Raja Bell: Miami is My First Choice

by Tommy Dee on May 11th, 2010 at 10:43 am

Via Miami Herald-

“…Raja Bell, a former Florida International standout and respected perimeter defensive stopper, marked his spot among those who will be lobbying Riley this summer. Bell, whose best days came during his stint as Phoenix’s supposed Kobe stopper a few years ago, has bounced around in recent seasons. He last was with Golden State after he was dealt by Charlotte last season.

But Bell, who sustained a season-ending wrist injury, is healthy how and hoping to acquire a spot with the Heat. To that extent, he wants to follow in the footsteps of former FIU teammate Carlos Arroyo, who latched on with the Heat last season and finished the year as the starting point guard.

Bell took to the sports talk radio airwaves Monday, when he appeared on The Jorge Sedano Show on 790 The Ticket, and openly flirted with the Heat.

“Miami is my first choice,” said Bell, an unrestricted free agent who spent the latter part of the season attending several Heat games after he was released by the Warriors. “Pat (Riley), if you can use my services, give me a call. I’m right around the corner, 36th and Biscayne, give me a call…”

Obviously, more fodder for D’Antoni detractors. I think Bell is the type of player the Knicks desperately need. Bell’s no fool, this is a way of driving up his market value, but it sounds like he may take the hometown discount with the Heat.

  • HaS

Forget the USA Basketball team, he can’t even lure his former players. Not good.

i’m suprised the frank isola article isn’t posted…

as for bell let him go to mia
he’s good at getting kobe mad that’s all..

  • BASEline LANEdrive

ehhh… Bell going to Miami could be a good thing. I don’t think Miami could afford to pay Wade, another top flight free agent AND Raja Bell (unless bell takes the veteran minimum or something).. so i would say chances they get bell are slim, and if they do, could be better for us.

i personally haven’t even given up on the idea of signing LBJ and Bosh. Yeah, call me an optimist but it’s only be unsubstantial press writings leading people to think Lebron is NOT coming to NY. there’s been nothing definite to say that he wouldn’t go to NY.. and I still hold firm that Lebron would want his name in the bright lights of one of the biggest cities.

These top free agents need to realize… right now you gotta compete with the Magic and the Lakers. The Cavs don’t have it. I don’t see them winning. They may be better than the Knicks now, but NY has potential. We sign Bron and Bosh (or as my brother calls it “Lebrosh”) and have em play alongside Gallo hittin’ them threes, it’s a strong strong team right there.. could cement our dominance for 5+ years…

  • Knicks4life

I seriously doubt Bell gets big or even moderate money anywhere. Miami could and should sign him on the cheap. He is actually a perfect fit there. Especially if D. Wade goes to Chicago or NY (doubtful) they will have to regroup there in a hurry.

  • x-man

Isn’t it ironic that Bell didn’t list the Knicks and his former coach as a 1st choice?

Did you watch the Magic-Hawks scrimmage last night and hear the announcers say that PHX has learned to win with their defense now when they couldn’t and wouldn’t do it in the past years?

Who do you think they were referring to? You have a minute to win it! Your game begins in 3-2-1……. lol

  • http://www.reeltalkblog.com Shakespeare

i doubt bell demands any more than 3-4mill…the guy hasn’t played in almost 2yrs….and who knows what type of player he’s gonna be when he comes back…

i think he’d be a great mentor wilson chandler, but i wouldn’t lose any sleep if he goes to miami…..this is raja bell we’re talkin bout…lol….

  • x-man

Yep, Riley will sign him for a 2 waterpark tickets and subscription to the mickey mouse club. Bell has NO leverage and that is why it’s comical that he doesn’t list his former coach and ours truly as a 1st choice.

