Knicks-Timberwolves Preview
By MATT BECKER

Following a humiliating loss last weekend, the New York Knicks responded by thoroughly dominating the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The Knicks again try to take out their frustrations on the hapless Timberwolves on Sunday night at the Target Center.

After a 106-104 loss to Toronto on Thursday, New York (18-28) was hoping to bounce back Saturday at Southeast Division-worst Washington. Instead, the Knicks were outplayed, falling behind by as many as 18 points en route to a 106-96 defeat.

The loss was tough to swallow, but wasn’t New York’s most embarrassing defeat of the week.

Last Sunday, the Knicks suffered the most lopsided home loss in franchise history, falling 128-78 to Dallas. They didn’t stay down for long, bouncing back Tuesday with a convincing 132-105 win over the Timberwolves (10-38) at Madison Square Garden.

New York, which led by as many as 36, matched a season high in points and made a season-best 17 3-pointers. David Lee led the way by shooting 12 of 17 and finishing with 28 points and 10 rebounds, while Al Harrington added 26 points and 10 boards.

Lee, who found out this week he didn’t make the All-Star team, had 24 points Saturday against the Wizards, but fell one rebound shy of recording his eighth straight double-double.

Harrington, New York’s second-leading scorer with an average of 17.9 points, sat out Saturday with a sore right knee and is also expected to miss this game.

We’ve talked plenty about the team’s inability to bounce back after tough losses. But at the end of the day, they better reach deep down inside and figure something out in the Twin Cities.

  • starksoakmase

Let the youth movement begin today.
That means no Bender and lots of Hill.
Thats means less a lot less Duhon and more TD.
And with Harrington out, how about some Landry. He shows hustle when he has gotten a shot.

  • x-man

Hey Tommy, I know you’re not reading my post anymore since I stated this coach puts out b.s. similar to Isiah! But could you give or sing these words to your dad Donnie when you see him later?

“Do you know where you’re going to?
Do you like the things that life is showing you
    Where are you going to?
    Do you know…? ”

Under full disclosure they aren’t mines, they’re Diana’s believe?

Hopefully, that will get dad to see this coach realistically since he did have Isiah working for him too!

Take care buddy! I see JJ having about 5 3pt attempts tonite!

  • x-man

lol. I’m not sure the coach can be responsible for effort! Are you suggesting this coach give the younger and hungrier playings more PT at the expense of others? You hear that Tommy?

Should starksoakmase be taken to the backroom and have DVJ show him that moving watch on a chain? Just asking!

  • Kwayry

    Tommy,
Have you heard anything on the trade front?
    http://www.sacbee.com/sports/story/2502629.html
“League sources polled this week said Philadelphia and New York are the most active.
The Knicks are looking to shed even more salary-cap room for this coming summer as they prepare to make a run at James. Small forward Jared Jeffries is among those said to be available. “

  • bob go knicks

Yes,song lyrics have such an effect “.I’d be more than just a nuthin,my head all full of stuffin,my heart all full of pain…………………..

  • starksoakmase

    Not sure what thats about.
before last night i was all for going for the playoffs. it’s not gonna happen. The end of the knicks schedule is brutal. last 20 games or so.
Lets see what we got. in Hill, TD and Landry. Maybe they can get some confidence and cohesion going. Who knows.
But yes, some hunger would certainly help at this point.

  • x-man

lol. It was just a little sarcasm aimed at Tommy! Many of us knew that playoffs were out of the question from the start of the year. Playoffs should have been icing at best if the younger players produced quicker than thought. This was a rebuild year and at least many of us were lead to believe this when new mgmt came in.

In all seriousness, coaches have PT to use to get effort out of players. If that doesn’t work then it means the players have completely tuned out the coach or feel the coach has no idea about what to do and they intend to force mgmt hand to change the coach!

So the coach has not used his PT card to send the message to the players yet. That is why I put this on the coach! Maybe this coach is afraid that maybe the players have tuned him out and don’t want to go that route.

