MSG Going Public…

by Ben Kopelman on February 9th, 2010 at 5:55 pm

There have been a handful of reports about this throughout the day, but I thought this one from the LA Times (of all places) put the story together best:

“Investors will get a chance to bet directly on the fortunes of the New York Knicks and Rangers and their home arena, Madison Square Garden, beginning Tuesday.

“Cablevision Systems Corp. is splitting into two, returning the company to its roots as mainly a provider of subscription TV. The newly separate Madison Square Garden Inc. will include the arena, the basketball and hockey teams, regional sports channels and famed theaters such as Radio City Music Hall.

“By separating Madison Square Garden, investors who initially bought Cablevision for the steady cash flow of a cable TV company will get what they wanted.

“On Tuesday, shareholders will get one share of Madison Square Garden for every four Cablevision shares they own.

“Separating the businesses could make it easier for the cable TV operations to be sold. While son James Dolan remains Cablevision’s CEO after the spinoff, he is widely believed in the industry to have a special interest in MSG, where he will be executive chairman. The other five children aren’t believed to want to run the cable TV company.”

I’m sure there will be more to unfold in the coming days…stay tuned…

  • Jon

DJ Augustin for Big Baby rumors swirling…. interesting to see if knicks can get involved by throwing around Nates name to Boston and find a hope for the future for the Knicks black hole, the PG position

  • barnaby8787

-Amare deal right now is rumored as a three way with detroit and philly; main points are amare to detroit, ben gordon to philly, speights and iggy to phoenix. Other minor parts.

-Obviously the rumors with camby. ESPN insider thinks that darko for camby would work and then they could buy out darko’s contract, but I don’t see it happening.

-Ridnour’s on the block. I said personally yesterday that I think that Ridnour and Kurt Thomas for Harrington would be a good deal for both sides.

-Dallas is pushing for Caron. Howard to washington.

-Supposidely, tyrus thomas could be had for virtually nothing (barring it’s an expiring i’m assuming). Maybe duhon for tyrus and cash? Might sound like virtually nothign for the guy but del negro has chris richard above him supposedly on the depth chart. Duhon would become the backup point if they could trade hinrich. It would work as long as we can get somebody (anybody) to replace duhon at the point.

  • x-man

Yikes! Even the cable Tv investors don’t want any part of this team! Don’t sound like they have much faith in 2010-11 either. Can’t blame em though!

  • Boots

There was a rumor a couple of years ago that the Dolans were deliberately working to devalue MSG so as not to have to pay the shareholders as much.

  • x-man

Well, that’s one thing they are succeeding at! playing Duhon each night and having this coach do the things makes this a reality.

  • Boots

Is this going to become the game thread?

    Quick X, write a thread!

Do we get to see Duhon and Nate as a tandem for major minutes tonight?

If this happens, is there any sense in even putting Gallo on the court?

  • barnaby8787

If JJ is hurt, we can’t trade him…

  • x-man

LOL, Tommy Dee is sleeping on the job again!

Duhon is already ignoring Gallo on the court. It’s amazing how he never passes the ball to Gallo. Gallo hits a 3 and Duhon comes down the court and never even look at the dude.

When is this coach gonna address this?

  • x-man

RapheAL has an assist! I’ve seen it all now!

  • Boots

Lol. I don’t usually get into the name stuff, but damn, does he look like one of the turtles.

  • Hydr0

    that’s absurd

  • Hydr0

You guys always complain that people don’t involve gallo in the offense, but he leads the league in 3 point attempts….how are those two things possible at the same time?

  • Hydr0

Tommy, can you hurry up an hire someone…even if their only job is to put up the game thread

This isn’t the first time it’s happened

  • Boots

Because most of the passes come to him from players other than Duhon or Nate. Because many of his attempts come at the end of the clock after the play has broken down, and that is part of the reason his percentage has fallen. With plays run for him, and with getting the ball to him in the open court on the move, Gallo would be averaging more than 13-14 points a game.

