I love Trades

Finger point to BAC, which has a cool new show in the works.

First off, click on the video player to hear Will Leitch’s reaction to the deadline.

Secondly, as I kid I was always a huge fan of seeing new players in a Knick uniform. Whether it was Larry Johnson, or a mid-year move that brought in Othella Harrington for Erick Strickland, it’s always been really cool. Obviously, there were deals I hated, almost to say, “why did this just happen?”- but even if a player didn’t pan out, it’s a new player in the uniform. I couldn’t stand a deal like Weatherspoon for Moochie Norris, but it was really a “whatever” move at that point.

So I’m psyched for tomorrow.

Can the Knicks compete for the rest of this year? Who knows, it will depend on McGrady and if Eddie House can hit shots. It will depend on just how big an upgrade Sergio Rodriguez is over Chris Duhon. I know point guards, and I’m not sold yet on S-Rod.

I hope I’m wrong.

One thing is for sure, this team is going to run, which may hurt Danilo Gallinari who is pacing himself through his first full season.

Good or bad, they’ll run, and expect games to be back in the 120s.

Hey Tommy, the Knicks desperately need a bigman besides David…

Al, Gallo, Will, or Bender, none of them can play like a bigman, so any word on what the Knicks’ll do with that final roster spot? Sean Williams maybe?

  • josh h

I dont know about you Tommy, but ANYTHING other than Duhon being our PG excites me. I am tired of hearing Walt say every game “Duhon is scoreless in the first” or “Duhon hasnt attempted a FG this quarter.” I would rather have a PG that took shots and actually tried, instead of relying on the pick and roll offense. Because when that doesnt work, we have to rely on Harrington or Lee taking perimeter shots.

    McGrady+S-Rod= A good start

  • the oak

Yea I have been wondering how Gallo will play once D’Antoni brings back his offense. Gallo is not an up-tempo type player. He is not very fluid and his transition game is below average because of that.

  • Hydr0

It kind of makes you wonder why they drafted him in the first place. Maybe the long term plan is not to run? Could that be possible?

  • ds2488

Hey Has, how do you feel about me using your Lee nickname on Suckhon from now on. It would be Chris _uh_n. Anything that takes this bum out of the lineup is a major improvement. I don’t care if its Sergio or any dleague pg or any other guy in the nba, they are all improvements over _uh_n. And I like Sergio a lot, I know Dantoni was part of PHX when they drafted him and liked him a lot, he could be good in a fast break. I think TMac gives us our first playmaking perimeter player in a long time, and House can really help us spread the floor and fit in nicely. I look forward to watching the rest of this season. While we won’t make the playoffs, and may not be that good we can still be fun to watch for the rest of the year. I am also psyched.

  • erik

Gallo may struggle in the run n’ gun. I noticed he has a noticeable “hitch” in his step while running. He kinda looks clumsy out there. His awkward running motion may lead to injuries.

I like Wilson and Gallo as our 2 young building blocks. But i see a problem in that they both play the same position (SF). I think we will ultimately have to trade one of them.

Am I the only one who thinks Wilson is the better player and also has much more potential? The general consensus is that Gallo is the better prospect, but I don’t see it that way.

  • Hydr0

I love seeing Hill and Jeffries holding up another teams jersey. I wasn’t a big fan of either of them. Watching Nate hold up the Celtics jersey…that will be tough.

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge
  • Hydr0

I like Chandler better…you’ve gotta give Isiah props for drafting him. If you have to trade one of them, I’d trade Gallo.

  • Boots

He was an up-tempo player in Italy. He actually can play well in the open court. Look at the videos.

He ran the wing well early in the season until he realized that Duhon was never going to give him the ball. Then he gave up.

I recall, on several ocasions, when Gallo had the ball and brought it up quickly that he had to stop and wait for Duhon to catch up. How many times have the Knicks had a break this season and Duhon stopped and dribbled and wasted the break. When Nate had the ball on a break, why would anybody other than Harrington run with him? You knew who was going to take the shot.