  • pear1jamten

This site is getting ridiculous all you guys do at TKB is copy and paste.. copy and paste… the preview tonight.. written from someone from NBA.com come on you have what ,4 writers and you cant write a preview for a game? Oh yea im sorry you comment in about 2 sentences after you post someone else’s article… It’s pretty pathetic and it’s not a blog..all your doing is reporting someone else’s news.. wanna see a blog? Go to posting and toasting they don’t have as many articles but its because they actually WRITE their own articles. The only reason why i’m saying this is I like when every 2 or 3 days you actually write an original article.. but its not enough and it doesn’t constitute a worthwhile blog if you can’t write more .. especially when you have a GROUP of writers attributed to the blog…

  • Boots

Thoughts and questions going into the game:

The Knicks should be reminded of the statement re: they have nothing to offer trade-wise. It might keep them from assuming tonight will be like the last game. They should play pissed-off. It might help with intensity as it seemingly did for Chandler last game against the Wolves.

Still think the coach has a responsibility to get them focused, if you don’t like the word motivated, coming out for the third quarter. It doesn’t take yelling and screaming to motivate . . . er, focus a team. How many times have we seen opponents come out third quarter like a team on a mission? Our announcers comment on what their coach must have said during half-timeto achieve that result. When do we get to hear that said about the Knicks?

Why did Ver . . I mean Berman take a gratuitous shot at Gallo’s defense today? It is not like he is the worst big defender out there.

I must have missed it. From posts last night and today, was it confirmed that DVJ is a company troll or something?

  • HaS
  • x-man

DVJ prefers “family values” instead of company troll!

  • BiggieSmalls

    Duhon is awful

    bender should be home watching

    has JJ sat yet?

They look tired .. Missing shots

    no adjustments by the coach

  • Boots

Tired in the first half. Lots of reaching = lots of whistles.

  • Mucha

This game is the definition of mediocrity.

Nobody’s playing well. Well Jeffries is.

  • Boots

So, do they come out with vigor and grit for the third quarter, or do they come out and let the Wolves go on a 15-2 run to start the quarter?

Wouldn’t it be great if Clyde has to wonder what Coach said to them during halftime to turn them around?

Maybe we’ll get to hear the talk about the “come from behind effort that just fell a little short.

  • Boots

Yup, two bad teams. Hard to watch.

  • BiggieSmalls

Jeffries 3-6 from 3pt hasn’t sat down yet

reports are he got a cortisone shot Friday

Real good.. Why don’t they start putting speed in his Gatorade.

Please let his knee hold up until feb 18th

  • x-man

Yikes! I turn away to watch Pink perform at the Grammys and we are now down by 9 pts! Well, we should be able to beat this awful team in the 4th qtr.

If you haven’t caught it yet, check out Pink’s performance at the Grammy’s! Quite unique and memorable!

  • x-man

lol, I had him down for 5 3pt attempts and he has 6 already! Silly me!

Just think, Tommy Dee told me recently that JJ doesn’t shoot the 3 rarely! lol I better stop teasing Tommy before he goes Al Bundy on me.

  • Boots

We’d better hope so, most times a second shot doesn’t work.

  • BiggieSmalls

Clyde keeps talking about tired legs… So I guess all these minutes and the shirt rotation have an effect after all… SIlly me.

Down 16.. The coach woke up to call a time out

  • x-man

Clyde just exposed what everyone should know about how to guard Gallo! You would think our coach would have figured this out and put in measures to help Gallo get free and etc.

“Push up on Gallo and make him put it on the floor” Duuuuh

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

    lmao

the knicks are filming the sequel to u got served
    they got served.

    lmao

    poor knicks
trade every1 i would do that
an get a better coach an owner

it’s starts with the owner so once there is a new owner the knicks will be much better..

  • JASONHAYES

This team has officially given up, so I am giving up on them. I need to see a much upgraded roster for the 2010-11 season. Gallo is regressing!

  • x-man

lmao! More like the South Park version! We need Butters!

  • Peso

An offense running through Lee-hon and Jeffries is not cutting it coach! I am a lost for words right now…

Coach has a lot of guys with knee braces on limping, Lee, Jeffries, Harrington….They need to sit and let the kids play!

Mike D is a good coach but you can’t turn copper into gold, let alone bronze with his latest rotation…

  • x-man

Well you can’t blame the coach! The coach doesn’t play ya know! Same ol Knicks! But you can’t compare them to Isiah’s Knicks! No f##king way! lol

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

    lmao..

