Draft Workouts Tomorrow

by Tommy Dee on May 6th, 2010 at 4:24 pm

Jimmer Fredette

Tommy says, “Athleticism is a factor when judging a prospect, especially at 6’2, but I think Fredette’s skill set can translate at the NBA level. I mean, the guy went for 30 or more 8 times and 45 plus, twice and never took more that 26 shots in one game. I like that he gets to the line as well. Will he stay in the draft is the question. Could use another year.”

Draftexpress on Fredette- “Via Twitter 4-22″Jimmer Fredette to NBA GMs: No need to spend time evaluating me, I’m going back to BYU http://bit.ly/bjfGdF (that’s message I got at least)

Though there are aspects of his game that remain question marks from an NBA perspective, there are others that have talent-evaluators enamored with his game. Fredette has improved his jump shooting ability markedly since his freshman year, and now sits as one of the best shooters in our database. A tremendous catch and shoot threat who has also improved his ability to hit shots off the dribble, Fredette can certainly help a team on any level with his ability to stretch the floor. His efficiency from the line is a bonus as well, as he’s a valuable asset in late game situations.

Aside from his merits as a shooter, Fredette has improved his efficiency as a passer as well. Though his usage has risen markedly from last season, Fredette’s assist to turnover ratio has grown from 1.59 last season to 1.84 this season. Given his tremendous basketball IQ, it will be interesting to see how Fredette responds to a diminished role on the next level. He’s a solid passer, but his ability to set his teammates up and play low-mistake basketball will only help his cause as he carves out a niche for himself early in his career.

Bobby Maze
Tommy Says: “A definite scoring guard, Maze had an up and down career with Tennessee after transferring in. Not a great shooter by any stretch, Maze is a wonderful end to end talent who somehow never averaged over 25 minutes per game or double digit points. Really don’t know where he translates at the next level.

Below paragraph is probably the more appropiate place for this and not in the David Lee section

Mikhail Torrance’s big guard size – with Rodney Stuckey, Andre Miller, Russell Westbrook physicality. He clearly projects into versatile NBA lead guard, the kind of big guard who can do small guard things, and who can defend smaller and even bigger guards. He played in the conference with John Wall, so he is just now being appreciated for all he can do. He has climbed past many bigger names, and some scouts are shocked at just how good he is.

We definitely also need to find a slasher guard 6’7, a scorer, a 3-pt threat and can get to the foul line..more importantly plays defense. I dont know if Ill Will’s handle is right for a shooting guard

  • bob go knicks

i read where he turns the ball over wayyyy too much

  • oscar f

Tommy I don’t understand why you show this Fredette guy if his twitter said that his returning to school. He does seem like a nice prospect. He could be your best friend if you get double teamed a lot. Then you got the other guy who don’t seem too impressed with. BTW when are you going to give your opinion on Jerome Randle , I really would like to know what you think of him as a prospect and option for the knicks in the second round.

  • bbrody1

i dont know how i feel about drafting a 2guard

this year is deep with bigmen, i think we’ll have a choice of 2 or 3 quality C’s or PF/C’s and potentially someone we thought would go a little higher

I really like jerome randle, his handles and quickness are nasty – if anything he’ll prove to an excellent backup pg and maybe even a good starter

the knicks need a pg and a center, we have two picks – unless there aren’t any decent centers or pg’s left (im afraid that there might not be since the draft isn’t deep for pg’s this year) i don’t think we should be drafting a sg/sf when our current roster is a guard, two guard/forwards and a forward

if we get another pick i’m all for it, but we can also trade/sign-n-trade for players drafted

  • bbrody1

I think that since the draft is before FA you have to play the best case scenarios – lebron/wade plus a F like amare/bosh

    step 1:
    draft randle/pittman

    step 2:
    bron/bosh

    step3:
offer NO a deal that just wouldn’t make sense for them to refuse
    curry/td/chandler for collison/okafor

    step4:
sign a few of the following, good cheap role players
morrow, reddick, amir johnson, barron, Mahinmi

    Potential Roster:
    collison – randle
lbj – morrow (or jj reddick)
    gallo – walker
bosh – amir johnson-mid level exception (or Ian Mahinmi)
    okafor – barron, pittman

    collison – 1.3
    randle – 1
    lbj – 16
    gallo – 3.3
    bosh – 16
    morrow – 3 mil
    johnson – 5.5 (mid-level exception)
    barron – 1
    pittman – 1
    okafor – 11.5
    walker – .9

    total = 60.5 – 5.5mle = under cap

depending on whether u’d rather have reddick/mahinmi or johnson/morrow

This team is potentially a championship team. It shoots the three ball, it plays defense, it grabs rebounds, its young, fast and deep.