Let’s see what happens with a PG who can, and is willing to, pass the ball forward on the move.

  • BiggieSmalls

Im grateful to see some fresh faces in the uniform.

I want to see A LOT of Sergio Rodriguez.. This coach has been lusting after him since he was drafted and PHX traded him away for $$$.

Lets also see what TMac has.. If he’ll take 1.3 as a vet it only counts like 700k against the cap.

So i hope that maybe Eddie house will stop talking about the Celtics and takes a leadership role./. Maybe if he’ll take 2 mil we can fit him into the budget. I like that he’s won a ring. But Nate is gonna go off in Boston. Can I root for the Celtics in the playoffs?

props for Donnie for putting it all on 2010. Dont give the money to Lee.

  • ds2488

I think Gallo will be better suited in the future as a 4, thats what they drafted him for. If he puts on some muscle, him and Chandler are a really good complement at the 3 and the 4. He would be perfect in an uptempo offense as a “stretch” 4 in my opinion. He needs to put on some more muscle this offseason, they don’t want to risk putting him in there too early and hurting himself again.

  • BiggieSmalls

i guess you could say Im excited about watching the next 29 games with zero expectations..

And put Fat Eddy in there too.. That should be entertaining.

  • barnaby8787

LOL, Jamison is 0 for 8 at half. No points, 3 boards, 1 steal in 14 minutes off of the bench. That’s how you surround LBJ with talent. They’re tied with charlotte, 50-50 at half…

  • manners

Josh h agreed. His former coach even says that he’s young and makes mistakes buy that he loves the open court and can be fun to watch. Donnie Walsh says he’s quick and can shoot the rock. When was the last time be said that about Duhon. I like the Sergio and Douglas combo. Tommy you my Knicks man but I think your wrong. Besides how many times have you really seen S-Rod play??

  • erik

That’s a good point. If he does fill out to be a 4, it can work out.

  • manners

Eddie might be fat but that contract of his will pay off big time come next season when other teams are posturing for the Melo/Paul sweepstakes. We could trade him and his fat contract for a number of options

  • harris

lol-look at Jamison’s shooting numbers from his first half as a Cav.-
there’s that second “star” that ‘bron so definitely needs.

  • barnaby8787

I posted something ten minutes (look up)…i think it’s hilarious…he’ll get to pick whoever he wants in ny and they will 9/10 be better than jamison…fact is, they needed amare, hands down.

  • manners

Eddie House will be in a different uni next season.and yes let’s see Sergio. Tommy Dee your my boy but let’s see Sergio play. He’s only 23 in a different country fighting for pt

  • harris

tip of the cap to you my friend-you called it first.

  • barnaby8787

Cleveland is now down by 14 going into the 4th to charlotte. Jamison is 0-10 from the field…

  • Hydr0

paul is not a free agent in 2011

  • BigDaddybluesman

See what you just said, Gallo is NOT an up-tempo player. Then why in hell did Walsh draft him knowing D’ass wants to run run run.

See it makes no sense and it proves Donnie boy screwed 2 drafts.

    Drink the kool aid people……

If you sit back and look at all the moves Walsh has made he actually has just been going side ways.

If Lebron does not sign we are nowhere as usual.

  • giantg

How could Sergio not be a huge improvement vs Duhon (fg% .345 3pt% .323 ft% .711, no defense, can’t finish, plays scared)? If Sergio can push the ball and not implode under the pressure D’Antoni can run his transition offense. That alone will be a minor victory.

