Winning Time

by Tommy Dee on March 14th, 2010 at 6:54 pm

Premiere is tonight on ESPN at 9pm.

  • BiggieSmalls

cant wait to relive the night mares.

  • LBJ2010

Reggie was a Knick killer, no doubt, but I believe the 90s playoff series was a 3-3 split between us and the Pacers. We still beat him half the time.

  • Lebris Jamosh aka ridiculous upside

It was 3-2 knicks. Oh man I miss those series. Much better quality ball than the Miami series.

  • Lebris Jamosh aka ridiculous upside

Oops my bad. 3-3 I forgot about ’98.

  • LBJ2010

Right. I added in the ’00 series.

  • BiggieSmalls

i cant look at it that rationally.. some of those beats were horrendously deflating..

I just hope this isnt a Donnie Walsh hand job.. I suspect it will be.

Let’s see if Klores mentions that Steve Alford didnt get drafted til the second round.

  • onemoretime

It’s revisionist history if you ask me. Sure Miller had some epic game against the Knicks in the 90s but it isn’t like he terrorized them. The Knicks gave as good as they got. His signature 50pt game was spectacular but what some don’t remember is that the Knicks won that series and Miller missed a big shot after the Ewing dunk in game 7 to give the Knicks the series and a trip to the NBA finals. Where was he game 6 of that series when the Knicks went down to Indiana and beat the Pacers in a do or die game on Reggies’ homecourt?

  • Lebris Jamosh aka ridiculous upside

It’s short changing what it was really about, which was a great rivalry b/w 2 teams. It wasn’t Reggie vs the Knicks as much as the Pacers (Reggie, Davis bros, Smits, Jackson, etc) vs NY.

That said, I’m looking forward to this. I haven’t really watched the other 30 for 30 docs but this one is supposed to be the tremendous (got nominated at Sundance).

Also, I think Klores will be part of the 2010 FA recruitment. He’s a big shot pr guy and close friends with Walsh. Ey, whatever helps.

  • ds2488

wow. This is tough to watch at times. I never really remembered the giant choke job in game 1, it was more just Reggie going nuts. But damn, what a horrific incredible choke job. I mean Starks missed free throws, Patrick getting the rebound and then quickly throwing up a shot when he should have just held for the last one, the ridiculous inbounds by Mase where Anthony was fouled and Mase did the last thing he should have done which is throw it right to Reggie. Its crazy, what an amazing choke job.

  • Knicks4life

I wasn’t going to watch. I have enough pain watching the current Knicks every game.

But just like with these Knicks I forced myself to rewatch every painful moment including the missed finger roll.

I feel like I am in an abusive relationship. My love for the Knicks is borderline irrational.

I feel like Al Bundy. I know I am going to die of a massive heart attack the day before the Knicks win game 7 of the NBA finals.

Its the way it has to be.

  • Lebris Jamosh aka ridiculous upside

I remember every moment of that. Ughhh!!

And you forgot Mase fouling Miller for the go ahead free throws. What the hell was that?? That’s worse than Charles Smith missing 4 layups against the Bulls.

  • http://tharealestproductionz.blogspot.com/ DaGawD_KnowLedge

    knicks and bulls
    knicks an pacers

    those were the best series

  • Lebris Jamosh aka ridiculous upside

We were going to win something. Either the game or the fight.
    ~Greg Antony

LOL the 90s knicks were great even if didn’t win it all. Forget championship…I just want to see playoff games at the garden again.

  • BiggieSmalls

trading Marc Jackson was a huge mistake by Riley..

I loved Derrik Harper but Action Jackson was NYC.

  • http://tharealestproductionz.blogspot.com/ DaGawD_KnowLedge

the knicks will win it all when they get a real coach an a young smart g.m

  • Hydr0

knicks v heat was pretty good too

  • http://tharealestproductionz.blogspot.com/ DaGawD_KnowLedge

man the knicks had rod strick an mark jax an traded both
    that was bad

  • http://tharealestproductionz.blogspot.com/ DaGawD_KnowLedge

    yup to end the 90′s

  • ds2488

true. i didn’t even mention that because i was getting sick enough as it is talking about all the other brain farts. Crazy. Anyone who doesn’t believe we are cursed needs to watch this.

