Berman: Duhon In, Nate Out, As Starter

by Chris Alvino on February 8th, 2010 at 7:47 am

According to Marc Berman, Nate Robinson‘s time in the starting lineup will be short lived as Mike D’Antoni plans to re-insert Chris Duhon as the starting point.

Despite “winning” back his job, it is clear that Duhon is not the answer to the Knicks woes at the point.  With the deadline looming, Donnie Walsh will work the phones for a second option at the very least.

As for Nate, most people on this site agree that he is at his best as a scorer off the pine.  He was not overly effective setting up the offense against Cleveland.  Actually, on multiple occasions, Nate killed possessions by dribbling for too long and running out the shot clock.  He is not the answer to the Knicks’ PG woes either.

Acie Law remains on the market, and while I would not mind giving him a shot, I have not been overly impressed with him since the Hawks drafted him a couple of years ago.  Perhaps he just needs a fair chance to prove himself, but who knows.

GREAT!!! What a nice way to start the morning…

  • joetheknick

No surpises in Berman’s article. Duhon is the best PG on the team. Priority is to trade Jeffries. If we get a rookie PG to look at in a trade that would be great. It would be nice to give Acie Law a chance. DW should and will stick with his plan and yes maybe some PG help will happen.

  • BiggieSmalls

    no surpirses??

im shocked that the coach would call Duhon the equivalent of an assistant coach. How many assistants do we need to get the job done?

    and to this comment
D’Antoni said he now firmly views Robinson is better suited as a shooting guard off the bench.

all i have to say is it’s about time!!

How long into this half hour sit down did they come to the conclusion that Duhon is the major problem on this team

  • joetheknick

I am surprises you ar surprised. Over the years I have heard many a coach refer to his PG as the “floor general” “ass’t coach on the floor” etc.. I believe D’Antoni has constantly characterized Robinson as the best SG off the bench. Duhon has repeated said he is struggling which is quite obvious to all of us. Does D’Antoni have any real choices in this matter?

  • EQ1217

It looks like D’antoni has lost complete control of this team and if LeBron or any other superstar player doesn’t come to NY this off season, I can’t see how he would want to continue coaching in NY.

Maybe I’ve missed it, but no one seems to bring up the fact that who are President and/or GM is going to be after Donnie retires in 1 to 2 years. If Donnie doesn’t strike gold in 2010, I can’t see him sticking around to rebuild through the draft, etc.

The scariest part about this article is that I truly expect Duhon to be back next year and possibly as our starting PG

  • BiggieSmalls

    that is simply frightening..

I think Donnie is trying to bring in Chris Mullen as his successor in waiting..

I am sure that Allan Houston has some designs on the job..

Maybe Willis Reed too if/when he gets fired from NoLa..

    all three equally frightening.

we can only hope the Russian fires Rod Thorn and he comes across the river.

  • J_Starks3

I am so frustrated with this coach I don’t even know what to write.

I know that Nate is not a true PG but that was a quick hook!!! We played the Cavs!!!!

I can’t wait till this deadline passes so we can either aquire another pg and burry Duhon on the bench or give the rook some playing time.

  • J_Starks3

Yes he does and he wears No. 23 and was a first round pick which we paid 3 mil to get.

  • EQ1217

What is scarier would be if Isiah return to MSG and considering Dolan loves Isiah it cannot be simply dismissed.

  • J_Starks3

This was meant to be under joetheknick comment on options at the pg.

  • Eduardo15

Hey… at least we are not the Clippers who are considering Isiah as their next head coach/GM.

See? Things could be worse… *mad man laughter

  • joetheknick

I suspect that D’Antoni does not believe Toney Douglas is ready for major minutes. It would be nice if they put him out there and he surprised us all. I am sure it will happen as Duhon will not get many more chances to come out of his funk. I am betting on seeing more of TD.

  • Eduardo15

On the other hand, they do have some young talent in Griffin, E. Gordon, Kaman… sigh…

  • boomshanka

If Duhon is the best PG on the team, then DW should be auditioning D-leaguers on 10 day contracts until they can work out a trade.

  • x-man

YIKES! Who Dat says this coach knows what he’s doing?

What does Duhon needs to do to sit on the bench? He has surely earned that right flat out! Douglas gotta be thinking to himself, “I can’t f##k up that much like him so how am I’m gonna get PT?”

This coach is on a mission to get fired because even a dummy show know better than this. D’Antoni wants out before he’s exposed here as a total fraud!

  • x-man

Even Isiah wouldn’t keep starting or playing Duhon! This coach sucks period!

  • DWknickfan

Let me start off by saying I am not a big fan of Nate. With that being said, I don’t understand how coach can remove him from the starting lineup after two games. Duhon has struggled over a year in the role and now he is called an assistant coach. In all honesty, he might be a better assistant coach than PG. I think coach is doing the Knick franchise a diservice by continuing to start Duhon when Nate or TD is on the team.

  • oscar f

Reguardless of if nate or duhon starts they both will play the bulk of time at the 1 and one of them depending on who is having a better game will be closing the game in the final minutes which is scary and bad for the knicks . Ace Law is a very big gamble but his contract expires so it doesn’t matter but Augustin would be a more reliable pg going ahead into next season . Those of you who think that TD can run this system that revolves around pg play know nothing about basketball and probably never played the game. That dude is not a pg . He is a worst option than Nate because he doesn’t score as good and worst than Duhon because he doesnt pass as good. Dont know why they payed 3 mil to get him . He aint worth that .

