Meet the New Knicks

by Tommy Dee on February 19th, 2010 at 10:09 am

Click here for my interview with WFAN’s Richard Neer from last night.

Tracy McGrady
Tommy says- I can’t wait to see what he has left. This could be the start of a beautiful relationship. McGrady will have to opportunity to prove his worth in the Big Apple.

Sergio Rodriguez
A playmaking guard who doesn’t shoot well. Is he an upgrade or a piece moving forward? We’ll see.

Eddie House
A D’Antoni player, let’s see if House is the scoring piece that he was in Phoenix and Boston. If so, he may be here moving forward.

Bill Walker
Could be a huge sleeper. Once a can’t miss high school player and Michael Beasley’s running mate at Kansas State, Walker hasn’t had much of an impact in the NBA. A great talent, who has struggled with injuries We’ll see if he gets the chance to play, I’d think so. Walker doesn’t mind voicing his opinion…

J.R. Giddens
Giddens just had knee surgery and will be out. Doubtful he’ll wear a Knicks uniform but we will see.

  • traps9

OMG that Eddie House mix had me DYIN man lol

  • TG

That Srod vid is hilarious. He kept his cool.

  • ds2488

That Sergio video was awesome. haha.

  • DS

Still don’t see how he can sign a roster of 12 players if we sign two max players…if we have 32 mil in cap space and each max deal is 16 mil…how can we have a roster of more than gallo, chandler, douglas, curry, max#1, max#2.

Where are the other 6 players needed to reach the mandate of 12 players coming from without any cap space left??

  • BobbyFromBK

Sergio will be starting by the Milwaukee game on Monday. Duhon’s days are numbered…

Finally we have a real point guard!

  • TobyKnight

I’ve been asking myself the same question

  • josh108

Anyone know when the tmac press conference is, will it be on sny or MSG?

  • flanz0

When you calculate the salary cap, you use things called cap holds. Basically, you can’t count your salary cap space without factoring in salary (I think it’s the veteran minimum, but not sure) for all 12 roster spots. So that $32-35 million in cap space is after you add up the four salaried players on the roster (Curry, Gallo, Chandler, Douglas) and then the 8 cap holds.

  • TobyKnight

    Excellent.
    Thanks.

  • oscar f

I been wondering the same ; when is the press conference?

great interviews on WFAN with Donnie and Peter Vecey (who I hate):

Firstly, It was interesting that Donnie said that when he made the Crawford Z-bo trade he thought the cap would be about 63 mil this summer. When he found out that it could be up to 10 mil less, it must have been a punch in the gut. This explains why he allowed the Houston GM to pretty much take his lunch money.

Secondly, i hate to say it, but I agree with Vecey on two points:
    A) Just getting Joe J and Amare this summer is a failure. It makes the knicks a yearly 4 seed at best.
    B) If Donnie did this deal without some inside knowledge that LBJ is very likely to come here, then this is an absolute blunder. He is going all in blind basically.

You can hear the interviews on WFAN.com

  • danny7434

I couldn’t disagree with that moron Peter Vescey more. He said that if the Knicks end up getting Joe Johnson and Bosh it’s a failure. That is ridiculous. Obviously LBJ is the main target but if he doesn’t come, and I don’t think he will, I would love it if we got JJ and Bosh. I would rather have JJ over Dwade to be honest. He is more durable and he is a sick player. I don’t know why he is so overlooked. I would sign up for that today if it was certain LBJ is not coming here.

  • italian stallion

Exactly ! Guys like Joe Johnson, Rudy Gay, and Amare are overrated by the general public because they can score. But they aren’t particularly good at anything else. Other than Amare, they aren’t even really efficient scorers. If we wind up with two guys like that, this trade is a monumental bust because we won’t even be close to being a major contender and we will probably have to overpay to get them. We will sort of be in the same position as Dumars was last year. He had a ton of space and felt compelled to use it. So he overpaid for decent but not spectacular free agents and the Pistons still suck and are hamstringed for years. It’s James, Wade, Bosh or disaster.

  • starksoakmase

I hate Vecsey too, but he didn’t say Joe and Bosh is a failure, he said Joe and Amare is a failure, which i agree with. Do you?

i would sign up for any One of LBJ, Wade or Bosh. Preferably 2, but I don’t know how we fill out a roster after that.

If you get any of those three, Donnie did his job and can use the rest to get a very good #2. I rather not overpay for Gay or Lee though. They are good for about 9 mil per.

  • bob go knicks

    What was your answer?

  • HaS

    those 2nd rounders?

  • bob go knicks

Joe Johnson is a very good passer and rebounder and can play Defense beside his scoring.Check out his stats.he is one of the best all around players in the NBA.