  • oscar f

The only sg that are really worth anything will be lottery picks like turner. It will be funny if the knicks don’t get atleast 1 big in this draft. I really see them going with Pittman and/or Brackins. That Randle kid is pretty good , I agree he will atleast be a servicable back up. Im really surprised Tommy didn’t do a break down on him instead a couple weeks back he gave us a highlight with some overseas dude that was falling all over the place and throwing passes out of bounds. Good work lol.

  • oscar f

Thats a cool plan except you cant use the MLE and I think the cap is expected to be like 55mil so the bench you have is impossible . It’s good to dream though.

  • bbrody1

    cap projected at 56.1

    y no mle?

  • oscar f

You have to be over the cap to use it .

  • bbrody1

    oooo

so just scrap johnson and sign mahinmi or a min contract – still works

  • Mal

I always say go to your war room and look at the top teams w/championship capabilities in both divisions prior to the draft and then add pieces to our Knicks by trying to match or surpass player for player on those top teams.

EXAMPLE: Bynum + Gasol, we try to counter w/ Kaman + Amare or Blatche + Mahinmi. D Williams, we try to counter w/CP3, Collison, G Arenas,or M Ellis I know I know easier said than done.

  • LB2NYplz

exactly what i was thinking as a best case scenario
except the knicks dont have the mle and reddick would be a perfect fit but hell command 4 to 6 million

  • HaS

Man, I hope the Knicks get lucky in the draft.

They sure haven’t been smart/good at drafting lately, but they say it is better to be lucky than good so there’s still hope.

Then again we haven’t been very lucky either.

    *sigh*

  • HaS

Keep THIS stuff coming Tommy, I’m very interested in your eye for undiscovered talent. Hope you’re in Walsh’s ear and I hope he’s gotten that miscommunication and “yes-man” situation with his scouting department figured out this year.

  • HaS

That’s a great “best case” scenario, Reddick would turn into Kapono under this “coach”.

He’s a scrappy defender and a hustle player along with being a pretty good sharpshooter. I doubt _’antoni brings that out of him in a run and gun system imho.

  • CircleLimit4

I’m telling you. Milos Teodosic, and we don’t even need to draft him.

  • CircleLimit4

He faded at the end of the year but I think Jeremy Lin should get a workout, as well as Randle.

As far as bigs, Brackins and Parakhouski get my vote. Garcia should get a look too.

  • bbrody1

yea thats y had the combos of reddick/mahinmi or johnson/morrow pairing the cheaper g with more expensive f and viceversa…

although with no mle my “best case scenario” would have to go with mahinmi/morrow to make it fit under cap

although if u draft pittman and sing barron you can get away without having a true backup PF since you can rotate gallo at PF for some minutes a game and rotate Bosh at center for some minutes.

i would love reddick or morrow on the knicks to go with gallo and walker on the perimeter

with bosh and bron drawing double teams and having sharpshooters u become a team like orlando (which i think is the best team in the league)

  • young hova

Also max deals start at 16.8 I believe so that is another 1.6 you need to cut off your roster and that is not a trade NO couldn’t refuse, I’m pretty sure they would refuse that

  • bbrody1

i dont see new orleans refusing a deal that lets them shed okafors contract, keep paul/west, while also getting someone to replace mo-pete/peja for cheap (which would essentially allow them to shop peja’s expiring contract)

max depends on what the cap actually is – if cap is 56 then yea is 16.8 – was just using rough number we obviously don’t know how much any free agent is going to sign for in the future – I have no idea how much morrow is going to receive in free agency but i know hes worth a look as a 3-point specialist that tends to grab rebounds

  • Gusurena

bbrody1: This is the best, well thoght off scenario I’ve read from a fan. I like it top to bottom. I hope most of it happens.

