The Price Tag for Randolph

By Tommy Dee on Dec 21, 2009, 11:54 am

Via Hahn:

“…Some of you may have missed it, but we did report last week that the Knicks have held an interest in Anthony Randolph since last season. The Warriors may be willing to trade the former lottery pick but from what I’m told the price would be extremely high (Gallinari). The Knicks have absolutely no interest in making that swap…”

Obviously, that isn’t in play for the Knicks. Chris Mullin believed very much in Randolph and it’s clear the organization still does too.

He’s certainly an amazing talent. However, if the Knicks had him, Chandler, and Buckets on the floor at the same time I think it would trigger an apocalypse or something. Seriously, that combined basketball iq would probably result in some bad basketball. Would anyone trade Chandler for him? Im not sure either team would do that.

I would not trade either Chandler or Gallo for Randolph straight up. Randolph has great potential but is too skinny to be a star PF. Let’s see what he looks like in 3 or 4 years. I don’t see him getting much better. Meanwhile, Chandler and Gallo are improving by the week and have great upsides.

Too skinny to be a star PF?

Don’t you remember Kevin Garnett when he was 19 years old?

It’s easy to say “let’s see what he looks like in 3 or 4 years” and then ask for a trade… because it’ll be too late if he turns out to be a stud you want to see the Knicks make a trade for.

Well, Mucha, Anthony Randolph is not Kevin Garnett. I wouldn’t gamble on him now. Just my opinion.

I prefer PFs with muscular brawny bodies. In any event, the chances of the Warriors trading him are slim and none. The Warriors need big men now more than ever. Nellie said he likes him and he is not in the dog house. Just because Nellie has played him sparingly in some games does not mean he is in his disfavor and not wanted. The media over-hypes these things.

I don’t see a fit how we can become trading partners for Randolph. They will get a better offer somewhere else. He is an exciting player though.

        No that’s too much.

I think Randolph will be a star in this league. But maybe I’m wrong. To trade 2 talented young players for 1 is foolish in my opinion, reminds me of the 2 draft picks for Curry deal.

Gallinari for Randolph? No way. Noooo way.

And Chandler is balling right now, he’s finally playing well – I still believe that Randolph has a higher ceiling though. His trade value might drop if he pulls an Al Harrington…

How about Hill for Randolph right now?

  5. Jeff Cykiert
    Dec 21, 2009, 12:21 pm at 12:21 pm #

Chandler Lee and nate might be enough, but we would have to take back a big contract to even it out, probably magette, which obviously isn’t happening.

But i had an Idea. They want to get rid of magettes contract because he makes about 10 mil a year through 2013-2014.

What if some sort of trade could be worked out where we include Curry and they include magette. Sure… curry is making 11 mil next year, but then he is expiring, so the warriors will still save 10 mil a year for the 3 subsequent years (or 30 million dollars.) Obviously, we would have to include so serious young talent to get that trade done, and Galo isn’t going anywhere. But something like chandler curry, and cash for magette and randolph, while probably very unlikely, does make a little bit of sense.

They clearly wouldn’t be getting enough talent though, so maybe there could be a third piece introduced on both sides, or a 3rd team.

Im just thinking randomly… in the end, we probably have no means of getting the kid.

Lee and Nate aren’t signed past this year, they would be taking a huge risk. Randolph for Chandler is a little lopsided.

      • HaS
        Dec 21, 2009, 12:23 pm at 12:23 pm #

Meaning Chandler may be all they end up with in that deal if both Lee and Nate didn’t resign.

    • SpaceMan
      Dec 21, 2009, 1:34 pm at 1:34 pm #

lee and nate’s deals are byc, no? that means there deals count half what they are against the cap right? lee’s deal is 7 mill(3.5 mill against the cap) a year, nate’s 4 mill (2 mill against the cap) and chandler’s deal is 1, 225,440 a year.that’s a total of $7,225,440. randolph’s deal is $1,837,560 and speedy claxton’s is $5,209,454, that’s $7,047,014.

so we don’t have to take magette’s contract back.if lee and nate walking would be an issue than extensions should try and get worked out.

    Dec 21, 2009, 12:22 pm at 12:22 pm #

I don’t see why Golden state would do that, unless Randolph really becomes a problem. Its more interesting to think about if the Knicks would do that. I happen to think they still haven’t given up on Hill and plan on him being a major part of the future, although unfortunately that seems to put me in the minority on this blog.

  7. Jeff Cykiert
    Dec 21, 2009, 12:22 pm at 12:22 pm #

But i would take magettes 10 mil a year for the next for years over curry’s 11 mil next year, any day… as long as we aren’t adding any salary to next year… and magette could actually contribute…

I would only do this if it was to get randolph, though, because 2011 cap room might end up being just as important as 2010 cap room.

