Knicks-Wizards Preview

By KATE HEDLIN
Posted Jan 30 2010 12:47AM
After playing poorly during their homestand, the New York Knicks may be looking forward to facing two of the NBA’s worst teams on the road, beginning Saturday night against the Washington Wizards.
Those feelings are likely tempered, however, as New York waits to see if two key players will be available.
The Knicks (17-26) have dropped seven of their last 10, and went 2-3 on their recent homestand, which included a 50-point loss to Dallas on Sunday and a 106-104 defeat to Toronto on Thursday.
The Knicks took a five-point lead late, but the Raptors went on an 8-0 run to make it 105-102 with 15.9 seconds left. David Lee finished with 29 points and 18 rebounds, and Al Harrington added 20 points.
The loss ruined another big night for Lee, who shot 61.9 percent. He’s averaging 23.1 points over the last eight games, and has scored 28 or more in three of the last four contests.
Lee may need another performance like that Saturday if the Knicks are without Jared Jeffries and Harrington, who are both questionable.
Jeffries, the Knicks’ top defensive player, missed the second half Thursday because of a hyperextended right knee. An MRI exam Friday confirmed a bone bruise. Harrington, who is second on the team in scoring with 17.9 points per game, said after the game his left knee has been hurting, but further testing revealed only soreness.
Coach Mike D’Antoni was optimistic Friday about both playing.
“Jared is day-to-day and today I expect him to play,” D’Antoni told the Knicks’ official Web site. “I might be a little over optimistic, but … I think he’ll play. And Al, I think (he will play). Today was a day of rest, but I think both of them will be OK.”

  • Knicks4life

Hopefully Hill gets some minutes tonight. Haywood is a good matchup for him.

If the Knicks lose tonight we do not deserve to be a playoff team.

Then again we did lose to a banged up Nets team that is 4-41 so anything is possible.

  • starksoakmase

can the knicks even lose one of the next 4?
    wiz,wolves,wiz,bucks….
The knicks have got to start stringing some w’s together regardless of the bumps and bruises.

    It starts tonight! LGK!

  • x-man

Yep, if we can’t beat the Bullets to-nite and the Wolves tomorrow, it’s time to please stop the nonsense about making the playoffs. It should be stopped no matter what anyway!

I would like to see this play with some effort and smarts! It’s time our coach make sure our players progress in the area. If we lose because we don’t have the talent or that super go-to guy, so be it! I surely don’t expect the impossible but the good fundamental b-ball is not out of the question.

  • Boots

figured that I’d take the hit for asking:

    Do we have JJ tonight?

Can the Knicks win without him?

Did you ever think this would be an issue?

Or that the Knicks chances “rest” upon JJ?

    Karma’s a b!tch. /

Hope Hill plays better than he did last game because I’d like to see more than a cameo sighting.

  • x-man

Let there be no mistake with Lee playing horrible defense. This dude does not even try to jump to defend in the paint! Yikes! Lee does not hustle on defense at all!

  • x-man

JJ is playing! He took a 3 too and hit it. A sign of bad things to come!

  • Mucha

I really don’t understand why Gallinari’s so lethargic on the road – he’s just chucking 3′s right now.

  • Mucha

Best jumpshooter in Knicks history : Jared Jeffries or Allan Houston? 5 points + 2 FT already.

Mike James! The jet is ready!

  • Boots

Golly, JJ made that jumper look so easy. And Duhon hit 2 of 3, and we’re losing. Now what?

  • Mucha

Blatche is killing him though lol

  • Knicks4life

    Pathetic 1st qtr.

  • boomshanka

bender in before hill – way to go d’antoni!

  • x-man

lmao! It’s amazing that with Gallo on this team, JJ seem to be featured on the offense end! What does this coach sees?

This coach does not know how to feature his threats on the floor. I would think a good coach would want to make sure his shooter get easy baskets or good lucks to get them going early.

Lee might as well just stay down on the offensive end of the floor!

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

    how bout these knicks

the greatest team an coach on the same team

    FORREAL
WHO PREPARES THIS TEAM FOR WAR

    CUPID?

  • x-man

The accountability for ya! 7 foot bender playing the perimeter! OMG OMG There goes that turrets again!

  • Boots

Another “best quarter of the year” . . . for the opposing team. gets tiresome.

Is Lee straining and aiming. His shot ,now that he isshooting from farther out than usual, seems like an effort rather than a flowing motion.

  • x-man

    lmao!

