NEW YORK(AP) Danilo Gallinari scored a career-high 31 points, including the go-ahead basket with 36 seconds left, Earl Barron had 17 points and a career-best 18 rebounds, and the New York Knicks beat the Boston Celtics 104-101 on Tuesday night.

David Lee had the clinching basket and added 13 points and 11 boards for the Knicks, who won their second straight and temporarily avoided a third consecutive 50-loss season.

Ray Allen scored 17 points for the Celtics, who blew a chance to tie Atlanta for third place in the Eastern Conference. Kevin Garnett and Kendrick Perkins each added 14 for Boston, which botched its final possession and couldn’t get a tying 3-point attempt off in the final seconds.

The Celtics followed their victory over Cleveland on Sunday by losing for the fourth time in five games after leading early in the fourth quarter behind a spark from former Knicks guard Nate Robinson.

Gallinari scored 19 points in the third quarter to give the Knicks an 86-78 lead, but Robinson hit a 3-pointer and assisted on Glen Davis‘ jumper in the Celtics’ 10-0 run to start the fourth that gave them an 88-86 advantage on Michael Finley’s 3-pointer.

Robinson hit another jumper for a one-point lead midway through the period, and it stayed tight from there. Gallinari banked in a long jumper – originally called a 3-pointer but overturned after replay – for a 102-101 lead with 36 seconds left.

Chris Duhon came up with a steal and set up David Lee’s basket that made it 104-101 with 7.3 seconds to play. The Celtics called time but took way too long to swing the ball to the opposite side of the court, where Rasheed Wallace caught it too late to get off a shot.

With Tracy McGrady (sore left knee) and Al Harrington (sore left ankle) joining Wilson Chandler (sore left groin) on the injured list, the Knicks had to look deep down the bench for scoring. They found it in Barron, a 7-foot center who signed last week from the NBA Development League and was playing his second game with New York. He hadn’t started in the NBA since making 15 starts for the Miami Heat in 2007-08, but shot 8 of 13 and spent all night chasing down missed shots against Boston’s frustrated front line…more.

  • DatNewYorker

I like the fact that Lee was annoying Garnett. KG was getting upset and looking for the refs. David Lee numbers tonight were what it should look like when he is playing with a true center. We did not look that bad on defense. Don’t want to see Duhon start again I don’t care if we lose play Douglas until his the Garden can hear his heart pounding.

  • CircleLimit4

Gotta admit Duhon came up big. Kinda pathetic that he had the Knicks only block.

  • DVJ

Am I the only one seeing positive things toward the end of this season.

    Another good game for Gallo….ANOTHER.
    Can anybody say player development?

Wins against Dallas, Denver, Atlanta and now Boston.
    I likes it….I likes it a lot.

  • http://dagawdknowledge.blogspot.com/ DaGawD_KnowLedge

missed the game but i see they won.

how about the knicks give shaun livingston a look this summer………..

  • LB2NYplz

    ATTENTION KNICK FANS
WE HAVE OUR CENTER OF THE FUTURE IN EARL BARRON
this guy deserves most improved player of the year

i guess we dont need chris bosh anymore
just resign david lee and pair him up with the shot blocking defensive minded center in earl barron

  • pak14life

these are the nights that make u think that gallo will be an absolute star. Love the factt hat he didnt rely on the 3 pointer.
Dlee just missed some jumpshots tonite although played great help d.
Like some have said no surprise gallo played this way when al wasnt playing.

  • BluEandOrange

See how overrated Lee is? Against the Celtics, Barron, in his first game at MSG, had 17 points and 18 boards, better than Lee by 5 points and 7 bounds.

Lee only has good stats because he is the only front court player that has to get the boards; Chuckits and their SFs, either McGrady or Walker, are already running down the court so they can chuck up another shot.

The sad thing about this was Lee, who was technically guarding the 4 this time, was still so poor defensively. Near the end of the game he gave up a couple of easy buckets in a row capping it with Wallace hitting a short fade away jumper.

