Deal For McGrady!

by Tommy Dee on December 30th, 2009 at 9:55 am

The following piece was submitted by Chris Ippolito. As always, we encourage all Knick fans and fans of TKB to put pen to paper and submit your thoughts to theknicksblog@gmail.com.

The Knicks have improved dramatically over the course of this season, even though they are a mere 30 games into it.  The emergence of D. Lee as a potential all-star, as well as the development of Gallinari, and D’Antoni’s decision to go to an 8 man rotation  have the Knicks playing their best basketball of the past 4 years.  With this in mind, any Knick fan is foolish if he or she believes that this team can finish any better than 8th in the conference.  The team simply lacks that game-changing player that leads a team to victory down the stretch of a close game. The recent two game losing streak, especially the Christmas Day game vs Miami, supports this notion.

Even if I’m wrong about what this current team has the capability of doing, it is safe to say that they are not winning a championship this season and without a first round draft pick, the main goal of this season has to be trying to trade Jared Jeffries and Eddy Curry.  The latter will be nearly impossible to trade, unless the Knicks include Gallinari or Chandler in a deal, which Donnie Walsh probably won’t even consider.  That leaves trading Jeffries as a huge priority for the Knicks GM.

It is only proper to give Jeffries his props.  He is a consummate professional, who has been a leader and relentless defender for the Knicks this season. Without him, the Knicks would probably have 3-5 less wins.  The Knicks will inevitably suffer defensively if he is traded.  That said, his contract needs to be moved if the Knicks want to position themselves adequately for next summer.

My idea is this…trade for Tracy McGrady.  Send the expiring deals of Harrington, and Cuttino Mobley, as well as Jeffries to the Rockets for the expiring deal of the beleaguered McGrady.  This trade worked numbers -wise on ESPN.com’s trade machine.  For the Rockets, they receive a good scoring option in Al Harrington and a lanky F/C in Jared Jeffries who would fit perfectly in their defense-first system.  The Knicks would receive McGrady who if healthy would be a go-to scorer for them down the stretch of this season.

When the Knicks were contemplating bringing in Allen Iverson, I was against it for the reason of not wanting to take shots away from our budding stars Gallinari and Chandler.  However, when the Knicks sign a big-name player in the off-season, whoever that may be,the two young guns will certainly have to hand-over shots.  In other words, signing a player like McGrady, who needs to have the opportunity to showcase his ability since he is a free agent as well next summer, will only help prepare Gallo and Chandler for their future with the Knicks.  Not to mention, Al Harrington shoots almost as much as a game-changing player anyway.

The Knicks would certainly suffer on the defensive end after losing Jeffries. Yet, the opening in the C position would open time up for the rookie Jordan Hill, who showed signs of terrific potential in his limited time earlier in the season.  If you ask me, at the very least, Hill can be a good rebounder and a hard-working defender right away. It would also perhaps open the door for Eddy Curry see more time as well, in-case the Knicks haven’t lost 100% hope in trading the miserable center.

This move may not make the Knicks better for this season.  However, trading Jeffries contract is something Walsh has wanted to do since he has been in New York.  With McGrady, the Knicks could acquire a player decimated by injuries who may not have much left in his tank.  On the other hand, they could acquire a guy hungry to earn a nice contract for the next 3-4 years and prove that he still deserves to be mentioned among the NBA’s best.  He is still only 30 years old. If McGrady has any pride or competitiveness whatsoever, he would be eager to prove his worth on basketball’s greatest stage.

The lineup would be Duhon, McGrady, Gallo, Lee, Bender/Hill/Curry with Hughes Chandler and Bender/Hill/Curry coming off the bench.  Although there is an obvious void at center, this lineup could potentially be explosive offensively.

Minus Jeffries, the Knicks could take a step backwards, but if a player of Tracy McGrady’s caliber is added to the roster, the Knicks have a better chance of making something of “the season before the summer”  than they would with the current roster.  At the least, bringing in McGrady for Jeffries and co. would certainly bring increased excitement to the 09-10 season and also put the team in better position for the summer.

  • TG

I hope they don’t. McGrady is done.

  • Dave the Rave

McGrady has barely played in 2 yrs and he had the dreaded microfracture surgery. I see BUST written all over that deal.