  • Knicks4life

Mark Jackson didn’t play defense (at least back then) which was the staple of Riley’s Knicks.

I agreed with the decision (even though it came back to bite us).

  • gohard83

I love that line best line of the show. After watching that I do kind of believe Walsh can turn us around. Everyone second guessed him with rick smitts and Reggie Miller and I just think that we are doing the same thing with his decision to clear cap space

  • Knicks4life

    Knicks need players.

  • BrooklynsFinest1

Who wouldn’t trade the current team for the 90′s Knicks? For one we would have been like Boston when they won their title. A tough grind it out defensive team. I bet we would have been in the conversation for an NBA title if that team was playing now hands down. But to see the team that not only Knick fans but all of New York loved again does bring a tear to my eye. Especially when I don’t remember anybody having layup drills against us then while no its a normal thing.

  • BiggieSmalls

and I always hated Chaz Smith.. Always..

the piece wasnt the complete Donnie hand job that i thought it could be.. But Klores is a Donnie fan.. not a knicks fan.. he admitted as much in the Dee interview.

they did a quick flash to show Alford was the 26th pick.. (3rd in the second round) and I dont think that was such a huge part of the piece..

It was about Reggie and those series against us.. And even if the numbers may not show it Reggie was an assassin and got under OUR skin..

I was at those games and Reggie was hated just as much as Jordan.

  • BiggieSmalls

if I remember Riley didnt want to pay Jackson and had some problem with him — His defense wasnt great but he wasnt the quickest player

.. He thought he could get by at PG with Greg Anthony (who he just drafted) and the grizzled vet D Harper.. and wanted Chaz Smith for more size up front..

he got Doc Rivers in the deal and he was pretty much a washout.

But yeah.. I think there was more to the Riley/Jackson relationship than has been discussed..

Jackson had a great relationship with Ewing and that wasnt valued highly enough.

  • http://tharealestproductionz.blogspot.com/ DaGawD_KnowLedge

yea but that doesn’t matter when u got waldo as your coach

  • BiggieSmalls

You know what gets me mist about that time ? And it came out in the piece

that Indiana relied on two caRpetbagging new yorkers to achieve whatever success they had while their population denigrated us and hated us

amazing these two (brown and walsh) could stand looking in the mirror as new yorkers

it also makes me wish we would get a true New York coach in here and throw the west viginian back to his home town .. No shot on WV

  • http://tharealestproductionz.blogspot.com/ DaGawD_KnowLedge

    word
    his honky talk
    waldo mentality guy
    is really bad for nyc

  • Knicks4life

Just so I’m clear, in retrospect it was the wrong move . . .but at the time I agreed with the thinking behind it.

Harper was old but great. He also played in perfectly with the Knicks of that era. I still remember him sending Jo Jo English into the stands (costing us that series with the Bulls).

Its sad what Dolan has done to our Knicks. I wish Tommy would comment on that more.

  • Knicks4life

We did have a NY coach (Brown) and that didn’t work out too well.

We also have a NY Gm (Walsh) and . . .well the jury is still out on that one.

The Dolans F’d up by firing our very competent and capable front office from the 90′s and replacing them with Scott Layden and then Isiah Thomas.

    I hate the Dolans.

  • Knicks4life

Nice job DaGawd now we will have to listen to a lecture from Mucha on reverse racism and the evils of Ras Kass.

  • pak14life

“I think he’s way ahead of my curve,” Nowitzki said of Gallinari. “When I was 20, I was struggling so much. I watched a bunch of games this year, and he looks confident out there. He’s knocking big shots down for them. I think he worked on his drive some, he’s finishing in the paint some, and they’re looking for him to get big baskets. So, definitely ahead of me.”

check this article out Gallo haters.