  • Mucha

Gallinari is definitely regressing. His shot selection is mediocre and his ability to make plays has disapparead.

  • Boots

Had to put the Grammies on the TV for a distraction. What does Tabu do for the Black Eyed Peas? I’ve never seen him do anything but clap and alittle dancing. Can the guy sing?

  • bartnyk

WOW am i seeing this score right now??

  • HaS

“the hapless Timberwolves” aren’t so “hapless” after all. If they are what does that make the Knicks losing to them by 20?

But hey, _avi_ got his _ouble _ouble again.

  • x-man

There’s a guy in the black eyes peas?

  • bartnyk

    lol your consistent

  • Mucha

First blow-out loss of the season.

    Wait…

  • BiggieSmalls

Watch the write up That the coach used 10 guys tonite and lost by 20

  • Boots

Have to wonder if he’s getting turned off. Never gets the ball when he’s open, never gets it on the move, never gets plays run for him, not even the ocasional P and R.

Gets knocked by Berman today for his defense. At what point does he stop caring as much? He probably would rather be in Toronto playing Euro-ball.

  • Mucha

    ESPN Trademachine party!!!!

  • JASONHAYES

You know whats funny! Isiah’s crew had more talent than this crew. Im almost sure that if D’antoni stayed with Isiah’s old crew of:

    Marbury
    Crawford
    Chandler
    Z-Bo
    Lee

This team would be number 4 or 5 in the east. D’antoni’s offense fit that crew better. Man oh man am I starting to miss Marbury! SMH

  • JASONHAYES

    Trade em all, even Gallo!

  • x-man

Yep but it’s just another way to say 1 and out! Maybe somebody can whisper in this coach’s ear that Gallo plays for us and needs help!

  • TrentMotherTucker

I love Chris Duhon the way a whale loves a harpoon.

  • EQ1217

    The writeup will mention:

    a) The coach is not responsible for motivating players
    b) Duhon is BACK!!!! name a PG who can shoot 4 of 5 and +1
    c) You need superstars to beat 10 win teams
    d) all of the above

  • x-man

Gallo is much better than what we are seeing now. The dude has no help from this coach and his team mates and it’s a total shame. Gallo is not Durant! He can’t take guys off the dribble consistently when they push up on him.

With a good coach or good team, Gallo would be an assassin from the perimeter. When he learns how to take guys off the dribble to get a shorter range short or take it to the rim, he will be unstoppable.

  • x-man

“C” is priceless dude, just priceless! lmao

  • BluEandOrange

Guys, we as Knicks fans can actually say that we have experienced the worst run in Knicks franchise history.

Since it is a formality the Knicks are going to finish under .500 this season, this year will mark the 9th straight year that the Knicks finished without an even or winning record.

The Knicks previously had 8 straight losing seasons from 1959-1960 to 1966-1967.

Just wrap your mind around that concept. During first 8 straight losing seasons, there only existed the eight original founding NBA teams. The NBA was still a relatively new league at the time.

And now, the Knicks have been the most lucrative franchise in the NBA the past few seasons until the Lakers took the #1 spot this season. And yet, while the Lakers had 4 titles last decade, the Knicks haven’t won one since 1973.

Its a complete embarrassment. I am embarrassed to be a Knicks fan. But I will continue to don that orange and blue because I pray that God will have pity on my team.

Please, LeBron. Come to NY. Please.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

traded players that fit well to get under the cap to sign the same players with different names
unless it’s wade or lebron i’m wrong

  • EQ1217

After you say all that, why would LeBron want to come here?

  • JASONHAYES

Gallo is starting to show me that he is european-soft. All you have to do is be physical with him and he is very ineffective.

  • Boots

At least Chandler had a good game in front of the Wolves’ brass. After being named in how many trades, particularly to Minn., and then Kahn’s remark, Chandler has shown up for both games. Maybe more names should have been mentioned in trades to Minn.

  • The_Guy
  • Mucha

    I agree.

    He looks frustrated.

But he should be more active regardless.

  • starksoakmase

knicks have no perimeter defense, no interior defense.

    tonight was pathetic.

Donnie is gonna have to pull a rabbit out of his a$$ this summer.

  • HaS

“After you say all that, why would LeBron want to come here?”

    Thank you EQ1217, thank you.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

what kinda rabbit u got in mind?

