Curry Won’t Do the Knicks any Favors

by Tommy Dee on December 29th, 2009 at 9:43 am

Via NY Post:

“…D’Antoni gave his sturdiest defense on why he has given up on Curry, who the coach believes more firmly than ever doesn’t fit his style. Curry has been a DNP for five straight games and appears as out of the picture as Nate Robinson and Darko Milicic.

As reported last week in The Post, Curry said he hopes the Knicks buy him out after the season.

The Knicks could open another $2 million in extra cap room in 2010 — which is crucial — if Curry agrees to take $9.3 million of the $11.3 million he has left in the final year of his contract. Curry figures to make up the money by signing elsewhere for the veteran’s minimum ($1.9M).

A buyout is virtually impossible this season since Curry’s final year is a player option and not guaranteed. Hence, a current buyout would not factor in next season’s salary, and Curry would never do it…”

We were off a little on the veteran minimum, but it makes sense that Curry would try and latch on with a team with the hopes of supplementing the rest of his salary next season. There is zero reason to believe that either he or his representation would do anyone any favors by taking less money than he is owed.

At this point you have to figure that an additional $2 million dollars is well-worth sending Curry on his way, but should he manage to stay healthy for the rest of the season, couldn’t he be of some use next year, especially when there are sure to be vacant roster spots to fill?

Yeah, on second thought, I’ll take the $2 million in cap space.

Then the focus would have to be dealing Jared Jeffries.

  • the oak

Eddy Curry is a joke. He wants playing time based on what? Certainly not his playing ability. He is not good enough to be on an NBA court right now.

If I was LeBron James I would go to management and demand Jared Jeffries, fully knowing that next year he goes to NY, thus more cap space to bring a friend along.

  • BiggieSmalls

yet another example of the coach’s lack of communications skills..

Both between the coach and the players and the coach and the GM…

the GM said the other day (according to Hahn)

Donnie Walsh said he sees Eddy Curry and Nate Robinson playing again “down the road . . . it’s not like I think they’re going to sit there all year,”

    now the coach says

“” The circumstances are not real adjustable right now. He doesn’t give us a chance to win as much as he should and it’s not his fault. We do not want to change the way we are playing. Jonathan allows us to be able to do that.

someone mind explaining that mind boggling statement.

    I hate this coach.

  • Magik_Trick

He wants playing time based on his hardwork to get back into shape, but that holds no weight with me….you shouldn’t be rewarded for doing something your suppose to have always done, and thats staying in shape

And this is dumb, Curry is not gonna get bought out, no ones gonna trade for him, and hes not gonna opt out…were stuck with him….

  • potaracke

With Curry, we’re screwed. Let’s all just start the 12 steps now…

  • Mucha

lol have you seen Hahn’s latest trade suggestion?

The Knicks trade Jeffries to the Cavaliers for Ilgauskas. So the Cavs give us more money to sign LeBron James?

  • bmathews77

We can’t win with Eddy Curry. He does not fit this system and hardly any system anymore. When Curry did get some playing time from his return, he proved that he only hurts this teams chances to win. When they try to dump the ball down low to him it causes turnovers when Curry does get the ball in the post he turns it over.
We all know that Curry won’t do a buyout, he needs that money. His own home was foreclosed and he will never see this kind of money again from an NBA team unless Isiah Thomas comes back to the league.
Unfortunately we are stuck with Eddy Curry but he will just rot on the bench and that’s fine with me as long as he shuts his big mouth up. He is a waste of size.
Our best shot at relieving more cap space is trading Jared Jeffries but the problem with that is every GM in the league knows that Walsh wants to unload him.

  • itzyung1

Donnie never said play down the road for the Knicks !!!! lol
All of us know its a long season For example just last month we thought this season was over and everyone was panicking now its looking up and everyone is a little more optimistic. Eddy and Nate will probably get another chance to play

  • BiggieSmalls

yu can minimize it all you want but you can not deny the mixed messages being delivered by both sides — Coach and GM

  • nyknicksfan

Why aren’t we sending J Hill to the d-league it could rly help him and Morris Almonds is playing well if a trade does go down he would be a good fit(I know this article isnt about that but just wanted to throw it out there)

  • bmathews77

I think they both want Nate and Eddy gone though….