  • bob go knicks

last year he had 6 asst.per game as a 2 guard

  • x-man

Yeah but if we get 2 Superstars in the off season, they better be prepared to play 60 minutes each game because our bench is non-existent.

By game 50, we’ll have to take them to the barn and shoot them! Rings are won with starts for sure but with a good supporting cast too!

Our supporting cast is starting at best! Just saying!

  • Marzak

I think what Vecsey means is if we don’t sign Lebron or Wade we would have to give Amare, Johnson or Bosh max contracts and they are not max players. If we don’t give them max deals why would they sign with us when they can get max money from their current teams or the other teams with major cap space.

There are only a few max players in the NBA today Kobe, Lebron, Wade and possibly Melo, Paul and Howard soon. Duncan in his prime of course and a 100% healthy Yao maybe because his appeal goes beyond basketball.

  • x-man

Come on, Getting Joe J only would be a great accomplishment now? Yikes When did Joe J become a team changer? This is not mighty Joe Young we’re talking about. Joe J is a complimentary player not a Super star!

I’m sure Kobe, LBJ, and etc is losing a lot of sleep over Joe J taking a ring from them.

  • boomshanka

Bosh is an excellent ball player but can’t turn a loser into a winner on his own. It’s not as if Toronto has been all that good until very very recently. Wade can do it with an all-star sidekick and good 3rd; Lebron is the only one who can make a 20+ win difference.

  • DinnerDog

What are you talking about? Joe Johnson is a really good defender, passer and rebounder. How many other basketball skills are there? He’s a shooting guard that averages 4.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and a steal a game while consistently guarding the other team’s best wing (on top of his 21 points a game).

  • x-man

Yep, without one of those players, we would need about 3-4 of the best second tied players to have a chance being a factor.

Now comes the reality what many teams have learned. Having a lot of cap space can equal having a lot of championship trophy space. With what we have now, Walsh has his work cut out for him to build a very good team.

  • x-man

Now add up the rings Joe J has, multiply that by the # of conference finals he has been in then raise that to the power of the number of championship series he has been in.

    What ya got?

  • starksoakmase

I consider Bosh a max guy. He is an all-around player and a leader.
I wouldn’t mind giving Bosh the max and giving Joe J. 13-14 mil per. If his deal is backloaded, then the knicks will have some money to spend on other guys.

  • BroadwayBullies
  • oscar f

Bosh alone might not be a threat to kobe and Lebron and Joe J is not either but on the same team they will be formidable and you can build around them and Gallo and Will. After kobe and Wade who is a better SG than Joe? Keep in mind that he destroted D-Wade in the playoffs last year and eliminated his team. Bosh is top 5 in PF and is very young and still getting stronger and better. He put on 30lbs and his numbers look better this year. That combo aint half bad especially on the knicks where they can do with curry what the Cavs did with Big- Z who got them Jamison. Aslo every year they can add on better complements with the MLE . As I said before the knicks future looks bright.

  • x-man

I truly hear ya and our GM has his work cut out for him. We need a lot for this team to be really contenders.

I truly wish this GM well because he has a daunting task! The expectation of the city is now bestowed on this guy and he has never got it done anywhere before to what we expect from him.

  • oscar f

Also if Lebron stays he will be on an aging team whereas the knicks could have youth to build and compete with a possible tandem of Gallo,Bosh,Joe j, Chandler, and s-rod to build around.I think Lebron would wish he would have left if he stays. I also strongly believe that even with Jamison they will lose if thay get the Bobcats in the first round.

  • x-man

Please take some time and add up all the things this team needs to contend. Teams that contend not only have superstars, they have good complimentary players and a bench.

Yes, with salary cap space, we have some hope the same way teams such as the Clippers and the Bulls had for many years after the Jordan era. So list out our roster now and see the holes!

  • NYKat

J.J and bosh is not a failure…a failure has been the Knicks this past decade. Donnie gets J.J. and Bosh then he did what he was supposed to do, make this team a winner.

Donnie gets Lebron, then he’s one of the best GM’s in franchise history considering where he’s coming from…which says a lot about how I feel about our chances of getting King James to leave Cleveland to come to NY.

  • oscar f

So you feel the knicks are worst off.lol we stiil have draft picks and the coach uses a 8 man rotation.

  • x-man

I hear ya and that’s a start for sure but the GM has to surround these stars with other pieces or good players too. How many times have we heard the saying that if Ewing had a better supporting cast, he would have had a ring or rings, yada yada.

To sell tickets and bring in celebrities, then getting a LBJ alone is suffice and I would give our GM kudos.

