Sergio Sits…For Now

by Tommy Dee on March 22nd, 2010 at 10:52 am

With his solid play, Toney Douglas has grabbed control of the starting point guard spot. It appears that Mike D’Antoni is willing to live with the rookie’s mistakes, highlighted by yesterday’s last few minutes. To summarize, Douglas committed to his drive and was exposed by Jared Jeffries.

In doing so, D’Antoni has turned to Chris Duhon to apparently sure up the back up minutes, mainly because Sergio Rodriguez has the tendency to cough the ball up.

Case in point was the game against Atlanta, the last game S-Rod played 20+ minutes, he turned the ball over 6 times. Since joining the Knicks at the deadline, Sergio has 57 assists and 32 turnovers.

He’s young and I like the way he plays at a fast speed, but you can’t turn it over that much.

Obviously, Duhon is plugged back in because of injuries, but Rodriguez hasn’t overly impressed and he has been given the opportunity. If he wants back in the lineup, and he should be given more time to be evaluated, he has to value the basketball.

  • BiggieSmalls

I like S Rod..love how he pushes the pace and he is a pure passer. As opposed to Douglas who is more shooter than distributor.

Sergio is actually 3 months YOUNGER that Douglas.

The turnovers are a little disturbing but he manages to get steals in spurts.

Not sure if we can afford him as a back up next year but if we are going add a 33 year old Raja Bell and a few other aging vets we should balance that out with a few under 25 projects.

I’ve liked Sergio from day one and still believe he has the play making abilities to be at least a very good backup pg. Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong but it seems he has a knack at getting in passing lanes and always seems to be around the ball.

Over 15 games with the he has 32 turnovers and 57 assists but don’t forget that the 17 steals he has as well.

Too many turnovers will be his down fall if he can control that and if Coach Mike D’Antoni hasn’t already made a final judgement on him I think he is a nice piece to the bench.

  • Jeff C

I like Sergio too but i am starting to think he won’t have a place here, especially given Toney’s recent development.

Wow… i mean Tony looks crazy good out there. Anyone aware of the fact that he has the 6th best rookie PER? And the sample size argument is slowly climbing out the window with every 30+ minute game he plays.

He looks like he can score efficiently with the likes of rondo, deron, paul, nash, etc… (in terms of PGs who can score a lot but still get close to the .500 mark.) but unlike rondo (and CP3 of old), he appears to already have a wet 3 point shot.

I’m starting to become very excited about this guy; we may have found a diamond in the rough. the coolest part about his game is that nobody can stay in front of him…. If he can actually play PG and work on refining his game, that is something that could separate him.

  • BiggieSmalls

remember that we are in the “garbage time” of the NBA season..

Also, Im yet to see him go left and finish with his left hand.. I saw him go left and actually spin around to put the ball up right handed.

Teams will start to scout that and force him that way when games matter next year.

you’re right it is an extremely small sample and I dont think that can change from here out..

I would not call him the “answer” at PG unless we have Joe Johnson and Lebron on the court with him..

he definitely has a nice stroke from down town… But again.. Im gonna need to see it in games that actually matter

  • joetheknick

I like S=Rod’s game and see him as a keeper. He and Toney should share time at PG next season. Duhon is getting some minutes now to help him to market himself for the future. Barring a Chris Paul surprise, He needs to offset his turnovers with more steals. He can do that.

  • HaS

Is it me or is it all or nothing with this “coach”?

It’s either 30+ minutes or a DNP, there doesn’t seem to be a gray area.

I wasn’t overly enamored with the kid, but Sergio should still be in the rotation for evaluation purposes imho.

  • manners

Based off of Hill getting no run for no good reason and Douglas suddenly getting run, I don’t have faith in D’antoni’s ability to work with and judge talent but I do like Sergio. He just needs time to develop and time in one system to do that developing. Give him the summer to workout and get a little stronger. Let him work on his defense and ball security and the team might just have a very good point guard. Two very good point guards. The fact that Toney Douglas scores the ball shouldn’t be his liability as far as being the teams pg of the future. Both are young players in the league team should work with them.