‘Donnie Walsh said he sees Eddy Curry and Nate Robinson playing again “down the road . . . it’s not like I think they’re going to sit there all year,”

Translation: Donnie Walsh see’s them playing down the road on another team.

  • bmathews77

I was wondering the exact same thing about Jordan Hill for some time now. Why not send him to the d-league so he can get better. They keep saying how raw he is thats why he cant play….so why not send him to the d-league so he can get better? He’s just wasting his time not playing on the bench.

  • they chose me

Don’t buy him out– he will be an asset next year to acquire a third peice. Quite a large expiring contract. Its amazing how once the year ends his value will go from nothing to pretty high.

Regarding his complaints– he sounds like a child. He wants to be rewarded for getting in game shape, yet wants no punishment for being out of shape for two years. Appearantly that contract is only binding for one side.

  • DWknickfan

Maybe they are not sending Hill to the D league because they are worried about him hurting his trade value even more.

I think the Knicks are worrying about winning and playing Curry is just not going to get you any additional wins.

Giving Curry credit for bering in shape reminds me of a Chris Rock saying, “I take care of my kids…….your supposed to take care of them!”

Curry gets paid millions of dollars, he should always be in shape to play his best. After playing basketball for at least 15-20 years, the man still can’t pass out of a double team. He has no basketball IQ and doesn’t have a blue collar attitude. I understand he migh break the floor at the Garden, but when have you ever seen Curry dive for a ball? As bad as Duhon can play ( he’s
not a starting PG), at least he plays hard.

That is what seperates Nate as well. Nate plays with tons of energy, but I don’t know if I would say he plays hard all of the time. He falls asleep too many times and you rarely see him work consistently hard on the defensive end.

Maybe that is why we love the Douglasses an the Landrys, because we know they would play 120% percent ALL the time, regardless of the situation. That is what NY is all about, maybe not the Red section ;-) . This is why we love John Starks, a guy who was bagging groceries and we love our homegrown, superstar from no where players like Anthony Mason. Hate to say it, but the guy who plays closest to that in this team is JJ. If we can trade Currey (highly unlikely), I wouldn’t mind keeping JJ for next year.

  • illsun

Hey guys, do you rememebr watching this reality docu-drama on Eddy Curry back when he was in highschool ?? it was back in 2001.
I remember watching it and loving it.
Little did i know that kid would be on the knicks and would be our main stumbling block.

    http://www.paragonmarketing.biz/work/tv-production/documentary-style/preps.asp

  • illsun

thats the link to the documentary i was talking about. its not spam, promise.

  • itzyung1

    Because Knick fans will riot.
WHAT OUR 8TH PICK IS IN THE D-League AND BRANDON JENNINGS IS OUT HERE STARTIN!!!!

  • SpaceMan

a max contract start at 30% of the cap.it doesn’t matter how much capsace you have.if you have 15 or 16 million in capspace you can sign a “max” free agent depending on the cap.and eddy would be smart to take the buyout next year.if he decides not to i hope d’antoni doesn’t play him at all next year.embarrass his ass out of the league.

  • Mal

Although monetary wise I think Eddy must move on in order for us to get better. BUT I think he deserves playing time, yea its Eddy and managements fault for his so-so get in shpae program last summer. He should have been sent to Tim Grover but that didnt happen but let the Hulk play.

Darko should have been allowed significant minutes which never happen, I just dont agree with player management on this team, it started last year with (sorry to bring up the name) Steph and physically and mentally he was never the same after. its obvious Nate is done, I just dont like how cats are put in purgatory

  • x-man

Could you please name the Knicks that have a good b-ball IQ? Our Knicks passes up shots to give the ball to Jeffries behind the Arc.