  • oscar f

Actually duhon is not a dumb pg he just cant do what he would like to do because he is limited . LImited court vision, handles, creativity, shooting, and confidence. Any pg with the slightly above average skill afore mentioned would flourish in the knicks system. Lets see what Donnie comes up with .

  • http://www.thiswebsiteissoawesome.com/ The Frankman

    *facepalm.gif*

Thank you, D’Antoni. You just made my submission to Tommy Dee look even better… if I ever mail it in.

  • x-man

Yeah, we call those folks fans not players! If Duhon the do the job on the floor because he’s limited, he should be on the bench one way or the other or he should be blogging like us!

You don’t get elevated to the starting pt guard because you’re a virtual player. That’s for the Wii!

  • trenttucker

I support D’Antoni here. He tried to see if Nate could play PG for a couple of games, and it didn’t work. And it wasn’t the surface stats, but the fact that when Nate is on the floor, Gallo and Chandler don’t get involved. Duhon, sadly, is better as a PG. Hughes has not been playing well, either. He’s back to taking terrible shots (although his D has been alright, even if he gambles a little too much for my liking.)

Right now, Duhon gives this team a better chance to win than Douglas, whose defense I love, but who has shown absolutely no ability to run an offense. Duhon is still also kind of being showcased as a trade piece — he wouldn’t be a terrible backup PG for another team. However, once the trading deadline passes, I would guess we are going to see a lot less Duhon, Hughes and Harrington, and a lot more Hill, Douglas, and Landry.

  • bob go knicks

    douglass is NOT a PG

  • x-man

Win what dude. this team isn’t going anywhere and Duhon palying more is not gonna do squat for us. Let the kid Douglas play to see what he can do.

To keep running a Duhon who the coach says flatly has lost his confidence is counter productive to the grand scheme of things. A confident Duhon still sucks.

That particular Superbowl commercial could have used “Duhon” instead of Betty White and it would stil have been quite funny and true!

  • bob go knicks

not for nuthin, but what exactly is the coach supposed to do with this group of losers?

  • bob go knicks

Clippers arent thinking anything of the kind.Again its the ignorant sportswriters who come up with this stuff

  • x-man

    Duhon isn’t a NBA player!

  • bob go knicks

last time i looked ,he was,and he was starting for the knicks!

  • J_Starks3

We are not talking about the group of “loosers” . It’s the point guard situation that it’s frustating and the coach’s innability to let a veteran player know that he is incompetent at his job therefore we are going to play a rookie instead. I still think Nate got a quick hook.

Hopefully Donnie works some magic and brings someone in to take Duhon’s job. Even then I bet that this coach will find a way to give Duhon 15 minutes. What a joke!!!!

  • oscar f

” let the kid douglas play to see what he can do” So i guess you never watched enough knicks games to see what Douglas can do ? I did and he is not the solution to the pg situation. He does what Nate does just not nearly as good. Outside of Gallo and Chandler , the only young I wanna see play is Hill because it has to be justified of why he was picked. He has a good skill set and what i see from him is the ability to be a very good post defender if or when he bulks up 30lbs. He should be groomed as a center in this system . He is nothing like Bosh but is already showing signs of a better post defender . When Bosh guarded Shaq he was completely dominetd and looked very soft (and not only against Shaq) but Hill held his own against shaq despite being out weighed by 90lbs. If he cant do nothing else good im almost positive that Hill will be a strong defensive presense. He has to play starters minutes after the deadline .

  • Mucha

    Good post.

  • Mucha

Toney Douglas is not a point guard. I’m still wondering why Donnie Walsh bought the pick to draft him, seriously.

  • oscar f

What I also find funny is that David Lee who is a damn near 20 and 10 guy doesn’t demand a double team but Shaq who avreages about 11 and 7 does. Lebron basicly said the knicks dont get scoring inside and rely on the outside shot and are a bad team when they dont make thier shots . Good pt. The only thing Cleavland has on the knicks besides Lebron is an inside presense who demands a double team and Im sure Lebron is getting very comfortable with dumping the ball in to Shaq occasinally for a dominate high percentage shot . The knicksd used to have a player like that in Eddy Curry. Curry used to average 19 and 7 after struggling early and you only count his average that season satrting from december when he started playing good he was averaging something like 26 and 8. Now he is in better shape ,still young and looking to prove himself. He struggled in his return due to the fact that there is no Jamal to get those entry passes and lobs . If the knicks get a real pass first pg I would like to see Eddy displayed to see if he is really worthless as everyone says.

  • J_Starks3

“FRAUD” I have been using that word to describe him since he was signed.

  • bob go knicks

Do you actually think that NATE ,as a PG,would solve what is wrong with this team. The PG problem is ,that for the last 2 seasons,we have but one PG on the entire roster,Chris Duhon,.This is the fault of Donnie Walsh….How can an experienced GM go 2 seasons with one PG.Does he look at the roster?Christ! Just by mistake one day,you think he would pick up the roster and say”hey !we only have one PG,”….shit i give up this is so stupid,im not a D’antoni fan,but you cant blame him for not having a second PG to go to.

