D’Antoni: Knicks Would Be at Top 4 Team with James

by Tommy Dee on April 13th, 2010 at 1:06 pm

Via NY Post:

“…Turning serious, D’Antoni said superstars such as James should not be flustered by the specter of nine straight losing Knick seasons.

“I think we start 0-0 like everybody else,” he said. “I don’t think our record carries over.

“When you ask [the free agents] when they come in, and they’ll say, yeah, well they didn’t have me,” D’Antoni added. “And it’s true. I’m not worried about that.”

D’Antoni privately has told confidants had James been on their roster the last two seasons, the Knicks would have been a top-four playoff team.

However, both James and Dwyane Wade have said being on a winner is the major factor in their respective decisions. Sunday at the Garden, Wade said, “Mostly it is about winning. Wins are how you are remembered more so than individuals. You want to make sure you are surrounded by guys that have the mentality to win…”

This is different in terms of Lebron posts. This is a quote from the coach. I had to post this one.

I’ve been saying this for a while now. This roster, to me, means very little in terms of a decision excluding the young core. Now the team has flexibility to build. Yes, it’s a lot to ask from a player who currently sits atop the standings, but I still haven’t had anyone convince me that Cleveland is a better destination, roster-wise, over the next 3-5 years and beyond. Put James on this roster and it would be a top 4 seed in my opinion, and if this is accurate D’Antoni feels the same way.

So I ask you:

With James on the Knicks, would they be a top 4 Eastern Conference Team?

Thats a no brainer lol if lebron was on the nets they would be a top 4 team in the east. Ppl should give the coach a break the evaluation starts July 1. Which coach would have won with this roster? Phil Jackson? Van gundy? Pat Riley? Maybe they would have one a plus or minus 5 games but listening to walsh yesterday on 1050 on the knicks pregame show he stated that he told dantoni that the roster won’t be settled for 2 yrs. If the roster won’t be settled in 2 yrs why judge the coach for those two years?

On a different note, what u guys think of the following moves not saying it will happen. Knicks trade curry and 2 first round picks and 2 second round picks and take back okefor along with cp3. Then sign bosh and lee and a very good defending 2 gaurd brewer? The rotaion would be bosh lee gallo brewer cp3 bench td Chandler okefor walker as the rotation thoughts???

“You want to make sure you are surrounded by guys that have the mentality to win…” Based on this comment by Wade, I think he and (especially) Lebron take a wait-and-see approach this summer. They’ll evaluate the current roster of their potential destinations and then make a decision. I do not think Lebron signs on July 1st, whether it be with Clev or NY. This is just my opinion. I think Wade re-signing with the Heat is much more certain than Lebron re-signing, although both of them re-signing seems like the odds-on favorite at the moment.

Top 4 in the east? Or the league? No way would they be top 4 in the league (without another addition or two also)

  • Jack D

Would be great, but New Orleans won’t give up CP3 just to dump salary. Plus Okafor isn’t like Curry. Sure he isn’t worth 10-12 mil, but he could actually play.
And are we even allowed to trade another 1st rounder? Your can’t trade 1st round picks 2 years in a row, right?

  • grahambo86

    In the East.

  • grahambo86

CP3 isn’t going anywhere. I am not sure where all this CP3 trade talk started but the Hornets must be crazy to give him up. They will bring in somebody like Avery Johnson and that will make CP3 stronger, IMO.

I think LBJ would change our win total but DW would have to bring in some more support players to make that happen. We would need a tall (6’10 and above) frontline of players as starters and on the bench. Does LBJ make Gallo a power forward or a player coming off the bench?

DW must look at Orlando and like chess pieces match player for player as far as playing defense against them.

DW would definitely need spot up shooters( I think Gallo and TD can fit that bill) for LBJ to kick too as much as he is doubled when driving.

If dont get LBJ, I still think DW should try to pose matchup problems, imagine two 6’7 guards starting Livingston and Joe Johnson. I still think a BIG who you can dump off to in the paint and who commands double teaming would be nice but I dont think Mike likes that. If he is double he can kick out to shooters.

I watched Blatche last night he seems to be able to see other players when Barron has trouble catching the pill. I like Barron though.

ATTENTION ! I have something to post that I will put up in about 15 mins in reguards to a topic Tommy didn’t wanna touch in reguards to if the knicks have the best possible offer for NO in CP3 trade. There is something people are overlooking that works very well for the knicks chances. I will break it down number by number and you will be surprised to see that only Miami by far comes close to a better package.

“D’Antoni privately has told confidants had James been on their roster the last two seasons, the Knicks would have been a top-four playoff teams…”

    Doesn’t say east.

  • vinrummy

    “No brainer” …exactly right.

If I was D. Walsh/M. D’Antoni, if I could get LeBron to sign on with the Knicks, I’d rather spend ther remaining cap space on multiple good players.