  • gdaibes

i dont think putting on muscle is what gallo needs to work on. He’s already a pretty solid dude. He’s more muscular than dirk, gasol, and bosh… 3 of the best 4′s in the game right now. He needs to work on his back to the basket game. I agree that the best way to use gallo is at the 4. he needs to be molded to play dirk’s game. back to the basket fade-aways.

right now gallos game is all about set shots and awkwardly taking people off the dribble (i cringe every time, afraid hes gonna hurt himself). dirk used to love the 3 ball when he first came in. now he uses his size and shooting skill to be a mid range monster.

gallo has the same two feature attributes. he’s got size and shooting skill. plus i think he has better defensive instincts than dirk.

this offseason gallo should be working on his back to the basket mid-range game.

  • Jankees27

so are the new guys playing tomorrow? i have tickets im kinda holding out

  • bigknicka

I honestly believe the bobcats might come into the playoffs the most dangerous team nobody is talking about with addition of tyrus Thomas

  • bigknicka

Yup I just bought some tickets on stubhub!!!

  • BluEandOrange

Jamison is now 0-11, the Cavaliers are down by 18 to the Bobcats, and Antawn has 4 blocks against. He missed all the shots he took and got REJECTED on 4 of them. That is crazy.

    LeBron come to NY!

  • Knicks4life

Plus Larry Brown can coach his ass off.

When he is not in NY of course.

  • gdaibes

I was procrastinating writing a paper last night and did these just kinda messing around… Except today after I heard McGradys quotes i replaced Roger Mason with him in the 1st and 3rd scenario. Any thoughts?

  • Knicks4life

S Rod is better than Duhon but I’ don’t think he is a starting NBA PG either.

Now I went crazy when we gave Duhon that contract because I had been following him since college, but Sergio at his price is a good deal.

    I would just measure expectations.

  • josh h

I will go on record saying that I would rather a Ham Sandwich be our PG than Duhon. At least the Ham Sandwich brings character and tries.

  • josh h

Duhon= not a starting PG either

  • bigknicka

Nobody could coach those teams isiah an layden put together, but the bobcats have someone that’s strong defensively at every position so I wouldn’t be surprised if they pull a golden state (07 against the mavs) this year in the 1st round

  • francoblanco

Yeah I’ve seen a lot of glowing on the blog lately about sergio’s arrival. I’m aware of his style of play and its really nothing to rave about but I guess watching duhon play for the past 2 years would make anyone excited about any other point gaurd stepping in……..I guess the one positive that sticks out is that he really pushes the ball up the court and increases the tempo, other than that……..he needs a lot of work to be a solid pg in the future…….he’s been a 3rd string pg on 2 different teams for a reason

  • francoblanco

And btw, am I the only one concerned about the offensive chemistry going forward?…..it can loom large if it seems like there aren’t enough shots to go around for players to get into a rhythm or get the ball at the right spots. For starters we have david lee who figures himself to be the second coming of Kevin McHale since the offense has been running through him for a majority of the season,……then we have wilson chandler who has been stepping up big and proving his worth with the ball in his hands…..as well as gallo who still needs to get his shots and develop some sense of offense within the arc……and now we have t mac who we will count on to be t mac….period…….and I did I forget to mention al harrington?…..i don’t think I need to explain the issue there regarding that guy. I like the mcgrady trade regardless, but it would have been even more sweet if we were able to get rid of harrington for a less ball dominant big man who plays defense and can clog the middle.

  • ds2488

Yeah I agree with that and maybe Gallo just hasn’t filled out yet in his body, because while he is muscular he does not have enough bulk. We have all seen him fly 20 yards back in what doesn’t look like a flop when a small guard runs into him. I feel like if he was put at the 4 now people would just back him down and it would be tough. He needs to fill out some more and work on post moves, something he hasn’t had a chance to do the past 2 offseasons because of injury.

  • x-man

LOL It’s only his 1st game with a new team. Jamison is probably exicited and scared as heck going to a real contender. I imagine N8 will be just as scared being in a similar situation with the Celtics.

They both will settle down before playoffs time and contribute to their respective teams.

We still have Duhon and you can list those stats for Duhon each night. lol

We better not hope the the nets don’t put their old GM and now President Thorn on the hunt to get Lebron. Thorn is the real deal. Also LBJ with Lopez and the talent on the Nets would work. However, let’s hope he doesn’t care for Newark!