Also…. It bugs me to see R. Bell mentioned. This isn’t a young team in need of a veteran to get over the hump. It’s a team that ‘s filled with players on the last year of their contracts that hasn’t made the playoffs in over 10yrs. The team has the unique opportunity to totally rebuild a franchise that has been dormaint for way to long and R. Bell is someone of interest?! Team needs young players and young stars!!!.. Tommy Dee I’d my boy. Love his passion for the game and the team and all but I gotta blame him for puttin those Bell thoughts into heads because he wrote about taking a shot on him in a recent post.

  • HaS

I notice Jeff is very big on PER and efficiency ratings, I like Toney but I’m still not sold on his point guard ability. He seems to telegraph his passes and has difficulty passing off the dribble.

I really wish this kid had been playing all year, I think we all would have a better idea of what his potential ceiling is and more importantly potential free agents would have an idea of what one of their teammates is capable of. I’m glad he’s getting an opportunity now though. Tough loss and lesson to learn from Sunday, but the kid is a gamer he’ll bounce back.

  • BiggieSmalls

spot on.. why Duhon is getting minutes again is beyond me.

  • manners

I hear what your saying but being able to shoot from downtown is being able to shoot from downtown. Just because he’s hitting shot in garbage time doesn’t mean he won’t be able to do it when games matter more. I’ve seen him go left but we definetly need more time to see what he’s got. Hr did come to the team during the seasons ending. Doesn’t know plays or anything. It’s harder for a point than for someone like B.Walker to come in and show what he’s got.
HaS is right when he writes that it’s either 30+ minutes or pine time.

  • BiggieSmalls

what I meant by seeing him hit shots in games that matter is I would expect there to be more on ball defense in a game that actually means something,.. Can he drain shots consistently with a man in his face rather than wide open?

It’s a lot to ask but something we havent really seen a large sample of.. Also, end of games that matter are non-existent at this point of the season.

I dont want to be all negative.. Im encouraged by what i see and DO wish we would/could have seen more of him from at least early january.. but so be it.

Sergio sitting for Duhon seems non sensical.. par for the course with this “coach”..

  • BigDaddybluesman

I like serge, he does need to get stronger and work on his game. This off season he should be working on his body, his game and study in the film room. That is if he wants to be at least a backup PG on a good team in the NBA.

Like so many players it’s up to them and how much they want to work. He has some tools and is a good athlete. If he does his work in time he may even be a starter, it’s up to him and how much he wants it.

  • joetheknick

you are right. D’Antoni has said on his TV show that he does not like to give rookies a few minutes and sit down. He believes a rookie needs serious court time or no court time. Makes sense to me. You don’t want to put a rookie in and then pull him if he makes a bad decision, or a bad shot, or misses an assignment. Needs time on the court to make those mistakes. That, of course, assumes he is on the court to help the team to win.

  • http://tharealestproductionz.blogspot.com/ DaGawD_KnowLedge

fits perfect as a 7th man an up.

thought he would do better but now u know why he has been a bench player.

this team is real good at getting bench players an starting them or trying to make them starters

    ask a civic to be a benz……………………………………………

  • ds2488

I really liked Sergio at first, but he has not been playing nearly as well for a while. To make matters worse, in the past few games he’s played he has been more aggressive looking for his own shot than creating for others. To add to that, he is just out of control on offense and plays some of the worst defense I have ever seen..although he does get some steals which is nice. I would love to see him continue to get minutes but we all know that Chris Duhon needs his minutes for his next contract. God forbid the guy makes 1.3 million next year only and just stole 14 million from the Knicks. He really needs that extra 2 million for next year. And of course, a young player like Sergio whos nba career might be on the line doesn’t need the pt..he’s already made 1 million dollars so he’s good.

  • BiggieSmalls

far be it from a coach to hold his players accountable for on court indiscretions.

Much better to let them continue and develop bad habits

    i hate this “coach”

  • Mal

I like Sergio, I like how he drives to the hoop and is not afraid to try/make passes.

TD is still a little hesistant to try certain passes especially in P&R situations.

