What Is Ray Ray’s Worth?

by Chris Alvino on February 2nd, 2010 at 10:51 pm

There have been rumblings regarding Ray Allen‘s availability, and despite some denials from Danny Ainge, where there is smoke, there is a good chance there is fire.

Ray Allen, the former UConn star, appears to be on the downside of his career, a career that has been nothing short of stellar.  Although he is still having a productive season, he is not the same threat that he once was back in his prime.

That said, Allen is a true professional and a strong veteran presence.  He, along with Kevin Garnett, formed an unbreakable core with Paul Pierce and helped bring perhaps the league’s most prestigious franchise out of the gutter and back into the upper echelon of the NBA.  No one will forget that about Allen.

However, good things cannot last forever.  Allen’s shooting has struggled recently and his defense has fallen off a bit.  With injuries plaguing Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett, there is a good chance of the Celtics dangling one of their stars, who by the way possesses a very attractive, large expiring contract, with the hope of bringing in reinforcements.

I am not sure if the Knicks are necessarily a fit for Allen (I do think that the Celtics would have interest in Jared Jeffries and Nate Robinson, though), but it is possible.  Even with his declining skills, I feel that Allen’s mere presence would provide a positive boost for this team.

I happen to think that Allen can have major value around the league because his expiring deal and the Celtics’ win now attitude and ability to absorb a contract.

So, what is Ray Allen worth in your eyes?  Would you inquire on the former all-star?

Definitely could be a way to get JJ outta here. Jeffries, Nate, and Al for Allen and Scalabrine?

  • DVJ

Of course I would inquire about him and I also think your right about the Celtics willing to absorb Jeffries contract because of their win now attitude. What else would we give them? I don’t think that would be enough to make the deal work. My guess is send Harrington, his 10 mill plus contract would make the deal work.

  • asumets

Absolutely. Makes sense for both teams.

Jeffries gets the C’s THAT much tougher defensively. JJ doesn’t need to shoot a single shot, since they have enough guys that can shoot the ball (and don’t mind taking the chance). Not everyone on the team can be a star averaging 20 pts a night.

Nate would give them a scorer off the bench that can carry you on a night when your stars are off or need a rest. He is a guy that hustles and can be reeled in by their veteran leadership. Plus, Nate wants to win and most likely wouldn’t veto.

Ray Allen gives the Knicks a consistent veteran player that could potentially provide the leadership the Knicks o-so desperately need to make a playoff dash (we can only hope).

If this is on the table…….should be a done deal.

  • asumets

Oh yeah and……and the ability to sign two max players

  • BiggieSmalls

if they dont want Jeffries then move on..

  • su5melo

If Jefferies can be dumped in the deal, then I’m all for it.

Honestly if we could somehow give Jefferies away for nothing I’d be all for it. The ability to sign a FA to a max deal to entice LeBron is incredibly important.

BTW Scalabrine is a lil bit scary with that red hair…would anyone wanna watch that daily?

  • J_Starks3

The most important point is that if Ray is here next year LBJ would love to play with him. He would just stand behind the 3 point line letting the kind do his thing. Also Ray would really entertain the idea of being The Kings robin for a year or two. I know this means we must resign him but hey I would.

  • su5melo

resinging Allen would mean passing up on FA such as bosh or lee….what is the need of Allen when the knicks already have Gallinari? they seem to play very similar roles.

  • barnaby8787

I said this god knows how many times already chris, but jj, nate, and al for ray makes perfect sense

  • barnaby8787

Random though. Supposedly, jason thompson may be on the block from sac-town. The rumor is him to the bobcats barring the bobcats get a center back. Well since d-lee is better than all of the cats centers, messing with the trade machine a bit but…
    http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=ykrgvjv

Kind of similar to the nate and jj for k thomas trade last year, but instead we throw in lee and they throw in three young expirings in armstrong, brockman, and the most important piece, thompson.

  • http://theknicksblog.com DW2010

Boston has no use for an expiring contract unless they’re in rebuikding mode and selling more assets. Allen’s contract subtraction + JJ’s addition would put them just below the cap for 2010, with 4 more spots to fill. So essentially you’re proposing Allen for JJ, a disgruntled Al (who wouldn’t see burn on that team) and nothing else.