Lee is not worth anything. Earl Barron proved that today. And he was not under the radar since he played well before the D-League All-Star game. Donnie should have picked him up then knowing he would potentially have to pull the trigger on the Jeffries deal and lose both he and Hill, the only legitimate size they had.

Walsh is slow on the uptake. We need a GM who can keep up with the speed of the game in this century.

  • pak14life

    BEO you are retarded

  • ds2488

    Great game.

Barron was awesome. He did all the things Lee usually does, except instead of good passes he played solid defense. Lee is much better served as a 4. His stats will suffer though.

Gallo was amazing. Games like this make you think he’s a star. Then you watch games like Portland and you think he’s a less effective Jason Kapono. That guy really has to find his consistency.

  • Mucha

I think Mike D’Antoni did a very good job tonight – even though Gallinari should’ve played more in the 4th quarter. The Knicks should’ve fouled Rondo but I don’t think D’Antoni expected him to hold the ball for like 5 seconds… Happy ending anyways.

Gallinari was brilliant tonight – I like the fact that he reached the 30-point plateau with only 1-4 3FGM-A. He always took advantage of mismatches and he attacked the basket – very good shot selection.

David Lee played well at the 4 spot – even though Garnett and Perkins looked like dinosaurs. I don’t think Lee can be a 20 & 10 power forward because he needs space and playing with a true center reduces it but I like this David Lee more than Avi!

And Chris Duhon was fantastic down the stretch. He shouldn’t be allowed to shoot 3′s though, but he came up big on both ends in the final minutes. No disrespect to Tracy McGrady and Al Harrington but I like this team sans T-Mac and Buckets. Great game.

earl B is trying to make the best of his last in the nba…

let’s see what he does for the rest of the 6 7 games…

  • Mucha

You always miss the games when they win. Strange.

don’t 4get our p.g of the future s-rod or duhon
i think they might bring back both..

    “Barron was awesome”
I see. Sarcasm is changing from one blog entry to another.. LOL

  • LB2NYplz

watch earl barron pull a 2pt 4rbd 5foul effort the next game
    it always happens

and then fans can go back to blaming david lee

  • harris

I do think though it’s very strange how a guy can go off for 19 points in the third quarter, and then you don’t see him at all for the first 8 minutest of the fourth quarter of a close game. That and the fact that the highest number of minutes played went to a guy who many people didn’t even know existed until 5 days ago.

I guess all’s well that ends well though.

  • LB2NYplz

maybe earl barron deserved to make the all star team and play at the university of florida instead of david lee

  • http://dagawdknowledge.blogspot.com/ DaGawD_KnowLedge

    i hope AL chuckster an t-crak don’t play for the last 6 7 games…

remember folks any player can have a goodnite on any given night
    it’s all about consistency…

  • ds2488

LOL. I was poking fun at the fact that people are already anointing him as a future part of this team. A lot of stuff happens in the future. No doubt about it, he was fantastic tonight. I was referring to the future, not the present.

  • LB2NYplz

i was think how bout the knicks give luc longley, anthony mason and jayson williams (both of them; if the incarcerated one is available) a look this summer

“Gallinari was brilliant tonight – I like the fact that he reached the 30-point plateau with only 1-4 3FGM-A. He always took advantage of mismatches and he attacked the basket – very good shot selection.”

    Great Point bro

also … (ducks to avoid people throwing things at me) ive been thinking to myself a few games ago, when duhon re-cracked the rotation and hit a couple shots, looking a tad more confident …. is it THAT CRAZY to think he might be back as the backup PG for a min contract?
the coach like him, he works hard .. but he’s just not really good … but for a team who s going to need to sign MULTIPLE players to min contracts to fill out a roster … thoughts?

  • Lebris Jamosh aka ridiculous upside

    It’s 1 game. Chill.

  • Dylan

Wow Earl Barron was great. I loved when he was in the game along with Gallo and Walker. Its nice to see the effort on defense. Great game for Duhon too. I cant stand seeing him shoot the ball, but he really does run the offense well, which is something that TD needs to learn how to do. We all know Duhon doesn’t have a future here but its nice to see him leave in style. Even though he had some terrible stretches, he has always been a real team player. He really did come up huge down the stretch with the block, layup, and steal.