  • josh108

I’m not the biggest fan of Donnie walsh and personally I hate dantonis style of basketbLl but u really just bitch and find the negative in every single thread on this blog, I try not to read your comments now!

  • x-man

    Hey Tommy,

I like how you stated you like agressiveness! Have you watched Duhon play lately? lol

Have you watched our defense most of the year?

Guess who’s going back to the dog house? Don’t worry, I’ll Hollar!

  • x-man

lol “Lee the second coming of McHale?” The only thing they both have in common is they’re both white. McHale was one of the best power forwards to EVER play the game period. I know because I lost a lot of money screaming as the TV for the refs to call him traveling when in fact he just had good foot work. McHale also played defense.

So far, Lee is the 2nd coming of Zach Randolf.

  • josh108

u act like none of us knicks fans know the risk that came along with the trade for tmac…everyone knows and fully understands the potential fail walsh faces with his moves of late, personally i one hundred percent agree with the deadline moves. Im sick of reading comments with all this bs about the potential risks…no shit theres risks thats exactly why the trade was risky and questionable!

  • josh108

i agree tommy, i like the risk taking…

the potential reward is far to great to not pull the trigger…

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

    if t-mac averages
    anything like 18-25
4-7 assist with a block an steal the knicks might make the playoffs or miss it by 1 game or the 8seed owned the tie breaker..

  • francoblanco

X man, I was hoping you would sense the sarcasm lol……..the point I was making is that lee is feeling the urge to 20 shots a game nowadays……he does make most of them so I can’t really bash him for that but it doesn’t and probably never will sit well with me that he has been our “offensive threat”

  • DaGawD_KnowLedge

    now your dissing z-bo
    lol

  • x-man

lol. I knew you would call me on the carpet for that one! lol

  • x-man

lol good one! If Lee would play defense he would be a real keeper. I ain’t hating on Lee for improving his offense but he’s a total dog on defense.

  • http://www.raafatrola.com raafatrola

I dont agree with the point calculated gamble in the video….a gamble cant be calculated…its just a gamble..it may be share market or any other game…

  • DeBusscherescorner

Agree, Tommy. Back in ’05 we were dealing with an unknown commodity in Curry. Curry showed flashes in ’06 with the Knicks, nearly becoming an All-star, but simmered since then. flash forward to a few days ago, we give away a few picks, but only this time we have something to look forward to and that’s the summer of ’10. If there were no ’10 FA class then i would understand, but you have ’10, ’11and or cap room(just in case we come up short and there’s money to be had) to solitify the team. With proper management we could use the cap and guys like Duhon, Lee(?), Harrington, to get a pick here and there back. there is a derth of talent depth to choose from and some of that , youth and talent could be bought for a good price. Not to say the draft-picks are not that important, but with guys like Hill, Douglass and Landry not getting any burn, what do think would happen to those rookies in two to three years if we have a good rotation of players from FA?

One thing that I like about the aqcuisitions is that they some soul to them–From Walker, Sergio, House, Giddens, and McGrady, each one of them have their own personality. Walker is talented and is very confident in himself, so is Sergio, Giddens, who has said he can make an impact if he gets the opportunity, House a champion, dangerous shooter has been a few mix ups and wears his heart on his jersey and Mac who is an seven time all-star, confident and has something to proves, just like House has gotten into a few fights–they all show a pulse. So that’s a +4 for me.

And on more thing, Tmac looked as though he lost alot of weight in that interview. His face look like the McGrady of ’02. Let’s hope his game and body looks the same.

  • k-hodge

Actually, Gallo needs to work on that lower body. Strengthen his legs. He seems to get tired in games and doesn’t get any lift in his jumper. If he strengthens his base, he’ll be able to be stronger throughout the game and also be able to take a little more pounding down low
