ESPN: 3-way Deal Likely

by Tommy Dee on February 18th, 2010 at 7:23 am

Via Marc Stein:

“…Multiple sources told ESPN.com that the Rockets and Kings will spend Thursday trying to make this a three-way deal that lands McGrady with the New York Knicks, who have been McGrady’s preferred destination ever since he and the Rockets mutually agreed in late December to find the 30-year-old a new team via trade.

“I think it will happen,” one source close to the situation told ESPN.com of McGrady winding up with the Knicks…

…Sources told ESPN The Magazine’s Ric Bucher that McGrady and Rodriguez would be sent to the Knicks in a three-team scenario sure to feature New York’s Jared Jeffries if it comes to fruition…”

I couldn’t sleep last night with visions of two max contracts cap space dancing through my head. The Sac Town rumors have to be part of a three way, they just have to be. Please.

  • JASONHAYES

Donnie has to take care of business today, and swiftly. Teams are gonna go into a feeding frenzy as 3 o’clock appraoches. Get Tmac, and Rodriguez off the dinner table quickly. Then move harrington to the Bulls for Thomas, and call it a day.

Side note, I know I may be buggin but Sac wouldn’t be interested in a David Lee for Tyreke Evans deal, would they? I would take him and tell Sac to keep Tmac! But that’s probably only in my dreams. Back to the matter at hand, DONNIE YOU HAVE WORK TO DO!!!!!!!!!

  • josh h

If there is such thing as Santa Claus, then this will go down. S-Rod for starting PG! Trade Duhon away for a bag of Frito’s.

  • danisrob

I don’t see what NY brings to the table that is better than the deal Rockets and Kings have together. Maybe Rockets want a big man now Landry is gone, and maybe Kings take one of our picks to add the rebuilding?

I assume JJ goes to Rockets?

  • REELTALKSHAKES

if we end up w/ mcgrady n s-rod, i love this deal……..ne progress on the tyrus thomas deal??? i guess if we get s-rod, we prb won’t pursue ne other pgs….he’s a quick lil fkr, lol…but not the best shooter…pargo or ridnour would be better fits, but shoot, can’t be greedy…lol….i’d be happy w/ the moves…..PLZ DON’T LEAVE US OUT THIS DEAL SAC/HOU….lolol….

  • UpstateNY28

LOL david lee for tyreke evans?? that would be the worst trade in history if sacramento actually agreed …youre talking about a rookie who has played like an all star that in 3 years will be what kevin durant is now and you think theyd take david lee ? whose contract is up after this year and would never resign there

  • REELTALKSHAKES

Rodriguez would likely go to the Knicks as well and Sacramento would receive Jared Jeffries, Larry Hughes along with some sort of package that includes draft picks and/or Jordan Hill.

  • REELTALKSHAKES

yea jason, lol, ez son….lol, THAT WILL NEVERRRR happen, only reason why their getting rid of kevin martin is because he doesn’t fit next to evans, and they are now building their team around evans…lol, wake up son…lol, u still dreaming???

  • TobyKnight

One shouldn’t drink this early in the morning.

Just be grateful if we can get the cap space, T-Mac and S-Rod

  • danisrob

Guess it comes down to, do the Kings want cap space next year or Hill and picks for rebuilding.

Can’t see many big free agents going to Sac so taking on JJ and rebuildng could be the best option, and still having a little cash left to pick up a piece or two.

  • charlie

Given that salaries must match in trades in the NBA, it would have to be for about 2.4 million bags of Frito’s (considering pro-rated salaries)…but, I say get ‘er done!

  • Knicks4life

SRod isn’t a legit starting PG either, or at least I hope isn’t our starting PG after 2010.

But he is way better than Duhon.

  • REELTALKSHAKES

i think sac would take jj, weren’t they willing to take him last yr??? jj n nate for salmons n kenny thomas??? but we stupidly declined…lol, thus the reason why we’re in this situation….

but like i said above, i’d be THRILLED if we can get srod n mcgrady….i jus hope the hold up isn’t jordan hill…if we swing tyrus thomas, NO ONE WILL MISS HILL ONE BIT…..dw needs to realize that….ty is a betta fit in the system than hill is, n BY FAR more developed….send hill to sac w/ larry and jj, and if we have to shoot them boston’s pick that their suppose to give us for nate…

    duhon/s-rod/house
    mcgrady/giddens
    chandler/gallo
    thomas/bender
    lee/curry

I REALLY THINK WE CAN MAKE A RUN FOR THE 8TH SPOT…epecially if wade is out for a long period of time w/ the strained calf….