What I want Serg do to over the offseason is work on his jumper daily ala like D Lee apparently did. Next year, yeah Raja might bring defense and a toughness, but Im like Big we should also keep young Serg who IMO with an improved jumper would be more like Nash

TD would fit better with LBJ kinda like how Mo Williams plays off LBJ. Since LBJ is mainly a ball dominator. Personally I dont think LBJ comes to us but that is something to think about if he did come

  • DatNewYorker

I have observed Duhon turnover the ball and miss easy lay ups and play horrible defense all year. So I don’t mind the turnovers from SROD he is what he is. He is a young talent that is learning and adjusting to the NBA. One thing for sure is that he will be a much better PG than Chris Duhon. Right now he gives us a better chance to win. This is the time to play your young talent and this is the time for the rookies to make mistakes. There is absolutely no reason why Duhon should be playing over SROD. I’m tired of hearing these foolish naive D’Antoni supporters make excuses for the asinine coaching decisions that are repeatedly made by this so called Coach.

  • Knicks4life

Would have loved to see Douglas and Hill playing early when the games mattered because you are right teams have no scouting report now on Douglas and the whole team is playing like it doesn’t matter (other than Douglas, Lee and Gallo).

For instance I was wondering why Douglas had the ball in his hands so much down the stretch to make those turnovers in the first place. He is a rookie that barely played all year and now he has the ball in his hands consistently down the stretch? Shouldn’t that be T-Mac or Gallo or even Lee with the ball.

But then I remembered, it doesn’t matter. Not to the coach, GM, or players. Only we fans seem to still care.

  • Knicks4life

As I said above though (before reading your post) ball should have been in his hands to make a play anyway.

  • joetheknick

I kniow you do. You might have to get used to him as he appears to be well entrenched at the moment.

  • Knicks4life

Sergio is a great backup PG because of his ability to change the pace of the game (i.e. speed it up) and get steals. Problem is we were using him as a starter. Now that TD is the clear cut starter this is the best time to evaluate Sergio in a backup role for 15 min/game.

Instead D’Antoni goes back to Duhon who has no future on the team. That move is beyond perplexing.

  • SilentJay

Just wait for next season. If 30 games pass and results aren’t what they should be (with this I mean being over .500), expect DW to take excecutive action and send him packing back to Europe so he can perfect his SSOL.

  • Anandp1001

stop sweating MDA on the PG situation so much…
Whether he should have used Toney since game 1 or not is an unknown; I would err on the side of him not having been ready. Now, he should have started using him in January or so, but I don’t think that the timing is bad; it’s not like he was not getting better from watching the games and from being in practice. Also, hes getting minutes the last 30 games of the season; that’s enough time to showcase to other ppl and to LeBron what we have and the potential he has. Also, its Retarded to discount what hes doing right now because we’re out of the race… you guys are saying that next year will be different bc teams will scout Doug and play him tougher??? When we play against Dallas and Houston etc we are playing against teams who ARE trying to win and are playing hard… and from the NY perspective, when the game is winding down and theyre trying to win the game, it might not be as much pressure on him as it would be if we were in contention, but the guys are still focused, competing, and trying to get that W. Get off MDA’s case. He’s using Duhon because hes one of his guys and he wants him to get an audition before hes a FA. Sergio and Duhon are BOTH going to be gone next year so thats just what it is. Expect in 2010 to see Toney, a 2nd rounder PG or a NBDL pg, and another PG acquired in an Eddy Curry trade

  • onemoretime

I just had a scary thought. Any of you guys think D’Antoni is so obsessed with Duhon that he will lobby Walsh to reup him for next year? I wouldn’t put it past this coach whose ego won’t let him admit that his handpicked pointguard for the past 2 years has been a complete bust.

  • x-man

Its amazing with the dumba-s-s coach! We already know what Duhon gives us and he has had the rein of the pt guard position for quite some time. what is the purpose of Duhon in these last games?

Even now this dumba-s-s coach will not play Sergio along with TD to see what these guys can bring to the table. We need to see these guys over a longer period of time.

Anyone thinks this coach develops players is not paying attention. This coach confuses players more than Isiah did.

I can’t wait for the day he is fired and sent packing. He surely has earned it.

  • http://tharealestproductionz.blogspot.com/ DaGawD_KnowLedge

    the last 20 games.

    lmao
    are u danni boy’s AGENT?
danni boy is the worse coach in the world.
the guy has no clue an any1 that defends a person like that is sebrina the clueless b8ch.

    thats real talk for ya..

  • x-man

Say What? “He is using Duhon to audition him bere he becomes a FA?”

Who the hell does this coach works for?

Everyone with a brain already knows what Duhon is! You mean to tell me that if we are gonna get a LBJ, we will be keeping TD, Sergio and Duhon next year? Yikes!