  • Knicks4life

How soon we forget that we had superstar Anthony Roberson on the team last year asan alternative at the PG spot? I’m sure Donnie thought he was a PG too.

  • Knicks4life

For perimeter defense which we were terrible at last year. I agree with the thinking there.

But how we failed to draft a PG in the deepest PG draft in over a decade is beyond me.

  • Knicks4life

David Lee isn’t really a back to the basket player so it is tough to double him. He is typically facing the basket so which side do you double him from. His move is also lighting quick.

Thing is most individual defenders make the adjusment on Lee after his 8-10 pt bursts anyway and then his pts are off offensive put backs and the pick and roll. I think teams are smart not to double him.

  • J_Starks3

“(douglas) is worst than Duhon because he doesnt pass as good”

    WOW!!!!

How can that statement come out of your mouth.

Can someone else please address this guy…………

Duhon is probably the WORSE NBA PLAYER IN THE LEAGUE RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!

  • Eduardo15

Probably because he thinks that undersized shooting guards is the way to build a winning franchise.

He had dreams of TD and Nate dominating the league and winning several championships.

Or maybe he’ll shift Td to the 3 and bring Mugsy to run the show.. yeah.. sweet..

  • Knicks4life

“Despite “winning” back his job . . .”

I know you put it in quotes because Duhon has not earned his starting spot back. He has absoltuely sucked but had to be inserted back in because Nate just isn’t a PG and other than Al we had no scoring punch off the bench.

But in fairness to Nate he was never really given a fair shot at the starting PG position.

  • J_Starks3

    Good answer.

  • J_Starks3

and he can finish with both hands.

  • LJohnson2k8

What’s bad is yes Nate should not be back on the bench after 2 games but at the same time Nate is used to and more effective setting himself up before his teamates. Duhon is one that due to his limited abilities can set the offense up somewhat then revert to the pick and roll with Lee. So at this point we are lost at the pg position which is really sad. What makes it worse is that I truly have this gut feeling that Lebron is going to stay in Cleveland, especially if the Cavs pull off a trade that will please Lebron. So at the end of the season we may not get that big dream Knick fans been patiently waiting for and we will be looking for a pg at the same time which of course won’t appeal too well to prospective free agents.

  • JeffFinance123

People keep saying Knicks are getting Acie Law. How? There is no trade salary wise that works for Knicks expirers. How are they going to get him?

For people suggesting Jeffries for Augustin, Murray, and Law, please wake up…….

Bobcats aren’t giving away Augustin, or Murray or whoever. They just want to be rid of Law. If there is no match, they’ll just keep him. Its not happening.

  • Knicks4life

Alot of his pts also come off that 15-20 ft jumpshot where the opposing Center is sagging in the lane. If you double him on that somebody is wide open. And unless it is Jeffries that person will make the layup . . . or Duhon . . . or Darko.

  • J_Starks3

    Good post.

  • J_Starks3

I don’t think Nate is the answer at the point but we’ve already known that Duhon is not the answer. We’ve had him for 1 1/2 years and he is still slow, has no shot, can’t set anyone else not named David Lee (which is fine with David).

the coach should at least give Douglas more minutes or Donnie needs to find a PG in the D-league. Someone else othar that Duhon please!!!!!!!!!

  • LJohnson2k8

What it is Jeff is that some Knick fans over value our players as if other teams are beating down the door asking for Jared Jeffries when yes he can help a team defensively but at what price? He makes too much for his limited skills offensively. Acie Law or whoever aint coming here becuase Donnie is almost at the end of the 2 year plan and he will not screw it up for a short term fix on a team that more than likely aint going to make the playoffs anyway.

  • gbaked

i think DW felt he was going to be able to get rubio from Kahn.

He was also stuck in a hard spot. at 8, it was too high to draft Lawson and he obviously didnt like jennings. So you go with Hill because he was the best player available.

  • trenttucker

Good points. What I heard in Lebron’s quote was “keep the wings/shooters (Gallo and Chandler) and get rid of the stretch 4/5s (Lee and Harrington).” Although maybe that was what I wanted to hear.

  • joetheknick

Nobody is being unfair to Nate. The team does not get the best of Nate when he plays the PG position. Nate is a master of creating his own shot. D’Antoni is simply trying to put the best team on the floor. He has tried Douglas. He has tried Hughes. He has tried Lee as a point forward. And he will try these guys again and again until the season is over. I cannot remember a really good point guard on the Knicks since Walt Frazier. Charlie Ward? Chris Childs? Mardy Collins looked like the real deal. Is he still playing?

  • gbaked

    OMG The Sky is falling!

This is a non-story to be honest.

Nate is not a PG and Duhon is not playing well this season.

You are damned if you do and damned if you dont.

Mike D clearly prefers on-court knowledge out of his PG spot and feels he can get that better with Duhon running the show. Its not like nate played such great PG that he should be the starter. He IS better as a SG off thebench. Am I wrong, or was he at his best in the 4th when Duhon was on the court with him.

I find it hilarious that this thread has people talking about not getting LBJ. Donnie walsh gets a cold and the people here think it means that the king wont come here because of it.

