Thoughts on Anthony Randolph
By Tommy Dee - Dec 16, 2009 7:47 pm

I’ve received a ton of emails on this so let’s go…

Yes we are aware that Anthony Randolph is available and I can tell you this, Donnie Walsh is a fan. How do I know? Let’s just say that it’s not a secret around Knicks camp.

Walsh, from what I’ve gathered, had Randolph high on his draft board last year and thought about him at 6 along with Gallinari and Gordon, but he felt that Gallo was the safe pick. Gordon was someone who would have sat behind Jamal Crawford, Nate Robinson, whom Coach D’Antoni was very excited about at the time and  Chris Duhon whom the team signed two weeks later.

Randolph could be available and isn’t the same player as his LSU counterpart Ty Thomas- anyone who watched him in the summer league this year knows that his game is much more face up and he can equally guard the rim as a help defender- a huge need for this team as we all witnessed last night.

But do the Knicks have the pieces to make a deal? I don’t know that. It’s doubtful that Golden State would want Nate Robinson, but after Christmas a Wilson Chandler/ Marcus Landry package would work.

Again, that is not to say that a deal is in the works, or if Golden State is interested in dealing again with the Knicks. It’s that the organization is very familiar with Randolph’s talents.

i wouldn’t deal hill now.and this is don nelson.nate and a bottle of wiskey should be enough.seriously though, nate and chandler should be enough.if we come away with randolph hill gallo in the frontcourt, and if we can get1 or two young promising backcourt players out with lee or harrington, we’d be pretty set.

Does Hill for Randolph work? Chandler is proven Randoplh is proven in the summer league.

Chandler i think is more developed then Randolph. I wouldn’t do that trade.

More proven?

Obviously Chandler’s a talented player but he’ll never be special in this league. I think Randolph has star potential, he’s more hungry than Chandler.

I agree, chandler has talent but he’ll never be more than a role player, and unless he improves his basketball IQ, he wont even be a role player on a good team…

Randolph is just as physically gifted (even more so bc he is a 7 footer) and he has a better handle…he would be a great pickup and in the short term would a good pairing with Lee in the front court bc he is such a good shot blocker…adding him would be huge…

how can you say he is more hungry than chandler…. chandler works so hard on his game. just because he is quiet and does not show emotion, does not mean he is not hungry. he’s really starting to come around.

I still believe that Anthony Randolph is a special player and the fact that he’s in Don Nelson’s doghouse is a golden opportunity : his talent-level is extremely high and his trade value is low. I think Donnie Walsh HAS to make a trade for him, he’s a unique player and a Gallinari/Randolph duo at the 3/4 spot would be absolutely crazy in Mike D’Antoni’s system.

Wilson Chandler and Darko Milicic for Anthony Randolph, Speedy Claxton and Devean George.

Or the trade Tommy suggested.

Aren’t we missing the part where he is being traded because of his lack of fire and heart? Does anyone else see that as a problem for a skinny as a rail 7 footer? Cuz I do.

With that said, I roll the dice on Chandler for Randolph because you can replicate Chandler’s game with another 6′7″ talented wing. If he pans out, a 7 foot hybrid 3/4 that can protect the rim is very rare. Its worth the gamble.

Golden State isnt trading Randolph unless it is part of a larger salary dump (them dumping) or part of a larger deal for a superstar level talent.

No way even Golden State does Randolph for Chandler plus.. If Donnie doesnt want to take back any added 2010 salary (a given) then a third team will have to be involved.

Anthony Randolph, Devon George and the corpse of Speedy Claxton for Chandler, Hill and Jeffries? Who doesn’t do that?

Golden State laughs at that one.

why would GSW take back 2010 salary in Jeffries for two expirings when they what to clear space for a rebuild? and essentially trade Chandler and the rook who doesnt play for Randolph ..

maybe if Donnie bats his eyes at Nelson he’ll throw in Stephan Curry.