LeBron has shown that he can legitimately *make his teammates better* …. even now, when his 2nd best teammate is either Mo Williams or Anderson Varejao and they’re working on back-to-back 60+ win seasons, I know that LBJ can singlehandedly transform a team. He doesn’t need to play with another superstar (frankly, I think another stud player might work against LeBron).

If he came to the Knicks it would be no different. In years 1 and 2, the Knicks would be probably a #3 or #4 seed (at worst #5 I think) and he’ll adjust to his teammates and they’ll adjust to him. By year #3 it’ll be 60+ wins and legitimately contending for the the NBA title (rather than Eastern Conference finals or something).

Just give him some athletic big men who can finish and shoot a little bit, and a couple of sharpshooters in the backcourt.

Any team with Lebron on it is a top 4 team in their conference. Its as simple as that. How many wins do the Cavs have without Lebron-30? maybe? Have they won since Lebron has been sitting out?

It really comes down to whether or not Lebron feels he can win a championship with the Cavs. While the Cavs have brought in a lot of talent that makes it unlikely that he will leave, at the same time if he fails to win yet again he will have to seriously consider leaving a team that does not have a bright future at all.

So, I guess I root for an upset in the 1st or 2nd round. Hopefully Mo Williams will completely fall apart again and Jamison wont’ play too well.

  • vinrummy

By not specifying “east” it’s D’Antoni’s typical slick way of being able to weasel out of that statement later on.

  • HaS

The next 1st round pick the Knicks can trade is 2014′s. Classic.

  • Mucha

    No doubt.

  • TG

Like hiding behind ‘he told his friends’.

This is the guy who pronounced Gallo ‘best shot ever’ or something.

Interesting that Tommy added the ‘east’ bit though.

  • HaS

SMH at the sneaky LeBron post after Tommy specifically said no more Lebron posts. Has it even been a week? LOL

  • Jack D

We have back-to-back 2nd round picks. Is it worth it to target a late 1st rounder? I know Memphis has 2 late 1st’s (26 and 29). What are our options/Who we should target, etc.

  • dino of syracuse

If no LeBron, then Knicks should sign the Red Panda! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIECdLtVTwA

  • DVJ

When he comes to NY to visit, Donnie should have A-Rod, Jeter, Mo, Posada and Tex woo him. Then get some of those Wall Street fat cats to show him what he can really do with his empire if he were based in NY. Let the movie star celebs that frequent the Garden like Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld, a few of the Sopranos, Spike, Mayor Bloomberg and whoever else wants to be in on it show him a good time. Then wrap it up with dinner while placing Lebrons contract in front of him and then placing another contract right next to it letting him know that he can pick anybody from the free agent class to come play with him.
That’s all Donnie can do. If Lebron wants the world and feels greedy than he’ll sign. If he wants to be loyal and if he is truly a Ohio kid then he’ll stay in Cleveland. I’m not worried about any other team in the league because they don’t have anything we don’t.
Even though I wonder why nobody talks about Miami having the most cap space if Wade does actually opt out and bolts town.

  • NYKat

Pro-Lebron to NY posts will always find their way on here

  • Knicks4life

No. Because a 1st rounder will eat up cap space.

  • Knicks4life

“I’m not worried about any other team in the league because they don’t have anything we don’t.”

Every other team has their draft picks for one.

But putting that aside, Miami can offer Wade, LAC Baron Davis and Blake Griffen, Nets maybe John Wall (but they are still the Nets).

As crazy as it sounds, we talk about bringing LBJ and Wade to NY, Miami could just straight up do it and still have Beasely and this years draft pick. Crazy.

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

she is nasty with them bowls

  • Jack D

    i was thinking that too

  • fauci933

Maybe people would actually go to the games in Miami if that happened. Beasley’s not doing anything in Miami anyway, Gallo looks way more promising than Beasley.

Blake Griffin and Baron Davis is a horrible offering and the Clips have no shot at LBJ or Wade, or any other close to top tier FA. Baron is getting old, and Blake Griffin hasn’t played a minute of NBA basketball yet.

  • dino of syracuse

And just think of all the good dishing and swishing she would provide!

  • gbaked

weasel out of a comment he made about a completely hypothetical situation?

    you guys are crazy.

  • gbaked

    and furthermore

“D’Antoni privately has told confidants had James been on their roster the last two seasons, the Knicks would have been a top-four playoff team.”

    privately told confidants…

so its not even a quote.

  • gbaked

    its not a direct quote.

and nobody talks about being a top 4 overall team. There is no direct ranking. you think he was talking about ESPN power rankings or something?

  • oscar f

I put the CP3 info on the next article .

  • gbaked

i dont think LBJ is too worried about 1 late first round draft pick.

  • itzyung1

He said Gallo is the best Shooter he has coached.. I remeber that.

  • Mucha

    LMAO

  • Hydr0

it’s been two days since tommy said that he wouldn’t post about lebron to the knicks until the playoffs are over lol
