Recap: Knicks 104 Pistons 87

by Tommy Dee on December 29th, 2009 at 9:56 pm

BOX SCORE

This was the best game the Knicks played, in my mind, all season. From jump the team controlled the game and never gave the Pistons the chance to establish any sort of rhythm offensively. Once again, the team made shots to stop an runs from happening, and the team led by as many as 17 points in the 4th quarter. Simply put, it was their best all-around performance over 48 minutes this season.

David Lee again was the best player on the floor on the offensive end. He created second shots with 4 offensive rebounds and finished with a game-high 30 points.

Obviously, when you are talking about Mike D’Antoni’s offense you have to point to FG% and the Knicks, as a team, shot 52%. It’s a simple thought, but the team is shooting a shade under 45% for the season, good for 20th in the NBA.

I have no idea why D’Antoni chose not to go to the bench at the end of the game. It would seem that the players could use the rest heading into New Jersey tomorrow.  It will be fodder for the D’Antoni detractors, especially if the team comes out flat tomorrow, which is unfortunate because everyone should be talking about the solid win in the Motor City.

Should the team continue to push towards the 8th seed, games like this, road games against teams in a similar position, are critical.

  • BiggieSmalls

How about his #8 pick tweeting at half time?

Maybe the bench players didnt have their uniforms on under their sweats.

  • Dave the Rave

Great win and great turnaround after 0 and 9 start!

    D’A knows what he’s doing.

New slower half-court system is working.

Everyone is running the offense superbly. Wwe haven’t seen this since the Van Gundy years.

    9-man rotation looks good.

But Duhon seems to be slowing down and has no legs. Is he breaking down already?

    Defense is happening.

Lee is a force on offense.

    Chandler’s all-round game is blossoming.

Even Jeffries is playing well — shocker!

Lee’s defense is better, and with Jeffries and Gallo blocking shots he’s ok as a PF.

This team still needs a center.

I think Bender was a flash in the pan. I doubt that his knees will hold up, but we shall see.

The Knix are one of the top 15 best in the league now. Do I hear top 12?

If DW can pull off a great trade this might get interesting.

Get rid of N8 and Curry!!!

Worst trade of the decade: Dumars dumping Billups — a monumental blunder.

    Go Knix!

  • Knicks4life

Tommy its not just the Nets game tomorrow night the Knicks have three games in four night.

Tought to criticize the team too much though. They played really well.

  • BiggieSmalls

    Kelly trip just nailed it..

Hughes/Douglas and Bender were one for 10..

essentially getting production from 6 guys..

but lets pop the champs cause we beat a team on a seven game skid..

oh yeah.. and the #8 pick managed to get a tweet off.. so add that in.

  • totti

Gallo is great and Lee is the prophet.

  • Knicks4life

Ha ha, D’Antoni said the team won because the just hit shots. Lol. No mention of defense.

I said this in the other thread but this team has to come up with something to break the full court press. We looked ugly there and against faster younger teams that can press us for longer it might be serious trouble. Especially on Jan. 1 against the Hawks after Duhon does his usual “celebrating”.

  • CircleLimit4

You’re really running off a cliff with this tweet thing. Fire D’antweeti!

  • Knicks4life

Was that David Lee or Larry Bird? Lol.

  • Hydr0

If that’s true, he should be suspended.

  • CircleLimit4

They’ve been playing decent defense for the past few games. The difference was the shots falling. The glaring omission was not defense but that they won it because they took more high percentage shots instead of 3′s.

  • Hydr0

the knicks trading for eddy curry was worse than the billips trade

  • Mucha

Impressive win from a psychological standpoint. I didn’t think the Knicks were mentally tough enough to win this game.

Wilson Chandler was sensational tonight, his midrange jumpshot is gorgeous and he’s starting to understand how to play with his back to the basket when a smaller defender is on him. Gallinari shot the ball well from downtown (finally), he didn’t play particularly well offensively otherwise but he did a good job on the defensive end (he was actually better than Chandler who struggled against Hamilton even though Rip was cold tonight).