I DO WONDER DO WE HAVE TO WAIVE LANDRY TO OPEN UP A ROSTER SPOT, OR SHOOT HIM TO SAC so he can now play w/ his brother….

  • giantg

The ESPN quote, “I think it will happen” is being applied to every scenario involving McGrady. Now that TMac has been traded “in principal” to SAC the Knicks are on the outside looking in. And when you are in that position and fogging up the glass it more accurate to say, “I don’t think it will happen.” But hey, I don’t have to sell media headlines for a living…

Walsh is trying to make lemonade out of lemons…The Darko trade is a minor trade but free money (cap space relief) for the Knicks which they can spend in another trade (up to 3mm), Nate to the Celts should involve a draft pick or it doesn’t make much sense, and hopefully Donnie can squeeze out another trade…

  • JASONHAYES

Lmao…aight I hear you guys!!! Thanks for waking me up.

  • Knicks4life

I have a feeling . . . this is going to be a bad day.

  • trenttucker

On another note… how bad are the Knicks? Last night’s game was gruesome. I started feeling really, really bad for Chandler. I almost took the subway out to the Garden so I could give the poor guy a hug. He doesn’t deserve this.

  • jay from the fix

Y is no one talking about conley being available for expiring and a pick? Can you say du du and the pick from Boston ? I hope the tmac deal to ny gets done and the Ty deal. Can we pry Jason Thompson and give them
hill and the picks? Then go after conely as stated earlier? Then ty for al? That’s my dream deals for the day

  • BiggieSmalls

all the Donie loyalists called that deal with sacto last year fantasy

8th seed is pretty much out of the questions after last nights debacle.

  • DatNewYorker

If King James or Wade decides to comes to NY the first thing they need to do is fire coach D’Antoni. They will never win a championship with his system. BRING BACK VANGUNDY.COM

  • Donnie2010

I don’t know if you guys hop around the internet looking for news and rumors like I do – but as an FYI…I have lost all respect for SI and Chris Mannix (I think that’s his name). He has reported about 200 times that the Knicks are “‘finalizing” a deal for T-Mac with Houston. No mention of the Kings and gives no indication that there are potential dealbreakers that still exist.

  • LBJ2010

For the first time in a while, I agree with you. This week will be a major disaster if this deal doesn’t get done.

  • LBJ2010

Heh. Didn’t he tweet something like “Morey and Walsh are savvy GMs who know how to consummate deals so the pick protection should be worked out quickly?” 36 hours later…

  • NoVaCaInE

    +1

The Knicks really need to start looking at other options as well regarding the 2010 Free Agency. Even though I would love to see my fav player don Orange and Blue, I don’t see LeBron leaving. Would we be happy with Bosh and Joe Johnson? In a fantasy world lol, I would sign Bosh and Joe Johnson and try to deal Eddy’s expiring along with Chandler for CP3.
PG CP3 SG JJ SF Gallo PF Bosh C ? That looks like a contending roster to me. Wishful thinking…

  • rocky

Saw a blurb in the paper where the Knicks and Bucks were talking about Ridnour, but the Bucks hung up when Donnie mentioned Jeffries.

Sounds like the Knicks are flailing every which way to make SOMETHING happen…6 hours from now, we’ll know, either way.

  • Jmerms

    In Donnie We Bust.

  • bmathews77

Clearly they’re having problems dumping Jared Jeffries. I say at least make the trade with the Bulls to get rid of Al “ball hog” Harrington for Tyrus Thomas and see what that kid can do here.

  • BobbyFromBK

The player they really need to go for is Tyrus Thomas. After seeing him the past 2 nights, he is long, athletic and brings tough, hard nosed defense every night–and he’s a shot blocker.

    Get Thomas!

  • rocky

Exactly Donnie, (not Walsh but the previous poster)

ESPN seems to love to make rumors into factual news reports long before
they are fact. I guess they figure that if the rumor turns into fact they can trumpet themselves as “you heard it here first”, and if they are blowing smoke as per-usual, they pretend they didn’t report it or spin it “as first rumored”

ESPN blows for sports journalism..good for Sports-entertainment..I guess.

  • joetheknick

Don’t think Houston/Sacramento has any legs. How about moving JJ to Lakers for Morrison; Oklahoma for Etan Thomas; Memphis for Stephen Hunter and spare parts; Charlotte for Acie Law, Flip Murray and A. Ajinca? Someone please take JJ and a NY draft pick.

