Game Thread: Knicks at Blazers

by Tommy Dee on March 31st, 2010 at 9:04 pm

I’m interested in seeing Marcus Camby and Frank Isola offers this:

“…It is already being speculated that Camby will return to the Clippers. But Camby enjoyed his time in New York and may want to give the Knicks another chance…”

Camby is a no brainer to add to a star player. But at 35 36, i wonder about his shelf life. He’s not the same high-flier Knick fans remember. He’s a defensive specialist, and may be the best, who can knock down the open jumper. He still has some spring, but is clearly a great defensive presence.

How much is that worth? We’ll find out this summer.

Harrington in Pain, Wants to Win

by Tommy Dee on March 31st, 2010 at 9:30 am

We there were over 1,000 responses to the question: If the money were right would you bring back Al Harrington. And the results were pretty close.

Via Daily News-

“…Harrington still maintains that his preference is to re-sign with the Knicks. The New Jersey product is close to team president Donnie Walsh and wants to experience at least one winning season with the Knicks. But Harrington, who will become a free agent this summer, is also realistic about his future in New York.

Mike D’Antoni has never been a big fan of his, and with the Knicks clearing cap space to make a run at LeBron James among others, Harrington would have to take a substantial pay cut in order to return.

“Hopefully, New York will look my way first,” Harrington says. “I need you to all go in the papers and say ‘Bring Al Back.’ I’ll be a ball-mover, promise.”

The biggest knock on Harrington is that the ball stops in his hands and he shoots. I’d be interested to hear how many shots of Al’s are considered bad shots. Say what you want, he’s not shooting 35% from the field, he’s closer to 45%, and he’s made 434 field goals. He’s also canned 133 three pointers. That’s a lot of made baskets. Sounds like the perfect 6 man to me on a pretty good team.

Harrington has been linked to several teams including the Nets and Bulls. He’s a scorer who I thought was actually a better defender. I think it’s pretty clear that the man has been playing hurt for the last 2 months.

But where does that leave him? There isn’t much room here, unless things really don’t go right for the Knicks this summer, so it seems that he is a major backup plan. The team has to renounce him. I think that Harrington has a knack for scoring, but the price has to be right considering that Wilson Chandler and Daniloo Gallinari are probably now ahead of him on the depth chart.

Walsh: “I don’t want to put us back in the same Position”

by Tommy Dee on March 30th, 2010 at 4:00 pm

We’ll have Brandon Tierney on tonight to discuss his latest interview with Donnie Walsh, but here’s an interesting pull quote courtesy of Big C.

“…Well I think I have got to make that decision when I get there, but I am just giving you kind of philosophically, I don’t want to put us back in the same position… I think that from here on out it is going to cap management for every team in the league and we have got to be a part of that. In other words, we have got to approach those things in that way…”

It’s always been obvious that part one of the 2010 plan is to be able to sit down and talk to Lebron and Wade. Those are instant championship players. I’m still, nor will I be, sold on the concept that either would spurn NY because of the current talent. Add a few more pieces under the cap, which is certainly viable, and you have a title contender. Period.

The idea that Lebron would leave Cleveland because of what they have existing is fair, but not at the expense of what the Knicks don’t have. Lebron, I believe, is smart enough to realize that himself alone makes the team very good, and the following moves made vault them to the top of the East.

Wade is another story. The Heat can add talent with him as well.

Just last week Walsh said that he wouldn’t overspend. The above quote is about cap management. Either way the team will have a much more competitive team next season.

Time to Move On?

by Tommy Dee on March 30th, 2010 at 2:39 pm

What do the Knicks do with Eddy Curry?

He’s not going to retire, he’s not opting out, and the Knicks don’t have much of a case from a medical or disability standpoint. Even if they did, who knows how long that would take.

I posed the question to cap-guru extraordinaire Larry Coon on Twitter, and his response was simple.

“…Curry would have to give up salary — why would he do that?..”

But what can they do with him is the question. He’s a valuable contract who just gets more valuable as next season goes on. So does a team jump at the chance now to deal for a guy who won’t help them, all the while giving up existing talent? I can’t see that happening. Do the Knicks package Curry with another player this offseason to gain even more cap space?