  • BrooklynsFinest1

Pak14life Dirk ain’t someone that I would be so excited to get an endorsement from. Last I check Dirk hasn’t led his team to a championship nor put his team on his back. All he’s done is complain about coaches. If he was an unrestricted free agent I wouldn’t touch him with a 10 ft pole.

  • Namifi

Why would any real Knicks fan want to watch this? As much as we have dispatched Indiana in the playoffs and regular season, they make a film about his good shooting? This is the equivalent of ESPN making a film about John Starks dunk on Grant and Jordan or when Starks 3 ball was on vs the Bulls, Big deal; when you contrast the bigger picture, it puts the reality of the two rivals into perspective. If they want to make a film, make it about our 1999 run to the finals and how we were a huge underdog against Miami, and Indiana and we bumped them both; or a film called “Winning Time: How the Knicks stomped the Miami Heat into the ground in the playoffs even though Miami had a better regular season record most of the time”! How about “Winning Time: How the No. 8 seed Knicks eliminated the Pacers, when it was the year they were supposed to play for a championship”! That would make a good film! It seems everybody hates on the Knicks, Dam, for a team that is so sorry, people sure pay them a lot of attention!! Forget Reggie “Mr Potato Head” Miller! Knicks for life!!

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

Nothing to do with money…Jackson wasn;t a riley player and they had a need at SF. and they got Doc who made people forget about Jax real quick. That deal made them a better team. Sadly, Smith couldn’t finish.

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

just so we’re clear, reggie said every player on the team couldnt stand brown. But they believed.

No one bitched, they went out and played.their feelings for the coach meant nothing on the court.

  • Mucha

Dirk hasn’t led the Mavs to the NBA Finals?

The second option was Jason Terry.

No Shaquille O’Neal, no Kobe Bryant, no Paul Pierce, no Dwyane Wade… Jason Terry.

  • Mucha

    ???

  • TG

    LOL !

  • Knicks4life

Basketball, just like all professional sports, is about entertainment and Reggie at the Garden epitomized that.

If it was about the pure sport we wouldn’t have seats so close to the court or all those ridiculous gimmicks during the game (like artificial crowd noise) and star “calls” which cheapen the competitiveness of the game.

    Just sayin’.

  • Knicks4life

Dirk is a fantastic player. I don’t know what this guy is talking about.

The Knicks management would get on their hands and knees and thank the basketball gods if he came here.

  • Knicks4life

Figured his “honkey talk” line would enrage you the way Ras kas’ line about killing white people did. . . guess not.

  • BrooklynsFinest1

Mucha I guess you didn’t see how Dirk was missing in action while Wade singlehandlely destroyed the Mavs. Terry was the only reason it was even a series along with Josh Howard. Its so documented that Dirk said that he has to take a bigger role as leader of the team. He is the All Star but not the leader it don’t make sense.

  • Knicks4life

Actually, he said their hatred for the coach and his mantra to play the right way brought them together.

And, in fairness, Brown didn’t play favorites with the Pacers the way D’Antoni does with the Knicks. If you don’t play hard and play D Brown benched you.

I know it ate Brown up to have to give Iverson the star treatment in Phildelphia (even though he played hard game time his practice habits were disgusting).

  • ds2488

are you serious? Dirk is one of the greatest players of the past decade, no question about it. The guy will be a hall of famer, and I would think would be considered the greatest European player ever. Wow.

  • BrooklynsFinest1

Knicks4life so you think that Knick fans after these two years of tankin in the words of Biggie and except Dirk as the main man to lead our team? I can sure see the stars come out just to see Dirk play and all the fans wearing Nowitki jerseys. Think about what you saying and tell me how far are we gonna get with Dirk.

  • Namifi

True, but most people who are dedicated to any team take it with the same passion as the players. It’s entertainment for people who may not really support ant particular team or just like a player. I am entertained in the playoffs by teams that are not my team, so when they don’t do well I really don’t care, but dedicated sports fans commit to a team, that’s a bit more than entertainment.