I don’t know about him being more ambitious than Chandler. He’s supposedly on the block for a reason. ESPN’s Chris Broussard writes that “Despite his tremendous talent, (the GSW have ) concerns about Randolph’s work ethic and lack of focus”. Supposedly the organization is disappointed in him.

Golden State is a dysfunctional organization. They had issues with Al Harrington and Jamaal Crawford. Those are like 2 upstanding guys in the NBA that hardly ever complain! There’s probably nothing wrong with Anthony Randolph other than him and Don Nelson not getting along (what else is new when it comes to Don Nelson and his players).

Com on guys,

Randolph for Chandler? Why in the world would GS do that, I agree with BIG, they are two different level of assets, Randolph is a major trade asset, while I think Chandler will not bring back any players of Randolph’s caliber. Chandler could be added in a deal to shed salary, but not to bring in with high potential.

We are OVER valuing Chandler here

We definately over value Chandler. in my opinion he has not gotten better since last year, if anything he has gotten worse. he settles for jumpers too much, he cant dribble at all, and he is simply not a very smart basketball player. i like chandler, but he is not a unique player…randolph may be…

Chandler is equally as talented as Randolph. To be honest with you they have the same talent and athleticsm, the only real difference is Randolph is bigger and has a longer wingspan. Randolph would be better for the team cause of his ability to defend 3 positions and as a shotblocker, which is why I would do the trade. However, to say that GS wouldnt do this deal cause we are “overvaluing” Chandler is ridiculous. Randolph has the same flaw Chandler has which is IQ. Plus Randolph is on the block for a reason he has maturity issues and he is can be lazy at times. If you want to say Randolph isnt as focuses cause his playing time is up and down or his team sucks ok, but Chandler has played on his share of bad teams and you cannot say he takes plays off, he can look a little lost but he never stops trying.

Chandler can be infuriating at times especially when he gets three ball happy, but when he takes it to the basket and shoots that mid range shot, he is a 16 ppg player, he just has to become more consistent.

You are now overvaluing Randolph. What makes Randolph special is his freaky size and length not his talent. Now you can say he definilty has higher potential than chandler, but to say he more talented than Chandler is ridiculous. Randolph is soft. Hes about 200 pounds wet. Chandler is a role player but to say Randolph is any more than that right now is ridiculous. Randolph scares me. He scared me at draft night and he scares me today. He has lazy tendencies and can lose focus. Most of the time it seems he wil never realize his potential accept in the summer league. Again I would do this deal because Chandler will be no more than a role player, and while the risk is high the reward is very high, however to say that Golden
St. would laugh at this deal is just plain stupid.

Now if I was Golden St. I would try to get rid of salary as Big said. Which is why they may not consider this. But to say they wouldnt do the deal because chandler has less talent than randolph is ridiculous.

Living near SF I watch GS and Randolph a lot. He’s hard to figure out. He is moody and at times very lazy on D and usually very undicsiplined on O. If you want him as the starting power forward, beware. Heavier PFs eat him up. He is waaaaay too skinny. Yeah, he shows flash at times but I think he needs a few years to develop. Right now I don’t know if he will ever develop from s skinny green kid to a stud like Germaine O’Nell did. I say stay away from him now and get someone bigger and not moody.

I dont think he is anything like Jermaine O’neal…

his game is not really like anyone right now. hes an athletic 7 footer and he has a good handle, but his jumpshot is a little suspect (his midrange is ok, but he cant step out too far), hes a good shot blocker and rebounder…but he doesnt have any post game (offensively or defensively)

this is just my opinion, but i wouldnt say that there is anyone that he is like right now…maybe a taller tyrus thomas with better handle and a slightly better jumper…

I think most discussions for Randolph have to begin with either Gallo or Chandler/Hill and a 1st rounder. I don’t see it happening, but if it were to happen, now would be the time. Nellie falls in and out of love with players often, Randolph might not be on the table for long. Regardless of our chances of matching up a trade, Donnie better be giving it a good go.