We would be better off dropping Duhon off at the Salvation Army box!

Get off MDA case? Wake up!

  • x-man

Yep, That’s why Bell might be =here unless the GM puts his foot down. This coach would luv to have another lackey in the locker room to keep an eye on the others.

I keep saying it’s simpler to just send this coach back to PHX!

  • http://tharealestproductionz.blogspot.com/ DaGawD_KnowLedge

man u an a few other guys know that danni boy is doing nothing the players are using there own mind an skills to do what they doing
samething in phoenix this guy got 2much credit in phoenix

now good coaches under the rader is scott brooks an scott skiles either 1 might win the C.O.Y

  • x-man

Yep, i always liked Scott Skiles even when the Bulls were not doing well. Skiles is hard nosed like when he played. He has no problems getting up in a players face and demanding things be done a certain way.

Each year the dude is getting better at his craft.

Then there’s the phonies that come along that gets more credit than deserved. Yeah D’antonu made Nash my a-s-s! Nash made D’Antoni’s a-s-s! Nash is still doing the things he always did!

  • x-man

Are you a Knicks Fan? lol

Duhon needs the money? Duhon has been overpaid for year already! That’s not our problem.

We need to fin out if Sergio can be the backup pt guard for us next year. If he’s not doing certain things on the court, it is the coach’s resp to pt this out and insist they he do them. Going back to Duhon now when Sergio is the guy wee need to evaluate is another non strategic bonehead move by this coach.

All teams Know what Duhon is by now and so should we.

  • http://tharealestproductionz.blogspot.com/ DaGawD_KnowLedge

only people that have no clue say danni boy made nash
nash was always a solid player an he ran into a system he could dominate.

marburys best year was under skiles.
skiles don’t play he’s like spreewell he would choke ya if u don’t play rite.lol.

  • oscar f

I much prefer TD than him going foward . The team doesn’t look good with sergio at the pg. I would much rather go foward with TD snce he would be ideal if you have a guy like LBJ an Joe on the team where he doesn’t have to be a play maker. He can man his position to the point of changing the game with his D and he knocs down open shots . To say that he only does that because the knicks are not playing for anything is stupid since the opponents who are playing fo something are not just going to give him open shots. He has had a lot o 20pt games since being a starter and has had some really good shoting games where he hit clutch shots. I think there will be a better pg than Sergio in the draft in the second round and that would b a cheaper option.

  • SilentJay

Duhon has no place in a court until the rest of his life, but I can’t really expect sane decisions out of this coach anyway. With that said, it’s good to have that mix with two uptempo PG’s where one’s a passh first and the other likes to score (although I think that as he grows into the PG role Toney will learn the patience of passing first and waiting to get the 3 or to penetrate).
Of course, S-Rod has a long way to go and you can never be sure of how much he controls the ball with all those TO he gives. Often times he goes for the flashy pass instead of the safe one, and that learning curve usually goes the other way around. In any case, things that ha has to work on for now.
This team is at a place where everyone that gets to see PT is under evaluation, and we’ve seen what Duhon can do, and it’s ugly as hell.
Let this kid be the backup and give nice minutes.

  • SilentJay

Seems D’antoni has no patience. That’s unbelievable, considering the man himself doesn’t bring results. To say that he’s got “two very good point guards” seems like a huge stretch to me, because Toney shows intense D and the ability to score, but as a facilitator the guy still has a long way to go, which is the inverse case of S-Rod, having more vision to creat and a harder time score (he can penetrate but has no outside shot at all).
So the coach’s got two nice and developing PG’s going through some growing pains (harder growing pains due to the fact that they have practice under this horrible coach) and he’s gotta use them the best way possible, but even more important, give them both heavy minutes.
There’s nothing wrong in seeing what Bell’s gotta give. Any player who knows how defend properly and can shoot while not being selfish is well received in this team after seeing so many players not making efforts to defend and just chucking away. If it’s possible, this team should see as many players as possible before the FA. A good all around team is seen by the balance of youth, talent and experience to balance it out so it can be mature enough to handle tough situations.

  • Mucha

I think S. Rod is overrated, he’s like a poor man’s Jason Williams. He doesn’t play defense, he turns the ball over too much and he doesn’t recognize who has the hot hand.

I don’t think he deserves to play.
