rudy and an expiring, and maybe a pick, but i dont know if there is any chance of that. There are no young pg available…

but rudy fer would be a nice peice here. maybe Al for Rudy Fer and 1st Round pick, and then we try to move JJ to another contender…

  • reddog2669

Actually, he might make a trade like that if it means bringing in core players for this team. For example, Knicks have $23 mill in cap space. Figure, $15 mill used on D’Bron Stoudebosh. $8million still to play with. Trade Jeffries and Al for Rudy and Miller (or something like that), add $3 mill to the payroll, then use the rest to resign Lee… you left with a core of

    C- Lee
    PF- LeBron
    SF- Chandler
    SG- Gallo
    PG- Miller

Bench- Hill, Douglas, maybe Bender, Curry and some 1 year contract guys. Next year, you use your newfound cap space (from Curry) to add another big piece.

All hypothetical, but I can see Donnie cutting into next years space if it means bringing in a core player for next year.

  • manners

Why is everyone so interested in trading Chandler???? Guy is only 22yrs old and is a good young developing player. Isn’t that what we have wanted for so long. Him and Gallo and then throw in Douglas and HIll and now we are building a team. Miller is washed up so please stop. Chandler is better than Travis Outlaw, younger too. DJ Augustine???…come on we can do better than him!!! Rudy Fernandez?? Okay, he would fit in with what DW is trying to do. With Oden out again maybe Portland will look to do something. I would hate to do it cause I love Al Harrington but how about Harrington and Jefferies for Fernandez?? Does that work for the books?? Is it too much?? Let me know

  • TheAngryPuppyWolf

Al and JJ for Rudy? Of course that does not work for the books. Think about it!

  • italian stallion

It’s a pleasure reading your thoughts because they often compliment and expand on my own.

For me, the issue with Harrington is that I don’t see how we can resign him at an attractive price. He’s simply not young enough or good enough to make a really big investment in. However, he might make a fine trading chip instead of allowing him to walk for nothing. I think the idea has to be to use him to get rid of Jeffries (don’t see how that can be done) or as part of a deal to pick up a draft pick and/or young player plus a lower quality player with an expiring contract.

The other thing we need to consider is how willing Walsh and D’Antoni would be to totally chuck this season out the window in order to improve the long term. I think both are still reluctant. So I see a Nate deal as more likely near term.

  • Dave the Rave

    “Is it really true?”

Rumors are not true, really : )

  • Mucha

Isola reported that Donnie Walsh was interested in aquiring Hughes one week before the trade. And I think he was the first beat writer to know the details of the Al Harrington deal.

  • Mucha

We can do better than DJ Augustin at the PG spot? I wonder who’s in your mind then.

  • Mal

Who is better out there right now that we can get? Is Bayless better than DJ? Me personally I’d like a PG at 6″5 so lets work on the project recovering form injury Livingston, give OKC something

  • MrFurious

I guess i was reacting to:

It is a well-known fact around the league that the Knicks are willing to move Al Harrington…

Not that I travel in NBA circles but I had not read even any rumors to that end…

  • josh h

Lets definately not take a look at Livingston. He can’t stay healthy.

  • monstert

Best interest for the Knicks to go with Harrington as their whaaaat?

Have you heard of a talented 3, plays in Clevland or something….

  • monstert

Well, Eddy has less than zero value right now. I bet nobody would take him even if we put Chandler and our #1 in 2012 together…so let’s deal with what we can.

  • monstert

The truth is that if we’d shop Jeffries, we’re only adding on 2-3 million, and getting Rudy F. as well.

The ability to possibly send Miller to a team hurting for a PG come playoff time – if something happens like what happened already to Jameer Nelson – is just gravy.

If this would still allow the Knicks to sign James, a lineup consisting of Rudy, Dre’ (although I hope he gets out) and Gally look to better complement LBJ than whatever we’ve got now. We cannot sign two max FA right now anyway…

  • monstert

How much salary are we taking on if JJ heads out, anyway?

  • monstert

Why would Pritchard land himself more cap, when he already has Miller bogging him down in 2010?

  • monstert

Great, let’s add a project for our team next year….

If we get Lebron, a good point wont be necessary. I bet even Douglas will be fine, so long as he works on his long ball…

But someone like Rudy (sans that schiatic pain) could really help this offense next year. The more I think about it, dealing Al and JJ for Rudy and Andre seems like a good plan for the Knicks. I’m also somewhat confident that the Knicks will be able to flip Miller…

  • Dave the Rave

Who knows if that’s current or old stuff? Unless DW tells us what he’s been doing recently I don’t think we should buy into anything. Some team leaks that they made inquiries about a player and then the whole world thinks that a serious trade is being discussed or a player has been dangled and is on the block.

    Just blogging………

  • Dave the Rave

Harrington and N8, if he got his head straightened out, would be dynamic 6th and 7th men. That could be 40 pts off the bench. Just need LeBron, a power forward, a center and a pt guard! : )

  • jgilch82

if we get lebron or wade … i want derek fisher to be the PG of this team

  • potaracke

The only way we should cut into next year’s cap (with or without trading JJ or EC) is for a young, but proven pg…and good luck finding one of those available right now.

  • HaS

    It’ll never happen.

  • HaS

I’d argue that LeBron would love to play with a true point guard, he’s already in the situation of having to play point and priority scorer in Cleveland. Hes played with a multitude of combo guards who are/were better scorers than distributors already. See: Flip Murray, Larry Hughes, Daniel Gibson, Delonte West, Maurice Williams…

  • HaS

    SG- Gallo

    Will never happen.
