Game Thread: Knicks at Sixers

by Tommy Dee on March 15th, 2010 at 6:15 pm

Tonight’s focus will shift to Philadelphia,  where the Sixers are in the midst of a horrendous season, they’ve won once in their last 11 tries, without the luxury of cap flexibility. So, in essence, the Sixers are the Knicks of the last decade.

I’d love to get a better look at Marreese Speights, who hasn’t played in  games due to a sprained knee. Doesn’t look like he’s going to dress.

Either way it appears that the Sixers brass isn’t all that high on the ex-Florida forward.

” ‘In love’ wouldn’t be the phrase I’d use to describe the Sixers’ relationship with Speights,”Jordan Sams of the Philly blog Liberty Ballers told me today.

“His work ethic has been a major issue, and in my eyes, he’s extremely available as far as a trade is concerned.”

I know, I know, we should be leery of a big man with work ethic questions. Ricky from Sixers4Guidos adds this.

“…Speights is a very talented offensive player that unfortunately plays little defense, can’t box out (yet) and lacks bulk & height to play regularly against the NBA elite big men. He can score, though, in many ways, and has the balls to take (and knock down) big shots in crunch time…”

The Sixers can’t move Elton Brand, will they hold onto Speights after Sam Dalembert’s contract ends after next season? It’s likely, but I don’t know. Either way, Speights is a young, cheap and talented big that could be available come summer time.

the dunk was good he jumped over mugsy son
but not better than jr smith 360 alley-oop

  • Hydr0

Speights at $1.6 million…he’s the least of their problems lol

  • Knicks4life

Lil man did the right thing trying to take that charge.

His teamates didn’t even try to run back.

  • Knicks4life

The Knicks have NOTHING to offer the Sixers for Speights. They have four players under contract and no 1st round picks.

  • HaS

That kid was trying to take the charge lol.

He looks like he’s about 5’10″, hard to tell though but he doesn’t look 5’3″ (Muggsy’s height) at all.

  • BluEandOrange

There is no excuse for Walsh not to try and acquire a center during the deadline

Tyrus Thomas and James for Harrington would have at least provided a legit shot blocker.

Hilton Armstrong would have been a good acquisition in the T-Mac deal since his contract is expiring.

No excuse for Walsh not to get a center for the stretch run.

    Just throwing two years away…

  • BluEandOrange

    Also, forget Speights.

Just offer the Kings $3 MM for Hawes and the starting center position is solved.

  • HaS

    “Just throwing two years away…”

    That was the plan.

Oh no wait… that was the spin.

  • Knicks4life

To be fair, Walsh brought in Wilcox, Darko, and Bender (who D’Antoni uses as a wing player(?)) so you can’t blame Walsh for not bringing in people who play the center position.

D’Antoni just refuses to use classic centers. If Lee got hurt D’Antoni would probably start Harrington at the 5.

  • Knicks4life

    See above. I doubt D’Antonti gives Hawes 10 min/game.

  • Knicks4life

would love to Dalembert in Orange and Blue but D’Antoni would never play him.

Sam would love it in NY. Huge Hatian population.

  • Knicks4life

Douglas is better than Mardy Collins.

  • Hustle

If Douglas scored half as many points, it’d still be worth playing him for his defense alone

Also, looks like Gallo is getting his stroke back

  • SilentJay

His defense alone makes him better than Collins.

  • SilentJay

D’antoni doesn’t know how to use a vast majority of his players, imo.

  • ds2488

Very solid win. I am liking this core of Gallo, Chandler, and Douglas more every day. Gallo was good and played great d on Iguodala. Douglas was very good yet again, and is another great defender. These guys have a good future if they keep working. Jrue Holliday is a good prospect also, I didn’t like him much coming out of college but at his young age he can really be a good player if he keeps this up. Another solid win. On a side note, How many times did Clyde say Al Harrington playing matador defense? It seemed like it happened at least 5 different times and all I could think to myself was wow is this the first time Clyde is noticing this. Haha.

  • x-man

Yep. I’m anxious to see TD up against Rondo with both teams haing off tomorrow.

Perimeter T-Mac is baaaaaaaaack! Cousin Vince Cater will give him a call tonite saying that’s how family do it!

  • itzyung1

All can Walsh can do is present the trade if the team takes it or not is their choice. No clue how that is Walsh’s fault…BUT there was news that Walsh was pushing fpr Ty Thomas.

  • ds2488

haha. Hey come on man, what do you expect Tmac to do. The whole painted area belongs to our favorite ninja turtle who needs it open to pull off his spinning turtle special layup.

  • SilentJay

I knew you’d jump on those. I think the guy’s just trying to adjust to his limitations and working to his perimeter shot. He knows he won’t be able to penetrate too many times during games, so he needs his alternatives to be solid.
If Chucketts can do it, let him as well.
TD is definitely gonna have his work for him tomorrow. It’ll be a real test and Boston really needs the W, so they’ll probably come out steamin’. Let’s see how that one goes.

  • Mal

They did a better job on the boards in the second half, BUT man if we a 7footer like Sammy to fight for boards and swat at shots wow dat be nice.

TD looks pretty good still making dumb mistakes but I likes, heck all the Knicks make dumb mistakes so the thing is lessons learned.