  • Tony

I would love to see this trade go down and I’m sure Walsh has proposed this kind of trade already to the Houston front office. The reason why this trade isn’t happening is that Houston DOES NOT want Jared Jeffries for the same reason the Knicks want to get rid of him. If they just let McGrady’s contract expire they’ll be in a position to sign an almost max player as well (according to hoopshype they will have about 40 mil in contracts for 2010, most teams are preparing for the cap to be around 52 to 55 mil, so with the 12-15 mil, the rockets are in a position to sign an impact player. With Jared Jeffries they are not). Plus they already have better versions of Jared Jeffries in Trevor Ariza and Carl Landry. As i said earlier, I would love to see this trade go down, but it’s simply not happening. (unless Isiah Thomas somehow infiltrates the Houston front office, which you know maybe he should. He owes us knicks fan big time.)
If Walsh really wants T-mac, why doesn’t he trade nate, mobley and milicic? Our players who sit on the bench for their players. Houston gets a potential sparkplug in Nate and since mobley’s contract is being paid by an insurance company so that’s 9 million dollars saved for the owner. The knicks get better without compromising their summer.

  • Knicks4life

I don’t think we should oversell what McGrady’s worth will be to this team. McGrady is a big expiring contract . Nothing more.

If he gives us that go to scorer it will be a pleasant suprise but from what I’ve seen McGrady is finished as an elite player in this league.

  • Knicks4life

But in order to do what you say they would have to rip their entire team apart (renouncing the rights to their free agents). And unlike us Houston actually has a good team.

  • BiggieSmalls

Houston has no need for Harrington.

They have Luis Scola at the PF and Battier/Ariza at the SF.

They are talking about getting Kevin Martin from SAC

Give it up… there is no shot at McGrady’s contract for garbage and expirings..
Morey is much smarter than that.
Morey would rather buy him out.. save the cap space and reload in 2010 with Yao…

  • JeffFinance123

I’ve figured out an absolute perfect three way trade. I hope Donnie Walsh reads this:

Chicago Bulls get Al Harrington and Nate Robinson
Houston Rockets get Brad Miller and Jared Jeffries
New York Knicks get Tracy McGrady

Rockets save $4 million in luxury tax money plus prorated portion of $4million in salaries rest of year. So that’s probably over $6 million total savings. Get two very useful players with size for rest of year and for playoffs. Only Jeffries has salary past 2010.

Bulls lose Miller, but get two impact scorers that they desperately need without taking on any 2010 salary. Bulls are known to really covet Harrington. Getting two scorers without giving up any core pieces is a big win.

Knicks open cap space for 2010 with this move and at same time get a “franchise player” the rest of the season. Probably hurts Knicks win total this season, but dumping Jeffries very worth it.

The math works all workds. Tried it in ESPN trade machine.

    Get it done, Walsh!!!!!!

  • Tony

True, then back to my first point: the trade is not happening.

  • Jack D

good idea. but deep down we know houston is not gonna take jeffries.

  • traps9

Walsh has said/implied several times that Mobley won’t be used. So, let’s scratch that. Jeffries/Hughes for T-Mac and see the response… Add in Jordan Hill. I think they could bite. TD has proposed the luxury tax angle, and it’s valid, but I don’t think it’s as important as getting talent back. If they’re gonna take on a guy like JJ, who is good but expensive, they’ll want a young talent. If they don’t like Hill and ask for Chandler, there’s no way I do that unless we’re talking moving Eddy Curry instead of Jeffries. Adding Nate to the pot makes no sense since HOU would save no money because of his BYC.

  • Mal

I have been a TMac from back in the day, I had him a notch below Kobe because of his softness/fragility. I’d love him as a Knick, it just depends how much of a shell is he at this point, those microfracture surgeries get trickier the older you get far as how a player responds. Kenyon Martin he says it took him like 3-years to finally feel like he got his hops back, Amare was a youngster, AL Houston and Penny really couldnt come back.

I really dont want to lose Al Buckets in this deal, I was wondering when Mike D kept Hughes out the second half was it because he is being prepared to be moved?

Heck since Mike D is just being a Mad Scientist right now tell DW to go ahead and bring in Tyrus Thomas to go along wit McGrady and let Shaun Livingston audition for the point guard spot. These all can be future pieces.

I must say Im impressed with David Lee’s improved jumper and battle attitude, his defense is still shaky but what do we want he is normally outsized every night. I do want to see him challenge shots with authority and not move out the way, Gallo challenges shots props to him, cmon Lee you can do that also.

  • traps9

As far as I’ve read, Morey won’t buy him out at all. But, yeah, your basic points are spot on.

  • JASONHAYES

How can u see bust, when you should be seeing more cap space!

  • Mal

I just think we or DW would look silly if were to add J Hill just for TMac and nothing else the #8 pick. That kid needs to be developed or send him to Chi for T Thomas.

I was down on Wilson early in the season but I think he was still hurt lately he is looking better, still shaky on decision-making but improving. Why do they keep saying Wilson is 6’8 maybe 6’6

  • trenttucker

If Darrel Morey gives up the incredible, wonderful thing that is Tracy McGrady’s gigantic, enormous expiring contract for anyone on the Knicks not named “Danilo Gallinari”, then he should have his head checked. And what Houston really needs is a 2 guard. Sadly, they should deal for Kevin Martin.

