Brown wants Augustin Out, Jeffries is the Perfect Fit

by Tommy Dee on February 4th, 2010 at 6:44 pm

Via Yahoo-

“…League executives say between now and then Brown is determined to move point guard D.J. Augustin(notes) for a veteran big man. Michael Jordan and Rod Higgins wanted to draft Brook Lopez(notes) with the ninth pick in 2008, but Brown demanded they pass on the center for Augustin. Bobcats management had gone so far to tell Lopez’s agents they were picking him…”

Now we’ve mentioned Jared Jeffries time and time again, and to me, there is no better fit for him, realistically, than Charlotte. Why? Because they’d be adding a hybrid defender comfortable with their system to do the dirty work and not worry about scoring.

Sounds familiar, no?

The Bobcats can include Augustin, their Raja Bell trade exception and another piece (Acie Law) to make it work. It’s complicated, but there’s little reason to think a deal can’t get done one way or another if a third team can get involved. Lakers? The Bobcats would have to address their point guard situation should they move both Augustin and Law, but Raymond Felton is their bread and butter. Their need is obviously an upgrade over Nazr Mohammed.

The Bobcats have zero interest in the summer of 2010. They need to win now. Adding Jeffries, I believe, to a team that has Ty Chandler and Gerald Wallace defensively, could really allow them to make a push and really put a scare into a top 4 team in the first round.

Now, the Knicks will have to make moves on their end in order to bring back more players than they give up, but again, if they move Jeffries they can make a real play for Tracy McGrady as they attempt the goal of making the playoffs.

Again, it says here, that Jeffries will most certainly fit what the Bobcats want to do, and that’s continue to defend and play up tempo all game. Mohammed hampers them. Jeffries would help them guard the perimeter and also play the 4-5 on an uptempo second unit and be much more productive in his 17 minutes than Nazr.

If your Donnie Walsh, do you concede Jeffries to a team that would most certainly improve thus lessening your own playoff hopes? Is Jordan Hill ready to move into the rotation and be a contributor? Good questions, but in the end Walsh has to gauge the Bobcats’ level of interest, if any and there should be. If I’m Larry Brown, it’s time to make a splash by adding a playoff-tested, team defender in Jeffries at the expense of a guard not in your future plans. Again, they have scorers.  Adding Jeffries makes them a more complete team and one that can push a team up the standings in the East and position themselves to making playoff basketball relevant in Charlotte again, like we’ve seen before.

Complete no brainer.

Obviously, Brown’s relationship with the Knicks isn’t great, but he respects Walsh and at the end of the day Carolina blood thirsts for wins, not grudges.

Let’s see.

Finger point to our boy Tommy G for the heads up on the link.

  • Hustle

Who are they gonna package with Augustin to make the trade work?

  • J_Starks3

My feelings if this trade goes down. Obviously trading Jeffries is priority #1 and that would be a plus. Augustin is a player that does not impress me but ANYTHING over Duhon is an upgrade plus we’ve all agree that if LBJ comes true point guard play is not necessarily needed.

  • dogmanx23

Its a nice trade idea but would the bobcats really give up their 2 backup PGs?

    Jeffries/Landry for Augustin/Law/Graham works.

Our D will suffer but Jeffries contract is key to keeping D.Lee and going after lebron.

  • Hustle

Ack, missed that one paragraph when it jumped after clicking the link. If it works out, I’m all for it.

  • paulempson

Jeffries can be a serviceable asset to ANY playoff team. Boston, Charlotte , Cavs , Lakers , Dallas…..

I’m sure all the teams with no shot at FA’s this summer cap wise will be interested.

Bobcats tarde would have to be something along the lines of

    Jeffries

    For

    DJ Augustin
    Ronald Murray
    3 mill Cash or pick

Nothing else really matches as they have a boatload of long term deals. This gives Charlotte an expiring next year and the rest of why is mentioned above

I say , by the deadline , Donnie’s patience might really pay off . Look how many teams are mounting up in the injury dept.

    Nate
    Lee
    Jeffries
    Hughes
    Harrington
    Mobley

Those names are the most likely .

    Darko, Duhon ……meh

Plus we have trade exceptions but I think Donnie will hold on to those and use later. Do we know when they expire btw?

  • Assistant DA

Earlier reports of this potential deal mentioned Gerald Henderson would be included. I assume this deal is dead if we are hearing about it from either team.

  • jasoneg77

Would trading jeffries for augustine save us enough money for max and lee?

Sure we’re getting rid of jeffries, but we’re taking on 2.5 million in salary for next yr, w/ a team option after that. I like the trade, but it’s still not wiping off Jeffries contract. Curious????

  • trenttucker

“Its a nice trade idea but would the bobcats really give up their 2 backup PGs?”

… especially when their only other PG will be a free agent in the summer?

  • totti

tommy, no disrespect, but your attempts to explain to others teams how jj will be useful to them are just pathetic as kahn’s hope to convince rubio that minneapolis is as nice as barcelona.