  • gbaked

“YIKES! Who Dat says this coach knows what he’s doing?”

    you are such a poser

  • trenttucker

Just a question: would folks be happy if Lebron resigned in Cleveland and we got Joe Johnson for the max? I know I would be. He’s a physical two guard who can score from inside and outside, is not afraid to score in the 4th quarter, plays great defense, and can do a few turns at PG. Only real downside to me is that he will be 29 at signing.

  • Mucha

I like Jordan Hill. The only thing I did not like was the fact that he was not playing.

But the TD move = Fake hustle. He’s not a point guard and he’s not big/athletic enough to be a 2. His $1 million contract will hurt us.

  • Mucha

Well Nate is not willing to play like a pure point guard, or maybe he’s just not capable of doing it. I like Nate Robinson, but he needs to calm down and make sure that everybody gets the opportunity to touch the ball.

  • LJohnson2k8

I would rather have Rudy Gay who is dynamic and carrying the Grizzlies on his back with Z Bo helping out. Joe Johnson to me aint a number 1 player that can bring our team to the next level. He to me is more of a Pippen or sidekick to a Jordan. As far as Lebron I felt for a while and even moreso now that Lebron aint coming to the Knicks and its the CBA among other reasons why he wont. If he does then I am happy if he dont I wont be upset becuase I had a feeling he wouldnt come anyway. I mean what is the draw for him to come? Even after the Knick game againts Cleveland the other night there was a question on ESPN radio directly after the game does anybody feel that Lebron will be coming to NY and alot of Knick fans say no.

  • Mucha

I like Joe Johnson but he’s a chucker… He’s getting older too but at least he doesn’t have to rely on his athleticism to be effective. If LeBron resigns with the Cavaliers, the Knicks should sign JJ if they have the opportunity to do it – no doubt about that. And then trade 2/3 young players for a disgruntled Chris Paul or Deron Williams if Utah wins the lottery – if possible of course.

  • Mucha

    But Joe = Robin.

He’s the last FA signing the Knicks should consider IMO :

    1. LeBron
    2. Wade
    3. Bosh
    4. Johnson
    5. Nobody

  • Mucha

    5. Gay
    6. Nobody

  • BiggieSmalls

you had it right the first time.

  • Mucha

    lol

I like Rudy at $10 mill.

If the big dogs don’t want to come here, then I’d settle for Gay @ 10 but that’s about it. Obviously he doesn’t belong to the max contract conversation.

  • joetheknick

Good post. Even though an efficient PG would help this team this season, that is not the priorty. The priority is trading JJ for an expiring contract. This summer will provide an opportunity to sign a star because the money and the cap space will be available. If you sign a super star, that will set the Knicks up for success. The PG position will be filled by the best available player. If you sign a star who has high assists numbers like Lebron or Joe Johnson, it lessens the need for a high assists PG. Charlie Ward was very capable just bringing the ball up court dishing to Ewing, Larry Johnson, Allan Houston, etc and then doing the little stuff.

  • pepsiporch

Its not about the playoffs anymore . If the Knicks think they will make them they are insane . Start Nate Duhon is horrible to watch no hustle no confidence backup pg at best .

People want to see Nate play rest of year .

    Lets go Knicks

I am starting to lose faith in this team of Walsh DAN2010 Project /.

  • trenttucker

I like your list, I just wonder that given that the Knicks will have some size (Hill, Gallo, even Chandler and Bender), I wonder if a 2 guard isn’t their real need — so I might swap Bosh and Joe Johnson. He seems to have a more controlled game these days.

I like that Gay isn’t afraid to take big shots, but I can’t remember how well he plays defense — I’d need to see him again. If he doesn’t play D, I really don’t want him even for $10m.

  • trenttucker

It’s not about the playoffs, but it is about winning a few games — free agents don’t want to come to teams that have horrible records. So even if they don’t make the playoffs but win a few games, they will be more attractive.

Mind you, I don’t think that makes any sense, just that that’s what players tend to think. Next year’s team will look very little like this year’s team. But players are stupid.

  • Boots

I don’t get how Nate got just a”quick look.” He isn’t a rookie and this is not he first time that he has been tried at point. This is just the first time that he has started at point.

It was hoped that he might inject some enegy into the team. It didn’t happen until Duhon came in at point and Nate moved to the two. Even Nate looked relieved that he could get back to doing what he does best, shoot the ball.

  • pepsiporch

Yeah because 31 wins is alot different then 34 wins . Players do not care if Knicks win or lose . Its all about the money they will come if they know they can make the money if they cannot make up the difference they will not come here .

Wade is the only one I see with shot of coming here

  • x-man

There lies the problem dude! I’m glad you’re finally trying to catch up! lol

  • J_Starks3

OK we’ve established that Nate is not the answer at the point but we ALL know that Duhon is not the answer either. Give douglas a try, Larry Hughes or anyone from the D-league.

  • gbaked

i wouldn’t mind Camby on the team again.

obviously not for even close to a max deal.

also wouldnt mind Ginobili (not close to max) or Stoudemire (not for max, but more then others)

also very interested to see what pierce and dirk do. have they both come out and said they will both stay?

  • Tissues

    New York: N. Robinson 26 Pts, 4 Reb, 6 Ast, 1 Stl, 1 Blk

When’s the last time Duhon put numbers up like that?

Nate doesn’t run the point as good as some guards but he puts up better numbers than Duhon.