Lee can veto any trade, I don’t think he’d accept a trade to Golden State considering the Al Harrington-Boris Yelstin feud. I mean Don Nelson. He knows that the Warriors are dysfunctional.

I think the only trade assets are Wilson Chandler and Jordan Hill. Chandler is playing really well though, so that leaves Hill…

But if we trade Hill we’d have to resign David Lee next summer. And Lee WILL see big money.

      Dec 21, 2009, 12:35 pm at 12:35 pm #

Would you be willing to trade Curry, Jeffries, Landry, and Jordan Hill for Maggette, Anthony Randolph, Claxton or Bell, and CJ Watson? This would knock and additional $9 million off the cap next year, allowing us to sign 2 max FAs. It obviously adds $10 million to the cap for 2 additional years, but I say it’s worth it. I’d rather have Maggette than Curry and Jeffries.

Golden State claims that they will only trade Randolph in a package with Maggette. This trade would save them plenty in the long run and helps us in the short term.

In a heartbeat, but how does this trade help GS in any conceiveable way.

        • Randy B.
          Dec 21, 2009, 1:30 pm at 1:30 pm #

It saves them over $10 million on Maggette’s contract which lasts 2 years past Jeffries and Curry. It also gets them back a young promising PF/C that they were rumored to have liked.

We would basically be trading Curry, Jeffries, and Hill for Maggette and Randolph. Watson could be a solid back-up point as well.

        @ Randy B:

Ok that trade is almost like swapping the whole team! If _on Nelson were a lot different from Mike _’antoni then I’d say do it because he could probably get more out of the players. I still think their styles of coaching are too similar and I would like to look forward to a little more than Golden State East.

Lee has been playing great for us this season. real talk. He is going to get a $10mil contract whether we all want him to or not. I am in definitely in favor of keeping Lee. He’s a 20-10 guy whose passing skills are getting better and better. And hes atleast making an effort on the defensive end, which is an improvement.

I know that he’s not a good defender, but outscored opposing bigs like Brook Lopez, Chris Kaman, Amare Stoudemire etc.

He is guarding the paint. if he wants in the 8 mil range to play for me, he needs to look at the defenseive end as more than a place to relax and wait until the shot goes up hoping the guy misses so he can add another rebound to his stats.

Nellie was disgusted with Brandon Wright’s greenness. He’d be even more down on Hill. Hill has zero trade value.

The only possible trade scenario that could work would be Randolph & George for Hill & Chandler.

Before the draft, the Warriors were supposedly interested in Hill at 7 and they have a need for a PF, and Chandler can be the stating SF right away and is still under contract for next season

Just as important, with the above trade, we actually shed almost 2million in salary for the all important LeBronapolooza

We might not need Amare or Bosh if Bender can come around, and if someone gets in Lee’s ear about defending.

Far as Randolph I know Mike D once said he’d like a team of 6’9 and above, get Gerald Green to learn how to play D while overseas and bring him on board also.

Far as trading Hill it wont be the first time we let cats go before we know what we have (Nene, Trevor and Channing)

      Wow

Wait until the guy starts missing those 3′s. The law of averages will bring his numbers down and hurt the fans perception because people are overlooking some bad turnovers and missed assignments. People are giving him the benefit of the doubt because his comeback is a fairy tale for him and he’s shooting the ball well. I think he’ll be out of the rotation before the season end.

Lee is no center or defender and if D’A uses Bender as a wingman on offense as someone said, is he a clog-the-middle center on defense? I wonder if D’A cares about clogging the middle with his biggest guy. Stoudamire doesn’t defend the paint. Bosh maybe does, not sure. Does he? Is he the right guy to play center?

  13. traps9
    Dec 21, 2009, 5:12 pm at 5:12 pm #

At this point, you have to weigh the position he plays along with the talent he is. Chandler and Gallo are at your 3/4, and Randolph is basically your new 4. But to get Randolph, you’re not only giving up your 3, you’re also going to have to give up your possible future 5 in Hill, maybe even along with taking back money past ’11. You’re going to lose 2 or 3 future players at positions you’re not positive yet you can fill with superstars.

If you waited until January 16, you could go the route of Chandler/Hill/Jeffries/Hughes for Randolph/Maggette/Claxton/Bell and throw in a second rounder if you had to. Am I in agreement with this? No, not really. I think they’re grossly overrating Randolph (= Gallo? Come on.), but he could get there eventually. Seems it’s not gonna happen, but if it does, it’s because Donnie decides to concede a little. That’s not like him.