But we don’t need Randolph anyway, we got Bender! WoOt.

Chandler/Hill/Mobley for Randolph/Bell/Claxton? Bell’s basically out for the season, and they get two young guys and an insurance payout for the expirings they’re giving up.

I’m hoping/guessing that getting Bell back with D’A gives him a nice reason to sign with us at a little ‘10 discount. It’d be nice to fill the 2 spot cheap to maybe go after Gay at the 3 (not my personal choice, but he’s a hot candidate right now).

I don’t agree. Do you watch GS games? Randolph has many flaws. Don’t just go by highlight films. I think u r over valuing him. Chandler’s game is actually more stable than Randolph’s. But one is a big and the other a small forward, so u can’t compare them straight up. I don’t think D’A would like Randolph’s undisciplined play. Chandler is playing the ball control offense better and better and his shot is becoming deadly. I hope he becomes more consistent. He has one bad game and many bloggers trash him.

Comment by parkerstrong

Randolph’s games arent stable because of Nelson and his flucuation of PT….Randolph needs consistent PT to explode. The potential is there, but hasnt been given a consistent chance to show it.

Anthony Randolph is a great talent, but the Knicks should save their young talent in Chandler, Gallo, Hill, and Douglass, unless they can find a trade partner who would be willing to take Curry or Jeffries as well.

4 trade ideas come to find.

Sending Harrington and Milicic to the Bulls for Miller and Thomas.
Then trade Thomas to the Trailblazers for Steve Blake’s expiring contract. The Blazers simply move Andre MIller to the starting rotation and Thomas helps out the Blazers front line.

The Bulls want Harrington and the Knicks need a PG that can facilitate the offense this year and make the team look good. That way, free agents will actually way to come to NY if the Knicks finish strong – at least 35+ wins.
The Blazers have a deep need for help in the front court and Tyrus Thomas acquiesces that.

The Knicks need to acquire T-Mac from the Rockets now & lose a contract for next year as well. Mcgrady’s expiring contract will help te Knicks next year and Jeffries, Hughes, and Robinson for T-Mac will aid the Rockets this year in their playoff run.

Finally, send Curry, Chandler, Lee, and Duhon for Butler, Haywood, and Miller.

The point of these trades is to rid the contracts of Curry and Jeffries which extend to the next year. The only true loss here will be Will the Thrill to the Wizards. Obviously the tension of Butler and his teammates in Washington will open a window for him to be moved and this is the time.

The Knicks would be running a roster of Blake, Butler, McGrady, Haywood, Miller, Gallo, Douglas, Hill, Bender, Miller, Landry,

The only guaranteed contracts for the Knicks would be Butler, Gallo, Hill, and Douglas. This gives the Knicks more than enough cap room to make some serious noise this coming summer.

Of course, Nate can only be traded on or after this coming 12/22 and Lee 12/25,

I wouldn’t mind a starting rotation of Blake, Butler, McGrady, Hill/Miller, and Haywood. The Knicks need an inside presence after the debacle which was the 4th quarter of the Bobcats game.

Of all of those teams looking to trade, Washington interests me. Portland could happen, but it won’t be with Thomas. Harrington’s probably staying here (I don’t know about you, sometimes, Donnie…), signing for the MLE next year or something. Besides, why would we essentially trade Harrington’s expiring for Miller’s, AND keep Miller instead of Thomas?

Trading Duhon, whose value is at an extreme high right now, is one of the pieces meant to attract the Wizards. The Wizards don’t have a pass first PG, and that is exactly the perception that the league has on Duhon. Of course, Knicks fans know better about Duhon and his 3-point chuck fests.

Tyrus Thomas $4.5 MM contract is the only one that matches with Blake’s contract to a T. If the Harrington could be kept and Blake acquired at the same time, who is necessary since Duhon will be trade, then that would be the way to go. But the Knicks need Thomas to get what they need from Portland.