How long before Al Hanginontherim shows up for another cameo?

At end of games, the offense strategy is “Ini mini miny mo” and usually Jefffries and AL wins!

If you understand the Don Nelson principles, and our coach is Don Nelson Lite (with a little taste of Isiah), you would note that Nelson hated having Ewing the centerprice of the offense and D’Antonii now has Curry to copy that off off. However, D’Antonti uses Isiah logic to explain his reasoning.

I think we’re gonna see Tracy McGrady and no Lebron!

  • Knicks4life

Wow. Big difference between Patrick Ewing and Eddie Curry.

Don Nelson felt Ewing was getting older and wouldn’t adapt his game to his system so he wanted to trade him for Shaq or some younger mobile pieces while he still had some value.

Eddie Curry doesn’t play because he doesn’t fit in the system but also because he has no idea how to play defense, rebound or block a shot. He deserves to be exactly where he is.

  • x-man

Come on Biggie, You’re holding back! Admit this coach is more like Isiah than anyone originally thought. lol

This coach rationalize and communicates like Isiah and his results or Isiah like as well. Once D’Antoni make the playoffs here once, the image will be cemented. lol

Isiah is down coaching in FL Intl (supposedly for free) and promising that school that he will take them to the final four in x number of years. Little do they know, they should have asked him “Final Four on which end?”

Truly, if you paid attention to Isiah while he was here, you would be p-i-s-s-ed that we have another bulls-h-i-t-er with no coaching rings on his resume.

  • x-man

lol Yeah I know,. Curry is the closest thing we have to Ewing! lol

But remember, Nelson liked to run instead of having a stagnant post up game. Nelson wanted to runt he offense thru Mason which he new would get under Ewing skin. Little did he know, Ewing would get Van Gundy his start as coach!

Believe it or not, although I do think Curry should sit and shut up, Curry fits this so-called system better now with his weight lost. Our Knicks have no presence in the paint, offensive or defensive.

Curry does look better movement wise but he’s had his chance for years and he always came in out of shape and apathetic. It’s time to move on and play the youth now.

But theoretically, our Knicks could use Curry to play inside/out. As it stands now, we all totally a perimeter time with a pt guard that can’t play either.

  • bob go knicks

isaiah didnt have the balls to bench anyone

  • EQ1217

According to Chad Ford, these are 10 of the worst draft picks from the past decade and it reads like the 2009 Knicks Summer League Roster.

    1. Darko Milicic, Detroit Pistons, No. 2 overall in 2003
    2. Kwame Brown, Washington Wizards, No. 1 overall in 2001
    3. Nikoloz Tskitishvili, Denver Nuggets, No. 5 overall in 2002

New Nuggets GM Kiki Vandeweghe famously drafted Tskiitshvili without ever actually seeing him play. Vandeweghe had been the guy behind Dirk Nowitzki’s development in Dallas and based on Mike D’Antoni’s glowing reports about Skita (D’Antoni was Tskitishivili’s head coach in Italy), Vandeweghe decided to gamble.

    4. Adam Morrison, Charlotte Bobcats, No. 3 overall in 2006 — over B Roy
5a. Marvin Williams, Atlanta Hawks, No. 2 overall in 2005 — over Chris Paul
5b. Shelden Williams, Atlanta Hawks, No. 5 overall in 2006 — over R Rondo
    6. Yaroslav Korolev, Los Angeles Clippers, No. 12 overall in 2005
    7. Fran Vasquez, Orlando Magic, No. 11 overall in 2005
    8. Rafael Araujo, Toronto Raptors, No. 8 overall in 2004
    9. Greg Oden, Portland Trail Blazers, No. 1 overall in 2007 — over K Durant
    10. Jordan Hill, New York Knicks, No. 8 overall in 2009 — over B Jennings

This one, too, may be a bit premature. We are only a third of the way into the season and big men, especially big men like Hill, take longer to develop. However Hill can’t find any minutes on a lottery team while Jennings has been terrific in the early going. Given Jennings’ strong play it seems like a stretch to say that the Knicks drafted the right guy.