I still think no matter how this season finishes TMac should be brought back for pennies and still try for max cats unless LBJ not available get one and spread money for serviceable cats to make playoffs and the rest for 2011 but still keep TMac

I want the real height of Wilson Chandler announced too, he is not I repeat he is not 6’8 maybe 6’5

    Good win guys thanks

    Things to note:

    - When Lee receives a pass and hesitates what to do with it, then shoots the ball, he misses the shot.

    - Gallinari needs to stop taking step back jumpers because he is hitting front rim most of the time. No need for him at 6′ 10″ to being fading away. He just needs to use his legs more and surge higher to get that shot over the defender like Nowitzki does.

    - Douglas is a defensive demon and his handling is solid. He can run the pick and roll play and needs to do so more often.

    - Unless Lee is about to score, he doesn’t hustle. As emphasized when Douglas passed him the ball on the wing and the ball was stolen. The “stealer” then ran towards his basket and made a quick behind the back pass to Holiday. Lee could have easily stolen the behind the back pass if he actually tried to run up the court instead of standing still.

    - Chandler’s inability the dribble the ball in crowds is a problem. However, I like the fact he is using the “cuffing” the ball to protect it and make easy layups.

    - Harrington actually passed the ball several times today. Its crazy.

    - Walker is falling deeply in love with the three. Its a fatal attraction.

D’Antoni needs to stop making excuses and needs to start saying it was his fault for not playing the young guns.

  • italian stallion

I’ve liked Douglas all along, but I’m starting to think he has a shot to be more than just a very good role player.

  • SilentJay

I need to see T-Mac a bit more before I decide whether he should be here or not. His old game is gone so his work’s cut out for him, perimeter shots, ball rotation, etc.
Gallo needs to work on his boards. For a guy his size he really needs to get up there to collect more rebounds, but glad to see he’s getting more touches and feeling the ball a little more.
Today was a perfect example of the type of player Lee is when he’s not scoring: useless.
TD again putting up good D, hell of a hustle and really making tough for the other guards to work. I hope that assist rate can keep going as well as his scoring.
But a W is W, good for them.

  • Mal

Yea I picked up on that stepping back by Gallo and thought the exact same thing

I want to see Walker’s handle, can he drive to the hoop? Yes fools gold those treys can be sometimes

I just dont like us being smaller than everybody, put Bender in let him run plays from the top of the key, let him try the pick and roll and have him mix it up in the paint fighting for boards, he is 7 feet cmon Mike stop trippin

  • italian stallion

I agree. Wilson is not 6’8″.

  • SilentJay

How can any player NOT fall in love with the 3 if he plays in a system that condones taking even the impossible ones. A guy like Gallo was able to get double digits with just 2-6 attempts. He, as opposed to many other players on this team, has understood when the moment is right to have a go at the 3 pointer. The kid has an intense game and he needs to balance his game, take it more to the rim, go for easy jumpers, etc. Sort of the process that Chandler went through. As for Will, the kid needs to work on his handle during the preseason, at his height he could make a nice SG if he actually had a handle and some court smarts (which is being exposed as a weakness more and more every game).
Lee just proved the type of player he is when he’s not scoring, a waste of space.
Yes, as a SF Gallo will often have the height advantage, but I think it’s good for him to expand his skill set and being able to score on fade aways, pull ups, runners, leaners, and not purely 3′s. All in all, this will hepl whenever D’antoni understand’s his true position is the 4.

  • ds2488

I think the stepback can be a really good weapon for Gallo to have but it seems like he just doesn’t have the leg or arm strength right now to pull it off consistently. If he gets that down though, he will be really tough. He just has to keep working…If he does that and avoids injury he has a really bright future.

  • ds2488

Well said man. Chandler has made a huge adjustment by not taking the 3 and if he develops his handle more he can be a beast going to the basket. Gallo is a smart player, he just sometimes physically doesn’t have enough to do what he needs to, and therefore settles for lazy jumpers. Add to that an offense that calls for him to stand around the 3 and the fact that sometimes he just can’t seem to get a pick to help him and it can be tough for him to not shoot. But he keeps developing more discipline which is obviously good.

  • SilentJay

Definitely, god to have some on the team, and since standing around shouldn’t be for a guy like Gallo who can a lot more, I say his best option is to be moved at the 4. The strength he can gain in the offseason, but if he starts playing now he can understand what it takes. He’ll do it better than Chandler, I’ll tell you that much.

  • SilentJay

Chicago got a better offer for him, they got a player + a pick, no brainer. Donnie had nothing else to give. It’s not like we have a handfull of picks to use.

  • x-man

lmao! You know he’s looking forward to all that green in Boston on Wednesday!

  • gonygo

i always thought that he would be just a scrub, and nothing more.Hopefully,im wrong

  • Anandp1001

Ive seen enough and am now convinced that Amare, Bosh, or Boozer are better options than Lee, even if their contracts are a bit more than Lee’s… This guy’s defense and boxing out are so F#$% awful!
Walker is clearly a solid backup 2/3, and maybe an upper echelon backup wing.. but we cant talk starter material at this point, esp for a contender.
TD has shown all the skills and all the attitude/drive needed IMO to start at PG for a contender if he had LBJ or Wade to alleviate some offense/playmaking responsibilities.
I think Gallo is a better 3 than a 4, and defensively is best used on the perimeter at this point in his career.
To the dude who said to use Bender.. NO. lol
With KG, Perkins, Rasheed, and even big baby able to score at will vs our “bigs”, i cant see us winning and keeping pace, but hopefully Al and Chandler can show some grit and we can put up a good fight vs Boston