  • ds2488

Yeah whats up with the no game thread. Add Jon Brockman to the list of people who have dominated Lee in the paint, although I will say that guy is a truck and works his butt off. Great defense on Casspi, Im not sure if I’ve seen him hit a contested shot yet other than the dunk over Gallo. There defense is awful and people have no idea whats going on anymore..they keep switching but going to the wrong guys. And Duhon sucks, why is this guy able to chuck up 24 footers with 20 seconds left on the shot clock. Just terrible, but at least we are somehow winning.

  • Boots

If I recall correctly, Vecsey also mentioned it when it was bouncing around. It two, maybe three years ago. Just a rumor.

  • UpstateNY28

id love to have Camby on the team next season imagine if we could get Lebron …with camby Lee Gallo Chandler and the young guys…i gotta ask this to and to me it could be a real possibility but why dont the knicks try to see about aquiring Jose Calderon ?? the guys is a legit point guard and i think he’d be great on our team and for some weird reason he never plays in toronto i mean jarrett jack isnt better than him IMO but he starts and gets the major minutes …maybe we could package jared jeffries and toney douglas?? im not sure what his contract looks like but i think if somehow we could get him in a trade sign lebron and camby this offseason resign lee and that is a championship contender

  • ds2488

I was just thinking how shockingly bearable Chucketts has been to watch tonight…and then he immediattely chucks a 3 from halfcourt the second he touches the ball and then does an awful job defensively on the final shot by rodriguez. Nice work Chucketts, you never cease to amaze me.

  • Boots

Wow! End of the third. Close-up of Gallo showed him upset and in pain. That right forearm hurts. Is that the same spot on his arm that he hurt earlier this season? I’ve been saying that his shot has been off a bit since then.

  • ds2488

And then he puts his head down on the first play of the 4th quarter and spins out of control only to get bailed out by the refs. Incredible.

  • Hydr0

I believe when you say there was a rumor. I just thought the actual rumor was ridiculous.

  • Hydr0

I understand, but the offense isn’t run through Gallo. The offense is run through Lee. This is something designed by D’antoni. That’s not Duhon or Nate’s fault. Besides leading the league….leading the league ……in any shot catagory tells me the guy is getting plenty of chances already.

  • Hydr0

Toney Douglas and Jared Jeffiries is not getting us Jose Calderon….but I would take your team in a second

  • Mucha

LMAO you love Harrington don’t you.

  • ds2488

Knicks greatest hits right now haha. Up a bunch of points. Lets have a nice Duhon chuck(about his 8th of the game) and let it airball leading to an easy fastbreak for Tyreke. Ok now that thats out of the way, Lets have Chucketts put his head down and go 1 on 5 yet again, miss, and wide open 3 for Knick killer Donte green. Nice, lets keep them in this game.

  • Mucha

8 points in less than 30 seconds

    Brilliant

    Will is balling though.

  • ds2488

Haha spoke too soon. Add JJ wide open missed layup to the list. Awesome

  • Mucha

OK so Wilson Chandler’s on fire and he touches the ball once every 4 possessions or something? That’s ridiculous.

  • Mucha

Nate Robinson has done a TERRIBLE job in the 4th quarter.

The fact that Chandler never touches the ball and doesn’t even get rewarded for his steal is CRAZY.

I can’t stand these veterans for real.

  • ds2488

Haha yeah Mucha. You have no idea how much I can’t stand watching him. I would rather this team have the Nets record right now than them be in the playoff hunt with him playing significant minutes haha. I think he has single-handedly stunted the development of every young guy on our team.

  • ds2488

Yeah this is crazy right now with Nate. I’ve never even seen Chucketts do that. 3 straight possesions with Wilson on fire. This is why they suck.

  • Mucha

    Great pass by Harrington.

    Wait.

    Did I really that?