  • DatNewYorker

I had a DREAM that we never traded Trevor Ariza $5,854,000, Channing Frye$1,999,000, and Matt Barnes $1,600,000 and kept them on our roster. If we would of stayed patient like walsh did this summer our roster would look like this:

    PG DUHON/ROBINSON/DOUGLAS
    SG ARIZA/HUGHES/CHANDLER
    SF CHANDLER/GALLO/BARNES/LANDRY
    PF CHANNING FRYE/JEFFRIES/DAVID LEE/HILL/GALLO/BENDER
    C DAVID LEE/HILL/CURRY/MILICIC/BENDER

now, i can live with this roster! Looks like a playoff roster on the east. We would still be ready to add a superstar in 2010 also.

The people who want to tradeJordan Hill are NUTS because he will be giving another team some good minutes and help them be a winning team. Just like Ariza, Barnes, and Frye.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

i can’t even count the number of times other teams an players have set records on the knicks the past 6 years..

  • Knicks4life

No offense but I’m not sure what your point is. That is a terrible team.

  • Boots

I often wonder about Frye. Seems like as soon as he showed that he could shoot, the coach decided that he should play low and post. It was a strange thing to watch. Then they gave up on him.

Had the Knicks kept Frye and had he developed his shooting here, would the Knicks have drafted Gallo? Or, what would it be like to have him opposite Gallo on the arc.? His lack of defense probably wouldn’t get noticed here./

  • Boots

Isn’t that what guards are for?

  • DatNewYorker

It is a defensive team that can also score. Trevor, barnes, and chandler can play on both sides of the court. The only player who does that now is chandler and sometimes Gallo.

My point is GENIUS, is that if you add a allstar to this roster you can get out of the first round of the playoffs and you would have talented players with good contracts to trade JJ or even Curry with. Also the point is that you dont give up on a Jordan Hill because he is not ready yet. Players like him always come back to haunt the knicks.

    HELLO???

  • Boots

Hill does throw a good outlet pass. Could be valuable on a real fastbreak team.

He can’t shoot tonigh,t but they will fall eventually. Live body out there.

  • x-man

Thank God our coach finally put Hill in for Lee! The team started to play better defense without that hole in center. At least Hill is trying to contest shots and defend!

Also, Duhon is gonna kill Gallo progress in this league! Duhon seem like he tries to avoid getting the ball to Gallo! Will the coach please correct this!

  • x-man

Yep and Hill is not playing scared. With more PT, he can only get better I hope!

  • Boots

It is sad to see Gallo grab a rebound, bring the ball up quickly, look around , and wait for the guards to catch up.

And people say Gallo is slow?

  • totti

    a couple of notes
1 what a pleasure not to see Al. I’m sorry to say it because of the guy.
2 Hill’s playing well and this is very promising for the future.

  • starksoakmase

Hill looks good. Very versatile on offense.

I wonder about Frye. Remember, he is putting up good #’s with Nash. He wasnt doing this last year on Portland.

  • ds2488

At least we finally put in some effort to make it close at half. Just an absolutely pathetic effort first quarter. The fact that Bender came in before Hill is just insane, I don;t really get it and I still think Dantoni has done a mediocre job this season, but if he can not see that Hill>Bender than he needs to be fired. Just crazy.

  • totti

    another note

applause to dantoni for having put on the floor the most inconsistent five men on history:
duhon and robinson, which is a non sense itself, bender chandler and jeffries

  • totti

Dear Mike D’Antoni, the idol of my youthness, you are a very average of a coach. What a deception.

  • Boots

How many of you are listening to the Washington feed? They are talking about JJ’s shooting, and I’m yelling, “Take him back, trade for him now!”

  • Mucha

If the All-Star reserves were voted by the referees, David Lee wouldn’t even be an All-Star candidate!

  • totti

    f;;k the coach, f;;k duhon

  • Mucha

    ROTFL this game is awful.

Gallinari at the top of the key – no screen. When will somebody finally try to make things a little easier for him?

  • Mucha

Who’s supposed to guard Miller? The guy who’s one Red Bull away from being an All-Star or the Intangible machine?

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

    lmao..

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

an f**k this franchise until it gets a new owner

  • x-man

You see this too huh? lol The Bullets are featuring Miller like we should be doing with Gallo. However, you can see that this coach has never tried to make things easier for Gallo in practice for starters. Even when the team tries to set a pick for him on rare occasions, the ball is not there! It’s a timing thing so that the person using the pick to receive the ball in a timely manner for it to be effective.

Well we have Lee scoring now even though he gives it up on the other end. Miller will set records because we haven’t made any adjustment on him! But even the Wizards know to keep going to Miller until such adjustments are made.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

    how bout MILLER

  • Boots

Think they’re tired of his whining and complaining? Wrong way to get their attention.