  • dogmanx23

We have close to $25M. Jeffries is $7M more. If we take back Augustin it still clears 4.5M. Right now We have Enough for Lebron and Lee at $9M. If you trade Jeffries thats $4M more to use on Lee, maybe give him $10-$11M and money for another free agent.

Jeffries is a LB type of player he plays defense. LB has a history of not liking young guys so it probably won’t take much to get Augustin. Also remember Jordan drafted Jeffries when he was in washington.

What sucks is Bobcats don’t have big expiring contracts.

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

    pathetic?

    have you watched the bobcats?

he makes them better off the bat.

this isn’t a knicks sale, this is thinking about the bobcats too. they can make a real push by sitting mohammed and playing Jeffries.

    end of story.

  • totti

more, augustine, who certainly is better than duhon(who is not?), cannot be the long term pg solution this team needs because he’s simply not strong enough.

  • Hydr0

    ok…let me get this straight…

Larry Brown demanded that Charolette pick Augustine ahead of Brooke Lopez. Now, according to this story, he is trying to convince them to trade the guy he made them pick over Lopez for a guy with almost a $7 million salary who you can’t even count on to make a lay up. Is Larry Brown trying to get fired again?

It’s more likely that this story is a bunch of bs…i wish it was true, but I think that there is no chance this happens

  • Cheech

I dont know if u can say Augustin cant be a longterm solution. Hes still young, and he has a smooth jumper, great range, and hes great and getting in the lane.

But is JJ really enough for augustin? I mean, i understand CHA wants to get rid of DJ, but would they give up thier first round pick of a year ago for JJ?

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

agreed, but a player with upside and a good contract. aka an asset.

  • totti

You should go door by door to sell insurance plan. I’m sure you’ll earn plenty of money. Bobcats are already one of the best defender team of the league, so maybe they need something different from jj.
Of course, i’ll be very happy with this trade as any knick fan will be.

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

they don’t NEED him to score…that’s the point. he gives them more balance in other areas.

  • Assistant DA

Yes. According to Larry Coon at NYTimes, the Knicks have around $24M to spend on free agents this summer. Jefferies salary is $6.8M and would increase the teams CAP space to around $29M in a trade with Charlotte that includes Augustin’ salary of $2.5M but not Henderson.

The max a team can pay a max free agent in the first year is around $16M. The Knicks would have approximately $12M left after signing one max free agent. If league wide ticket sales continue at their current pace and BRI (basketball related income) holds at $55M or $56M, the Knicks may have an additional $2M-3M in CAP space. The Knicks could also increase their CAP space with a buy out of Eddy Curry’s contract. According to the NYTimes, it might save the team $2-3M for CAP space.

  • totti

Tommy, sorry for the word “pathetic”, ill chosen.

  • BiggieSmalls

from my understanding .. trade exceptions cant be combined with other assets in one for one trades..

you cant go JJ for player A plus trade exception to make up the difference… Only trade exception for player A or Player A plus player B for PLayer C plus trade exception .. this scenario would technically be structured as player A for player c and player b for trade exception/

The all knowing Larry Coon just did an article on trade exception ion hoops world.. maybe 3 weeks ago..
    http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=14923
    in it he says:
Trade exceptions can’t be added to anything. ……. The trade exception can only be used to acquire a player or players making the amount of the exception or less (plus a $100,000 fudge factor).

So the knicks could do JJ plus a player A for Augustin plus player B plus trade exception (structured as two trades Player A for trade exceptiona nd JJ for Augustin plus player B.

    does that make sense?

  • totti

As for jj, i agree that he’s overpaid, but i think that he will fit well with lbj and i’ll prefer to have him instead of lee at 10ml (are we sure that 10ml will be enough for him next season?)

  • Assistant DA

I have to agree with Mr. Small’s on this one, Tommy. It would have to be structured as two seperate deals in order to use the trade exception.

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

Right, which is why i was thinking landry…and i dont even think that works. i didn’t really commit to the ultimate specifics because of that…should clarify.

    thx.

  • manners

When is the trading deadline again??!!!! next weekend??!!!!…… before now and then there will be numerous trade rumors and situations that make sense. This proposal makes seems to work for both teams but wake me up the day before the deadline!!!!!!

  • Qaspec

I don’t see Charlotte trading away both of their young back-up point guards for Jeffries. I see the Cats being more interested a straight swap of Hill and Augustin. When the counter-offer was Jeffries, Charlotte probably declined. Since it’s dead, that’s why we are hearing it as a rumor,

  • Hydr0

I know what you’re saying and if JJ made $3-4 million less it might be an easier sale for Larry to make to Bobcats management. But giving away the young guy that you convinced them to take over Lopez (a potential superstar) for a $7 million player that can only help you on defense..that seems like a tough sale to me. Maybe Larry Brown can make it happen (I hope so). After all, he convinced us to trade for Steve Francis while we still had Marbury on the team.

Bobcats are a small market team…I’m not sure if they are going to throw money around like that. Walsh said it himself, some guys are great for one price, but horrible at another price. That’s JJ…sad but true.