@TommyDeeTKB Sean Foley’s knowledge of the new ball flight laws could help Tiger immensely. I haven’t seen proof Haney knows Trackman logic.

every player that played for danni boy knows his system is garbage an his stubborness for not hiring a defense coach thats why none of his former players are dying to be a knick

ofcourse they are not going to comeout an say well i like his offense but he never talks defense.

lmao@ signing danni boy as a recruiting TOOL=your a fool for thinking that…

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

great mentor as in teaching will how to get kobe mad?lmao…

  • Boots

Miami is more attractive than you guys want to believe.

Wade isn’t leaving; there’s a good chance that Bosh goes there as he has said that he is a warm weather guy. That will put the fannies back in the seats.

Florida has no state income tax, a boon after Bosh’s paying Canada’s taxes.

It is an international, multi-cultural city with great clubs, and many wealthy young people to party with.

I spent the winter in southwest Florida and went over to Miami regularly to meet up with friends. It is a fun place 24/7 year-around.

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

multi cultural i don’t think so unless it has changed since 2004
it’s basically 50% cubans about 30% hatians an u can fill in the rest.

miami is the most overrated city in america
i’m not a beach or warm weather guy
i’m a spring fall an winter guy..

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

na riley can sign him for first class round trip tickets for him an his fam back to st croix

  • http://www.reeltalkblog.com Shakespeare

LOL, NOW IF THERE WAS ONLY SUM1 THAT COULD GET ILL WILL MADD……lol, that guy shows noooo emotion, if i didn’t know any better, i would think this guy is blowing sum purp before every game…lol…

  • vinrummy

Can’t get caught up in what Raja Bell of all people starts saying right now. I respect the hell out of the way he plays, and feel he’d make a good addition to any team he played for…..but as far as I’m concerned he’s like way down on the Knicks’ offseason priority list.

He only becomes a relevant signing for the Knicks IF they can sign/trade for one of the league’s elite players and fill out the roster with some other frontline talent.

And to bring up Mike D’Antoni, I don’t the guy has any really pull on free agents except for guys who see playing in D’Antoni’s system as a way to average a career high in scoring–i.e. not the type of guys I’d want to bring on to a team.

Lotta rich Cubans, South Americans, Europeans depending on where you’re hanging.

Until the Euro crisis the last several months, the dollar has been weak and the USA has been a good place to vacation and to invest. Lots of money in South Florida. Saw a lot more Bentley convertibles and Rolls Corniches down there than I’ve ever seen in the Hamptons and I spend a chunk of time out there every summer. Jags are the condo car that people give to their company to drive when visiting.

Why do you think the double-decker tour buses in NYC have been filled with Europeans the last couple of years? Those blond blue-eyed heads sticking up ain’t from Kansas.

  • BobbyFromBK

Again, the perception that D’Antoni is a player’s coach and that players will be lining up to play for him is bogus. Word has gotten around about how he treated Nate, Larry, Eddy, Steph…etc and the fact that one of his favorite players, Bell, wants no part of him, is extremely telling.

This year coming up will be D’Antoni’s worst and last. Isola has a great article about how the players laughed when asked about MD coaching defense and said he didn’t even scout opposing teams. He doesn’t even know how to prepare for games.

    He’s a joke.

  • Jack D

“and the fact that one of his favorite players, Bell, wants no part of him, is extremely telling”

Where does it say that Bell wants no part of MD? That’s just an assumption. He simply said that Miami was his FIRST choice.

  • x-man

LMAO! Anyone who played organized b-ball should be able to see this period! I’m sure there will still be those that says to give this coach more years and better players!

The Spurs are quite upset that D’Antoni’s criticism is rising in the East instead of his teams falling in the West!

  • x-man

I hear ya Boots but Bell should wanna play for his former coach here in NY. That way he could easily be in Miami for the spring-summer starting April of each year.

Maybe Bell knows that he ait ever gonna win a thing under our coach!