  • Its The Kid

Not understanding why the Knicks should make any trade that involves them taking a bad contract back from a team that has financial problems and giving them financial relief and young players. If we take Okafor’s contract they should throw in Collison as far as I’m concerned. Knick fans too often construct trades from us having a position of disadvantage. While we give up Jordan Hill, swap a pick, and give up another pick (only protected if its a #1) to get rid of Jared Jeffries. We want to give up Chandler and TD for a contract that is way worse for an underachieving, always injured, and overpaid player and a possible good pg. I like Collison but not enough to trade for Okafor and give up two solid players to get him.

They should take Curry, give us Okafor and Collison, and thank us.

  • blackwood

Brackins like Lee can score but no defense, I love garcia great talent but lazy on dee and low basketball IQ,

Randle & Pittman meet what is needed, u pair mahinmi & Pittman at center and ether can plat the PF if you want to play them at the same time. You S&T Lee to GS for Wright,Azubuike & ether Radmanovic or Turiaf. Build the team this should be step one!

  • blackwood

Look at Jameer Nelson kill the hawks and tell me Randle cant be that or more!!

  • ds2488

Damn, is Jamal Crawford a chucker or what? They need him to score, but not at the expense of everyone else on the team. That was like 5 straight possessions where it was just the whole team watching Crawford shoot. He didn’t make one of those either. He’s got to pass more.

  • blackwood

tunnel vision he only thinks score the funny thing he will never drive when he needs 2!

  • x-man

Yep and All NBAer 3 team Joe Johnson just seem to disappear in games as usual. He has 19 pts but he’s not the star that some like to bill him as.

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

    craw is a sad case
the kid has all the tools to be a very good player but does so much weak shit
he doesn’t have the mental tools to go with his physical gifts..

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

this is how much better joeJ is to craw
craw is about 6.5 an joeJ is about 7.5

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

an nelson is garbage the hawks are sad..

  • fauci933

Haha Nelson is garbage? Damn you are hard to please. Who in this league doesn’t suck and isn’t a bitch? Anyone?

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

i mean he isn’t totally garbage he has good games every season just like alot of players.

let me think about who doesn’t suck it’s a very short list………………….

  • JeffM729

I would think that Collison is pretty much untouchable with CP3 being a possible free agent in a few years. Why the NO would take a stiff (Curry), a gimp (Chandler), and a maybe (TD) for a starting NBA center and PG is beyond me.

I like your plan, but doubt that NO will see this as a can’t refuse.

Plus why would NO make that trade?

  • bob go knicks

Collison doesnt get paid that much, there is no reason that they would want to get rid of him

  • Big Blue St3

Because the team is hemorrhaging money in a small market and West and Thornton are both due raises in the next year or two. Plus they have a lottery pick in a draft where 10 of the 14 top players are big men. Even if the balls drop in line they will have a shot at guys like Whiteside, Monroe or Orton to replace Okafor on a rookie contract. Even with Shinn selling off his shares doesn’t change the fact that the Hornets are in a bad market and are essentially a money pit. I posted this same idea a few days ago with the Bosh and James additions and the Collison / Okafor trade. Its completely feasible. NO is paying way into the luxury tax for a team that can’t make the playoffs (sound familiar?) they need to jettison some bad contracts, this is still a business. Okafor is obviously overpaid but he provides something the Knicks need desperately and if we get a pg that could be part of a young core that would be sick even at the cost of Ill Will. You think that wouldn’t be an easy sell to Lebron?

    Collison-23
    LBJ-26
    Gallo-22
    Bosh-26
    Okafor-28

You want a chance at a dynasty? The 3 guys that are over 25 are well established in the nba and you have 2 guys under 25 that are good still developing and both have loads of upside. Then next year you have the MLE to add to the bench. And even if Lebron doesn’t sign get Gay and see what happens, if you swap Gay for LBJ that teams probably a 5 seed but would be very dangerous. Either way the team is young, long and hungry.

  • Big Blue St3

It’s not about getting rid of Collison it’s getting rid of Okafor and there’s a price for that. Even with the old majority owner selling his shares the team is still in the hole over the next few years

  • HaS

    Monta Ellis is basura.