Crazy how big a difference having a true center can make. It really makes you wonder how it took the Knicks so long to find a big body to plug in the middle. The Knicks out rebounded the Celtics 34 to 44, and Barron had EIGHT offensive rebounds. If the guy continues playing like this, he is going to have a real good shot to make the roster next year. The Knicks need physical players like that. I loved seeing him diving for loose balls and crashing the boards. Again, its too soon to go too crazy about the guy. Lets see if he can continue playing like this. Its also good that we are finally getting the chance to see Lee at PF. I really want to see how he matches up with opposing PFs. Garnett was obviously an extrememly difficult challenge, but I thought Lee did a pretty decent job.

Anyway great all around game. The team really does look a lot better without Chucketts or T-Mac. The Knicks actually are able to move the ball. If T-Mac is going to stay with this team, he has to learn how to play a lot quicker. Having him hold the ball for 15 seconds really disrups the timing of the offense.

  • harris

I noticed that Earl Barron was wearing No.: 30 tonight. No offense, but it kills me that they provide a D leaguer with the number of one of the Knicks’ greatest all time players (Bernard King, who for my money should be in the basketball hall of fame). I can’t even remember the last time a Knick wore that number (I have a vague recollection of it having been worn maybe once since Bernard left the Knicks).

  • Hustle

To be fair, the Knicks have a .364 winning percentage, so it’s easy to miss their wins lol.

  • Mucha

    lol

  • x-man

If we get to 30 games, I’ll have to call you a genius! I still think I won’t have to. lol

  • starksoakmase

i could only watch parts of the game, but from what i saw it looks like the team is really building some cohesion and camaraderie.

I am not ready to call Barron the center of the future, but i love his effort and ability to knock down the open jumper. How great was it seeing him dive for loose balls!

If Lee can be had for 9-10 mil, it would be hard to let him go. Lee will never be a shot blocker or great one on one defender, but he is too smart to be a bad help defender when surrounded by good defenders.

This was an important game for the celtics, but the knicks outplayed them.

  • x-man

Nice win for us and a brutal loss for the Celtics. They knew Atl had lost ans still they played with little energy and urgency.

Although Doc was trying to tear into them, to be fair, I have to put this loss on Doc Rivers. Perkins sucked and he was caught pump faking under the rim so many times that it was comical. He must have thought he was still playing against the Cavs. lol

Also, Rondo didn’t even try to be shot the ball.

Doc needed to put Glenn Davis into the game over Perkins tonite. So Doc is the huge goat and a great win for us. Earl Baron may never score have the stats he had tonite, but he did play with a lot of energy and hustle. That I liked.

Our coach still sucks and Doc did too tonite. lol

  • x-man

For once, I agree with most of what you stated except for the 1st two sentence. lol Yet it was an important game for the Celtics and they were totally flat and Doc has to take the knock here for not having his team ready to win when Atl had lost.

  • x-man

Our coach still sucks. It just so happened that Doc sucked tonite too!

  • BluEandOrange

My sarcasm detector is detecting some from you.

First, get off Lee’s nuts. What has he done since being a Knick? Make the All-Star team? When has NY been a town that celebrates individual accolades over team accomplishments? Wait, the answer to that is never.

The Knicks have done nothing and therefore neither has Lee. Until Lee gets it done on a contending playoff team, then he still has everything to prove.

Earl Barron was only an example of why Lee is completely overrated. Pair Lee up with a center with mobility and can shoot the mid-range jumper, then his stats will decline substantially. Combine that with the fact he plays no defense at all, he is really not worth that much.

So he can shoot the perimeter jumper now, so can many other big men. What separates good players from great players is defense.
Lee is a good player, but worthy of a max contract? No, that is reserved for great, winning players.

Therefore, Lee and Bosh are not deserving of max contracts. Neither is Joe Johnson, whose defense, like Lee, is non-existent as well.