  • Mal

I guess we need to wait and see what transpires, we have been playing pretty good lately on DEFENSE, have we allowed a 100 points in awhile?

Any trades will be like last year we start taking two steps backwards until players gel BUT the ultimate goal is well worth as long as we dont lose certain players in this process

  • traps9

Who cares if you look silly? Oh, well. We messed up, but, now, we’re saving $9.5M and spending it next year on whatever. Hill’s money could go to Camby’s vet min and the rest be added to a Joe Johnson or Rudy Gay. Whatever. There are options, but the last thing DW needs to do is to be scared of what other people think. That’s not gonna set us up for ’10 the way we need to be.

  • traps9

    LOL. Fair point.

  • Big Daddy

The only 2 things this needs is a point guard who can actually play that position well. Even if he shares time with Duhon as a backup or starter putting Duhon in as a backup.

That would help this team get over some of it’s offensive issues, we have enough scoring.

The other thing would be to actually have a center. Granted, not a slow one who slows down an uptempo team but someone who is closer to 7 feet and has a little presence in the paint. I’m sure Batman and Robin(D’ant and Walsh) were hoping someone on the roster could do this but Milicic and Curry did not so they brought in Bender. Who is many games away from proving he can stay healthy and get into game shape and is a center.

With the improved DLee, Gallo and Chandler that would set this team up as a top contender. It sounds simple but so does ending global warming. What gets me angry sometimes is Al Buckets, who I see knows how to play and does when he feels like it, most times he does not and is a legend in his own mind. He really thinks he’s a superstar who never got a chance to be the man. Thank goodness his contract expires and I will never have to see him again in a Knick uniform.

And someone please tell Douglas who by the way I really like as a player to stop picking his nose.

I do hope Batman gives Jordan some playing time after the all star break. Let’s see if this guy can play. He has to start getting time to develop, you can’t develop siting on the bench game after game. This proved either Robin made a mistake or Batman thinks Hill is just not ready or a bust. Even Lee said if he did not get playing time as a rookie he would not have advanced as well as he did. Hill needs playing time to develop. Or he needs to dedicate himself in the off season to getting his body in shape and doing what Dwight Howard did, hit the weights work on your game too, he has about as much talent as a Howard but he was lazy this off season and came into the Summer League out of shape. No excuse for that and a mistake that a young man will make. I guess this is Batman’s way of adding a dunce cap to Hill too, so that Eddy, Nate and Hill are all sitting in corner with their dunce caps on. Douglas gets time because he’s more mature at 23 and his body is in the condition you would expect from a professional athlete.

Lee spent all summer working on his shot and other hings. His effort paid off, his performance is at an all star level not only scoring but intangibles also, he is proving to be the man Harrington wishes/thinks he is. He will get a good contract from someone. Maybe Hill should get the message unless his cranium is as thick as some of the other’s wearing dunce caps sitting on the knick bench.

  • Big Daddy

Oh and McGrady would do NOTHING for this team. He can’t play point and he’s not a center.

He needs the ball and has to learn D’ant’s way and if he cannot fit in then that’s just another problem sitting on the end of the bench with a dunce cap on.

The potential for having issues is too great to take the gamble with him even if it means getting rid of JJ…….wait….wait….what? Getting rid of JJ….ummmm…….OK…..wait, if they take Jefferies make the deal. Don’t even play McGrady, just tell him to stay home.

Can we get a draft pick too? Even a #2 so that we have something to sweeten a pot in another trade, nah that would be asking too much.

  • JLS125

    and they have battier too…

  • godsavetheknicks

Losing Jefferies will kill the Knicks. I can’t believe I just typed that but there was a game earlier in the season where the D just completely collapsed without him out there.

I give T-Mac a 50/50 shot between being useful and useless.

Is it worth potentially killing team chemistry and pretty much telling the rest of the guys that we’re throwing this season away to get the cap space?

Tough call if you’re DW…assuming Morey deigns to sniff at this deal.

Good post though. Things can only get better from here unless we settle for maxing out a Joe Johnson or some other cap crippling move.

  • BluEandOrange

Someone commented on a Knicks/Rockets/Bulls trade, and I think it could work. But instead of the one proposed, it should go down like this:

Knicks acquire Jerome James, Tyrus Thomas, Brad Miller,

    Bulls acquire T-Mac,

and Rockets acquire Jeffries, Robinson and Hughes.

Contractually, the Knicks get $23.1 MM, the Bulls $22.8, and the Rockets $24.1

But it does not end here.

The Knicks then flip D-Lee, Duhon, and Curry to the Wizards for Mike James, Randy Foye, and Caron Butler.