It could be a costly mistake. The Knicks are trying to lure LeBron James as a free agent this coming summer. They need to convince LeBron that they have enough young talent around him to make them contenders. Having Jennings on the roster could make a pretty impressive case. Hill? Not so much

  • trenttucker

The sad truth is that this is how all the phone calls go:

Donne Walsh calls another GM –

Walsh: “Hi, we want to get rid of Curry and can give you some talent if you take him.”
    Other GM: “Gallinari.”
    Walsh: “Sigh.”

The only way we can get rid of Curry is to send Gallo with him. Otherwise, a team would have to be out of their mind to take the useless, expensive Curry. I don’t think we can trade Gallo, because I believe he can be a star. He’s obviously a good shooter (although he has his bad patches), but what I love most is that he does the other things well: he can drive (when he wants to), he moves his feet on D, he actually makes blocks on the guy he is D’ing up (a rarity — most NBA blocks come from help defense), and he never complains to the ref (this is huge — if he keeps this up he will be one of those players the refs protect). But I have to admit that if someone said they would take Curry AND Jefferies along with Gallo, I would have to strongly consider it, because it would mean Chris Bosh/Amare/Dirk, along with a better chance of getting Lebron/Joe Johnson — not a bad deal.

Our only option for cap space is to trade Jefferies, which will still be difficult. Yeah, he’s not bad, but he makes more money than he should in the current market. If I were another team, I would only take him with a) David Lee, b) Jordan Hill, or C) Gallo (we can’t do that).

  • gbaked

    LOL!:) WINZ!!!!1!111!!! OMG

  • gbaked

    that list is crazy.

putting a #12 pick overall as a worst draft pick is crazy, 12 is very low on the board in the end end many many many 12 picks dont work out.

    Same with all the 11s

Putting Hill at 8 is very premature. He may not turn out to be great, but saying he is a bust is way too soon.

  • gbaked

    spoken like a true hater.

  • Knicks4life

I think Jordan Hill has zero trade value at this point. Any team trading for Lee (or Robinson for that matter) is taking a huge gamble because they could leave next year for nothing. A team trading for Jeffires would have to . . .gulp . . . actually really like his game enough to want him on their roster next year.

  • bob go knicks

he didnt,…remember when he took a vote from the players about marbury?and Marbury said”he aint benchin me,i have too much stuff on him”…well if i remember correctly, marbury was starting the very next day….that has nothing to do with hating….and please could everyone stop using that pre-pubescent word?

  • bob go knicks

Longer to develop?some of the big men on that list are prolly still developing……Kwame Brown…..Darko…etc.

  • x-man

lol more like Walsh saying : “Hi, we want to get rid of Curry and can give you some Tylenol if you take him.”

Anyone think we’re gonna win against the Pistons to-nite?

Lucy has go the football all teed up for ya! lol

  • bmathews77

For Chad Ford to add Jordan Hill to that list gives me the impression that 1 he did not really do his homework because there are a hell of a lot of real busts that have played more than a few months and 2 goes to show you that ESPN are Knick haters.
There’s alot of other guys that should be on there. How about Marcus Fizer with the 4th overall pick in 2000 by the Bulls? How about Robert Swift with the 12th pick in 2004 by the Sonics? Patrick O’Bryant with the 9th pick in 2006 draft by the Warriors!

Give Jordan Hill at least a year of playing time before calling him a bust!

  • x-man

What happened to Frederic Weis? He was our 15th draft pick in the 1st round.

  • BrooklynKnicks

Maybe this can be a solution… (found here: http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=14805)

    ———————————–
Time To Write Some Checks? Before you get too worked up over the possibilities of Knicks’ center Eddy Curry being bought out from the Knicks, it’s important to understand that Curry’s 2010-2011 contract option kicks in automatically when waived, locking his $11.2 million on the Knicks salary cap number for next summer.