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

I guess people can interpret things in other ways.

  • gohard83

Thats when Men played basketball and also put there egos aside and did what they had to do on the court. I dont agree with the coaches (Mike D.) moves all the time but at the end of the day its on the players to win or lose a game and Execute on offense and defense play with heart and determination not like all you care about is how many points you scored that night or if you gonna make ESPN on a highlight dunk. And it takes a team to win a championship so I say that I believe that Donnie will put a team on the floor if we just relax and let him do his job.

  • TG

Well, people don’t always perform in crunch time–that’s why sports are good drama. Charles Smith, or Starks 2-18, or Reggie’s 18 seconds.

Of course, sometimes you just don’t have a good match up, like when Hakeem made Shaq look like a confused child in the Orlando Houston finals.

  • Mucha

    lol

Dirk Nowitzki led the Mavericks to the NBA Finals and destroyed the great San Antonio Spurs.

    Dirk’s resume = LeBron’s resume right now.

  • Mucha

Nowitzki didn’t play particularly well during the Finals.

He still played better than LeBron LOL.

Dwight Howard didn’t look like a beast against the Lakers either.

  • Mucha

    Hahaha…

At the end of the day – he’s still “DaGawd”. I can’t front.

    That’s real talk.

  • josh108

hahaha, i was laughing when he said that!

i want the knicks to go back to the “ill F”CK u up” mode again. Im sick of this P”ussy shit dantoni brings with him. Im sorry, im a die hard knicks fan and i always hear “the game is changing” n all this bs, point blank, the knicks made the finals in 94 and 99, both of those teams were defensive. gritty, in your face teams…reguardless if the games changing or not, defense wins and mike doesnt value the d at all…

all the great teams of this so called “new style” of basketball were and currently are great defensive teams…the spurs, celtics, lakers, cavs, the old detroit teams of 04, etc…even the nets when they made the finals played great defense. I actually rcall k mart gettin in tim thomas’ face n makin the whole knicks team look like a bunch of clowns!

  • http://tharealestproductionz.blogspot.com/ DaGawD_KnowLedge

    lmao
    yo k4l funny dude
    an mucha..

  • BrooklynsFinest1

Mucha who is the better player and who Knick fans want? Last time I checked Dirk don’t have no endorsments and I don’t remember him on espn not too much. This is a star driven league and Lebron took the Cavs a team with less talent then that Mavs team to the NBA finals and tried his best to win it when he was basically on his own. So let’s ask all Knick fans if they had a choice between Dirk and Lebron who would they want?

  • http://tharealestproductionz.blogspot.com/ DaGawD_KnowLedge

the new era is soft in general man
    music movies etc.

i’m a 70′s baby an i grew up in the streets
    in other words if u won’t tough i wasn’t f-ing with u.

i loved old school b-ball an the 90′s knicks were as tough as nails.

the nba doesn’t wan that kinda toughness anymore
they want lil wayne drake toughness-lmao..

  • jrjbertsch

It may be the players, who put the ball in the hoop, but is the front office that puts the players on the floor. This offseason is gonna be big. If they have any brains in the front office, they realize a few things:

James is not locked into Cleveland. He wants to create a basketball dynasty that will give him at least 7 NBA titles. It follows that if the Knicks want James, they must create a dynasty situation.

Forget the money, design a dream team on paper. Then get creative with the financing. James-Wade-Bosh all share the same sports agency. If the big three see something powerful in the making they just might make the numbers work.

    Check out this article:
“LeBron James Has Hopes High in Cleveland: OMG Not Again!”

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/361893-lebron-has-hopes-high-in-cleveland-omg-not-again

  • Knicks4life

LBJ is much younger than Dirk and a better all around player, but then again LBJ is better than everybody. So yes of course Knick fans would want LBJ, that is a no brainer.

But you offer a false choice. Other than Kobe (banged up), LBJ, and Wade, Dirk is the best FA out there. Period. If people thought there was a realistic chance he would leave Dallas they would easily offer him a max contract.

