Johnson to Chicago?; OKC Shopping Picks

“… Joe Johnson(notes) has the Atlanta Hawks contending now in the Eastern Conference, but several league sources say they wouldn’t be surprised if the All-Star guard leaves this summer, specifically to sign with the Chicago Bulls. The Hawks’ perch near the top of the East would likely keep them from moving Johnson – or any of their other core players – before next month’s trade deadline, but rival team executives wonder if they’d be wise to field offers – even if league sources claim they see no reason to entertain offers now.

At this point in my career, not too much is going to surprise me,” Johnson said. “Who knows what’s going to happen?“I’m one of those guys that always prepares for the worst, but always hope for the best.”

As Lang mentioned in our interview yesterday, he thinks Johnson may end up staying because he’s really enjoying being mentioned with the NBA free agent elite. They are winning and he’s enjoying the attention. And after so man bad years in Atlanta, Lang says, Johnson is really enjoying himself.

I know for a fact that Mike D’Antoni still LOVES Joe Johnson, so we will have to see. Interesting what Chicago is mentioned as a possible leader.

….The Oklahoma City Thunder are drawing trade interest for their two 2010 first-round draft picks: one is theirs; the other they picked up from Phoenix in the Kurt Thomas(notes) trade in 2007. The Thunder also own Minnesota’s second-round pick this season…”

Something worth keeping an eye on.

The Bulls will sign a max free agent. The fact that Derrick Rose is a 21-year old All-Star is really enticing.

I think Joe Johnson will leave the Hawks and sign with the Bulls or the Knicks unless Dwyane Wade and LeBron James sign with the Bulls and the Knicks respectively… But (call me crazy) I think Dwyane Wade might be a darkhorse if Pat Riley doesn’t trade for Chris Bosh or Amare Stoudemire before the trade deadline. He has nothing to prove (1 Finals MVP award) and the fact that the AmericanAirlines arena is always empty is digraceful… Who knows!

Man… this team desperately needs a legit All-Star and I’m definitely not talking about Amare… Donnie Walsh, please find a way to trade Jared Jeffries.

  • traps9

Are we talking Nate when it comes to OKC? That’d be interesting… I had Jared going there for Thomas; I hope his knee isn’t serious. If we can’t move him, okay; he can start the 4 next year, but it’d be nice to clear an extra $7M. Maybe Bron would like to play with JJ, though.

  • SilentJay

Johnson would be a great get, but we all know that in terms of “force of attraction”, the Bulls roster has more to offer than the Knicks present line up.
Personally, I don’t think Johnson is worth a max contract (which he will be looking for), and I don’t see him staying in Atlanta due to his ability to wander freely throughout the leage without any sense of loyalty.
As time has passed, my hopes that DW would shed JJ’s contract is really at its all time low (if nonexistent), and the chances of having a successful offseason seems less and less possible (though one must never lose faith in luck).
In that scenario, gathering picks should be a priority, since pulling young talent may be the Knicks best hope if the 2010 FAgency goes south, or if they’re only able to get a Rudy Gay type player.
Does this team have anything worthy of picks? That should be the question. Is Nate enough? Should he be packaged? If so, who? Is everyone expendable? Is anyone untouchable? If Walsh wants to pull something, clutch time’s approaching. He’s gonna have to get creative, and he may be prepared to face the possibility that maybe it’s time to blow this team up.

  • ds2488

Yes Mucha , well said. I can’t imagine that Wade likes performing in front of an empty arena every night, it is disgraceful. To make matters even worse, Riley and the Heat have done an absolutely miserable job surrounding Wade with talent since their championship. The Heat I think are only one game above 500. now, and their supporting cast down the line looks horrible besides for Beasley, who I actually know some Heat fans who insist he is a horrible fit with Wade because he needs the ball too much. Chalmers is also proving to not be a good fit, as he can’t hit wide open 3′s with any consistency. I’ll be shocked if Wade doesn’t leave, although I am worried about Chicago getting him, even if Rose and him are not a great fit in the backcourt tthere would be just too much talent there for it not to work out.

  • bklyn ton

We’re do for some good luck guys. We’ll get someone really good but how are gonna go about filling out the rest of the roster? Some idea’s please. I’ll stuck on that one.

  • bklyn ton

I mean i’m stuck on that one. I made a mistake on the last sentence fella’s.

  • rocky

I don’t think the knicks will move anyone.
    no-one wants anyone but Gallo-Chandler-Lee,
    and Donnie isn’t biting.

Jeffries now hurt and overpaid for the role he fils
will not be tradable. Noone is making offers for Nate that
    are worth the paperwork.