  • x-man

That has some truth but there have been many great players in this league that needed help to get their shot off. Reggie Miller was run off so many picks and he had a quick release.

This game is about adjustments. Anyone studying this game can tell that Gallo can shoot but he’s not the same player when you force him to put it on the floor. He can learn to get better at this for sure but for now, he needs help.

If the coach/players gave him help, Gallo’s confidence would soar and he would have confidence in his teammates as well.

Also, Gallo is very unselfish but that can be cured. Watch the games and you will see Gallo gets less attention from his teammates on the offensive end than JJ. This is where the coach has to pull over his players and read them the riot act!

  • ds2488

If last night wasn’t the death knell for the season, tonight certainly was. Tonight I didn’t have such a problem with Gallo: His shot wasn’t falling yet again and he simply doesn’t have the ball in his hands enough to make plays. He tried going to the basket, and got a few tip ins. And is again rebounding well, he’s just in a cold slump shooting the ball, but I still like what I’m seeing from him. Just needs the ball in his hands.

I really wanted to point out how god awful Nate was, and I drew that conclusion before I saw that he was 1-10 and a shocking -33 in 25 minutes wit only 1 assist and 2 turnovers. I’ve fluctuated a lot back and forth as to whether he actually helps this team or not, and tonight was just awful in every respect. No defense, he took more ridiculous 3′s than Duhon usually takes, pulling up from everywhere without looking to pass. Just a really miserable performance by him, people including me have been forgetful that his exile resulted in the best ball of the season and with him now taking a bigger role and more minutes the team is again stuck in a horrible slump as it was when he was playing a lot in the beginning of the year. Not sure what to really think anymore withh him.

  • Boots

Somewhat “Euro-soft”, but he’s young. It is a different game in Europe and he has to adjust.

Let him finish growing and filling out. He hasn’t really been able to build muscle yet, but now that his back seems healed, he’ll be able to build strength. In many respects he is still a rookie on the court, given his lack of PT last year.

He was rebounding tonight and made it to the free-throw line. He doesn’t get the calls yet that he should, so he does get roughed up.

Patience, Bargnani was considered “Euro-soft” his first couple of years. I don’t think that is the case any longer.

  • EQ1217

If we crash and burn in 2010 free agency, who is coaching this team in 2011?

Because I cannot for the life of me see D’antoni going through another season like these last two

  • The_Guy

I don’t buy these conspiracy theories/excuses for Gallo. Why is it that Gallo can have a bad night, but Nate is just awful, and one of the reasons the team lost? I think teams have adjusted to his game, just like they did with Brandon Jennings. Guys are guarding him close, and are daring him to beat them off the dribble.

He doesn’t really have the speed or athleticism to do that, so that’s why he’s struggling. Especially vs. athletic 3s like Caron Butler, CRD, Luol Deng, etc.

I think the Knicks should sell while his stock is relatively high.

  • JASONHAYES

Yea we can forget Lebron or Wade. Lebron has all the endorements he needs to acheive his billion dollar goal, just signed with McDonalds. Thats huge! Wade is too busy being a pretty boy and loving being a god down in miami. Its time to face reality and make some realistic deals. If I had to guess this is what the 2010 roster will look like.

    Felton
    Mike Miller
    Gay or Mcgrady
    Tyrus Thomas
Lee (more than likely Knicks will resign him)

    Bench:
    Chandler
    Gallo
    Hill
    Lance Stephensen
    Alston
    Douglas

Not a pretty sight, but thats what I think it will look like!

  • Boots

either his hammy still hampers him or playing “under control” has taken the spirit and energy from his game.

  • JASONHAYES

Sad to say that New Jersey will have the last laugh!
New Jersey’s roster might look something like this:

    Wall
    Lee
    Lebron
    Amare
    Lopez

Who knows who they get for trading Devin Harris. I dont even wanna think about that

  • HaS

I say tank next year and hope the lottery balls bounce in the Knicks’ favor.

  • Boots

And maybe they should try treating him like a member of the team, and run some plays for him before “giving up on him.

Adjusting to a player’s game is not only a compnent of defense, but also a component of offense.