  • gbaked

i like hill too. I am just saying I think DW thought a PG was going to fall to him. I mean… at the point of the 5 pick there were 3 top PG left and 3 teams including us. If Kahn didnt go all crazy one we would have either rubio/flynn/curry and this conversation would not be happening.

  • x-man

Yikes, Douglas has played a hand full of games and you think that’s enough time to judge this dude? We have seen enough of Duhon and if TD had 1/3 the PT that Duhon gets, we would know better.

The young kids will make many mistakes and this is the perfect time to give them PT and help them develop. Our Knicks NEVER gave our youths time in years past much because we always stated we didn’t have time here to watch someone develop. What’s the excuse now?

We are ree-tarded as a team strategically. TD can’t possibly do as bad as Duhon nite in and nite out after playing for the rest of the year.

  • BigDaddybluesman

I think Isiah even now is a better point guard then anybody on the roster.

  • gbaked

wasnt Duhon on the floor most of the 4th quarter when Nate put up most of those numbers?

  • Boots

The league has adjusted enough that Lee has been taking more shots from farther out to get his points. They have also adjusted enough to the P and R tht he has to pass more often, and his turnovers have been increasing.

  • x-man

Contributing mightily huh? lol Duhon should have been on the bench and Chandler should have been in for him. We had a more athletic team in the game but with Duhon providing very little.

  • trenttucker

Yeah, but Duhon played the point for most of the second half in that game. Also, Nate did not get Chandler involved AT ALL: Nate made one assist to Chandler, zero to Gallo in that game. You do have to watch Nate to realize he’s not a PG. This is what happens when he brings the ball up: he tries to drive and dribbles back out, he tries to drive again and dribbles back out, he then either shoots a jumper, or flips it to Harrington or Lee with a few seconds left for a jumpshot. It’s painful to watch.

  • x-man

You really must think Players are stupid then because good players will know this team tried to peddle b.s. instead of developing players to keep around or trade up for better players in 2010.

Good players are not gonna be snowed to come here based on us winning a few more games when they can see ans smell the stench!

We will only attract non winners looking to make money only if we did that!

  • gbaked

also… those look like great SG numbers to me.

  • Tissues

Duhon is a PG and Lee is a C.

And anyone on this forum can be the 12th man!

  • BigDaddybluesman

Simple, because he has no idea what he’s doing and neither does D’Ass. It seems the only thing Walsh was good at was getting rid of good players with big contracts. But what else has he done? He can’t even find a PG for this team. Let’s face it he sucks.

Yes they have a wealth of knowledge beyond the posters here but that does not make them competent nor does it give them the ability to make good choices.

That statement that he just did not have a feel for Jennings, sticks in my gut. And picking Gallo who I like over Lopez was insane.

  • Knicks4life

Doc Rivers, Derrek Harper? Bost past there prime but both really solid PGs.

Mark Jackson, Rod Strickland? Not Walt but certainely better than the guys you mentioned.

  • Knicks4life

Dirk, Amare, Boozer? Felton or Rudy Gay for less than the max?

There are still options at #5.

  • x-man

True, that is why you start TD or put Hughes in to play along with N8.

I wouldn’t start N8 and I would use him off the bench to create instant offense. I would put him with Harrington and let them play first one get the ball shoots! lol

Gallo should be in the game when N8 and Harrington are not. They make Gallo out to be mannequin in the corner.

We lose nuthin with Duhon on the bench other than the pick and roll with Lee which every team knows is coming and can defend when they really needs to.

    Duhon is unrecylcable garbage.

  • Knicks4life

But the money is all the same. Unless you really believe the marketing dollars are that much more significant in New York.

And if they are please show me some evidence of this fact. Other than a Yankee what New York sports figure is clearly outearning the others members of his sport in endorsement dolalrs?

I just don’t see it but am always open to a different perspective.

  • Knicks4life

TD and Hughes aren’t PGs either.

It is an impossibly frustrating situation.

Donnie Walsh did his coach no favors in structuring this roster without a starting caliber PG on the roster ,especially when you consider that this offense is premised on the play of the PG.

  • gbaked

    “Duhon is unrecylcable garbage.”

said he of the garbage post.

I think Dirk will resign with the Mavericks.

Amare Stoudemire? He’s not significantly better (he’s better though) than David Lee but he’s injury-prone and he’ll command a bigger contract (All-Star credentials). The same goes for Carlos Boozer. Raymond Felton is a good point guard but he’s not an All-Star caliber PG. The Knicks have to get an All-Star, they should not settle for less. I give Gay the benefit of the doubt since he’s only 23 years old but the Knicks should not offer him more than $10-11 mill per if LeBron/Wade/Johnson/Bosh are off the free agent market IMO.

  • Mucha

PS : Stoudemire IS better than Lee – and so is Boozer – but he’s not significantly better than Lee at his price since he’s injury prone and probably more expensive.

  • x-man

True but this isn;t about having a perfect scenario. It’s about playing anyone better than Duhon. We need to see what TD can do when given PT for a longer duration.

WE KNOW DUHON SUCKS. MUST IT BE PROVED EACH NIGHT?

  • Mucha

Donnie Walsh desperately needs to make a trade for :

    1. Ricky Rubio
    2. Johnny Flynn
    3. Jerryd Bayless
    4. DJ Augustin

    Period.