The Knicks you see are the Knicks we’ll be
    until the summer.

  • ds2488

The Knicks do have a lot of expiring contracts…they still might be players in the trade market this year. I’d say with the exception of Gallo and maybe one of either Chandler or Hill, everyone could be traded should the right offer present itself. If the Knicks have a chance to pull in a star player who could be second fiddle to Lebron/Wade, I think they will take the chance. Not sure if the salaries would work out though and don’t feel like looking it up now…would the other team have to take back Jeffries or Curry for the Knicks to still have enough to get a max free agent? I guess it depends on who they would trade for, but I still think theres a chance of some move happening.

  • starksoakmase

Overpaying for Joe Johnson and resigning David Lee for about 9 or 10 mil a year is probably the best the knicks can hope for this summer. Then they can get another big free agent in 2011 when JJ and Curry come off the books.

You guys have to remember that LBJ and Wade will resign because Cleveland and Miami can offer them the most money. Period! It is always about the money.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

yo HAS ima laugh that off son.

    think b4 u write/talk.

  • Jack D

so what, a few million more? lbj is so rich. plus, even if it DOES come down to the money, he’ll get more endorsement money in NY

  • totti

There’s no worth on trading chandler along with jj, maybe it can be worth to trade him with eddy. Unless donnie is sure 100% to land lbj, there’s no worth to trade lee neither. In case we sign lee at 10ml, we’ll have enough money left to improve the team. We can wait 2011 for a star.
    Basicly:

    good pg
    chandler
    gallo
    jeffries
    lee

If we add a star for jeffries, it can be a team competing for the ring.

  • starksoakmase

    Jack D,
I’ve heard that argument before. But I think the difference between what your own team can offer and what another team can offer in max money is at least 10mil. Have you ever heard of player turning down 10mil in any sport? Plus James just signed a big McDonalds contract. I think he is doing fine with endorsements.
believe me, I would love to have James. Renewing the great knick-lakers, knicks-celtics rivalries of the 60′s, 70′s. Basketball Nirvana, for us and the NBA. But I’m just trying to temper my expectations. Joe J., resign Lee and wait till 2011. is doable.

  • Knicks4life

Wade loves Miami and hates cold weather. Not sure where else he is going to go.

  • starksoakmase

and how about getting Camby with the MLE to play next to Lee.

    Serviceable PG
    Joe J.
    Chandler
    Lee
    Camby

    Bench: Danillo, Hill, TD

Than wait till 2011 for an acquisition to put us in title contention. CP3 anyone?

  • Knicks4life

Knicks should be open to trading everyone on this roster without exception.

If the opportunity presents itself to get Amare, Bosh, Melo, Paul, LBJ, Wade, Dirk, Joe Johnson, D. Williams, or any similar all-star players they need to jump on it and trade anyone on the current team to make it happen.

  • Knicks4life

We won’t have the mid-level next year. We will be under the cap going into free agency.

  • Knicks4life

Between the Mets inactivity and the Knicks mediocrity (actually they are below mediocre) this is going to be a long seven months until the free agency.

  • HaS

    Huh?

Listen bruh, I said u was my man.

    We good on my end.

Yes, I live in NYC. Born and raised all over. Coney, Brownsville, Southside, Cypress Hills, why does that matter?

I guess you didn’t understand what I said. Forget it man.

    Stay up.

    H

  • starksoakmase

OK. I wasn’t sure what the rules are about going over the cap when you are under it. Nevertheless. we still might have enough to get Camby depending on the cap. Also, I think Lee and Johnson might be willing to backload their contracts to give the Knicks more flexibility during 2010 and 2011.

Even if we don’t get Camby, we still have Jeffries in 2010 to start next to Lee. And what do you guys think about resigning Nate for say, 4years at 3 per backlaoded? He could be that serviceable PG with TD. and I think Joe can play the point a bit.
What do you guys think about that scenario?

  • Boots

Really, Bosh as well. If Bosh doesn’t go home to Texas, I can see him looking at Miami. Lousy surrounding cast or not.. If Wade stays, anyone who signs makes it a two superstar team. Miami is in a good position if they can hold on to Wade. Unlike the Knicks, they wouldn’t have to attract a second star.

Miami is warm during the winter, and it is a city where players and their spouses can have a good time. Very cosmopolitan, very multi-cultural, very multi-national like Toronto, but a hell of a lot warmer.

I think many people under-estimate Miami’s attraction as a world quality city.

  • Knicks4life

    Plus no state income tax.