The only two players worthy of max consideration if Wade and LeBron. Thats it. And its LeBron and/or Wade or nothing.

  • BluEandOrange

Its actually B&O, and you know nothing about basketball, I can already tell by your asinine response. At least reinforce your claims with some justification. But no, you prefer to keep it simple, and stupid.

  • Knicks4life

Yup bring Duhon back. Jeffries too if he gets bought out.

  • BluEandOrange

Mike D’Antoni doesn’t know how to coach period.

And game like today, with Duhon playing over TD, is why he just does not get it.

Its about rebuilding now. No excuses about the playoffs anymore. And Mike still gives Duhon the ball over Douglas. I firmly believe D’Antoni is mad.

Its about next year. You give Douglas and Gallinari the minutes now. Its their time to learn from these situations. Duhon won’t be here next year. Its not about winning this year anymore, its about developing and evaluating talent for next years time.

    Still, D’Antoni doesn’t get it.

  • ds2488

You know what the problem was X? Perkins spent the night at a club hanging out with Jared Jeffries. And JJ just taught him that its pointless to make easy layups; Might as well just keep pump-faking to make it look more difficult; Thats the way to get 7 million per year. Thats what Perkins was trying to do.

  • BluEandOrange

Lee didn’t deserve to make the All-Star team. David Stern selected him to make the team.

Did you miss the All-Star game press conference with Stern when he talked about the CBA and miscellaneous topics with the press?

One question brought to Stern by a beat reporter of the Golden State Warriors questioned Stern as to why he chose Lee over Ellis.

Stern only gave a vague response in which he essentially said “I chose Lee because I wanted to beeyotches.”

So get over this Lee deserved to make the team nonsense. Horford and Ellis were more deserving than Lee.

  • BluEandOrange

Knicks should sign Curtis Stinson to play backup PG for the rest of the season. He’s from the Boogie Down and is a good sized point guard at 6′ 3″.

  • starksoakmase

bro, do you think Doc Rivers was there giving Knute Rockney speeches before every game two years ago?

    No!

Coaches do not motivate in the NBA.Players have to be self motivated, or motivated by player leaders.

Do you think P. Jackson is there giving pep talks, or is it Jordan, Shaq or Kobe?

On the college level, it is a coaches game, in the pro’s, its all about the players.

  • starksoakmase

Lee leads ALL NBA centers in PPG AND APG!

Ellis is in another conference BTW, and didn’t Horford make the all-star team?

  • boomshanka

You could tell D’antoni really wanted this one and the team played to win. Everyone hustled and it was fun to watch.

Props to Barron, Lee’s shot was off but still finished with 13 pts, 11 reb, 6 ast, 3 stl. Duhon was clutch, SRod chipped in, and of course Gallo had a great night. Can’t complain tonight.

  • LB2NYplz

    got em’

  • TrentMotherTucker

Barron had a good game. Could’ve been the #30 jersey he was wearing. Channeled B-King.

  • http://dagawdknowledge.blogspot.com/ DaGawD_KnowLedge

i got a feeling donnie will resign DUHON

  • TrentMotherTucker

I don’t think Dolan minds cutting his paycheck. He’s never embarrassed the organization.

  • TrentMotherTucker

“I chose Lee because I wanted to beeyotches.”

Most 67 year olds don’t talk like this. Most executives don’t talk like this. Most attorneys don’t talk like this. He’s been commissioner of the NBA since 84 mainly because his moves are pretty smart and he doesn’t talk like this.

  • TrentMotherTucker

I think Luke Ridnour or Steve Blake will be here before Duhon.

  • TrentMotherTucker

I’d like to see some originality instead of blaming Donnie, D’Antoni and David…. they’re easy target for haters.

However, we all know blaming is futile. So I’d rather just recognize that the best teams in sports usually have great owners. We’re stuck with Dolan.

  • bob go knicks

i have tix section 94,for sunday VS MIAMI

  • x-man

It’s not about a speech, it’s about getting his team to seize the fact tha Altanta lost and they could gain a game on them to move up with so few games to go.