  • x-man

You go play with your wii wii!

  • Mucha

    I agree.

Flynn was reportedly not on the Knicks radar though, Walsh might have drafted Hill regardless.

  • joetheknick

You got my vote. I see Boozer is not on your list?? What about Lee??

  • trenttucker

    Youre probably right.

I wonder what it must be like to be a fan of another team, where we could argue about things a little more important than whether Chris Duhon (completely untalented garbage), Larry Hughes (talented but completely garbage), or Tony Douglas (garbage on offense to date, but at least he’s good on defense and I find it interesting that he has no tattoos) should be our starting point guard. I feel sad for myself.

  • ds2488

Unfortunately, I honestly believe this is the right move, and i hate to say it because I keep thinking Nate will turn some kind of corner. i would have liked to see him given more of a chance though, but honestly the ball just doesn’t move like it should when he’s the pg. Time to give Douglas a shot at this point. He looked like he could do it in the summer league, and whatever he doesn’t give you on offense I am sure he could more than make up for it with his defense. These players can’t be judged after less than 5 games or so playing in a position, its just unfair to do that to young guys. DW should start looking to make some moves, although I understand its really tough with not wanting to add cap space next year. Tough situation for both Walsh and Dantoni but thats what you get when you come to this god forsaken team I guess. Thanks Zeke.

  • trenttucker

I agree that we need a PG, but:

    1. Not going to happen for at least a couple of years — Kahn would have to commit seppuku.
    2. I guess. But what are you going to trade? Chandler or Gallo? Doesn’t seem worth it. Better to get an FA.
    3. Another short combo guard who loves to chuck and doesn’t really want to play the point? No thanks.
    4. Okay, but I’d rather spend the extra cash on Felton, who will be an FA. Would only go for Augustine if Felton’s impossible.

  • Tissues

Duhon averages a little over 7 points and 6 assists which are horrible numbers. Duhon can run the point better than Nate but this is an offensive team that lacks defense and Duhon doesn’t fit anywhere.

Him and Jared Jeffries should fly with Marbury to China.

  • x-man

Good pts dude! However, how is it tough to play TD? With about 20 games left on the road, this team isn’t going ANYWHERE. This is the ideal scenario to play our youths and began to put the off season moves for next season into play.

Who in the heck will complain that this team missed the playoffs this year? As long as the players give a good effort and try to play smarter each night, it’s a win win for us.

Hill, TD, Landry should be getting major minutes whether they start or not. Maybe it’s telling that this coach can’t develop young players…..or older players…..or just players!…just saying!

  • BiggieSmalls

lets wait til 2011 and sign Z bo and Craw..

  • J_Starks3

where is A’mare in your list???

not that I am a fan of his but just curious.

  • gbaked

if that happened. I can see people upset about our PG situation and the hill pick. Cause we do NEED a pg.

  • barnaby8787

Never thought I would say this but I actually want DJ Augustin to be our point considering (sadly) he’s our best option. Maybe we can get the guy to put up like 12-15 points and 5-7 assists in the near future. Not enough for a championship team, but our options are seriously limited and I don’t see how duhon is gonna rise suddenly to the occasion, never the less acie law…

  • x-man

LOL, I hear ya and for me, it’s all about positing for next year and beyond. No one is really safe and mgmt needs to make sure these players play out the year with effort and better b-ball IQ.

Let the youth movement begin. I would put Curry sorry a-s-s in to see what he can do so that we can maybe move him. This is where the GM has to get the coach on the same page!

Sometimes you have to lose the battle to win the war! This year is just a battle and we have two black eyes and broken rims. Live to fight tomorrow

  • x-man

LOL, Anyone of this forum can be the 8th-12th man on this team since all they do is sit on the bench!

  • barnaby8787

    1) Rubio will NEVER play in minny. Kahn will get over it and trade him sooner than expected.
    2) I would trade anyone the knicks have with the exception of maybe gallo for johnny flynn. Gallo/Chandler/anyone else can’t make an uptempo system team a winning one; a good point guard can (granted, with some talent around them)
    3) Agree sort of. I like his speed and I don’t see him as much of a “chucker” but his value to us at this point is no more than that of nate robinson’s.
    4) We’ll have to wait to sign felton. He’s playing really well in charlotte and they won’t trade him; especially when they would be left with no options at the point b/c law isn’t playing and LB hates DJ…

  • Knicks4life

The only one who may be available by the deadline on that list is DJ.

And unfortunately I’m beginning to think more and more that the Knicks have no tradeable assets.

Again we had a rival GM today talking about Gallo being a “one trick pony”. Again we are the only ones around the league even talking about Wilson Chandler.

Jeffries, Duhon, Hughes.? Who are we supposed to trade for a starting caliber PG. I can’t see Donnie trading David Lee for any of the above players.

Our failure to draft one continues to haunt us.

  • Knicks4life

I think getting a PG who can run the offense is more important than what stats that person produces.

At this point, I would settle for Charlie Ward type efficiency.

  • trenttucker

Yes, I think many players are idiots. Look at all the potential FAs badmouthing New Jersey because they suck this year. The same New Jersey that will have Lopez, Harris, Lee, CDR, a top four pick (maybe John Wall) and $24 million in cap space for 2010-11. Oh, and they are moving to Brooklyn in two short years.