And Al Harrington played extremely well in my opinion, he didn’t try to do too much this time. Don’t overlook his performance. But what about Larry Hughes? He’s a liability on the floor hopefully he’ll find a way to contribute in the near future.

David Lee played like an All-Star tonight. 30-10 is impressive, really impressive. I also like the fact that he’s not a ball-hog. He still needs to play better defense, obviously the Pistons have no inside threat but the fact that Lee watched Stuckey jump and shoot in front of him in the 4th quarter is not acceptable. He played incredibly well tonight though.

Gotta beat the Nets – we can’t afford to lose this one. We just can’t.

  • Mucha

    haha

  • CircleLimit4

    Hahah I caught that.

Lee is Bird if he’s within 20 feet of the Detroit basket. Everywhere else he’s David Lee.

  • Dave the Rave

Biggie, is there a gray cloud stuck over yer head? Get some sunshine!

    : )

  • Mucha

I’m more concerned about David Lee breaking down than Chris Duhon.

I don’t think the Billups trade was intrinsically bad for the Pistons, but the fact that they traded Billups just to sign Gordon and Villanueva is ridiculous. Terrible. Isiah-ish.

Some teams need to realize that they are not going anywhere – no stupid free agent signing, just capspace and lottery picks.

  • BiggieSmalls

Lets not forget about Bender getting five minutes and Hughes getting 7…

No worried.. we have a game tomorrow..

welcome to the seven players or less offense.

  • Hydr0

We’re also only one game out of the 8th seed in the playoffs in late december. That’s not too bad, especially since our horrendus start. Maybe we can be a little happy about that, can’t we? Or should we just be pissed instead?

  • BiggieSmalls

Sorry if yous ee it that way..

I gave up on this season weeks ago.. Just like the coach and GM did..

  • Mucha

Hughes and Bender were terrible tonight.

We needed to get this W period, more minutes for both would have hurt the Knicks.

  • CircleLimit4

Detroit has very little inside presence, and we continued our impressive perimeter D. You can kinda tell Tayshaun’s back isn’t 100%, that helped too.

Good win by the Knicks, but it was also a bad loss by Detroit. Knicks are on the right track but still have a way to go.

  • CircleLimit4

Also D’antoni not giving out garbage minutes is inexcusable.

  • Knicks4life

Nah I don’t think D’Antoni gave up on the season at all.

At one point Isiah stopped holding practices and stopped arguing fall calls on the sidelines. Now that is giving up on a season and team.

Walsh threw in the towel on this season when he didn’t sign a PG and drafted Hill at 8.

  • Realist_Knick_Fan

“This was the best game the Knicks played, in my mind, all season.”

Sorry – I’m still going with the beat down on Phoenix. JMO

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

I will ask about the tweeting from the Knicks PR people.

    Obviously unacceptable.

  • BiggieSmalls

good post Dave bit it is really a seven man rotation when you consider Bender played 5 and Hughes seven minutes.

  • BiggieSmalls

have you guys ever actually seen Larry Bird play?

  • HaS

Maybe he’s been ordered to develop his thumbs along with his legs?

  • itzyung1

Im with him and it was Gallo’s most impressive game to me.

  • DVJ

    Short rotation = More Wins

    In Dantoni We Trust!!

What happens when we beat the Nets tomorrow with the same rotation? Will you still bitch and complain?

  • HaS

Maybe they’ve got Bird mixed up with Sparrow?

    http://hoopedia.nba.com/index.php?title=Rory_Sparrow

  • CircleLimit4

I can’t speak for K4L but I was under the influence of sarcasm. Tripuka asked “Was that David Lee or Larry Bird?” in the post game analysis. I was mocking him.

  • Knicks4life

I was quoting Kelly T. You missed the sarcasm.

  • Knicks4life

Yes beating the mighty Nets will surely shut up the haters. [yes that is sarcasm].