I believe that would be the play worth pursuing aggressively.

Any way you slice it, they’ve tried for two years to implement him, raise his value and ship him out. He is, fairly or unfairly, the last link to the Isiah Era.

If I’m Donnie Walsh, I look for the best deal to include Curry in, but that’s difficult to do considering he may be able to hold on to him and move him for more value next season. In other words, trade Chandler, Gallo or TD with Curry this off season, or wait until next when his contract is more valuable because the Knicks already paid some/most of it.

What would you do with Eddy Curry if you were Donnie Walsh?

What would you do?

Is Boozer in the Mix?

by Tommy Dee on March 30th, 2010 at 12:05 pm

It’s a loaded question. He’s a former Olympian who raves about Mike D’Antoni. He’s also a player who seemingly is pining for one last big contract. He’s also recently said that he now wants to stay Utah after almost being traded what seems like 10 times.

What is his value? Where is he in comparison to the likes of Amar’e Stoudemire and Chris Bosh? And, of course, David Lee.

Boozer, to me, plays as big as 6’9, yet seems shorter. He’s a solid face up, back-to-the-rim player who gets you 20 and 10…along with wins. The Jazz have a strong nucleus when you consider Deron Williams, hence why they have made consistent playoff appearances, and Jerry Sloan deserves great credit as well.

Is he a pick and roll player in this system? I believe he can be. And he’s an outstanding post defender.

But how much is that worth? You’d have to imagine it would be in the ballpark of a max, but one has to wonder if he, like Joe Johnson, would take less to play with a star.

Interesting that Yao Ming has discussed free agency, but for know we’ll limit it to the big 4.

I wonder where Boozer Ranks among the free agent forwards, if all the money were relative.

Who is the best front court player of the free agent group

Billups Offers Douglas Advice, Encouragement

by Ben Kopelman on March 30th, 2010 at 9:55 am

this little tidbit passed me by the other day, but I thought it was still worth sharing today…

Accoridng to the team’s official website,  Chauncey Billups had a few words of encouragement for Toney Douglas when the Nuggets were in town last week.

“Toney Douglas has already received some valuable advice from his veteran teammates and NFL brother throughout his rookie season with the Knicks. But what he probably never would have expected was getting some tips from an opposing player during last week’s victory over the Denver Nuggets.

“All-Star point guard Chauncey Billups pointed out mistakes made by Douglas and told him things he could improve on as the two were matched up against each other. It was the latest sign that Douglas is earning respect from some of the best players in the game with his impressive play recently.

“He was in the same position I was in when he was a rookie,” Douglas told MSG. “So he was just helping me out.”

It’s nice to see that TD is being treated with some respect on the court.  This is not to say that Billups is an up and coming mentor, but rookies do not necessarily get the benefit of the doubt from visiting veterans, so it’s great to see that TD is held in high enough regard.

To me, this means Douglas carries himself well and gives off a vibe of knowing where he is in this league and respecting those who have come before him.  Given Billups’ career, I can;’t imagine him offering friendly words of advice to anybody who he felt might not know his role.

Too bad Dino didn’t make any mistakes for Melo to correct him on after that game…

Boozer: D’Antoni is “Dope”

by Tommy Dee on March 30th, 2010 at 8:30 am

As opposed to “a dope.”

Someone being “dope” it means that they are cool or have cool-like qualities for those not familiar with 90s slang.

Via Daily News

“…”Love’em,” Boozer, wearing a Yankees cap, said of the Knicks. “D’Antoni is dope. Having spent time with him at the Olympics … his offensive mind-set is unbelievable. He’s got the best plays I’ve ever been around. On a whim. It’s like rappers. They come off the top of their domes with (lyrics). He has plays in the back of his head he just comes up with at that moment.

“D’Antoni’s a great coach. I know they have an incredible organization. They’ve got a lot of talent.”

That may be overstating a bit. The Knicks were eliminated from playoff contention before they even took the court last night when the Raptors won. They then came out and gave up 44 first-quarter points, including 14 to Deron Williams…”

Boozer is an intriguing player. Someone whom I also consider a second tier player. For some reason he always looks like he’s 6’7, but plays much bigger.