The guy is one of the best PFs to ever play the game. You are right, he doesn’t really have any major endorsement deals, perhaps that could be our lure to get him to leave Dallas. But Nash didn’t really have any either but you certainely recoginize that he is one of the best PGs to every play the game . . .right?

  • Knicks4life

Hey I’m not against the coach (at least not yet) but I’m just calling a spade a spade. I’ll watch that piece again but I’m pretty sure those were Reggie’s words.

Good film. The Larry v. Magic piece was great.

  • Knicks4life

Us (fans) relaxing or not relaxing is not going to change anything or stop Donnie from doing his job this summer.

  • josh108

haha…i noticed ur name i meant to ask u, ur obviously a wu fan currect? i find the nation of gods and earths very interesting…

im pretty much as big of a wu fan as someone could be, n i also hate wayne, drake, all these clowns…wu and tribe for life!!!

-go knicks!! idc if its soft or badass i just want them to win again!!!

  • JLS125

I enjoyed seeing Oakley black out on the reporter who was to close to his locker. I also enjoyed the LJ, Sprewell, Camby NYK at the end of the show…

  • Mucha

Nowitzki had a better supporting cast than LeBron but he played in a tougher conference. Nowitzki almost singlehandedly beat the San Antonio Spurs and the Phoenix Suns. The Cavs beat the New Jersey Nets and the Detroit Pistons. Apples and oranges.

Obviously Knicks fans want LeBron James. Because he is the better/younger basketball player. But the notion that Nowitzki’s not a franchise player and never carried his team on his back is RIDICULOUS considering that – at this point in their careers – Nowitzki’s resume = LeBron’s resume (1 Finals appearance, 1 MVP award).

  • meithk728

Man, what a great time in Knicks history that was. Even the bad losses. We had a chance to win it every year. It really lets us know what we had with Patrick and I knew because I was a kid, I’m 29 now so I hadn’t been corrupted by the mets, jets, and islanders yet I was still an optimist. This documentary just made me realize how important LeBron is to the future of this organization. We were spoiled for a long time as knicks fans and we expect the best so Joe Johnson and Chris Bosh just won’t cut it after 9 miserable years. We need LeBron and If David “no defense” lee is back I will be 10 times more digusted with this organization than I was with Isaiah. David Lee is awful and for the Lee lovers out there : you must be missing the games or you missed the 90′s. We ned Ewings, Oakleys, Starks, Davis’s, Mason’s, Harpers, Cambys, LJ’s, Sprewells. Players with Balls – Like LeBron.

  • x-man

Aaaah Tommy Dee! Why must you be sooo in luv? This is NO teenager crush you have playa!

You’re now looking thru the garbage cans for trinklets of your luv for this coach!

The day when Fans will revolt against this coach in unison is very near and you’ll be heartbroken with only your alter ego DVJ to share your sorrows with.

After Isiah, I would have thought you would have hidden your heart a little better or played hard to get. Who knew you were just a HO?

    I kid I kid!

Always fun teasing ya Tommy! You do make it soooo easy! One day you’re gonna wake up and thank many of us for trying to tell ya that you’re too good for this coach! He don’t deserve you! U can do better! lol

  • BiggieSmalls

One last thing to point out..

In the beginning Klores portrays himself as a “knicks fan from brooklyn” when he is actually a Donnie Walsh Fan.

This was brought out by Tommy in the interview..

Stellar job by Mr. Dee. exposing Klores’ agenda.

  • Mal

I love the no fratinizing(sp) rule, the enemy is the enemy. No one allow in the paint..dats the Knicks I remember. Ahh to have a legit 7footer who mattered. I was watching that and remembered the finger roll, it was like I was reliving the whole event even though I knew the outcome.

Uggg that 8points in that little time and JS missing free throws oh woe is me the pain, the pain

  • gohard83

But it was great to see Pat in a knicks Uni playing his heart out. and Oak and mase man I love the Line where Anthony says either we was gonna win the game or the fight LOL that shit was classic.