  • KFFL

    hey, can we get McGrady?
u guys think he’ll be a good fit?

yeah, yeah, he hasn’t gone past the first round blah, blah, blah,

    will the numbers work?

  • Big Daddy

I have to disagree those trades were different.

This team is lost without Billups, it’s depressing to watch these guys without their leader. Like lost puppies. The worst trade in Detroit history and why was Billups even traded?

They are a bunch of talented guys without any team personality nor direction, no leadership.

  • ds2488

Great wire to wire win, this was one of the best all season for sure. Thats what playoff teams do, they dominate weaker teams like that. No complaints, Gallo and Chandler were both good, but Lee continues to play out of his mind right now. Just amazing. Biggie makes a good point, but come on man, Bender and Hughes both suck right now and when they were in the game got close. I would like to see you be happy with a win for once.

  • HaS

I predict Jordan Hill gets a DNP-CD against the Nets for tweeting at halftime.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

    i’m go9ng krazy rite now
i only got to watch the first half
    had to step out.

i think if the knick make the 8seed
they will win the championship just a big hunch.

lee is the best player in ny since marbury.

lee will go down as the best white p.f of all time.

    i’m loving it rite now

danni boy it’s another vote from me for coach of the decade
this guy is winning with nash aka the real coach of the suns squad.

    2morow will be another will.

    3 cups of kool aid

    THAT TASTE GGGRREEATTT

  • Knicks4life

As opposed to the other DNP-CDs he has been collecting for absolutely sucking?

  • CircleLimit4

Reminds me of a blooper I saw back in the day where a live bird got into the arena and was chilling on the court. The commentator quipped “Is that a Larry Bird or Rory Sparrow fan?”

  • Knicks4life

Lee the best white PF in history?

Just in case you weren’t being sarcastic tell that to Tom Chambers, Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Dave Debusschere and Dirk Nowitzki.

  • ds2488

Haha, HaS I have a feeling that you are right. Hey, at least Jordan Hill has something in common with Brandon Jennings now. Hilarious, you see why are you guys complaining about Hill? They both tweet as well when they shouldn’t. Haha.

  • theghostofwillisreed

sorry to say dagawd is an idiot.

biggie, you’re spreading the knick haterade a bit thick. you don’t get extra points for being the contrarian.

before you respond with calling me a kool-aid drinker, i will say that i’m one of the people who don’t see the knicks making the playoffs but probably falling just short. what i do expect and am seeing is the development of gallo and ill will which should definitely make one of the big free agents think twice about overlooking new york as their next and hopefully last stop.

everyone knows it’s not about this year. it’s about the offseason and getting the team looking like they are only a superstar short of something big which just happens where they are now. a team that is tarting to gel but is missing “the man”.

the “critiques” just come as nothing as ludmouthed, holier-than-thou speak and really isn’t any different than blatant and blind homerism.

  • theghostofwillisreed

that last part should hav read “the “critiques” just come across as nothing more than…”

  • traps9

    Now, THAT was funny.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

    MAN
i was out an they told me the knicks won
    i went planters

  • Hydr0

Yes, both trades hurt the teams in a different ways. We will see the real damage to the eddy curry trade after the free agency period this summer. Let’s see who we miss because eddy curry’s contract will eat up $11.2 million cap space. Then let’s see which trade is worse.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

    bird was a small
    dirk isn’t american white

    an tom was alrite
    lee would kill dave
kevin mchale i would destroy mchale

  • Mucha

    ROTFL

    Brilliant

Post of the year candidate with bob’s kool-aid recipe lol

  • run-tmc

U miss the game, but never the blog, ey hot shot?

  • BiggieSmalls

Lebron would be better served signing with Oklahoma City.. With that supporting cast he will win 10 rings.

and what of the development of the 8th pick in last years draft?

  • CircleLimit4

The Billups trade was about cap space. They figured their ship had sailed with an aging Billups under a long contract and started rebuilding. Where they messed up was how they used their cap last summer. They didn’t fix their hole at the 5 and overpaid for a 2 despite overpaying Hamilton and overpaid a 4 after drafting Daye and Jerebko.