I fault Doc for keeping Perkins in the game when he was busy pump faking under the rim against the Knicks! Glen Davis was playing much better tonite. Also, he needed to get Rondo to be more assertive on offense. So it was about strategy with me not rah rah speeches.

Trust me. D’Antoni is not a bad coach because he doesn’t give rah rah speeches. Our coach is bad because he can’t coach and he surely can’t develop any of these young players on this team.

He is still stubborn not to give a foul when we’re up by 3 at the end of the game.

  • x-man

LOL. I was laughing my butt off watching Perkins pump fake under the rim! Did he not get see or get the scouting report on our team. No one pump fakes against Gary Coleman and Tom Cruise! Maybe he was just bowing to them! lol

I cant’ believe Doc didn’t take him out of the game because rondo was pissed with him for messing up his assist total! Who knows maybe Perkins finally saw a 7 footer on our team that came near the paint!

  • x-man

Yeah you’re right, our coach is trying to make DVJ look like a genius with 30 wins. I hate this coach! lol

  • x-man

Is that the day we get 30 wins and DVJ go crazy? My badd. DVJ is crazy everyday!

  • chubby

    @B&E
Are you cutting and pasting your responses from your previous posts??? Or, God forbid, plagiarize from the others?

With 5 games to go who gives a fuck who plays? This discussion is never ending, so cut the crap and post something smart.
I’m tired of self-proclaimed coaches, with the responses like:
Mike D’Antoni doesn’t know how to coach period.

BluEandOrange, with a response like this you are an idiot, period.

Would like to see your basketball related resume. NBA2K10 most improved player doesn’t count, btw.

  • BigDaddybluesman

Well there you have it, our championship team. The final piece was added with the addition of an actual, real NBA 7 foot center…wow, from the D league yet, Walsh is amazing.

No need for any max contract, just sign this guy and every other bottom basement player to the roster and start Duhon, Chandler, Gallo, Lee and Barron. There ya go….saves Dolan a ton of cash and we have a team that D’assholi can finally call his own.

My question is why didn’t we sign this guy earlier and what took D’ass so long to realize Dlee was not a center? All this time he swore Dlee was OK at the C position and now all of a sudden he’s not and out of desperation we sign a D leaguer. To top it off his first game he has a career night…LMAO. Talk about teasing the fans…….it’s like taking home the queen of the dance only to find out she was a he at one time…LOL.

You really have to question the Celtics and their ability to be consistent. I can’t see them getting past the first or second round this year unless they really step it up. This was NOT the same team I saw 2 seasons ago. It’s not only their individual play that has slipped because of age and injury it’s their team play that has degraded.

  • chubby

After reading this blog for a while may I ask you:
Who do you want to be our next coach? Who is available to elevate this team into championship level?

    Key words: Available, elevate, championship.

  • RR

I can see hating if the Knicks played bad tonight but they played really good. Also yes they should have signed Barron a long time ago but some of these post are crazy:

-MD does not allow his young players to develop. Duhon should not take Douglas or Gallo’s mins. Wrong!
They have both been playing over 30mins a game. TD is getting more mins than Duhon so who cares who starts plus Duhon is taking T Mac’s mins.

    - MD is an idiot for playing Al Harrington! OK
Before DW signed Barron the team had 3 guys who were 6-9 or taller on the active roster. Lets see lets put Walker who is 6-6 at the 4 or 5 when Gallo or Lee needs a sub.

    - Lets save the best for last:
Lee does not deserve to be an allstar even though he leads all C’s in ppg, assist and 2nd in rebounds. Stern should have selected Ellis who is a guard from the Western confrence over Lee.

    WOW!!!!

  • BiggieSmalls

genius for predicting 30 wins when the season was 85% over?
    no.

  • DMAT89

In D’Antoni’s defense, they asked in postgame why gallo sat for 7 mins or so in 4th and he said he had been going at it pretty hard with the celts bigs and he wanted him fresh for the last few minutes…but i believe he said he was sitting him til then as long as the knicks kept it close, which they did…if celts got on a run i Imagine he would of came in.

