Donnie Walsh Interview

by Tommy Dee on May 23rd, 2010 at 10:03 pm

Via Big C

Key points:

- Walsh recognizes how important the Celtics’ defense was in stopping Lebron, and mentions the important play of Rasheed Wallace (me too.)

- Interestingly, the interviewer didn’t realize Walsh couldn’t talk about “any one player”…because of tampering rules.

- On a top tier free agent coming to NY a “bad team” over the last 2 years. Walsh thinks the players understand 1 or 2 players “make a      huge difference.”  If you take the top player off the floor on any given night, most teams are pretty even.

- At this point, Walsh doesn’t know who will sign where.

- Walsh said he feels he can sign David Lee, two max players or 3 or 4 players. They have options.  fixed. (10:15).

- Walsh talks about Toney Douglas as if he’s a point guard.

- As we’ve talked about a million times, Walsh knows it’s his job to get D’Antoni defensive players who can score as well. He’s the one responsible for the roster and for providing the defenders to play for the coach.

  • DVJ

    Finally Tommy!!!!

    10:15 is very important.

  • Knicks4life

Based on the last thread I’m probably in the minority here but I would love to see Lee come back plus two max players so long as he is playing PF and not Center.

Bringing Lee back would allow the Knicks to sign a SG (Wade, LBJ, or Rudy Gay), Lebron and have the PF spot locked up. Gallo could be a sixth man until he learns to play on the road. Knicks can sign a veteran PG to hold down the position until we draft one in 2011.

I just don’t understand how that works financially. How can you sign two max FAs without renouncing Lee and if you do renounce Lee how do you bring him back after signing two max players?

  • DVJ

“Based on the last thread I’m probably in the minority here but I would love to see Lee come back plus two max players so long as he is playing PF and not Center.”

    Yep

Knicks would be the best team in the East and maybe the NBA only behind the Lakers.

    Douglas
    Lebron
    Gallo
    Lee
    Bosh

Then we Knick fans can sit back with our feet up and act like the last 10 years didn’t exist.

  • bbrody1

thats not what he said TD, he meant two max or dlee, listen to it again

  • http://www.youtube.com/tharealest62qb DaGawD_KnowLedge

whats the point of gettin danni boy Defensive players if the coach really doesn’t preach it…
when danni boy is gone the D will be better.

donnie talks a good wun tho.

if donnie strikes out this summer he will be gone along with danni boy this coming season..

  • pak14life

sorry tommy i think u misinterpreted it. I think he means that they could sign two max nowor they could also sign lee. There’s simply noway to get 2 max and give lee 10.

  • http://theKnicksBlog.com Tommy Dee

Roughly….”We can keep David Lee, We can sign two max…we can sign 3 or 4 players…”

it didn’t make sense that they can keep Lee AND 2. It appears he meant options…

checking with larry coon for confirmation.

  • Mucha

Trades Eddy Curry & Wilson Chandler for nothing to a team with enough capspace to absord both contracts?

Only way to do it I believe.

  • Koosh

Donnie spoke about being able to make trades since they are under the cap. What are some feasible deals they can make besides a S&T for Bosh?

  • Koosh

The other question I have is if the $56 million cap is a concrete limit on how much teams can spend? Can the Knicks go over the limit? I know they would subject themselves to the luxury tax, but if it means building a “contender” as fast as possible as Donnie said, what’s stopping them from going over $56 million? Why not Lebron, Bosh, and keep Lee?

  • gianthinker

I agree with him playing PF but if we got two max players to play with him it really wouldn’t matter where he played. That being said, unless Lee signs for $10MM or less there is no way we can afford him with two max guys and to be honest even at $10MM I dont think its possible. The two max contracts will pretty much use all of our money. I still think its smarter to sign one max guy but obviously if you can get two max guys you take them. That being said, no one knows how FA will go.

For instance, this talk about Bosh doing a sign and trade really hurts our chances for him. We basically have to hope we can sign two max guys and that they will give up the extra $30MM to not cause their new team to trade for them.

  • gianthinker

I didn’t hear the interview but you are right thats what he has to mean because to afford Lee with two max guys Lee would basically have to take a low mid level deal and thats not going to happen.

  • Knicks4life

In that lineup I would rather start Chandler than Gallo to make up for Lee’s defensive inadequacies and LBJ might have trouble staying with some of the smaller quicker two guards all game and Gallo sure can’t guard them. I see your point about spreading the floor with Gallo on offense but I think that unit would struggle on defense especially in an up-tempo game.