  • itzyung1

    lol @ dirk.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

the blog i can log in anytime an comment
    ok small shot

  • run-tmc

    Pick up a TiVo, dude.
U seem to have enough time on your hands.

  • Knicks4life

Why do people here question me:

“Bird started at small forward and power forward for thirteen seasons, teaming with legendary center Robert Parish and forward Kevin McHale.”

  • ds2488

Thanks Mucha, but nothing compares to Bob’s Kool-Aid recipe. That was the best by a mile. Haha.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

there isn’t anything i would like to rewatch
    i got espn for that..

  • BiggieSmalls

howo could the Pistons have expected to get anything from either Daye or the Swede?

It takes time to develop big men after the draft.. or soI m told.

  • Randy B.

There really wasn’t much garbage time. Only an 11 point lead with 4 minutes left. These are young guys playing 35 – 40 minutes. I’m sute that they will be fine vs. the Nets.

There are folks on here that have predicted a Nets victory vs. the Knicks each game this year and will probably do so if the Knicks win tomorrow.

Just enjoy tonight’s win and worry about tomorrow- tomorrow.

BTW, I’m starting to think that we need to keep Lee.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

    why would i hate?
    i’m a krazy knick fan
if u could of only seen the planters
look in had on my face
    when i foundout they won..

    guys an gals remember
    d.w already make his deal
    2010 summer it will be
so don’t look for no blockbuster trades in feb ok or even b4..

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

    lee is a keeper
    but he will seek
    10-20 mill…

  • run-tmc

    Yeah – I got you.
You’re loose and removed from everything –
except for talking game on this blog.

  • CircleLimit4

Well CV has been hobbled for a lot of the season. Their rookies have been thrown into the fire and the Pistons drafted well, especially with Jerebko. Knicks didn’t. What do you want me to tell you?

  • BiggieSmalls

    Stubborn is a better descriptor

  • DVJ

Only a matter of time before we ship or buyout both Nate and Curry.

    The T-Mac situation is interesting.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

    ma bad
i was saying larry tird was a small

your correct larry nerd did play power some of the time

  • CircleLimit4

    HaS?

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

i think nate will get a buyout
but curry i’m not 2 sure

i would buyout curry for 6.5 mill
if he didn’t want that that let him ride the bench

can’t give away money to a guy like that

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

i didn’t see the game i would of commented on it
    buddy.

    lets go knicks..

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

sorry to bust every1′s bubble but i think the cavs might get mcgrady.

the knicks are not getting anything until 2010 summer ok.

mcgrady on the knicks is like wishing the knick signed A.i

  • Dave the Rave

True. This team is functioning well but injuries will happen, they always do. DA is a madman for working his core players so hard. I guess he expects to get a few more players he likes in the coming years and have a bigger rotation and is too stubborn to play the guys he’s not crazy about now. If he does wear them out and the team sux in the spring he’ll be hearing about it.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

    wrong thread.

damm kool aid messed me ip

  • Dave the Rave

Lee has looked more like Dave DeBusschere the last 2 games on offense and rebounding. What PF has has such a high shooting percentage?

  • Dave the Rave

I don’t think DW threw in the towel by drafting Hill. He wanted a tall rebounder and rightly so and many teams were high on Hill, but DW blew it, that is if you want instant production from a 21-yr old who played only 3 yrs in college. Mistakes in judgment happen. DW did not sign a PG because no great ones are available and Duhon is under contract, and he surely knows he needs to get a superstar.

  • Dave the Rave

I doubt that DW and D’A want to rock the boat by bringing in a past superstar who needs to shoot the rock 20 times a game. They have had enough of egos and want to build an unselfish team with youth. Does McGrady have any reputation for unselfish team play?

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

    lol

  • Dave the Rave

Not sure if it’s what you’re drinking or smoking, but you surely have supernatural powers and are making lots of sense. Are you the one and only God of Knowledge?