If you had Allen and a chance to go deep into the playoffs, would you make that deal? If we had as many options as boston does, would you want to see Al get time, after seeing him kill momentum all year?

  • http://theknicksblog.com DW2010

    Chris,

Not to be ruin your lead-in, but I think a more appropriate adage in sports reporting is Where there’s smoke there’s probably a reporter, a cigar, a lack of original ideas and a deadline.

Allen is no longer a star, but still more than a serviceable player

  • steiker9

this trade is not happening in a million years, no one is trading a hall of famer in Ray Allen for Jared F****G Jeffries, get real guys. These trade rumors are becoming more ridiculous every day.

  • http://theknicksblog.com DW2010

Jeffries would play C over who, Perkins or Rasheed? C + PF = Perkins, Rasheed and Garnett. With Big Baby in the wings.

JJ could see some time at sf for pierce or sg, now that their still very talented guard is playing for their friends at the garden (NY).

Boston wants to add JJ or Nate without hurting their playoff chances. They would expect to get a solid starter for Allen, or it’s no deal. Is Nate the answer?

I know why the Knicks would want this deal.

  • http://theknicksblog.com DW2010

    MOVING ON!

  • http://theknicksblog.com DW2010

If he kicks Al and Duhon in the shins and ankles in practice hard enough, bring him on.

  • http://theknicksblog.com DW2010

How does this help Boston? You know, our trading partner.

  • http://theknicksblog.com DW2010

Perfection certainly has taken a hit over the years.

  • http://theknicksblog.com DW2010

Hello friend. Welcome to never never land.

For Boston to do a JJ for Allen deal, Donnie would have to throw in Gallo, Hill, Chandler, Nate (cause they like him) and D’Antoni’s personal Italian chef. Maybe Hill’s overdoing it.

Now that’s a fair trade. Neither side gets what they really need.

  • dogmanx23

If Allen gets moves they are going to want a all-star in return. Although i do think Jeffries would fit Boston perfectly its not going to be for Allen.

maybe Scalabrine/Allen for Jeffries/Landry. If you include Nate they have to add House to that deal.

  • harris

How about throwing D’Antoni into the deal for Allen? As an assistant to Doc, Mke D’ (and his annoying brother) could teach Boston the various nuances of “the system”.

We’ll make Hughes the new coach since he has had plenty of time to watch the team recently. Darko and Curry can be his assistants.

  • paulempson

Seriously, if Boston is about getting the best bang for their buck thi sseason with the ability to renegotaite in th esummer with the same players

    JJ
    N8
    Harrington

They will more than get back Ray’s scoring and get a whole lot deeper and better defensively. Nate will be a huge spark off the bench ,. Both he and Harrington are threats from down downtown

JJ can guard every position and that has to be very appealing to a team like Boston.

I read above that there is KG,Sheed, Perkins, Big baby …so where does he fit ? Guarding opposing 1,2,&3′s ..

I think its a good trade for both

  • paulempson

and still a major threat to win it all…..

If the rest can stay healthy

  • Mucha

David Lee, Nate Robinson and Eddy Curry’s a nice package for them. And there’s a way to make the numbers match.

I love Ray Allen. One of my favorite players.

  • blackwood

I would do that in a heartbeat I have always liked Thompson he is foul pron but A good talent blocking shots and rebounding and is a decent scorer as well. As I have said many times I am a big fan of Kevin Martin he would be a great robin with say an LBJ batman lol Gallo and Kmart would open the floor something crazy with there 3 point shooting!! But hey just the Thompson move would be a really good one!

  • bmathews77

Ray Allen may not be what he once was in his prime but he can still shoot but it is his large expiring contract which is very valuable to NBA teams.
I really doubt that he will be traded to the Knicks because I think the Celtics are looking for someone to come in to replace Ray Allen at the SG position so that they can win now. That being said, if I were the Celtic’s I’d be looking into these moves:

Boston – Ray Allen (SG) 1 year for Philadelphia -Andre Igodala (SG) 5 years and Jason Kapono (SF) 1 year

(That move helps Philadelphia move Igodala’s large contract like they been trying to do for cap space. It also helps Boston get a younger shooting guard and another shooter in Kapono.