I really don’t like the idea of Douglas starting at PG either.

  • gianthinker

The Knicks need to hope these sign and trade rumors are all BS and players like Lebron and Bosh and others will give up the $30MM to join one another and not sap their new team (Knicks) knowing that winning will more than make up for that money with endorsements and such. This honestly comes down to if they really want to win or if they just want to get paid. Not just the Knicks, any team Bosh or any other max guy want to do a sign and trade to instantly becomes a less attractive landing spot if that team has to give up the talent to get that trade done. To me it makes no sense and they would be much better off just signing as FAs. Obviously its my hope as well as a Knicks fan but I honestly do believe thats the smarter way to go if they truly want to win.

  • bbrody1

you can only go voer the limit by signing your own players, signing rookie contracts, or signing vet. minimum contracts

once you’re over the cap you’re aso allowed to a mid-level exception which is something around a 6mil a year deal or a “bi-annual” exception which is alittle over two mila year i think.

theres also a luxury tax once you get above the cap a certain amount

  • Knicks4life

One of my biggest problems with D’Antoni was his refusal to play Wilcox or Darko. I really think he emphasizes offense to the expense of defense and you can’t win in the playoffs like that.

  • itzyung1

So Is everyone just completely forgetting the fact that Mike started Jared Jeffries?
I thought wilcox got a lot of PT when he was here though.

  • Knicks4life

For all you guys saying Stoudamire is “overrated” I hope you were watching tonight.

  • Knicks4life

“I thought wilcox got a lot of PT when he was here though”

    Um no.

“So Is everyone just completely forgetting the fact that Mike started Jared Jeffries?”

Who was an awful basketball player and who chucked up threes. My point was about interior defenders though. Guys who could protect the paint and weren’t necessarily shooters.

  • Mucha

    He played incredibly well.

Gasol played Avi Lee defense though

  • Koosh

Thanks for the explanation! Question though…Isn’t David Lee our player? Or do we have to renounce our rights to him first to be able to sign two other players?

  • Hydr0

with a lot of these line ups..I see people putting Lebron at shooting guard (obviously because of gallo), but I’m not sure that Lebron wants to come to a team to play shooting guard…His natural position is small forward. I assume the thought is that Lebron is shooting guard on defense and small forward on offense while gallo does the opposite, but I’m not sure he would want that situation. It could put us at a disadvantage

  • bbrody1

speaking of gasol… Marc Gasol is a fa next year we could let curry expire and sign him this yr he got 14.6points 8 reb’s 2 a’s and more than a blocka game….

  • Knicks4life

Marc Gasol would be great. But if Memphis lets Rudy Gay walk I doubt they let Gasol walk next year.

Marc Gasol next to Bosh or Lee would be a great front court though. I worry that D’Antoni would feel like he is not fast/agile enough to run the pick and roll. I really feel like his offense comes first, defense second.

  • Hydr0

I hope the suns can win the next game and really make this a good series…I’m happy they won…I really didn’t want to see 2 sweeps going into the finals….that would have been weak

  • bbrody1

we have to renounce his rights

  • bbrody1

if thabeet can actually play like a top ten pick next year they wont need gasol. sucks that right now theyre paying out the ass for thabeet and hes 7-3 270lbs of useless

  • Knicks4life

“if thabeet can actually play like a top ten pick next year they wont need gasol”

Yeah I wouldn’t count on that. Thabeet is a major project. At least a couple of years away. I still think he was the right move for them if they weren’t going PG though.

Hated the Zach Randolph trade though.

  • bob go knicks

I was talking to Lebron just last night, and he said”Shoes,I’ll play any position that they want me to play, just as long as Toney Douglass is my Point Guard” I swear we were on the phone together for hours, tryin to score some reefer

  • BiggieSmalls

the knicks can not sign Lee AND two max players.. they can barely afford Two max guys if they renounce Lee…

    Its simple math.

  • itzyung1

Jared Jeffries was a really good defender inside he blocked shots and took charges just wasn’t big enough to bang with the centers. and I don’t think Mike considered JJ a “shooter”….

Also Wilcox got a good amount of pt when he was here Im pretty sure of it.

  • BiggieSmalls

if youstart the off season under the cap you dont get a mid level exception

that is only available to those teams that START over the cap.. that’s why it is an exception./

i go away for a week and all regards for the salary cap go out the window.

  • bob go knicks

Eddy Curry ,Chandler, and douglas to Sixers for 2nd pick (Evan Turner) and Elton Brand

  • Mucha

They can if a team with enough capspace is willing to absorb Chandler and Curry’s contracts.