  • ds2488

Just pathetic. I will add the obligatory nightly “Lee should be embarrassed”. He doesn’t box out, he doesn’t play defense in the post, and he walks out to the perimeter while a hot Mike Miller sets. Lets just not guard him..thats easier. Terrible, but Im kind of glad that this ridiculous notion of us making the playoffs will end tonight. Better for us to lose, and get Douglas and Hill playing significant minutes and Gallo being more invovled with the offense.

  • x-man

But he’ll get his double double and there will be those who see this stat and call him an all-star! To truth is that not only do the Senior Citizens needs that infamous Donut hole filled, so does our knicks!

  • totti

mucha ds24, your words are set on the stone!

  • Boots

It is the “system.” Shot goes to the open man, no matter who it is.

Strange how the open man is always the guy who can’t shoot.

  • totti

    xman, sorry, your words too!

  • HaS

“He doesn’t box out, he doesn’t play defense in the post”

But he puts up great numbers and deserves to be an All-Star! NOT.

  • Mucha

The point differencial on the defensive end between Lee and Horford makes the difference.

There’s something about David Lee. He plays hard against star players (like Bosh, Stoudemire or Howard) but he never plays D against the Haywoods, Mohammeds, Dalemberts etc. It’s crazy.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

i think miller hits 10 3′s an sets a new record for himself

the knicks is really a practice squad
an there leader is a clown..

  • ds2488

Wow, Knicks really are the definition of awful. I count 2 missed layups, both were awful by Hill rushing it and Nate somehow missing his easy one. On the missed layup though, why does Chandler not just feed him for an easy dunk there instead of taking a fadeaway jumper…Hill was unguarded there. Just can’t score and get the job done..terrible.

  • Knicks4life

Yeah like I said terrible team.

You have Lee and Frye as your starting frontcourt and you claim it is a defensive team?

Have you seen Duhon play defense this year?

  • Knicks4life

Lee just ran away from Earl Boykins driving down the lane.

  • ds2488

    Wow. Earl Boykins>Nate Robinson. Haha

  • totti

Hill plays well and guess what dantoni does? He takes hill out of the game and put duhon along with robinson again. Mike, congratulations!!!

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

if boykins was on the knicks he would be there best player

  • Boots

Just lost the feed on my laptop, maybe a blessing. Uh oh, its back.

  • Mucha

Thank God we have Jared Jeffries… now trade him lol.

My God, what a horrible performance by the Knicks. I can’t believe we’re only down by 9.

    No defense

    No ball movement

    No team concept

    No lay-ups

    Absolute 0.

  • Knicks4life

What is up with Gallo on the road?

    We need a PG desperately.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

game over knick will lose this

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

said it 2 early or it doesn’t matter they will still find a way to lose..lol

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

    ok it’s over

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

    an the fat lady sings

the knicks suck but whats the coach?

  • Knicks4life

We lost because we couldn’t stop anyone man to man. We had to play that zone for way too long and the Wiz figured it out.

  • DatNewYorker

would not mind seeing chandler and ariza defend though… and stop spoiling my dream. Make your own.

Duhon is a temp like most of the roster so i think a star would want to play with some talented players like gallo chandler ariza and frye with jordan hill and douglas off the bench. No Duhon in my dream for 2010. We would only need Camby, Lee and LBJ/ joe johnson to play well into the playoffs.

  • Knicks4life

We played Jarred Jeffries 48 minutes. Jared Jeffries.

  • ds2488

Yeah don’t really know what to say anymore. Same crap as always..Duhon is absolutely the worst player in the league right now, yet coach won’t sit him. Hill plays solidly, and gets rewarded by sitting on the bench for most of the game. Bender sucks, and the fact that Dantoni even tried to put him in is embarrassing. Gallo can not have any plays called for him, and only touches the ball out of desperation when Duhon or Nate has nothing else to do. Lee continues to make Zach Randolph look like Dikembe Mutumbo, and as always should be embarrassed with his defensive effort and inability to box out.

  • HaS

    And a coach.

  • x-man

Is some of ya think this coach has answers and is just waiting for the right players to come here so we can contend, you’re quite delusional!

Poor Gallo, one of the best pure shooters in this league and you might not ever see it they way this coach doesn’t feature or make it easier for him to get proper spacing and time.

It’s the coach folks, it really is the coach!

  • x-man

Yep, good thing he was hurt and was questionable to play today otherwise he might have played 45 minutes! lol

It’s the coach folks, it really is the coach!