However, I’m looking for the GM to bring about a contending TEAM with a good chance to succeed. Nothing is guaranteed and I don’t expect the GM to do that.

  • x-man

No, It’s true I don’t care much for this coach because I’ve seen enough of his antics already.

Yet, there is still much work to do to bring about a winning team. That is why I’m so repetitive about developing the youths such as Gallo, Chandler and etc. We will need these players to compliment any stars we bring on board. Remember, we have no real size int he middle. We have no center.

Name one real contending team without a legit center?

Well we have no legit power forward either! We have 1 shooting guard. We need a lot buddy!

  • DinnerDog

The same number as Chris Bosh. Not much worse than Chris Paul or Carmello Anthony either. These guys can’t help who they play with. Plus, the Hawks could be the 3 seed this year if Boston continues to be mediocre.

  • oscar f

Actually if you get Lebron The knicks have a lot of Versataile players.
    PG S-rod
    Sg Chandler
    SF Gallo
    PF Lebron
    C Bosh
    Bench
curry(can be traded for 2 players)
    2nd round pick
    TD
    2nd round pick
    Veteran minnimum player
    2d-league players .
The knicks might not win a chip but they can buid from there with the MLE. Keep in mind Lebron would be a PF in this system like the way Marion was.

  • oscar f

If the knicks dont get LBJ the team would still look like :
    PG S-rod
    SG Joe J
    SF Gallo
    PF Bosh
C Okafur(by trade dump with Eddy Curry’s contract and TD)
    bench
    Chandler
    2nd round pick
    2nd round pick
    Bender
    Veteran min player
    2 D-League players

  • Marzak

It’ll be about leverage in some cases. If we strike out on Lebron and Wade then Johnson knows we need him so it would be tough to make him take 13-14 mil when Atlanta can give him the max and they’re a better team because they have Horford, Smith and Bibby.

  • Marzak

I sometimes hear this Lebron at PF thing and I wonder why would he want to come here and have to guard Elton Brand, KG, Duncan, Gasol, Amare, Boozer and Jefferson in the post every night. I also don’t want to see Chandler guarding 4′s either. I think Lebron wants to play the 4 as much as Jordan wanted to run the point for the Bulls chasing little guys for 40 minutes for four quarters. I don’t think primary ball handlers can play the 4 exclusively.

  • Marzak

I have no problem with JJ and Bosh as long as they don’t get max $$. Max $$ changes the whole game, when you get that kind of money you’re expected to take it to a higher level. Everybody loved Allen Houston until he got 100 mil and people expected more than just a jump shooter with no defense. He became overpaid real fast.

  • HaS

    Can we sign Anthony Johnson?

  • bob go knicks

because he doesnt have a ring ,hes not a great player?

  • HaS

Ok let’s sip a little bit of kool-aid for a minute fellas.

Let’s imagine the Knicks AREN’T cursed for once and T-Mac regains his explosiveness after this micro-fracture surgery (remember when ACL surgery was a professional athlete’s death sentence?) and becomes at least 90% the player he was before, add Joe Johnson (probably the most available of all the FA’s out there) then bring in native New Yorker Brendan Haywood that would be an interesting lineup, not a championship lineup, but a competitive lineup. The Knicks would then still need to be lucky enough to fleece a GM somewhere a la a Pau or Garnett trade to add to those stars (T-Mac, Joe Johnson).

Joe Johnson and T-Mac are just as much “stars” as Paul Pierce was before he was teamed with Garnett and Ray Allen. That team didn’t have a good point guard either, but they got lucky with Rondo becoming an All-Star in his own right,

    *sobers up from Kool-aid inebriation*

I’m still not comfortable trading all those picks and I still feel it’s LeBron or bust. Stop saying Donnie has balls, he just doesn’t care enough to be scared. He’s old, this is his last job before he collects his pension and he has no legacy to speak of or tarnish.

  • HaS

    “Yikes” as x-man would say.

I’m sorry Donnie (if you’re reading this) that was a tad harsh.

  • gohard83

Im gonna say this do people forge if we get bosh and JJ we still have chandler who to me is very under rated. then even if gallo is a one trick pony teams will have a real problem with them cause both he and jj will spread the d.

  • gohard83

Your putting Gallo ahead of Chandler LOL. Chandler would be a better 4 than Gallo even if he is shorter.

  • gohard83

    I agree

  • HaS

Chandler is definitely a more complete player than Gallinari at this point. He would be better served as a PF down the line anyway.

  • HaS

Exactly the reason why _avi_ shouldn’t get 10-12 mil per anything above 8 to 9 (average) is way too much for a player who is only active on 47′ of the basketball floor at the time.