I hope Barron starts at C the rest of the season, the morons on here who continue to try an bash lee are just flat out dumb…Lee had good numbers tonight..and that was with him missing about 4 wide open 15 fters which he normally knocks down with his eyes closed…if those go in as he normally does he puts up 18 to 20 with 11 rebs, 6 asts or w/e and so on….not to mention his help D was very good…I was shocked but look at the difference when hes not taking on guys twice his size….

Gallo was great and I think we can all agree he probably wouldnt of scored 31 if t-mac and harrington were playing because they wouldnt of gotten him the ball like the others did….and as far as people seeing the effort and stuff…..thats what happens when everyone in the rotation has a legit shot at being back next year….douglas, walker, giddens(somewhat), gallo, lee, and to some extent barron, s-rod, and duhon….

  • bmathews77

See – keep that chucker Al Harrington out of games and the younger Knicks like Gallinari have a good game. Harrington ruins the flow of the offense!!!!
I liked the lineup the Knicks went with yesterday and it payed off. Earl Barron has impressed me with the two games he has played…there’s still a few more games to really evaluate him completely but I can see him being a cheap contract to bring in for next season.

  • LBJ2010

The immortal Frank Williams wore it.

Gallo is the REAL DEAL. Does he have any fear?

I think Gallo is the perfect hybrid of the Euro stars that have preceeded him, specifically Shrempf, Toni Kukoc and Dirk.

With one season under his belt, I anticipate huge advancements in his game next year. His assists should get up to about 2.5 to 3 a game as he drives the lane more and draws help defenders.

To get the best out of the young Italian stallion, we just need to find a veteran star for Gallo to hitch his wagon to…

  • HaS

“Lee leads ALL NBA centers in PPG AND APG!”

He leads them in points allowed in the paint too lol.

Seriously though, Bogut or Josh Smith should have made it ahead of him. Stern looked out for the Knicks and took pity on them. It is what it is.

  • HaS

“Coaches do not motivate in the NBA.Players have to be self motivated, or motivated by player leaders.
Do you think P. Jackson is there giving pep talks, or is it Jordan, Shaq or Kobe?”

Pat Riley is known as a great “motivator”.

Poppovich is known for his “pep talks”.

Phil hands out books and does exercises to build a chemistry between his players.

  • HaS

“I think Gallo is the perfect hybrid of the Euro stars that have preceeded him, specifically Shrempf, Toni Kukoc and Dirk.”

    *blank stare*

  • BluEandOrange

    Wow, you are funny. /sarcasm

  • BluEandOrange

Still using that excuse? Lee isn’t a center! Get that through your brain.

As seen today, with Barron playing major minutes guarding the 5, Lee only had 13 and 11.

  • BluEandOrange

First, Lee is not a center, just as Chuck Hayes is not a center. He is merely trying to fill in the position since the Knicks do not have a legitimate sized player to handle that role on a starting basis.

  • Mucha

    Why not.

    Dirk > Schrempf > Kukoc

If Gallo’s a Nowitzki, Schrempf and Kukoc hybrid then he’ll probably reach Schrempf’s level – which is a fair prediction. I like the fact that Gallinari took those turnaround jumpshots a la Nowitzki (when there’s a mismatch) yesterday btw.

  • x-man

No one can elevate this current team to a championship and that is not what is being debated. We are talking about having a coach that does the simple things like developing our youth and putting forth progress on our tam playing better defense and smarter b-ball.

We don’t have the team to get massive wins now but we should be getting better and putting pieces in place so that when we get a star, it will go a longer war.

We have mentioned many coaches here so I’ll not repeat that. I’d take Van Gundy for starters.

  • RR

He is listed as a center on the roster & on his player profile. He made the allstar team as a center so on this team he is a center.

We all know he should be playing the 4 but they had no choice but to play him at the 5 until now. Why do people want to make comments that are completely wrong? Lee has been the starting center for over 70 games this year.

  • BluEandOrange

So if the Knicks play Duhon at center that makes him a center. Stop making ludicrious comments.