  • Mucha

    LOL

  • bob go knicks

steve nash is making amares life on the court easy tonite

  • Mucha

His caphold is $10.5 million I believe.

If the Knicks retain his rights the Knicks will not have enough capspace for 2 max contracts.

  • BiggieSmalls

JJ as in the line up for one reason..

To raise his trade value so that Donnie could move him.

  • Mucha

I couldn’t care less about the conference semi finals. I want to see a 7 game series between Boston and LA

  • BiggieSmalls

they can also if Curry opt out of his contract..

you cant assume these added variables..

  • Knicks4life

Jared Jeffries was not a good interior defender. He took charges that is about it.

  • Knicks4life

Why in the world would the Sixers do that?

I think you and LBJ mixed a little Sherman Helmsley in with that reefer.

  • TG

That was one game. One. He’s not a max player.

  • Hydr0

yeah,i hear ya…but I wouldn’t mind to see the Lakers get knocked down a notch or two before they get there

  • Hydr0

I actually don’t think the knicks should do that trade. Brand has an awful contract and doesn’t fit into a running offense and evan turner is not nba proven. I’m not sure that turner is worth taking on that albatross of a contract after finally ending the eddy curry saga.

  • StingerRay

Assuming Brand can’t do anything for SSOL, you’re essentially paying Turner $21 mil a year. Would you be better off just signing Joe Johnson to a max deal?
If Turner is the next Kobe, you do that deal, but what if he is only the next Jason Richardson?

I think you have to pass.

  • BigDaddybluesman

I think one issue people over look all too much. This year’s playoffs prove 2 things that are constants in the NBA. To win a championship you need to play defense and you need length as in skilled big men.

Yes Amare had a great night but Lopez did a lot to make it happen too. Boston has dominating because their big men have skills on both ends of the court. Maybe the Boston bigmen are not 7 footers but they are long and big baby is a wide body with Eddy Curry like agility except he actually can play.

Pau Gasol had a tough time with a slightly smaller quicker man, that’s what it is in the NBA. He needed some help and it wasn’t there.

LeBron is a smart guy, he knows he cannot win unless he has some skilled bigmen in front of him, Bosh is good but not the big body like an Eddy Curry. If LeBron comes to the Knicks a lot will have to do with Eddy Curry’s ability to play or at least be traded for some big bodies to protect LeBron.

I don’t care what D’assholi thinks the reality is you need a legit 7 foot center with some skills and at least 2 other players in the rotation that have some length and or bulk. People said over and over about DLee not protecting the paint, that’s not his game and he does not have the bulk for it. You need those players either in your starting line up or on the bench.

Even though he would have never started and was rail thin the only guy the Knicks had that would knock someone on their ass was Balkman. Even JJ was not afraid to give a hard foul and the tandem of DLee and JJ worked pretty well because of their offsetting skill set.

LeBron won’t worry about a PG, he’ll want some beef and length in front of him. The Knicks even with Bosh still won’t have enough unless they some how turn Barron and Curry into at least serviceable players. He also knows how important having someone who can knock down those 3 pointers and longer 2 point shots is and Gallo can do that. Maybe Chandler too if he takes his head out of the pot cloud. Their issue is consistency and we have not seen that yet. So leBron coming to the Knicks means he’s taking a huge chance with so many unproven players. He already could not bring together a veteran talented team enough to win a championship. Maybe he feels his will alone is not enough and he wants more of a sure thing like the Celtics had when they brought in the big 3.

  • blackwood

Thabeet is trash it was clear as day the whole time he was in school and more clear when blair almost snapped him in half!! they where fools picking him!!

  • Hydr0

Did you guys try calling wilson chandler? Word on the street is that he has the hook up lol

  • the oak

    D’Assholi…good one…

  • NoVaCaInE

    _ared _effries

    *fixed*

  • NoVaCaInE

You can not sign Lee and 2 max player. There is not enough CAP for Lee @ 10-12, LeBron @ 16+ and Bosh @ 16+. We have about 38M in Cap space available this summer.

  • NoVaCaInE

    +1

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I read some would rather have Lee over Amare. SMH!

  • HaS

    There’s a comma there.

  • Knicks4life

“If LeBron comes to the Knicks a lot will have to do with Eddy Curry’s ability to play or at least be traded for some big bodies to protect LeBron.”

Then my friend we are all in BIG trouble. . .

  • HaS

“he’ll want some beef and length in front of him.”