  • ds2488

First off, I will add the obligatory nightly David Lee should be embarrassed. Not only does he refuse to do anything on the defensive end ever, but his boxing out or lack there of is just flat out atrocious. Its crazy, he will not put his body on his man, and it leads to so many extra rebounds for opposing teams. Just watch him on every rebound its crazy.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

evans is good but the knicks makes him look like lebron..

  • ds2488

Secondly, JJ continues to astound with his lack of defensive awareness. He sucks. Listen to Clyde force him to his weak hand or to take a jump shot. Stop trying to body him up and just letting him drive by you every time. He is such a joke..this guy is a defensive stopper? This crap happens every game with JJ. And of course, Chucketts has got to get his licks in. Team killer.

  • Mucha

    Now I understand.

After Harrington makes a pass he feels entitled to throw 4-5 bricks in a row. I get it.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

    ya favorite p.g
    lmao

  • ds2488

    HAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Offensive genius Mike Dantoni and Al Chucketts protege Chris Suckhon really came up with a brilliant play there. BEST MOMENT EVER.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

    evans wins it for them

  • Mucha

    LMFAO

I’m literally rolling on the floor laughing. Really.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

    with no bigman interior D
evans is going to kill them in O.T

  • ds2488

Yes thats the point I always try to make. Don Nelson said it best. “He thinks hes a superstar but hes just not” or something along those lines. Crazy, If he goes a minute without taking a shot he will chuck it the second he touches it. Me and my friends can always predict when Chucketts is going to do his thing.

  • Mucha

Anyways, the fact that Al Harrington and Nate Robinson froze out a red-hot Wilson Chandler who’s only 22 years old is SCANDALOUS.

    I can’t believe it – seriously.

  • ds2488

This is honestly so awesome right now. I am so used to being a Knicks fan that I enjoy watcxhing epic collapses and train wrecks like this. Classic Defense Mechanism. I wouldn’t change getting to watch these trainwrecks on a nightly basis for anything. Does that make me crazy? Haha.

  • ds2488

My name is Al Harrington and I like CHUCKETTS. Haha.

  • DWknickfan

Are you kidding me, what kind of last play is that? The offensive genius really came up with a creative idea. It’s not easy without Nash. I know plenty of people have said it is not his fault since the talent level is low, but what about other teams like Houston? If coach was that good, he would realize that he needs a more creative play since Duhon has proven for two years that he is NOT Nash. Stop treating the players like stars if they are not stars. Duhon can’t get passed anyone and was scared to look for his shot right off the pick and roll. Say what u want about Nate (he played bad) but he is not scared to take a shot.

  • Boots

Not necessarily so. Statistics are can mean what you interpret them to mean. That doesn’t mean that your interpretation is accurate..

If Gallo gets eight shots in a game, which isn’t nearly enough for what is expected from him, and seven are threes, he can lead the league in threes attempted. The problem is, how many are forced shots because it is the end of the clock and/or he has someone playing him tight and nobody is willing to set a pick or a screen for him. A high number of forced three attempts as opposed to a high number of quality three attempts is what we are commenting on. So he took seven threes, but were they good threes, and were they the only shot that he had the opportunity to take.

Yes, Duhon runs the offense through Lee. Nate “runs” the offense through himself and Harrington, and both will force shots when Gallo is wide open. And yes, Gallo must stand on the arc in the half-court offense as per the coach. There are multiple times in any game when Gallo is open and moving on the wing in transition and Duhon will ignore him and hold the ball.

In the same situation, Nate will ignore Gallo wide open in transition on the weak side and force the bal to the strong side to Harrington or will try to go one on two or three while Gallo is standing there wide open clapping his hands calling for the ball. Shooters need rythym, and there are too many five, six, seven minute stretches where Gallo never gets a touch.

Gallo should be getting the ball in places other than behind the arc. he should be set up for a wider variety of shots. He is shooting a high number of threes because that is what he is given.

That is what we are talking about.