  • NoVaCaInE

At this point is it worth it to discuss how poor the Knicks play. My only concern is the development of the young players(Hill might not be around soon and Chandler might get dealt for a PG over the summer, that leaves Gallo and Douglas) and July 2010.

  • bmathews77

Yep, I’ve been saying ESPN is terrible from the beginning. Just look at how they are kissing Lebron and the Cavaliers a** every year and the Cavs still haven’t won a championship. I know they want their “Lakers vs Cavaliers” ratings but I hope that doesn’t happen.
On another note, there was a time when you didnt need to sign up to be an “insider” on ESPN to read their articles. Now that site is a waste of time for me. I’ll stick to realgm, hoopshype and yahoo cuz at least they tend to be right.

  • NoVaCaInE

I have not once bashed this coach since he has arrived but it might be time to now. He seems to want a roster full of Yes sir guys. He just doesn’t get along with players with strong personalities. Steph and Amare in Phx, Steph, Nate,Hughes(who I could care less about btw) here in NY. Nate, the only player on this roster with heart he forces Donnie’s hand to get rid of. I’m really starting to dislike this coach. He has half of next season to prove to me that he can make it here.

  • NoVaCaInE

    LMAO!

  • NoVaCaInE

The problem with that deal now that Nate is gone will be no scoring off the bench. The Knicks have to make sure they get T-Mac 1st. Then move Gallo or Chandler to the bench.

  • http://www.reeltalkblog.com Shakespeare

that’s pretty funny caine, i thought bout that exact scenerio last night in my head…lol…if we can’t lebron, i’d take joe johnson and chris bosh in a heartbeat or even amare…..n dnt forget we can sign tyrus thomas prb for less than lee…

cp3, joejohnson, gallo, tythomas, bosh……i think we could contend w/ anyone…REELTALK….

  • LBJ2010

+1. Couldn’t care less about W’s and L’s at this point. Just make sure the young guys get lots of playing time and hopefully improve.

  • NoVaCaInE

Darren Collison sure is looking like a starting PG to me and we all know NO is strapped for cash. You are right Ty might be had for cheap but idk if there will be enough cap space for all 4. With Curry and Will due for raises over the summer a trade for CP3 would work. JJ and Bosh would get max contracts(even though i don’t think they are worth it). That would leave a few mill to fill out the roster. To bad Hill is included in the deal. A CP3, JJ, Gallo, Bosh, Hill lineup is not bad…

  • fredweis

I like our odds of getting TMAC from Sacramento.

Petrie and Walsh have made some significant trades with each other (Brad Miller sign and trade, Ron Artest for Peja) so there is a trust in place.

Swallowing Jeffries contract for 1 season in order to get Hill and picks is a good deal. The Kings weren’t planning to be players in free agency in 2010. Their only goal was to get Kevin Martin’s long term contract off the books.

I actually really like this rerouting of TMAC for the possible inclusion of “Spanish Chocolate”.

Comments have been made that Sergio Rodriguez is not an NBA starter, but he’s a pure upgrade over Duhon, (Mike D can even bring back the SSOL with Sergio on the floor).

The kid is 23 and has championship experience with FIBA and playoff experience in the NBA. He’ll probably be on the Spanish Olympic team in 2010. If not a starter, he’d be a great backup PG for the next 5 years.

BTW – GREAT pickup by Houston getting Martin. Rick Adelman always puts together a great roster wherever he coaches. Arguably the most underrated NBA coach of the last 30 years.

  • fredweis

We’re getting Eddie “Instant Offense” House, and JR Giddens – who was a big time scorer in college – from Boston. That’s plenty of bench offense.

The real problem is the same we’ve had all season – our lack of bigs. If Jeffries and Hill are sent packing to the Kings, and with only guards coming back, that will be even worse.

The lack of big men beyond Lee (and maybe Ty Thomas) makes me wonder about “the plan” this summer. I think Walsh and Mike D must have their sites aimed firmly on Chris Bosh.

  • NoVaCaInE

“BTW – GREAT pickup by Houston getting Martin. Rick Adelman always puts together a great roster wherever he coaches. Arguably the most underrated NBA coach of the last 30 years.”

Agreed!!! He also implemented a SSOL offense in SAC way before yours truly Mike NO D’Antoni came abroad. Most important, he knows how to handle different/strong personalities.

  • NoVaCaInE

He also doesn’t need to have a star at every position to win.
