by Myles A. Mills on April 5th, 2010 at 2:40 pm

Via Marc Stein’s Twitter:

“All 30 NBA teams have been notified by official league memo that the Knicks have waived guard Cuttino Mobley”

“Mobley release will save Knicks roughly $9.5 million in luxury-tax payments, reducing their tax bill in July to $5 million range”

“Mobley release also reduces rebate check teams get for staying under NBA’s $69.9 million luxury-tax threshhold from $4 mil to $3.7 mil”

I didnt’ quite understand this whole scenario. Wasn’t Mobley’s contract supposed to be extremely valuable because it was like 75% covered by insurance? We couldn’t trade it for anything of value?

If you think about it, its quite crazy that we basically traded Zach Randolph (all-star) for Tim Thomas. Of course, if that ends up being Lebron its obviously well-worth it.

Oh don’t get me wrong. I loved the Zach Randolph trade. That guy is the definition of a loser and I can bet that Memphis isn’t too happy that they are now paying him all that money and they still can’t make the playoffs with all that talent.

I really expected the Knicks to trade Mobley’s expiring/covered by insurance contract before the deadline but I guess they just wanted to let his contract come off the books without a trade. Either way, that’s another bad contract to say goodbye too. Now I can’t wait to see Al “ballhog” Harrington go away….

i think this piece is incorrect..

what actually happened was the league ruled on Mobley’s medical retirement. Removing him from the roster and simultaneously absolving the knicks of their luxury tax obligations on his salary..

if they had simply waived Mobley his salary would still be on the books (as it is guaranteed) and subject to the luxury tax calculation.

What took the league this long is beyond me. its inside baseball but the league ruling led to the luxury tax savings not the waving.

Donnie COULD HAVE used Mobley’s money to get another player at the deadline but it ultimately would have cost the knicks (read Dolan) the luxury tax money

mobley will be on a team next season.

he didn’t want to waste his time with the knicks.

he will be playing again soon…

Why would Lebron come here now, with Mobley gone,he has no reason to sign with us.Hes the only player on the Knicks that didnt make a ton of stupid mistakes this year

  • cragganmor

we have another open roster spot, we should sign rob kurz, 6’9″ can rebound and hit the 3, post up and defend a bit.

  • http://dagawdknowledge.blogspot.com/ DaGawD_KnowLedge

    yes that is correct….

  • x-man

Maybe the league thought Mobley was still faster than Duhon and deserved to be on the roster until really hurt himself recently. Just a thought!

  • Rene

The Knicks should sign me I’m only 54 but I can play better defense than Lee.

I WONDER IF THIS IS TO OPEN UP A ROSTER SPOT, TO POSSIBLY SIGN RAJA BELL FOR THE REST OF THE SEASON……might as well see if he has any gas left in his tank, and get a step up on any team in the league this summer….he’d be a serviceable 2guard for us next season…

I WONDER WHERE MANU GINOBLI IS ON THE LIST FOR THE FREE AGENTS NEXT SEASON…
    LEBRON
    WADE
    JOHNSON
    BOSH
    LEE
    AMARE
    GINOBLI???

  • LB2NYplz

    zach is perfect for memphis
they play in the west n made a huge stride this year
their point guard or bench isnt that good either

We had both parts of the best BFF tandem in the NBA… possibly ever.

    Francis and Mobley.

What a shame we didn’t have them at the same time.

The bromance those two shared was special.