That does not mean the Knicks are not exploring options to solve some of their problems with their checkbook.

Marc Berman of the New York Post is reporting that both Eddy Curry and disgruntled guard Nate Robinson are both open to the idea of a contract buyout, the question remains at what price?

The Knicks could part with Robinson without much long-term damage. Curry however could attempt to “amend” his contract, however the league frowns heavily on deals that reduce what a player is paid, making a deal with Curry far more complex.

The Collective Bargaining Agreement is fairly clear that a contract can not be negotiated downward, but there has been some speculation that Curry could mutually waive his 2010-2011 option guarantee as part of a buyout.

HOOPSWORLD’s Larry Coon, who also does a blog over at the New York Times covered this situation recently saying:

“In order to have Curry completely off the books, they could mutually amend his contract to eliminate the option completely. If they do this and then the Knicks waive Curry, his entire buyout amount would be charged to the Knicks’ cap this season. None of his salary would count against their cap next summer.

Here is where the sacrifice comes in. If they eliminate Curry’s option year, his buyout amount would be limited to his remaining 2009-10 salary. He would not be able to receive any of the $11.3 million for 2010-11. ”
    ———————————

and perhaps curry next year is more valuable than he is a liability this season. someone here did say that he will be a large expiring contract as well as potential gaps in the rotation…

  • bmathews77

Ford’s list is only draft bust’s from within the past 10 years. Weis was drafted in 1999

If Ford was going to get a Knick draft bust on that list he should’ve put Mike Sweetney (9th pick in 2003) instead of Jordan Hill who has barely played in his ROOKIE year to show what he has.

  • Mucha

    EPSN = Knicks haters.

The Knicks have played only 30 games in what is Hill’s rookie season and he’s already one of the biggest busts of the decade? Now that is nice! Open your Bible Chad Ford!

    ESPN… terrible once again, terrible.

  • trenttucker

Larry Coon’s info is incomplete. The NBA Players Association website says you can buyout up to half the value of an option year. However, than means a) you take a salary cap hit in that year (2010-11) for half the value of the full option and b) that Eddy Curry would forfeit that amount ($5.65 million — not happening).

  • bmathews77

Yep, no way in hell that Curry will forfeit any money. His house was foreclosed and that’s just way too money for him to give up because he will never see a contract this big again. He’ll be back on the Big Mac diet this summer and will have gained over 60lbs….

  • krayziehustler

that;s not a fair assessment curry has done everything we asked him this year and lost massive weight, who are you to jump and say he will gain over summer..

he has been through allot which lead to the over eating, but now he just wants to prove himself, he is too naturally talented to be jerome james

While I don’t agree that ESPN are “knick haters”
You bring up alot of much bigger draft busts.

I think what we should take from this is that NY is such a big marketplace that everything is magnified. A Jordan Hill entry, while not as accurate as Fizer or Swift, would draw alot more eyes and comments.

so.. GO NY GO NY GO !

and people think that the city in which you lay doesnt matter in todays internet age. it most certainly does!

  • DinnerDog

Yeah, this seems pretty obvious to me. A 10 million dollar expiring contract? That’s not as good as cap space, but that will get you a Troy Murphy/Rip Hamilton/Jamison caliber player at the trade deadline next year.

There’s only 10 lotteries in the decade. The fact that he’s not getting playing time on a team that was IN the lottery and is undoubtedly headed BACK to the lottery, doesn’t make Hill look good. Most people taking those things into account (aside from Knick fans and the organization’s PR department) would consider that proof of him being a bust.

I hope it’s just a case of playing for an ignorant and stubborn coach.

  • x-man

You get labeled a hater because you speak “real talk”! lol

  • CircleLimit4

First of all I find it comical that a player can be called a bust in his first 1/3 of a season, especially when he isn’t even getting court time. Of course if the Knicks could do it again they’d pick someone else, but come on!

2nd of all, Chad Ford himself said the Knicks picked the best available player with Jordan Hill. What a bafoon.