    Pause.

  • http://www.reeltalkblog.com Shakespeare

“- Walsh recognizes how important the Celtics’ defense was in stopping Lebron, and mentions the important play of Rasheed Wallace (me too.)”

I’m surprised NONE of you guys had anything to say about this…..I’m glad that Walsh made a mention, and hopefully takes a looooong look at him…

there’s noo way possible to sign bosh and lebron and have any money left for Lee….but we can bring in 2 vets….

i think we should look at wallace and jj redick, redick to me has been the best and most consistent magic player in this series, and the only guy that has been playing w/ any type of heart, and the only guy that’s been able to chase down ray allen around all those screens….i use to hate this guy as a i every duke, but can’t deny the kid plays w/ heart, and his game has grown…

  • http://www.reeltalkblog.com Shakespeare

w/ that said, i think the knicks should buy a late first rounder and draft bledsoe, draft stephensen and jerome jordan in the second round…

then sign lebron , and sign and trade lee for bosh, and sign wallace and jj redick…

which gives us a lineup of:
    Toney Douglas
    Lebron James
    Gallo
    Bosh
    Barron

    bench:
Wallace(shot blocking presence knicks have been lacking)
    Chandler
Redick(another shooter, and a good matchup for ray allen)
    Bledsoe
    Curry
    Stephensen
    Jordan
    S-Rod

  • BobbyFromBK

Bringing in defensive minded players and having a coach stress and continually work on defense is two different things. With D’antoni, defense is an afterthought.

Walsh should bring in a “Thibideax” type assistant coach, whether MD likes it or not. Walsh would then prove that he is the one calling the shots. Right now it seems that he’s afraid of MD.

  • BigDaddybluesman

Wallace is done. This is his swan song. I figure you have not watched him play all year, he’s running on vapors and there is nothing left in the tank.

  • BigDaddybluesman

Dream on, Dream on, dream on, dream on…….YEAH!!!!!!!!

    Guitar solo

    Dream on, dream on…..

I think you get the idea from an Aerosmith song.

  • http://www.reeltalkblog.com Shakespeare

ummmmmm i guess your the one that hasn’t been watching the playoffs….Wallace jus like Shaq, play for the playoffs….they might not give their all during the season, but when the playoffs start, Wallace doesn’t miss a beat…

I guess you’ve missed the Defense he has been playing on Dwight, the bigg 3′s he’s hit…..gotten in the post and abused rashard lewis…he has a good 2yrs left, and would be a great vet to push our bigs as well as lebron…..

PLEASE WATCH THE GAME TONIGHT, AND THEN YOU WILL SEE WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT…..

  • http://www.reeltalkblog.com Shakespeare

Turns out, Wallace was just waiting for the playoffs. Boston coach Doc Rivers noted that Wallace had a consistent mantra throughout the regular season.

“Everyone else was reminding me of what he wasn’t doing,” Rivers said. “One thing I’ll say about Rasheed, and he said it throughout, ‘Doesn’t matter what I do during the regular season I will be judged for what I do in the playoffs.’

“I didn’t want him to take that literally thoughout the season,” Rivers added, chuckling.

As he had throughout the playoffs, Wallace made a positive impact for Boston in Game 1. His numbers weren’t especially impressive, Wallace scored 13 points, blocked one shot, grabbed two rebounds and committed four personal fouls.

But his success in rattling Dwight Howard was.

“You gotta be physical,” Wallace said. “He plays physical. That was the thing we looked at in film the last two series. guys just let him do whatever he wanted to do down there. But, no, we definitely gonna fight him.”

Asked if he enjoys the playoffs, Wallace answered quickly, “Hell yeah I enjoy it. … This is our time.”

  • Big Blue St3

Thabeet would really have to show them something as they have all kinds of cap space next year.

But there are a lot of good big men next year that are either UFA’s or restricted : Perkins, Dalembert, Hawes, Gasol Horford

  • bob go knicks

He shoulda brought in thibodeaux as his HEAD coach when all was getting done.We would have had 2 full years of a defensive aura surrounding the team already, not the KAOS that is always around this club

  • bob go knicks

If you bring in 2 max players, what is LEE gonna do while the 2 maxies are playing hoop?He cant play defense!with 2 maxies on the team,he wont be able to shoot. So whats he gonna do?

  • bob go knicks

you aint no bluesman,if yer listenin to those guys!LOL

  • bob go knicks

you guys wont say that when Turner is the next Michael Jordan, who by the way was picked 3rd