  • ds2488

Jordan Hill +9 in 16 minutes of action. David Lee -17 in 39. Jonathon Bender -8 in 6 minutes of action. If Dantoni didn’t give those ridiculous minutes to Bender and sent a message to Lee that his defense and rebounding were unacceptable, and put Hill in for at least 10 more minutes taking away from those 2 I believe we would have won. Either way, its just getting absurd now.

  • Boots

Yup, and we were short one “light ‘em up shooter” off the bench. Gallo was off, Nate wasn’t explosive, Along with a center and a point guard, the Knicks need a true shooting guard. Chandler, as talented as he is, and Al, as smart as he isn’t, just don’t cut it at the two.

Seems like nobody is playing his true position . . . all bench jokes aside.

  • x-man

Yeah but Duhon is very good friends with his former Duke teammate and now Obama’s personal assistant Reggie Love. Maybe D’Antoni keeps playing Duhon because Love got something to do with it!

  • DatNewYorker

we are not a playoff team so let the trades begin!!! I want to see anybody go. I don’t care who it is. As long as Jeffries goes with them. Except Hill, he is still young. I can wait for him to develope.

  • BiggieSmalls

not really.. just dont guard the worst shooter.

  • HaS

I really hope the Knicks win the draft lottery next year.

  • x-man

Yep, December is gone folks! These are our real Knicks!

  • totti

    It’s the coach. 48 minutes to jeffries. 48 minutes……………..
    Absolutely incredible!
    It’s the coach.

  • HaS

Are you suggesting he take out his “All-Star”?

  • BiggieSmalls

    astonishing..

if it wasnt so sad it would be funny..

how the F does the coach put a player with a bad wheel out there for 48 minutes?

  • BiggieSmalls

just amazing.. cant wait for the TKB spin on this loss.

  • Boots

have you noticd the “look” Lee gives Gallo or Hill when one of them pulls down an uncontested bound? Like they took it from him.

I lika a lot about Lee and his game. Maybe it’s the stress of the past several weeks, but he is showing some immaturity attitude-wise out on the court.

  • Knicks4life

They brought it up in the pregame show, the brought it up during the game. Hopefully they bring it up during the post game. I mean we all really care that Duhon’s former teamate and best friend is Obama’s bodyguard therefore Duhon gets to play basketball with the president from time to time.

Great story. Perhaps Duhon should be working on his game with NBA talent and he wouldn’t absolutely suck.

  • HaS

That’s why he shouldn’t be playing 40+ mins EVERY night WITH Duhon.

  • x-man

Tommy Dee, I would like for you to even try to defend this coach now! If you do, I’m turning you in to the blog authorities! You must be stopped!

  • Knicks4life

You mean Isiah was unable to trade that pick too? He is probably still kicking himself about that.

  • x-man

I hear ya! DVJ is busy now getting his talking pts from Grandpa Donnie!

  • Knicks4life

Probably a puff piece about how valuable Jeffries is to the team and league.

  • Boots

With no pick, there is no incentive to lose, but if this is “trying to win,” February will be dismal.

  • Knicks4life

And we have a game tomorrow. Amazing.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

i guess the word is out about dvj

  • x-man

lol, Obama is on the phone with Reggie now trying to get Duhon to come to the white house because he wants a poster shot of him driving by slow Duhon!

  • BiggieSmalls

The herculean, corageous effort by our defensive glue guy who can’t hut a free throw

  • x-man

Yep, You were the one who exposed him from the start! lol

  • Boots

Imagine how bad it would have been had not an injured JJ been able to play 48 mibutes tonight. //

  • Knicks4life

What was your original point again? Was there one?

  • Boots

Is that like “can’t hit the side of a hut?”

  • Knicks4life

Hill would have played more minutes which would have been a very good thing. Plus, those missed free throws were killer.

  • Boots

Oh, you meant 2011. Isn’t that the pick that everybody here has traded with Chandler for Rubio? /

  • x-man

Oh Yeah Tommy, remember when you stated that JJ rarely take 3s. Well he took 4 of them today and only Gallo took more. JJ had 11 shot attempts with 17 pts. Again, the 2nd highest pt total on the team!

Any good coach seeing this in the stats would pass out from embarrassment!

It’s the coach Tommy! It’s really is the coach!

  • x-man

Yep but Harrington is hurt so he can play 48 mins tomorrow!

  • Boots

    Sarcasm, I meant, Biiggie.

  • BiggieSmalls

I got that boots… Just seems so ridiculously obvious.

    It’s the coach

  • Rene

Jeffries playing good in Wash, is the perfect showcase hope they bite.

  • bob go knicks

    what word is that?

  • bob go knicks

    ha ha ha ha ha