  • ds2488

Whoah look its a miracle. A red hot Wilson Chandler got a touch. Oh MY GOD. OH and JJ was able to force Evans to finally take a jump shot, yet Nate somehow misses the rebound. HAHA. JJ just airballed a layup by a mile. Nice defense on Martin. This is incredible.

  • ds2488

Another huge rebound where Lee doesn’t box out. Wow its crazy.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

    K MARTIN.

  • Mucha

Lee doesn’t want to box out. I don’t know what his problem is. Pathetic.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

    it’s krazy
the knicks best O player lacks D
an there best D player lacks O

  • ds2488

I can’t even begin to put into words how bad Nate has been down the stretch lol.

  • MaKersMark

Is Chris Duhon the worst PG, and possibly player, in the entire NBA? Could you think of one other team in the league where this guy would be getting 20+ minutes, let alone be starting?!? I was only able to come up with the Miami Heat, and would they really start him over Carlos Arroyo or Rafer Alston? Probably not, Duhon is worse than both of them.

Aren’t there D-League players out there? Why was the Nate at point guard experiment (where he averaged 7 assists per game, mind you) scratched so quickly? Where in the world is Tony Douglass? What is going on?

I’m left scratching my head… Duhon should NOT be getting this much run anymore. Is it possible that the team is so delusional that they still think that the playoffs are a possibility? And that Duhon could help them achieve this?!?! I don’t understand… but what do I know, I’m just a commenter on a blog.

  • Mucha

Nate Robinson, David Lee and Al Harrington have been PATHETIC tonight.

I can live with Jeffries’s missed layups because he plays hard within his limitations. But the other guys – TURRIBLE.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

if the knicks don’t score here
most likely the game over over

i think i hear the fat ladies voice it’s coming slowly

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

    thats nate..

  • ds2488

Mucha, your forgetting about Jeffries complete stupidity though. All he has to do is keep backing up off of Tyreke, yet he keeps trying to body him up. Its insane. He has killed them tonight. And don’t forget about Chris Suckhon, who I absolutely believe is the worst rotation player by a mile in the league. Just insane. Lets not forget about Chandler not touching the ball basically ever. Gotta love the Gallo treatment for him.

  • Mucha

    SERIOUSLY?

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

    Ofensive genius

    yea rite..

  • Mucha

I agree but he didn’t freeze out Chandler. Well… he finally did lol.

  • ds2488

    HAHAHAHAHAH

Jeffries channeling Al Chucketts. Dantoni should be fired for his 2 “plays”. Lets have Suckhon run around and chuck a 3. Lets have Jeffries force a 3 from 35 feet with 20 seconds left on the shot clock. HAHAHA. This is the most incredible train wreck I have ever witnessed. This is amazing.

  • barnaby8787

Seems inevitable that the knicks will have a new point guard before they come back from the break. Seems like d’antoni went with the lesser of two evils and nate is forcing shots and playing like an idiot as usual. Either that or we’ll have a new coach considering JJ was allowed to take that shot…

  • ds2488

David Lee with the weak box out. Incredible.

  • Mucha

At least this team knows how to box out.

  • barnaby8787

    Game set Season…

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

told u i heard the fat lady coming

  • DWknickfan

Why was JJ shooting that ball and why was Duhon and JJ not coming back to help on the rebound? It was like they were going to try and get a net hanging bucket. That is horrible, two people on Martin and no one boxed him out.

  • HaS

I guess Jews will be out of the league soon after that blunder (Casspi).

Jeffries is the go to GUY?!

    Sigh.

Chandler is finding his way, I guess that ankle is 100% with all those spin moves tonight.

    Tyreke Evans is a beast.

Knicks lose, but hey _avi_ got another double double! Let’s resign him for 12 million quick, he’s a bargain!

  • Mucha

The question is : Did Mike D’Antoni draw that Jared Jeffries play down the stretch? If he did… oh my. His coaching was terrible tonight, obviously Nate Robinson didn’t help.

