TKB Radio Recap With Mike James

by Chris Alvino on May 11th, 2010 at 9:27 am

In case you missed TKB Radio last night with Anthony “Rice Balls”, check it out by clicking on the TKB Radio player to the right or simply go here.

On the show, Anthony had a special, PG Mike James formerly of the Washington Wizards and Houston Rockets, among other teams.  James, a New York native, is going to be a free agent this summer, in a summer during which Donnie Walsh will certainly be looking for backcourt help.

I have always liked Mike James’ fearlessness on the court and his ability to hit shots.  He has been in the playoffs during his career and he certainly has confidence.

In the interview (near the end of the show), Mike James talks about the turmoil that existed in Washington last year.  James talks about the Arenas debacle, as well as how Flip Saunders was not the right coach for the job.  Surprisingly, James also spoke about how he was told by the franchise to stay home for road trips.

A few tidbits that I liked included his quote on how he is always the first one in the gym and the last one to leave (he said that he was actually in the gym during the interview).  He also spoke about how he tries to be a contributor to the greater community.  Most importantly, he said that he would love to rock the blue and orange next season.

Perhaps Donnie Walsh will give James a call and give him a shot to revive his career in New York.  This team can use shooters, and James for his career has shot nearly 38% from beyond the arc.  James is more of a scorer than a distributor, and Rafer Alston, another NY native and veteran free agent point guard, is more of a distributor than a scorer.  Walsh will likely not go into this season without depth at the point, and perhaps he will give either James or Alston a call to try and fill out this roster.

hey I grew up watching Mike James play at John Jay, I am from Amityville as is Mike James…….i’ve attended Mike James Day at great neck park before…he was a park legend to us…watching him and Shab go at it was like watching knicks/pacers….

w/ that said, i dnt think he’s half the player he use to be…he doesn’t have half the athletic ability he once had (was in the college slam dunk contest when he was at Duquesne University), nor the passing ability to fit d’antoni’s system…

i’d take him as a 3rd pg, as a vet to mentor TD, but not to be givin the keys to the team…..and i’m good on skip, what he did to miami was reallllly immature, cause he wasn’t starting, he wanted to be released??? cmon son, u got to earn ur minutes, this isn’t the rucker, and Erik Spoelstra isn’t fat joe…lol…i’m good on him also….

    i’d rather re-sign s-rod, and go after parker or cp3….orrrrr rubio…

Fair points, but they have both played in the playoffs and both are journeyman veterans fighting for their careers. Is it not worth a shot to see how hungry they are? And like you said, they would be mainly for depth.

  • MrFurious

I think after last summer, where Donnie was unable to secure ANY depth at PG the Knicks need to be thinking depth at that position. To that end, bring these guys in, work em’ out…see if they got something left. It’s such an obvious hole and has been for several years.

i’d def give mike james a shot if we can’t make a move for a future pg in those other guys i mentioned…..i do agree he’d be great for td, very similar games….but not skip…i think he showed last yr, that he is nooo longer hungry and would like things just handed to him…..yea i know he was the starting pg in the finals last yr, but he’s not elite in the league like he thinks he is….

but def good read Chris……my town had soooo much talent growing up…good to see him and aj price make it out the hood…..

I don’t know, i just got a bad feeling were in for a off-season of Joe Johnson and re-signing David Lee, we trade chandler for a PG(collison maybe) and we trade curry for a C with money left on his deal(okafor, Biedrinis, Dalembert), I hope against hope we don’t go after Felton, don’t want him. felton/collison-pG, Joe Johnson-SG, Gallo at the 3, Lee at the 4, Okafor, Biedrinis, Dalmbert at the 5……ughhhh don’t like it, god i hope lebron losses to the celtics or magic, at least if he does he comes and takes bosh with him

I think if we don’t get at least 1 of the top 3 FAs (bron bron, wade, bosh) Donnie is gonna be prudent with his moves to try to get Carmelo after next season.

I’d honestly think about trying to acquire Johnson and Boozer or Lee spending as little as possible (if we can get em both for like $28 mil.. longshot, i know) , and see if we’d have enough to go after Melo next year.

    C – Earl Barron
    PF – Boozer or Lee
    SF – Gallo
    SG – Johnson
    PG – Douglas or S-Rod

with Chandler, Billy Walker and co. off the bench is good enough to make the playoffs. Let that tie us over til we can get Melo (if we can’t land a 1 or 1a free agent this year).

We need to understand the value of Eddy Curry’s contract and make sure it lands us something legitimate.. if not, hopefully our money is managed well where we can let Curry’s money fall off and make a push for another free agent in 2011.

Also, everyone keeps talking about Collison… is that even an option?

LOL this year everyone was against bringing in Jamaal Tinsley, Jason Williams, Jannero Pargo or Carlos Arroyo because they “sucked” or weren’t any good. Mike James didn’t even play (he doesn’t even show up on nba.com!) for one of the worst teams in the league this past season! Now next season he and Rafer Alston are options for next year to add “depth”, after tanking the last 2 years for the sake of cap space?

Just for the record, I was (and still am) for bringing in Tinsley, Williams, Pargo, lol they could have brought Chris Childs back in for a look for all I cared. I mean seriously, Duhon was the Knicks’ starting point guard with no true backup. For two years!

if i was donnie i would sign skip to my lou.
james isn’t what the knicks need at point….

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

    s-rod is garbage
the knicks are just going to waste money signing that guy..

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

    bring back marbury also

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

james had 1 good year in toronto for the contract he recieved after that he was an still is garbage thats why flip gave him no time.

  • Chris Alvino

    I prefer Skip too.

Remember, Skip helped lead the Magic to the NBA finals last year and got shafted when Jameer Nelson came back. That was Alston’s team, and IMO, Nelson put SVG in a bind and forced him to play him.

  • BiggieSmalls

now we are debating Mike James vs Rafer Alston?

My how we have lowered our sites.

  • BiggieSmalls

from the you’v got to be kidding me category..

Hahn reports that “Mike D’Antoni said the Phoenix Suns’ win over nemesis San Antonio proves his style of basketball works.”

Ask Mike how much Burn Robin Lopez and Dudley would have gotten on his roster.

  • BiggieSmalls

I Love how “Tim Duncan isnt what he use to be”

Unless it in convenient to show Lee putting up favorable numbers against him.

  • BiggieSmalls

the “Coach” may want to have a talk with his prodigy Alvin Gentry who — according to Amar’e — talks about defense “more than we ever did”..

Maybe the “coach” can implement some of the Gentry’s tactics like a big man rotation in the middle that isnt necessarily an outside shooter, a deeper bench and more emphasis on defense.

  • http://www.reeltalkblog.com Shakespeare

+1 agree 100%, he limited nash’s minutes alll season, to keep him healthy, and played 9-11 guys a night…unlike d’antoni that plays every game w/ a playoff rotation..lol…

  • HaS

The grandeur of this “coach’s” arrogance is inconceivable.