Boston – Ray Allen (SG) 1 year for Detroit – Richard Hamilton (SG) 4 yrs, Kwame Brown (C) 1 yr and Chucky Atkins (PG) 1 yr

(This move helps Detroit move RIP Hamiltons contract for cap space and the other two are just filler for the numbers to work however I think they’d keep Atkins as a backup and of course waive Kwame Brown.

    Hey bmathews,

What the hell are you doing on this site? Neither of those trades can help the knicks. What would Boston need with Iggy when they can have Al + Nate + JJ (perfect for both, no)? Your trade only makes sense for Boston and Philly, not the Knicks. lol

Iggy is probably the type of player that Boston was looking for when they put Allen on the market — a younger scoring option who can play defense at the same time.

Only drawback for Philly is that they are dangling Iggy hoping to rid their payroll of either Dalembert or Brand. It’s perfect for Boston. It does get Philly $20M off the books, so they might jump at it as the deadline comes closer without takers for either of those 2.

Hamilton is not a bad thought either. But Hamilton is breaking down physically lately too. At 31 he is still 3 years younger than Allen and can score. Less defense than Allen. Still another legitimate option for Boston.

Both are in the realm of possibility. Not welcomed here but a GOOD JOB! I think Boston will get a trade more in the order of those 2 trades, if not one of them.

  • http://theknicksblog.com DW2010

Gallo, Chandler and EC would make a mediocre package for Boston. While the first two will certainly help, Eddy is a killer.

If they do Lee, Nate and Curry for Allen, Boston would have no starting sg for this year or next and a 11.5M pile of garbage on the bench. Lee is a bad fit because Boston’s strength is PF and C — Perkins, Garnett, R.Wallace. Perkins plays good defense, as do the others, for a defensive minded team. They don’t lack for rebounds.

Nate would be a good back-up for Allen, but Allen will be playing in NY. Doesn’t help Boston.

Boston couldn’t resign Allen in 2010 because Eddy puts them well over the cap.

Eddy would serve as ballast for a sinking ship, without any stabilization.

  • http://theknicksblog.com DW2010

Rondo and House do a better job at defensing the 1 and have value on offense.

JJ, Nate and T. Allen could all provide good back up at the 2. None should be a starting sg, especially for a team with championship aspirations. They have no starter there though because they just trade a good (not great) one to NYin exchange for their 2 back up sgs.

Al and JJ could play behind Pierce at sf, but Boston plays defense and Al plays none. Rondo wouldn’t pass him the ball any way. They already have enough offense. JJ would help back up pierce, so he would fit at the 3 well. He would be welcome if only they didn’t have to vacancy at the starting 2, a more important need.

Now JJ, Chandler, Nate and filler could spark the Celtic’s interest. Add Hughes and Scalabrine to the mix (to match salaries) and you might see Boston pull the trigger. Hughes could sit in Marbury’s old seat on the bench.

Chandler is a fine replacement for Allen, young and could shift to the 3 when needed.

Would the Knicks do that deal?

  • bmathews77

hehe…I know I know, it doesn’t help the Knicks. But I just couldn’t see a trade with the Knicks for some reason.

I do think the Knicks will make a trade to move Jeffries, just not with the Celtics.

  • http://theknicksblog.com DW2010

“They will more than get back Ray’s scoring and get a whole lot deeper and better defensively.”

Did you mean that Nate and Al would make them a “whole lot deeper and better defensively”, or that JJ would more than replace Ray’s scoring. If they could get a variance from the league office to have 6 men on the court so that Nate can play only offense and JJ, only defense, the trade might just make sense.

Ray plays both offense and defense.

  • http://theknicksblog.com DW2010

    Not really.

  • http://theknicksblog.com DW2010

..or a lesser one with them. Not for R. Allen though. You have his value pegged just about right.
