Richard Joseph “Dick” McGuire
The Knicks organization and its fans lost a huge member of its great history with
the passing of Dick McGuire today at the age of 84.
I never saw McGuire play, but from what I’ve gathered from the countless of experienced fans who did, McGuire was one of the Knicks’ first true superstars.
He was a New Yorker through and through, having attended St. John’s after a stellar high school career at LaSalle Academy, a school I know very well having played in the CHSAA as well. LaSalle Academy was where, most recently, Ron Artest, Ed Elisma (Georgia Tech), Steve McDowell (Manhattan) and Shammgod Wells played.
McGuire ran the Knicks draft in 1987 and made the decision to select a similar hard-core and true New Yorker, Mark Jackson, who won Rookie of the Year that year.
“I consider myself a student of the game, a historian,” Jackson told the NY Post. “The McGuire name in New York City is royalty when you talk about basketball.”
For those fans who don’t know about one of the two #15′s that hang in the rafters when you walk into MSG for a game, ask someone who knows about him. And how he carried himself as a Knick.
If you have any stories or memories about McGuire, I’d love to hear about them. Leave them in the comments section below, or email them to theknicksblog@gmail.com.
