Daily News: Knicks Keeping an Eye on Augustin

By Tommy Dee on Dec 15, 2009, 11:05 am

Via Isola:

“…Charlotte‘s D.J. Augustin is currently struggling with Brown’s Play The Right Way edict, which could be a good thing for the Knicks. Augustin remains a player of interest for the Knicks, who, according to a team source, had extensive talks last season with the Bobcats regarding a deal for the second-year guard out of Texas.

“He was part of a bigger deal,” the source said. “But I know the Knicks like him very much.”

Knicks president Donnie Walsh declined to discuss his level of interest in Augustin, although it is no secret that Walsh and Brown, friends for many years, talk regularly. According to a source, Brown is open to trading Augustin but has been overruled by Michael Jordan.

“He hasn’t defended like he needs to defend,” Brown said recently. “He hasn’t made shots. He hasn’t distributed the ball…”

Knick fans complain about bad drafting, huh? Anyone understand why the Bobcats took Augustin to begin with?

Again, any deal with Augustin would have to include a extending contract after this season and because salaries would have to match. You would figure the Bobcats would have interest in Wilson Chandler and if the Knicks throw in Marcus Landry’s contract after December 25, when Landry is eligible to be dealt, then it could work.

You could also fan it out to a bigger deal that could possible include Jared Jeffries and a combination of Augustin, Acie Law and Flip Murray although Law can’t be traded until January 15 as he was part of the Stephen Jackson deal. Of course a third team could get involved as well.

With the Jonathan Bender signing, it seems clear that Walsh is primed to make a move come January 2010.

He would be a great piece to play alomg side LBJ next year. A solid PG thats just in a slump. He would flourish in Dantoni’s system.. The countdown begins to get rid of JJ and/or Curry. No way were getting LBJ if we can’t get another max player to play along side him. Get to work Donnie!

Anybody who isn’t happy about the 2008 draft doesn’t watch basketball; or they just don’t understand it.

I have to agree with you Jeff. I am stunned when I still hear criticism of Gallo as our choice…

Yea, and I’m sure you guys all prefer GALLO over Gordon and LOPEZ… I dont think so. How about the year he took off for his back last year? Maybe the same back problem that will end his career early. He’s a good player, but there is no way you guys wouldn’t want to go back and draft Lopez or Gordon. Same thing with Hill over Jennings. And who the heck brought up the 2008 draft anyway? Lets talk about the future and how good were doing now.

Really? The same Gordon who has been injury prone the last TWO years. Talk about injury prone, every time I turn around he has a hamstring injury… You can make a case for Lopez, but I have watched a couple Nets games and he seems a little soft, but stil an excellent post player. However, I much rather have the ball in Dino’s hands down the stretch rather than Brooke’s.

Augustine isnt that much better than duhon if he is even better. Statistics show that duhon is better but thats not the problem. The problem is that the defense of a team starts at the pg spot and Augustine is way far from a defensive player, see what Nate does to him every time just imagine him against elite guards. Knicks need a better solution . Somebody who is actually better than duhon and that would actually affect winning like say Ridnour, Westbrook,Bayless these guys could be had wath the right deal.

definitely not westbrook, unless we give them gallo.

yeah Gallo is has the skill set to be a very good if not great player . when you put him with an all-star on the court like maybe LBJ you would see him flourish because he would always get the ball when he his open and he would learn a lot .

If they get Augustin that means no PT for Douglas. I think Douglas should be groomed to be a point guard if he wants to go anywhere in the league. Otherwise, I don’t know why the Knix drafted him.

He was drafted to replace Nate’s spot as the 3rd Guard. TD is not a PG.

      douglass is no PG

He should be groomed to be a PG. He can dribble and pass and he’s quick, so he can be a backup PG with practice.

“He should be groomed to be a PG. He can dribble and pass and he’s quick, so he can be a backup PG with practice.”

Passing is not his strong suit. He’s a Lindsey Hunter type. Not a bad thing, but not a prototypical point guard.

the KNICKS should trade Jeffries for Ramon Sessions.chrissakes minny signs this guy and hes sittin on the bench.hes twice the PG that Duhon is and plays better deeeeeee

The Knicks should try to aquire a dynamic guard like DJ Augustin or Jerryd Bayless.

DJ Augustin is not a Larry Brown type of point guard obviously, but I think he could blossom under Mike D’Antoni – Steve Nash has never been a great defender neither.

Danilo Gallinari + Jordan Hill + DJ Augustin = enticing

I just don’t understand why you can’t make a post about the knicks having interest in Augustin without first rushing to the defense of the Knicks drafting history.

Dont get your hopes up too high about trading for augustine because Isola has been know to report bogus trade rumors. Larry said he wanted to trade him but Jordan said no. Larry always wants a trade but how often does it get done?

wow one post of one story and how many more bogus stories did Vescey call him on? And im not impressed with him because i know he cant defend an and those mixes exaggerate players skills but hops wouldnt hurt . he is too small with average speed.

im not so impressed with auggies game either.i know he has speed, but hes not a big DEE guy,and if hes on the bobcats bench ,why would we want him

Later for DJ … he’s fast but undersized & not that great a shooter. At this point the Knicks should wait till summer to package something for Rubio’s rights and add CJ Watson as a FA PG. He’ll only be 26 and will be an upgrade on Du-NON who, I hope, we won’t re-sign.

I’m not saying that Isola’s the absolute truth, but several reports were accurate (Larry Hughes, Al Harrington, didn’t waste his time during the Ramon Sessions negociations).

I can understand why you’re not a fan of DJ Augustin – but youtube is definitely not a measuring stick.

Finally I move that would make sense…We need a pass 1st PG…I think Augustine would be the perfect person behind Duhon this year and he can start next year..No way do I trade Wilson Chandler though…

    Duhon
    Hughes
    Chandler
    Gallo
    Lee

    Augustine
    Douglas
    Harrington
    Curry

Who could the Knicks actually trade or want to trade to get Dj Augustine? Is it worth adding him being that he has 2 years on his contract? Besides, all the reports I read said that Micheal Jordan wont trade Augustine.

Anyway, is anyone also hoping that Jonathan Bender gets some kind of minutes tonight (even if its garbage time) just to see how he looks out there?

Personally, I wanna see N8 before Bender. Time for D’ant to lift the “timeout” off Krypto … he’s been a good soldier through this & head cheerleader on the bench, so let him out to play, OK Father D’ant ?

the knicks are such a better team when hes not on the floor. How can you not see that?