If we can’t trade Jeffries, I think that Gay ($10m), Felton ($7m), and Haywood ($7m), might be the way to go. Then we’ll have $18m in space (Curry, JJ contracts) for an FA or a sign in 2011 or a trade whenever.

  • barnaby8787

By the way, I kind of wonder if the bucks would be willing to part with someone like ridnour. He’s not the answer to our problem, but definitely an upgrade. Maybe they would be interested in someone like harrington. Something like a harrington for ridnour and kurt thomas deal?

  • Mucha

    1. I agree but you never know, Rubio’s camp + Kahn = blackmail

    2. I’d trade Chandler for Flynn in a second.

    3. Bayless is a combo guard but he’s 6’3 (not significantly undersized) and he reminds me of Monta Ellis. He’ll be a much better defender than Nate Robinson – if Nate was 6’3 he’d actually be the starting 2 guard in my opinion.

    4. Fair enough – but I think Augustin’s potential/contract are attractive.

  • barnaby8787

Agreed but with running the offense also comes points/assists. A point guard needs to find the open man (get assists), in order to run an offense.

  • Mucha

“Again we are the only ones around the league even talking about Wilson Chandler”

    Not necessarily true.

Kevin McHales LOVES Chandler – he said on NBA-TV that his development could propel the Knicks to the playoffs. And he was a GM 2 years ago.

  • Mucha

lol Donnie Walsh better have a great product to offer in 2011.

    July 2011 = DEADLINE.

  • trenttucker

Felton’s not resigning in Charlotte. They offered him a long-term deal and he turned it down and signed for the qualifying offer this year. They didn’t even hook him up with a few extra bucks a la David Lee. He should be pissed.

  • barnaby8787

I disagree with the chandler point also. I remember when we were in trade rumors with houston for tmac, the houston blog on yahoo sports were saying that they wanted chandler. I know it’s only a blogger and rockets fans as opposed to personnel, but I think people recognize that chandler is going to be a potential all-star in his prime.

  • barnaby8787

He turned down the long term contract b/c of the economy. Also, he’s in a less competitive market now for point guards as he is the only decent one on the market come the off-season. He’ll be able to draw in more money. He’s from south carolina and he went to UNC, he’ll stay there barring nobody else offers him that much more than charlotte is willing to.

  • trenttucker

I like the idea for the Knicks, but Ridnour is having the year of his life backing up Jennings. It’s the perfect combo for them. Whenever Jennings gets too Nate Robinson on them, they sub him out and put in Luke. I bet Luke resigns there at the end of the year.

And there is no way Scott Skiles would allow Al Harrington on to his team.

  • trenttucker

    That sucks.

  • barnaby8787

Agree but you never know. And if skiles lets jennings on his team, he’ll let harrington.

  • barnaby8787

    ????

  • Mucha

    Injury-prone

    Probably overpaid

    Damaged goods

I don’t think he’s significantly better than Lee considering all the risks

  • Mucha

Wade, LeBron and Bosh are too good to pass on.

Joe Johnson is not better than Stoudemire/Boozer but he fills a void at the shooting guard spot.

We could resign Lee, Boozer and Stoudemire are not necessary.

  • trenttucker

I was hoping the Knicks would get him. I’ve become a big fan of his this year.

  • trenttucker

I like playing TD in theory and when I watch him play defense, but on offense he is so horrible. He shoots way too much (and not even that well), and shows no real feel for the game that could eventually translate into assists/getting people involved. I know it’s early in his career, but I do get a good feeling for Jordan Hill in limited minutes. If Hill could finish better, and develop one or two fluid post moves, he could be a very solid PF/C. With TD, I find few foundational skills on the offensive side of the ball to make me think he will be a good PG someday.

TD might be better learning to nail the corner three and coming in as a defensive stopper who can spread the floor and hit threes — kind of like a Bowen/Fisher type.

  • ds2488

You’re right Trent , JHIll is a post move away and a pump/head fake while looking for contact and going up strong away from being a pretty good player in my opinion. He plays defense the right way, contests everything, and is very active in general. I think he can be good with some further development, but he needs consistent pt to do that, which Im not sure I can trust Dantoni to do. I like TD’s defense definitely, and you’re right his offense is questionable, but right now the point shouldn’t be to win, it should be to develop young guys, even if it hurts your chances at winning but that also hasn’t been proven definitively in my opinion. These guys just need pt, we suck anyway so i don’t see the problem with it like X was saying.

  • Mucha

I think the coaching staff has done a pretty good job with Hill so far.

He used to leave his feet too often and play defense with his arms – he looks like a legit post defender now.

He still needs to be more aggressive around the basket (dunk it dunk it dunk it) and find the right spots to get rebounds but I think he’ll be fine.

  • HaS

    Attention please, attention!

Rudy Gay is a RESTRICTED Free Agent, meaning the Memphis Grizzlies have the right to match ANY offer sheet he signs. I repeat, Rudy Gay is a RESTRICTED Free Agent, meaning the Memphis Grizzlies have the right to match ANY offer sheet he signs!

They offered him 10 or more mil per just THIS PAST OFFSEASON!! So why would they let him walk for similar numbers THIS COMING OFFSEASON for absolutely nothing?

Not happening, unless the Knicks overpay for him. Period.