  • Dave the Rave

Hey, don’t leave out Rudy T.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

na me an my brothers are the only 1′s

  • Dave the Rave

You had a planters look in had on your face? This sounds serious. Call 911.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

    sorry ma bad

mayb he will be as good as rudy T was..

  • bob go knicks

would you feel better if we had lost? we just blew out a team at their home floor, and your mad because they only used 7 guys to do it?

  • bob go knicks

yeah, those two guys seem way too smart for that(SARCASM)

  • bob go knicks

    David Lee is white?

  • bob go knicks

If david Lee is white, then how come he doesnt play defense?

  • CircleLimit4

    I agree.

  • gordons18

what i liked most today was the maturity and poise the team showed. D’antoni is a hell of a coach and is doing a great a job of teaching these guys how to play the right way. David looks like a second coach on the floor now and is playing and sounding like a leader for the first time in his career. great to see some team-basketball back in the garden.

i’m hoping nate can learn to play defense the way D’antoni wants him to because Duhon could really use some relief before he wears down like he did last season, and douglas just doesn’t have the offensive abilities that Nate does.

  • x-man

lol You hit the nail on the head. Anyone who has played competitive b-ball at any level, knows that coaches usually fo out of their way to praise the defense. Everyone like to shoot the ball and there is only one ball but EVERYONE can play defense.

I saw this in this coach from day one in that he always focus on the offense. Yes, our Knicks have been playing moderate defense lately and you would think the coach would be pumping up the players in this category.

I’ll sure take the win but this is a BIG NO NO with the coach!

  • x-man

You better put on your Helmet before Mr. Kool-aid knock ya down. lol

We have beaten teams we should beat now and that is good but let’s not get things twisted.

Like I’ve said all along. Each year we go thru this and in about 15 games from now. We will be 5-10 in those games at best.

Lucy has got the best gig in town. Charlie is always a repeating customer no matter what!

    Goodnight Charlie. lol

  • bob go knicks

hey its only hoops man,it isnt like they’re actually working

  • Hydr0

Yeah, the pistons lost 8 games in a row with those guys playing. That’s awesome! I’m so jealous LOL

  • mr.gee21

Each year we go through this? When was the last year we won ten games in a month? (yeah, I am predicting a win over the Nets — although I guess that is drinking koolaid, too?)

  • HaS

    He’s a Center. Remember?

  • HaS

“As opposed to the other DNP-CDs he has been collecting for absolutely sucking?”

He doesn’t suck. His legs are developing for next year.

  • Dave the Rave

He’s a PF playing the high post. Not my idea of a “center.”

  • Dave the Rave

It’s smart to bring in a guy who has barely played in 2 yrs and had microfracture surgery and who has no track record for playing the style D’A has his team winning with now? How do you know McGrady can be even 75% of what he was? I think that Jeffries’ D is more valuable than T-Mac chucking for 20 points a game to this team.

  • HaS

So who’s playing Center for the Knicks?

  • HaS

    CircleLimit4?

  • gbaked

We started winning a few weeks ago! Why on earth would that be the time to give up on your team?

  • gbaked

defense has been solid for a while now, as stated above…

The knicks win when they hit their shots. When they dont, they lose.

  • gbaked

Hughes is gonna have to take a couple nights off. The difference between him pre/post injury is huge.

  • gbaked

I am even surprised by this.

I dont know how Hill and Landry, at the very least did not get in there.

  • gbaked

no. he wont win 10 rings in Oklahoma City… I mean, I suppose there is a chance they would become one of the greatest teams in all of sport history, but that seems a bit thick.

  • CircleLimit4

It reads like ds2488 is trying to take credit for your witty comment.

  • Dave the Rave

no one. they either have 3 or 4 forwards on the floor at once. No low post.

  • HaS

Oh, LOL!. Nah, I don’t have any alter egos on here. I’m glad Heri/GreatScott/Thall has taken a hiatus.