And of course, you are overlooking the main point of all of these trades: eliminating salary obligations to Curry and Jeffries. Cutting the payroll was priority last year in sending away Crawford and Z-Bo, it was the primary factor in not signing Sessions, and it still is number 1 on the itinerary of this season.

Don’t let developing Douglas and Hill and winning fool you, the Knicks need to cut salary. Even though the aforementioned help, money will buy you what you need.

Comment by traps9

I think you guys are over valuing Anthony Randolph. I get on Wilson Chandler all the time for having a low basketball IQ, but Randolph may be just as bad. Plus it’s true, he doesn’t have a great motor. And how does a 6′11 PF shoot 42% from the field?

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?playerId=3455

Anthony Randolph is far from a star. And I don’t know if I buy all this stuff about him being a star in this system. Golden State plays a very similar system, and he’s been a huge disappointment there. What did this system do for Darko Milicic?

Mike D’Antoni’s system doesn’t make you smarter and it doesn’t make you play hard.

Comment by Dave the Rave
2009-12-16 22:58:26

Randolph does not appear to have a high motor at times, but most times he plays like he’s possessed and is dying to be the team’s go-to guy, but his court discipline is shoddy and his lazy defensive skills drive the coach crazy at times.

What does this mean? “Mike D’Antoni’s system doesn’t make you smarter and it doesn’t make you play hard.”

Serious? He had the Suns playing harder than any team for about 4 years and until the last game the Knix were all playing their asses off with 5 men in constant motion on both ends of the court.

Comment by The_Guy
2009-12-16 23:28:15

It means if you’re a player that doesn’t play hard every night and has a low basketball IQ, his system isn’t going to cure you. Darko is a perfect example. Wilson Chandler is another.

The Suns are playing just as hard without Mike D’Antoni than they did with him. And they’re doing it without Leandro Barbosa (injury) or Shawn Marion (trade).

I think Randolph’s biggest problem is that he thinks he can shoot. He’s not strong enough to play in the post and loves settling for jumpers, which he’s shooting at 42%. That’s why he’s in Nellie’s doghouse.

That’s why G.S. is trying to play him at center, to force him to play closer to the basket, so he’ll stop shooting so many jumpers. It’s never a good sign when a player gets a lazy rap while on his rookie deal. Anthony Randolph is like a 6′11 Tyrus Thomas.

They can both dominate Summer League like few others, but when it counts, they don’t have a clue how to play during the regular season. Both are way too skinny for their position.

Even if they are willing to trade him, it’s not like they are trying to pawn him off. They know that he has tremendous talent and potential, and would expect an established, good player in return. There is no way they would give him up for chandler and darko (pretty much just chandler.) There is no sense in that. His salary is so low that he would need to be a part of a bigger deal where they land a legit player. These are the types of players that go in trades for allstars who are done with their current team. (aka garnett, bosh?).

We do not have the assets to aqcuire him. Harrington my be becoming a pretty nice asset, but clearly he isn’t going back to GS.

Lee is our only other great asset right now, and we wouldn’t part with him for this, because the numbers wouldn’t match and we would need to take back 2010 salary.

He would be perfect for this system. he has all the skills to play the 3 for us on offense; pretty much the same role as chandler. (we dont want chandler shooting 3s anyway.) Then we could still have galo/harrington and Lee next to him. But on defense he could anchor us, kind of like jeffries did last night but 20 times better of an over-all player. It would be ridiculous. Marion 2.0 plus 5.

Unfortunately it can’t happen IMO.

Randolph is a 6′11 animal with a 7′3 wingspan and great ball-handling skills, he runs the floor like a deer and is often out-of-control because he’s too emotional.

Randolph might have a low basketball IQ (which is debatable) but obviously basketball IQ is not Chandler’s forte anyways. Oh yeah, AR is 2 years younger. He just needs to spend more time in the weight room.