  • Knicks4life

    You responded to that?

  • HaS

“What do you guys think about that scenario?”

    FAIL.

  • Knicks4life

Nate isn’t a PG. Unfortunately either is Tony.

If Jeffries is starting in 2010-2011 I won’t be watching many Knicks games.

And you can only backload contracts so much.

If Camby does sign for the veterans minimum I doubt it is to play for James Dolan again who ordered him traded during the Knicks heyday, and he would probably want to sign with a contender.

Besides I don’t see any scenario with which we are able to keep Lee and Jeffries.

  • TobyKnight

    Hmmmmm

    Lee/Jeffries/Hill
    Gallo/Hill
    Chandler/Gallo
    Johnson
    A real PG/Douglas

Who would the other players be?

  • starksoakmase

    Very constructive hASS. Brilliant really.

Fair enough Knicks4life. But I wouldn’t mind basically just signing Joe J. this offseason and keeping Lee and Nate (Nate for no more than 3 mil. per, if we can’t get a stopgap at the point). Then going for CP3 in 2011 when curry and JJ come off the books. I think that is a contending roster and one that would fit D’Antoni’s system.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

    lmao

    it is what it it..

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

it’s all good HAS just keep blogging..

the knicks will win the big 1 next year..

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

    rite now everything
    is a thought.
    nothing is imminent.

JoeJ would be a good pick up but i don’t think he’s a max money player..

    just gotta wait an see
no1 knows who will get traded until they are

some analyse do get good info but
u just gotta wait an see how it turns out

    simple as that…

who knows where LbJ will be for all we know he could just stay home.

but i kinda think wade is going home.

  • starksoakmase

    DaGawd,
You have to overpay for other teams’ talent. Its just how it goes.(Just ask the Yankees) Thats why i dont think the knicks can get Bron or Wade. the knicks can’t overpay for them because their respective teams can pay much more.

Give Joe J 15 per, give Lee 9-10 per, maybe get a role player with any cap space remaining(depending on the cap) and hope we can get a real PG in 2011. CP3 or D. Will from the Jazz..

Its realistic and will make the knicks real contenders.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

    yea no doubt

it’s been a league where u gotta over pay just like baseball.

    thats not bad at all
but donnie has to comeout with som1 real good this summer
    atleast..

  • DatNewYorker

Wade will need a big man to play with he does not fit well in chicago. Wade dominates the ball and only can use a pg that can hit shots from the peremiter. So Chris Bosh will be going to Miami. Bosh loves that warm weather. It’s easy to play with a small media and empty seats. I truley believe that even superstars are scared to play in NYC.

  • DatNewYorker

We will get a PG from a team who would like an expiring contract. Walsh can get that.

  • HaS

Ahhhh, that’s very clever man with many names and none of them yours (starksoakmase) “hASS” I get it. Thanks for the love man. B)

    EAD.

  • DatNewYorker

i agree with every player except Amare.

  • DatNewYorker

Camby loves NY and I’m sure he will come if the Knicks call but DAntoni is stupid enough to start JJ over camby. Camby may even be benched like Hughes if he came here. I Don’t trust this coach.

  • starksoakmase

    wow pretty harsh DatNYer.
I hope your right. about the knicks getting Camby. He is exactly what this teams needs going forward. Him and Joe J. next year and CP3 or Dwill. Thats a squad that will really test the coaches worth. If he can’t win with that, then he isn’t worth the $$.

  • BluEandOrange

I can’t believe all I have to look forward to is Jarrod Washburn. Being a Mets and Knicks fan is the absolutely crappiest deal right now. Hopefully the Mets pull off a miracle in October because I definitely won’t see LeBron in Orange and Blue then.

  • Rene

Relax Lebron is a lock.If we buyout Curry and Jeffries if we can’t trade them we save 4 million so I think we have enough for Lebron,Lee and Johnson.I think Lebron has the class to take a cut for the first year to come here and get a a couple of guys.
N8,Lee,I’ll Will,Lebron,Joe J.,Gallo,Hill,Trade the rest for picks or buy Ok. picks and draft Alabi a shotblocker by trading up with two picks.Trying like hell all along to get Rubio here by working the back door the family ,Rubio can force the trade.

What does CLASS have to do with taking a pay cut?If he had class he would stay home in cleveland. your post gets dumbest of the day

  • Mucha

LeBron will get a max contract, he will not “take a cut”. And we don’t even have enough money for Lee + LeBron so LeBron + Lee + Johnson = Pipe dream. We’d have to get rid of both Curry and Jeffries to sign them lol. Forget about it.