  • Mucha

    Attention please!

    I know dat Has!

I think the Grizzlies would match but if the big free agents are not available then Donnie Walsh should at least make an offer.

  • ds2488

I think the coaching staff can and does do a relatively good job developing young guys, my only problem is occassionally with Gallo and the lack of plays called for him. But overall, Gallo, Wilson, and Hill have developed nicely. But for all of them, pt is the most important. Hill didn’t start to develop until he was getting more pt. Thats my problem with everything about HIll and Douglas, they need to be getting pt consistently and a lot especially when the team is this bad anyway.

  • Mucha

I agree with everything you said but I liked the fact that Hill sat against the Bucks and the Wizards. He was missing lay-ups, taking bad shots etc. he needed to calm down. But he needs to play – at least 20 mpg in my opinion. The fact that he has only played 21 games is ridiculous.

  • ds2488

Yes couldn’t agree with you more. But there are going to be ups and downs with rookies like that, they need to be playing period. Look at the Bucks and Jennings now, he’s had some miserable moments maybe even more than good ones, but he’s getting the pt to constantly develop and maintain his confidence no matter how bad he’s playing, and for that he’s a special player. Of course he is in a different league than Hill as of this moment, but it seems every other night he goes 2-10 or something like that since his incredible start to the season. Yet Skiles is sticking with him and I think that has and will continue to pay off big time for Jennings and Bucks. Obviously since Hill was picked even earlier than Jennings and was very good in college, theres no reason he shouldn’t be afforded the same opportunites that rookies like Jennings have gotten, regardless of some of the bad moments, which I agree were bad.

  • bob go knicks

    2nd worse,douglass is the worst

  • bob go knicks

i can see the whole thing blo0wing up in walsh’s face, and the KNICKS continue to suck

  • x-man

Dude, The Nets have another problem all together. Good players are leery about coming to NJ swamp with less than half the place being filled. That’s not much around the place ya know!

  • x-man

lol You’re such an a-s-s kisser! You must get paid by the suction! Does DVJ know that you’re trying to move in on his turf?

  • BigDaddybluesman

Nate can play PG, he does not want to. I have seen him for short periods of time actually play very well.

But you can see he loathes it, he does not want to be a PG. He’s stupid, someone should smack some sense into him, nobody ever made anything of themselves as a 5’9″ shooting guard. He’ll always be backup’s backup.

But if someone is that immature there is nothing anybody can do. The only thing we should do is say goodbye. I don’t know why we even resigned him.

Bottom line we needed a point guard or two. That way we have 3 to choose from. Whomever has the hot hand is in and you rotate them. That’s what you when you have only mediocre players at a position. You make a situational rotation.

I know Walsh has used the 2010 free agent thing as an excuse for not doing the right thing. I looked, as far as I see there are no really good point guards in FA 2010.

I’m resigned to the fact that 2014 or there abouts is our year once we have a competent GM and head coach.

  • bob go knicks

how could it take 4 years to get a PG?

  • BluEandOrange

Why cant the team just play Toney Douglas? Lets see what the kid can bring now instead of waiting later. Just start Toney Douglas.

Duhon we know is crap, Nate refuses to play point, and Larry Hughes cannot be the consistent PG because of his ball handling inefficiencies.

Douglas has the quickness, the handles, and the potential. He did play PG at FSU.

He is the best option right now and its time for D’Antoni to play the best players. That means Hill should be in the starting lineup as well as the center because god knows this team needs defense.

  • bob go knicks

augustine may turn out to be slightly better than Duhon, but he is not the long term answer. And anyone blaming D’Antoni for this shit, doesnt know what hes talking about. Our roster just doesnt have the talent that Donnie Walsh promised. No PG,NO SG<NO LEGIT CENTER,but mike ,go out and do what you can with it!Donnie Walsh is a disgrace. You cant PLAN a team based on what might be available in 2 years, and pass on some talent ,because the CAP might go down. That really doesnt sound like a real solid plan.Unless Donnie and Lebron shook hands on a deal 2 years ago,you just cannot build a team this way.If anything Mike D'Antoni w as blatently lied to as to what players would be supplied. You should almost feel sorry for MD.He was sold wolf tickets,And the fans now expect him to make diamonds out of dog shit.No matter what line-up he sends out there,HE DOESNT HAVE A PG!DUHON CANT HELP,NATE CANT HELP,DOUGLASS?ARE YOU KIDDING ME?They have to get some talent in here,by now there shoulda been at least a couple of pieces of veteran talent on this team.Thats what Donnie the Genius promised mike

  • NoVaCaInE

LeBron is not going to leave his home state where he is comfortable and is the biggest star in town just to come to NY and play with Gallo and Will. Donnie does not have a PG or a C in place. If Hill were to get more PT and show that he could be the 5 of the future then maybe LeBron would consider it. There are too many holes on this roster for him to take that gamble. It just does not make any sense. If this team where somehow able to trade Jeffries and save 2-3 million on Curry’s deal (AINT HAPPENING) then we would def have a shot. A line up of C-Hill, PF-Bosh, SF-Gallo, SG-LeBron, PG-Jason Williams? With a bench of Nate, Chandler, Bender, Douglas would be enough to entice LeBron. This is the only way I can see LeBron leaving Cleveland.