Nate’s hammy may still troubling him. I don’t think he “lost” the game. That was a team effort. /

  • EQ1217

    I don’ think Gallo is a 3 anyway, he’s a future 4 once he’s added some strength.

If anything Gallo has shown more promise for the future because he’s been able to produce even without speed, athleticism and strength. With hard work he can develop into a better athlete and player.

  • HaS

“Don’t read this if you get depressed easy.”

In reference to that article, Big and I have been mentioning the possibility of that scenario for months.

I think we can all put to bed that this team is a “better supporting cast” than the LeBron’s supporting cast on the Cavs. If not you guys are delusional.

  • EQ1217

The way Flynn’s been playing, no we they are trading rubio just yet. We have a better shot at Flynn.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

some how i think ewing will be in play..

  • JASONHAYES

Who’s coming out in 11? This would have been the draft to have your lottery pick. I see atleast three franchise changing players

    Wall
    Turner
    Cousins

  • Boots

    Lotta truth there.

  • Boots

I’d be good with that. He’s paid his dues as an assistant. Always been a fan of his.

  • ds2488

Yeah if theres one or 2 guys who don’t deserve to get bashed on this team, its Gallo and Chandler. Listen, its important to note that Gallo is not really a true sophomore yet, and is coming off of back surgery this offseason. On a team with no pg and no plays called for him, Gallo has still managed to lead the league in 3pts made. Not only that, but he has still managed to improve his game in every concievable aspect from last year… Especially rebounding, some highlight reel dunks, solid man defense, great help defense in blocks and steals. Really he has improved dramatically. i definitely don’ tthink he deserves criticism for his shot selection, as he remains so frustratingly marginalized in this offense that I believe he should shoot it every time he touches the ball.

  • BluEandOrange

Its time for Donnie to go all out and trade away Curry and Jeffries at all costs and improve the team assuming that LeBron, Wade, Stoudemire, Joe Johnson, or any other top tier free agent will not come to NY. That is the way it should have been done the whole time.

Move 1: Trade Jeffries and Landry to the Spurs for Finley and Bonner

Move 2: Trade Curry, Chandler, Hill, and Robinson to the Kings for Kenny Thomas, Hawes, Armstrong, and Udoka.

Move 3: Trade Lee, Bender, Douglas, and the Knicks 2010 2nd Round Pick to the Blazers for Outlaw, Howard, and Bayless.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

not bad at all a total make over

  • http://theknicksblog.com DW2010

Not while he’s still one of the 12 most eligible bachelors in NY. That ought to count for something. The chicks are all over him.

Of course, that might be why he’s looking tired and regressing (on the court at least).

Our young stallion obviously is no longer untouchable!

  • http://theknicksblog.com DW2010

“I believe he should shoot it every time he touches the ball.”

Sorry, that job’s already filled. See Harrington, Al.

  • Mucha

LMAO you appear only when Gallinari doesn’t play well.

You never talk about the Knicks, only the fact that you hate Gallinari lol. What a joke.

  • http://theknicksblog.com DW2010

Wouldn’t hard work pay off more for a player who has speed, athleticism and strength to begin with?

Gallo is a good shooter when open. He also has good court vision for a youngin’. If a good deal comes along, grab a sure thing and pull the trigger (no reference to Arenas intended) on athe deal.

  • http://theknicksblog.com DW2010

I don’t hate Gallo. I just think that too much slack is given him because of his age. He’s good but I don’t see all star written all over him. I accept youthful mistakes, but he needs to move more unless his back is actually hurting. If so, we need to listen to offers asap.

Hope one day I do see an all star (unless traded, of course).

  • http://theknicksblog.com DW2010

    B & O,

The job is yours. Donny agrees to step aside and take a looooooong caribbean vacation. Now make it happen!

I’m in your corner buddy. Changing my moniker too

    sincerely,

    Blue&Orange2010

  • http://theknicksblog.com DW2010

I didn’t see the game so I don’t know how Gallo played. I only appear when I am sober (at least partially).

Upon request, I will torture myself for you however, Mucha.

Then I will have to make a more educated rant — kind of takes the fun out of it.

  • http://theknicksblog.com DW2010

correction: I only appear here when I am sober

  • BluEandOrange

Just trying to help Walsh see the truth. Lee’s snubbing this year and the disastrous loss to the Mavericks have reaffirmed the mediocrity that is the Knicks to the entire country.