Flip Saunders has been overtly livid with the horrid play of the Wizards in the news lately and he has even stated he would be willing to make serious changes.

Moving Arenas to the 2, putting in Duhon at the 1, then moving Jamison to the 3 with Lee and Haywood making up the 4 and 5 would be just the move to make.

Then the Knicks would have a great starting lineup of Foye, Butler, Gallinari, Chandler/Thomas, and Brad Miller. Miller is the shooting big man David Lee is becoming, and at 7 ft, he provides a presence the Knicks desperately need.

The Knicks get to keep Harrington as the 6th man and Toney Douglas as the backup point with Mike James in an emergency role. Jon Bender would then be put in a larger role along with Jordan HIll. Essentially, Miller and Thomas would replace Lee and Jeffries as the primarily used front court combo.

This move would give more responsibility to Douglas, which is essential going forward, and gives the Knicks better scoring options.

How many times down the stretch have the Knicks needed that go to guy but instead collapsed? Caron Butler, who is very underrated as a scorer and defender in this league IMO, would get his chance to be the star that the Miami Heat and the 10th pick let get away. If a name like Caron makes it big in NY and becomes a star leading the Knicks to the playoffs, imagine how much more LeBron and company would love to come to the Mecca to gain as much attention?

It all works out with these deals. Tell me I’m wrong.

  • Augie

I just can’t take this stuff anymore. I’m so tired of “wait til next year”. The main goal of this season, any season, ought to be to win some freakin’ games! Give us a team worth watching. The Knicks have an excellent shot to grab the 6 seed (2.5 games out as of right now) in the playoffs if they continue to play as well as they have recently. A .500 record is very reachable. Laugh at that if you will, but after watching this team suck for so many years and not even get a sniff at the playoffs, it would be fantastic to see them play some meaningful games in the spring.

I think even just competing for a playoff spot, much less the 6 spot, would energize the Garden and the Knick fan base beyond belief and would do a hell of a lot more to attract some top flight free agents than a little more cap space will. Lebron is going to get his money from somebody, do you really think he is going to want to sign on with a perennial loser?

If they can get some playing time, in a positive atmosphere, for Douglas and Hill to develop, so much the better.

  • thefallen87

WRONG…worst thing i have heard on this site in a long time. I wouldn’t even be thinking about trading David lee; Never. Why, because the kid keeps improving every year. Right now he is in the same class as the david west and carlos boozer.

Number 2, do u really think caron butler is going to lead this team? are you serious…watch some basketball games…also adding him is reducing minutes for chandler and Gallinari , which should not happen for a player who got years left on his contract. The only sf i would add is T- Mac, one year rental that has a lot to prove. Not butler who couldn’t lead the wizards last year and is still on the books for a long time.

The core of this team is d. lee, chandler, and Gallinari and all we need is one more player and that’s it. Stop downgrading this squad, it has a lot of potential and their going to keep getting better. yes the knicks have had a decade to forget. Gallinari is on pace to be even better then Dirk N. some of you would trade chandler to get rid of cap space, i would not trade him for relief. If we sign lebron, then we trade him for another piece with curry.

I love this blog, however, some of u bloggers have no idea what u are talking about…no idea.

  • BluEandOrange

Wow you are just wrong on so many levels here I don’t know where to begin.

Number 1, D. Lee is a becoming a great home grown player no doubt, but unless you haven’t watched the Knicks since his inception, you know that his pick and roll defense is putrid and he cannot guard the paint. Thats why he is on a one year contract and was not signed long term, he is not going to be worth the $10+ MM he will be looking for, especially after this season.

In case you did not know, Lee is making $7 MM this year, and that is his hometown discount. If the Knicks are to sign him long term, expect around 4+ years and $45+ MM to be the starting point.

Is Donnie going to spend it on him, use it to lure in a bigger 2nd tier names; e.g. Joe Johnson, Scola, Ginobili, Boozer, and the way Brendan Haywood has been playing, is a better option to fill the paint that Lee.

Number 2, the reason that the Knicks are getting Butler and giving up Lee is to rid of Curry’s worthless contract as well. Instead of Curry’s two years 20+ MM remaining, the Knicks exchange it for Butler’s 2 years and $20 MM. Unless you’re stupid, you’d take the All-Star over the benchwarming bum.

The price to pay here is Lee, who won’t even be around after this season unless he finds the kindness in his heart to eat even less money than this year.

If you think a long term Lee signing and getting LeBron is Walsh’s high mark, then you must be thinking low. Everyone is talking about the Knicks clearing cap to sign at least two of the top tier FAs.

At least with Butler, LeBron has the great wingman that he has been looking for in a long time.

If you are going to make an argument, try and make it a exhaustive one.