I think a Wilson Chandler for Anthony Randolph swap makes sense (the Knicks might have to offer more though). Wilson Chandler is an athletic swingman who’d fit in Don Nelson’s undersized line-ups and a coachable kid – he wouldn’t respond if Nellie beat him with his vodka bottle.

Don Nelson is a psycho, he loves to play mind games with the young fellas. I’ve seen Anthony Randolph play with fire and desire, the kid usually plays with a chip on his shoulder. Will might be hungry in practice dino, but Randolph is an animal – and he’s a special talent. He’s far from being a perfect player obviously (his jumpshot doesn’t look good, he’s often out of control and he’s not strong enough to play with his back to the basket) but he’s just 20 years old. Now, DTR is right – his discipline is questionable but I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. Wasn’t Al Harrington disgruntled in Golden State?

The Warriors are in total disarray. Nellie is not the GM. He will be gone before or at the end of this year. He’ll get his all-time wins record and say adios. I doubt that he has any say in the Warriors plans for next year. On hoopshype today he said he likes Randoph. I don’t know if we can believe that but I doubt that the Warriors will trade him. They just lost Moore, Biedrins and Wright Turiaf are out with injuries and they have no size up front except AR.

Everyone in GS is disgruntled. nelson tampers with player’s careers with no apparent strategy to actually win or at least improve players’ value. Harrington was labled as an outcast and now he is flourishing and playing better than he ever has. Jackson seemed like a trouble maker and now he’s fitting right in in charlotte under an all time great coach, teaming up very nicely with wallace.

I am with mucha on this; you give him the benefit of the doubt; especially with a kid this young. If he is getting large minutes and playing with confidence in a system that would allow for him to play on the perimeter, he could turn into a beast. He averages 18 and 10 in the 5 games he has played over 30 minutes this year.

Anyway, i would take him in a second, but i don’t know why i’m saying this because we really don’t have a way of aquiring him. Chandler would not land randolph.

I’m not supportive of any trade talks that include contracts that go past this year… unless we receive a proven star to help sign another star this summer or next. Jeffries and/or Curry’s contracts are the priority to trade to clear cap space and get farther below the cap. If no takers for either, then I hope we can buyout one at the end of the season. Then we can consider the value of our young talent and trading to improve without salary matching. Stand pat and see where things are near the deadline.

With all these Go-To Players and Stars available I dont know if I want Ant Randolph over them. I mean if we can’t get a Caron Butler or T Mac then yes please get Ant Randolph but I think a star like Caron would help more.

Randolph will be on a rookie deal-low salary. If the Knicks trade for Butler, they will have to give up value (Chandler/Hill/Douglas/Gallo-at least someone from that group) and have his salary get in the way of 2010 cap space. I’d pass.

Caron Butler is slightly overrated in my opinion, I wouldn’t call him a star.

How about this trade: Anthony Randolph and Speedy Claxton for Jared Jeffries?

Golden State would be stupid to turn down a trade for Jared Jeffries.

I think the farther we get into the day, the more this blog’s comments reek of alcohol.

My guess is that Randolph won’t be going anywhere near New York.

Guys for those who missed my post 2 days ago on this very issue the trade that makes sense for both sides IMO is Hill Chandler JJ for Kelenna Azubuike,Anthony Randolph & Raja Bell…..The money is a match and saves us 3mill next year while adding more talent in Randolph & Azubuike.

For them they get to save face saying the basically got the 8th pick in the draft along with a solid front court defender in JJ & a very talented and vers young player in Chandler who is still cheap in his rookie contract.

We end up getting what looks like a young more athletic version of Camby who can only get better as well as a legit shooting guard in Azubuike as well as saving 3mill next year while upgrading the talent on our roster! By the way Bell is in his last year right now and is a good locker room guy solid defense and knows MD’s system.

To add to to that the free agents we are looking to bag IMO would look more favorably on Gallo,Randolph,Azubuike and if we are smart trading for a mid 1rd pick (Lee or Nate or both) makes us more attractive.