9 straight losing seasons will not bring LeBron to NY unless the Knicks commit themselves to only around $10 MM for next season since only cash and the prospect of playing with an All-Star teammate will bring a plyer to the Garden. With the cap hovering around $52-54 MM, the Knicks would need at least $32.6 to sign LeBron and Bosh to their minimums ($15.9 MM for LeBron and $16.7 for Bosh). That $7.4 MM would probably be spent on role players while the Mid-Level Exception and Bi-Annual exception (unless the Knicks used the Bi-Annual Exception to sign a FA prior to this season, since you can only use the Bi-Annual Ex. every two years) to sign veteran talent that are willing to take paycuts in order to play along side LeBron and Bosh/Stoudemire/Johnson/etc,

In order for any of this to happen the Knicks are going to have to dump Curry and Jeffries. And in order to dump Curry and Jeffries, Chandler and Gallo and Douglas and Hill are probably going to have to be traded.

With my scenario, at least the Knicks get to keep Gallo and they do not give up future 1st Rd Picks. The Spurs dump non-rotation players in Bonner and Finley and upgrade defensively with Jeffries and have a prospect in Landry. The Knicks get their swingman in Chandler and their sixth man to fire up Arco Arena in Nate and they only really lose Hawes as Thomas and Armstrong were not being given minutes anyway. The Trailblazers acquire the 4/5 they have been looking for ever since Oden and Pryzbilla went down in Lee and they also get a defensive minded guard in Douglas. With Miller cementing himself with his 52 pt game (still doubt anyone will taker Miller’s salary so he could be there to stay), Jerryd Bayless would be stuck behind him. This way, Bayless becomes the starting PG the Knick desperately need.

Going down the stretch with Bayless, Udoka, Outlaw, Gallinari, and Hawes is not at all bad. And the Knicks would have less than $9 MM committed to Bayless, Hawes, and Gallo for next season.

I’d be happy to see a lineup of 1) Bayless, 2) LeBron, 3) Gallo, 4) Bosh, and 5) Hawes for next season. And yes, that is LeBron playing the SG position.

That is a monster starting 5.

  • BluEandOrange

The $7.4 MM I’m speaking of is if the Knicks had $40 MM in cap room next season. If the Knicks spent the minimum to get LeBrona and Bosh which is $32.6 MM, the Knicks would have $7.4 left.

I also meant to say that “the Kings get their swingman in Chandler…”

  • bob go knicks

they may have 4 writers, but 3 of them are under 17 yrs of age.i dont know how you can take that seriously

  • bob go knicks

looks like JJ is being “showcased”

  • http://theknicksblog.com DW2010

Nobody wants to take on Curry’s contract no matter what they get back for it. Lee can veto any trades. Would LeBron be more enticed to come to NYC with Bayless, Hawes and Gallo, with no guarantees of anything else of value? Is that better than Gallo, Chandler and Hill (and possibly Lee)? If all he wanted was a few championships, why not play alongside Durant, Westbrook, Green, Harden, etc. in OKC? There are many more reasons why it won’t work (imho) but that should suffice and my interest is waning. My offer still stands though. If you can convince the other teams that your plan works for them, I will show you eternal gratitude (unless you don’t put together a better team next year).

I think you’re approach is all wrong. Don’t you think it would stroke LBJ’s ego quite a bit if he could walk into the MECCA and turn a moribund franchise with 9 straight losing seasons around in his first year? Bring a championship or 3 to the Big Apple this decade. THE MAN WOULD BE GOD! He would have an entourage that stretched across the Hudson and out to the Hampton’s. He could even get reservations at any restaurant in NY, or a ticket to a Broadway show, with a snap of his fingers. KOBE CAN”T DO THAT!

Besides, Kobe had all those stars surrounding him when he won his championships. LBJ could bring his own players (who would take less money to come play with the king). If he won a championship here, a sea of people would part whenever he walked down any street, even during rush hour. How cool is that?

Sell that to LeBron and he will come (a basket of dreams)! How could he resist.

You see, it’s not really about cap space or roster or… It’s about selling LBJ the dream. That’s a whole lot easier than trying to figure out a way to pawn off Curry on some dumbed down GM. Now isn’t it?