  • http://www.reeltalkblog.com Shakespeare

HMMMMMMM, i was just thinking, if Lebron does come to NY and Bosh comes for the ride, and Amare stays in PHX, will D-WADE stay in Miami???? def a good question….will Boozer be enough to keep him from going home to Chicago???

  • http://www.reeltalkblog.com Shakespeare

YEA YOU CAN THANK THE “COCAINE COWBOYS” FOR ALL THAT DOWN IN MIA…from the clubs to the big boy whips…if u haven’t seen this movie….WOW, go to ur local bootlegger or netflix or blockbuster if u can find one…

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cocaine_Cowboys

and idk how often you go to miami, but i use to be out there every 2-3months, and if u go down on downtime (not spring break, memorial day, labor day) it is TOTALLLLLLY DEAD….only thing u see is bums sleeping in front of every restaurant and store…W/ A TAN…HAHAHAHAHA

  • Boots

Why should he show any interest in NY when he knows that after signing a couple of big names, there will be no money left for him. He, in his mind, has to believe that he is worth more than second round bench-filler money.

  • Boots

I was there every week or so March through April. I’m lucky that I have friends/business associates with money. Spend some time on their “island” or in some of the private communities or “country clubs”, or hit the big-time clubs late at night. Plenty of people of all ages, nationalities, and colors partying away. Bosh and other free agents would see this scene.

Try finding space for your private jet Thursday through Monday during the winter (B-Ball season). Private airfields are filled as far away as Naples. See the limos pouring into Miami every weekend.

Miami does suck if you are poor or middle class. Like I said, I’m lucky enough to have rich friends who like having a geezer around.

  • giantg

Bell was born in St Croix, loves the beach, works out in Miami in the off season, is an FIU alumn and according to the Miami Herald report appears to be staying in Miami now. Miami has Duane Wade. Miami has the most money to spend this off season. Leave it to the D’Antoni Harpies to infer the most negative assumptions…don’t you guys get tired of living in a blog lather on this topic..?

For those that think they know hoops, know defense, know the Knicks and definitely “know” D’Antoni is a bum coach on defense, check out this piece on the Knicks Fan Blog : http://www.knicksfan.net/?p=3707

  • giantg

    make that Dwayne Wade

  • kousinkar

Comparing the season team stats for Gentry’s and D’Antoni’s Suns is misleading, as the Suns were a completely different team post-all star break. Look at the Suns defensive stats post all-star break – their opp FG % was 43.9% during that span. In 9 of these games, they held opponents below 40%. THAT’s why people are saying the Suns are playing better defense then they ever have under D’Antoni.

    SOURCE: http://blog.oregonlive.com/behindblazersbeat/2010/04/forget_offense_the_phoenix_sun.html

And don’t just take my word for it, take Amare’s:
“I never had a clue on how fun defense really is because we never played it,” Stoudemire said. “It was just such a great offensive team. We never talked about defense.”

  • giantg

Is it more misleading than comparing less than 40 games of a playoff run vs the 4 full seasons of higher % winning hoops?
Or as misleading as giving a pass to the month preceding (Jan) when Gentry’s Suns gave up an avg of 112+ ppg?
Or comparing a coach who is using the system D’Antoni invented to the 60+ win seasons used to invent it?

You are using Amare as your witness? What we is he talking about? Shaun Marion and Raja Bell didn’t play D? C’mon…

In the end the new Sun’s story is likely to be the same as the old Sun’s story: they are going to get beaten by the team that will win the NBA championship, in this case LA.

For what it’s worth, for all the teary eyed reminiscing of Riley’s defense oriented Knicks. Those nitty gritty Knicks still couldn’t get past Chicago or Houston and never won an NBA title.

    Facts, sad facts.

  • http://www.reeltalkblog.com Shakespeare

EXACTLY BOOTS, U SAID IT, MARCH THRU APRIL….LOL, THAT’S SPRING BREAK…..i’ve been there every month of the yr…..after labor day, it’s TOTALLY DEAD…like a ghost town…