  • HaS

Jared Jeffries isn’t much of a consolation prize for missing out on Brooke Lopez. I mean really?

That has to get someone fired I would imagine.

  • BiggieSmalls

nah.. Landry doesnt make enough to split the trade.

technically.. Augustin, Ajinca, grahan and Murray for JJ, TD ans Landry works..

only saves 3 mil in 2010 and you need a roster spot..

Ajinca is the french 7 foot shot blocking string bean dude who was a first rounder in 2008 .. hasnt done much but play in teh D league

  • BiggieSmalls

    18th

  • Assistant DA

I doubt the Charlotte had any interest in JHill. Larry Brown does not play rookies and this team has a mandate to win now. Michael Jordan drafted Jefferies when his Airness was the GM for the Wizards.

  • BiggieSmalls

if JJ is making 3.5 mil less you keep him.

  • HaS

*watches LeBron vs. Wade on TNT*

    *cries inside*

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

    No problem

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

I know, you wanted to watch the lakers….

    LOL.

    no shots.

  • HaS

    LOL whatever Mr. Dee.

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

    Ok..my bad…no more faker jokes….

    promise.

    all friends here.

  • dino2008

agreed. im pretty sure jackson and wallace can handle the scoring…. jeffries is a great fit in char.

  • Hydr0

yep exactly, good at one price and horrible at another. I still think JJ will be a tough piece to trade, even after reading so many articles that claim teams should “want” him at $7 million. If DW moves him without giving up our young core, he may have earned his salary this year. If Walsh gets the right guys this summer, then he earns his contract. If he trades Curry next year for a another good piece to our team…well that’s just gravy. DW still has a chance to do a really good job for us. **fingers crossed**

  • paulempson

Tommy ….YOu got it down pat in terms of Jeffrie’s abilities and most just look at stats. He is not a stat guy . His tangibles are that he can play /more to the point , guard every position and teams around he league (and beat writers ) are finally taking notice.

As are GM’s . He is a great expiring for any team next year also.

Larry Brown is totally a guy who gets sick of rookies /sophmores .

they be better of making a trade to get back maybe Duhon and Jeffries . I think Duhon would be a LB kind of PG as back up

Not sure how thats poss though $ wise

As for Lee , Lee’s deal should be back end heavy to allow for more cap space in 2010 and 2011

Id be shocked if JJ isn’t moved. Curry is a goner . He will be bought out this summer

  • Rene

I think the problem is matching salaries,we need a third team but I agree with Tommy Dee with Jeffries they can do damage they are allready a really good defensive team with JJ they can scare teams.Or at least they could think they can with JJ.I like the kid Augustine.

  • Tomhimself

nazr has a per of 21 this year and is + when is on the court. you are making it sound like jeffries is some massive improvement when really nazr is a extremely good big man

  • manners

    Thanks for the info Big!

  • trenttucker

I would rather trade JJ for an expiring so we can have more cap space. I don’t want Augustin’s contract next year — he’s a backup PG.

    My plan:

Trade JJ and Lee for an expiring, then wait for Summer 2010 to
    Sign Lebron $16m
    Sign Felton $7m
    Sign Haywood $7m
Trade Eddy Curry’s expiring (has some value once season ends) and Chandler for Andre Iguodala
Pick up a few backups with the $2-3 million we have left over

    Felton
    Iguodala
    Lebron
    Gallo
    Haywood

Athletic team, very strong on both ends, can play inside or outside.

  • totti

Finally someone not wanting lee for next year, very good trent!

  • http://knickstorrents.com knickstorrents

DJ Augustin is a scrub… I’d actually rather keep Jeffries than to trade for a small point guard who can’t shoot.

Trent – very nice lineup. Felton is a stud and Haywood would be great if we can get him for 7mm. I doubt he comes that cheap though.

  • starksoakmase

    Thank you!

A lot of people have been saying the knicks cannot afford Lee and LBJ next year unless they trade Jeffries. They want to trade Chandler just to dump Jeffries.or its just anti-Walsh BS. Walsh has to make a deal that makes sense. No need to panic just because we are pretty much out of the playoffs.

  • dino2008

why do you want igudola. he is way overpaid imo.

  • starksoakmase

Why in gods name would you trade Chandler for Iguodala?
He is waaay over paid. What is the problem with just keeping Lee trying for LBJ. If we can get rid of JJ before his deal is up…Great. If not, wait for 17 mil off the books in 2011 and add a couple of very good players to:

James Lee Chandler Gallo Hill TD and 2011 first rounder

  • starksoakmase

if anything, you trade Chandler for a very good C or PG, and thats if you get James

  • x-man

Ain’t that a bitch, you told that Vermont Teddy bear that you were more than friends!

  • bob go knicks

    lol

  • trenttucker

I actually like Iguodala. Strong offense and defense, plays great in playoffs/4th quarters. Yes, he’s overpaid, but once we go over the cap it doesn’t matter. I also think he’s much better as a second fiddle than as a top guy.

  • trenttucker

    A boy can dream…

  • trenttucker

I am done with Lee. Forza Roma.