    I hate these veterans.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

t doug needs to start playing i’m pretty sure if he plays consistently he will play better than nate an duhon

  • Mucha

We’re tanking for a high 2nd round pick guys.

  • barnaby8787

    chill w/ the jewish comments

  • BluEandOrange

D’Antoni has got to go. This loss is INEXCUSABLE. Wilson Chandler was hot and you don’t give him the ball? This is all on D’Antoni. D’Antoni is an absolute idiot.

Wilson Chandler was passive in the overtime, but as a coach you have to force the hot hand. MAKE CHANDLER TAKE THE SHOT.

D’Antoni is a completely inept at being head coach. I no longer have any doubt that Steve Nash was the actual coach of the Suns before.

This is the Sacramento Kings. The Kings for god’s sake.

  • barnaby8787

Maybe jerry sloan bent over for d’antoni…

  • BluEandOrange

And to those saying Duhon is the best option at PG, you are out of your mind.

I have been saying for weeks that the Knicks need to trade for a good PG or start TD.

TD has more potential that Duhon or Nate and he actually has a future on this team. Play TD NOW.

  • josh h

July 1st here we come! I cant wait to unload these losers and get REAL talent. Extremely disappointing night. Theres no excuses for this loss. We play NO DEFENSE and it is sooooooo annoying. We allowed Jeffries to take a three pointer on a KEY posession. What is D’Antoni thinking!!!

  • HaS

What are you saying? Lee had a double double!! With 21 and 10! He’s clearly an All-Star! He was robbed!

  • HaS

LMAO!!! I guess you missed the other thread.

Apparently “white kids” only live in “rich suburbs”.

  • Mucha

    PATHETIC.

    WHAT A WASTE OF TIME

Wilson Chandler DID NOT deserve it. As a matter of fact he doesn’t deserve to play with A-holes like Harrington and Robinson.

I’ve been a big supporter of Robinson this season but he needs to go. Harrington too. And if the Knicks can trade _AVI_ with _EFFRIES they HAVE to pull the trigger.

I HATE this team. Well I like Chandler, Gallo and Hill but we have the biggest collection of A-HOLES in the NBA. Period.

  • HaS

“We play NO DEFENSE and it is sooooooo annoying”

$100 on _’antoni saying the team didn’t “hit shots” and the Kings did.

  • Qaspec

OKC and Durant on NBA Tv….If I squint just right OKC’s uniforms look like the old school Knick uniforms. Pretending Durant is “Skinny Ewing”

  • HaS

At least Hill got a “chance” tonight.

  • Qaspec

he’s also stunted the development of the E-Trade baby.

    Is Chuckaholic over there?

    Chuck-a-what!!!

  • harris

Another great evening for this franchise.

What was that comment John McKay once said about what he thought
    about his team’s execution?

  • blackwood

_avi_ Lee freakin sucks!! he could not keep dudes off the boards at all!! he better not even think about asking for anything close to 10 mill this off season!!
Anybody for Lucky Luke now after seeing this trash PG play? Anybody for Thompson now? off the bench and was a physical force on the boards and was punking lee with playing strong in the post. Geez why was anybody but Will getting the ball?? why was the best 3pt shooter of all time missing a free throw and playing soft (again) in the end of the day a ball distributor is a MUST!! Will would of had 40 easy tonight & we would of won with a real floor general. What was doo doo doing running the clock down only to run back out and shoot an air ball?? How about driving and at worse get a foul!!! Geez I just threw up in my mouth a little watching the reply!!

  • Mucha

    Yeah.

    *Mike Logan grin*

  • HaS

Sometimes when you box out it allows your teammate to get the board. How does that help Lee’s rebounding numbers?

  • x-man

    lol. That’s no lie!

  • Boots

I’ve said it before. Have you ever noticed the look Lee gives a team-mate if he steps in front of Lee or into the paint to grab an uncontested rebound.

It is as if Lee feels that he has a right nto all uncontested boards, and his team-mate is doing something wrong.

  • BluEandOrange

    The Knicks are a mess
